Name: Savage Dragon #115 Publisher: Image Price: $7.95 Creator: Erik Larsen Comments: Wow! Savage Dragon #115 really kicked ass! What a big, big book! It was worth every bit of $7.95! I enjoyed each and every story, but I enjoyed the main story the most! I want to see Mister Glum get his own comic book! He would be the perfect spin- off. What a character this little red guy is! He has delusions of grandeur and acts like a little kid when called upon something. Then that wrist device to make him intangible was hilarious, especially when he places his hand and arm into the skull of the Savage Dragon! What a little nuisance this character is! Then like in most Savage Dragon stories, there is action galore, with torsos being ripped apart, head exploding and whatnot. The scenes were more horrific than when the 54 Japanese school girls jumped upon the train tracks of the Tokyo bound train in the movie "The Suicide Club". I love the persona and the characterization of Skullface, he deserves to command the Vicious Circle, because no one can be more vicious than Skullface! I laughed my butt off as Savage Dragon confronts little Mister Glum and asked him if he was trying to kill him and like a little kid with his hand caught in the cookie jar, he merely says..."me?" Savage Dragon can rip a battleship in half and is not an easy kill, but yet Mister Glum thinks he can bring back the bloodied remains of the Savage Dragon. For a little guy from another dimension that supposedly conquered a world, the little guy has spunk! Enjoyed every bit of this fantastic comic book and the artwork knocked my socks off! Thank you! MUSICOMICS #6 - July 2004 "Maybe, Maybe Not (Last Class Reunion) by Matt Levin 12 pages, black on colored paper, mini-comic "One of a series of mainly rubber-stamped mini-comics." Published by Walking Man Comics. 123 Elm Street Hatfield, MA 01038 walkingmancomics@msn.com Any 4/$3.00 or $1 each - Sampler free for 37-cent stamp This issue is more interesting for the pictures than the song lyric. Some of the composition is the usually rubber-stamped people and rocks and trees. The rest are photo shots from the inside of Classical High School in Springfield, MA. They were taken during the last class reunion of the entire student body prior to the building being turned into condos. In the theme of reunion the song eludes to times gone by and things remembered, maybe, maybe not. A nice sentiment and good composition DR. BLINK: SUPERHERO SHRINK #0 by John Kovalic and Christopher Jones 32 pages, black & white, color cover, $2.99 Dork Storm Press www.dorkstorm.com john@kovalic.com The latest gem from the fertile mind of John Kovalic is set in a world much like any other that has super heroes in it. (as an aside, we all know DC and Marvel hold a copyright on the word SUPERHERO so I wonder how he got away with it in the title!) These heroes look very familiar, especially the big three - Captain Omnipotent, Nocturne, and Athena. This issue acts to introduce some of these characters and the premise of an analyst who has them as clients. Often his advise leads to unforeseen circumstances. A liberated hero might get so caught up in feeling good he ignores people in peril. A villain who finally learns not to make the mistakes that leads to his capture (giving clues ahead of time?) might brag on TV how his analyst helped him be more successful. You get the idea. This issue also lays out for the first time the origin of Dr. Frederick Wertham Blink who watches the Watchmen, at reasonable hourly rates. Sometimes the rates are higher, if the patient reads his mind and gives his advise before he can, heh! The origin story is enjoyable as we see Dr. Blink in a failing practice and a failed marriage, raising a teenaged daughter. An act of fate has two heroes crash into his office as the meet for the first time, as heroes are required to do in the comics. From that episode he loses a secretary but gets an idea for a book. "Chicken Soup for the Super Soul" is a hit and he becomes in demand as they line up to get an appointment. Really, I laugh my self silly reading this comic. It is fresh and familiar. It touches on the real lives of people and sets up situations that could only happen in the comics. Escape from your own troubles and take a seat on the couch. You'll feel better for it. The doctor is in. QUANTUM: ROCK OF AGES #4 32 pages, black & white, color cover, $2.99/$4.25CAN Dreamchilde Press www.quantumcomic.net Philip Clark - writer James Rodriguez - artist Supriya Kalay - inks Jennifer Kwon - grayscales Jackie Teixeira - cover colorist Lettering - Philip Clark The good news is the story rocks on and keeps building momentum. The bad news is not enough of you are reading this exceptional comic. So #5 will be delayed until September and unfortunately will not be listed by Diamond. But your dealer can still get it from FM Distribution and Cold Cut. Retailers can order 5 or more copies and get a better discount than they get from Diamond. Be sure to tell your store to get you a copy and four more for the rack. If they haven't seen it yet they will be glad when they actually see the great art and passion in the storytelling in both words and pictures. Our heroes are hopping between dimensions trying to find all the pieces of the Quantum Silica that have been embedded into people of different worlds - giving them unique powers. The world it started from is run by Nazis who won the war and the scientist leading the group is trying to save all of reality by retrieving the pieces. This makes us wonder why the bad guys are trying to stop them. The characters are unique and interesting. Some don't mix well but they all band together when threatened to make their goal. Skyler Hope, their latest addition, has the means to help them travel among worlds easier but may also end up killing Nick if he doesn't stop aggravating her. A timely escape only delays the inevitable battle and when things seem lost a new hero appears. Like I said the art is spectacular. the layouts are dynamic, always from the right angles and perspectives. It also doesn't hurt to have a good looking babe in the group. Even the bad guys are visually distinct, with some creatures among them to give a feeling that the powers will use any means to get what they want, Skyler. Latch on to this copy and order the next to keep it coming. _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- [13] New Comic Book Releases List [NCRL] by Charles LePage chuck@comiclist.com http://www.comiclist.com New Comic Book Releases List for Wednesday, 08/04/2004, compiled by Charles LePage with information from Suncoast Comics. BIRTHDAY TPB The fourth volume in The Ring series MEIMU (W/A) On sale November 17, SC, 160pg, b&w, 5" x 7", $12.95 In 2002, The Ring came to American silver screens and brought a whole new style of horror and suspense to the States. Based on a series of novels by Suzuki Koji, The Ring became a media franchise in Japan with its fascinatingly creepy, yet scientific and otherworldly subject matter. Not to mention its very scary "monster," the spirit of a girl whose body was dropped in a well many years past. As you'll find reading through Dark Horse's series of Ring manga, this story is rich with an undergrowth of science and hatred, of strong will behind the murderous ghost of Sadako. "Birthday," the fourth in a series of five Ring manga, is a trilogy of stories, each enriching the main storyline of the Ring series. "The Casket Floating in the Sky" centers on Mai Takano, and how she becomes wrapped deeper into Sadako's grasp. "Lemon Heart" tells of one of Sadako's early loves, and eerily wraps itself back into the plotline of Mai Takano. And finally the "Sadako" story goes into the depths of both Sadako's death and her rebirth. Slowly, the details of how The Ring truly works are trickling out into the daylight. All Dark Horse volumes of The Ring are published in the original Japanese format! Dark Horse sold through 20,000 copies of The Ring Volume 1 in less than one month! BLADE OF THE IMMORTAL #94: LAST BLOOD PART 5 (of 5) HIROAKI SAMURA (W/A) On sale October 13, b&w, 32pg, $2.99 Hiroaki Samura's Last Blood story line comes to its conclusion! With revenge-lust hanging thick in the air, our main event is the deadly showdown between the starving and weakened Anotsu and his crazed, quick Shingy"t"-ry?? opponent, Iriya. Makie has evened out the playing field in a bloody flurry that puts Kill Bill Vol. 1 to shame, while Manji and Magatsu try to survive separate dogfights with Shingy"t"-ry?? swordsmen on the sidelines. Manji battles in order to be reunited with his beloved Rin, Magatsu engages his opponent in order to defend Anotsu, and any survivors of these gory encounters will face each other and their own shifting, uneasy alliances! This issue's dramatic cover mirrors the intensity inside, as Samura continues to reinvent the bushid" grudge match with a sharp, modern edge. FOR MATURE READERS CASPER On sale September 22 Casper Statue, fully-painted, $34.99 Casper Figurine, fully-painted, $24.99 Casper Keyring, $4.99 After the great response we've gotten for out Hot Stuff products, we are pleased to offer another beloved Harvey comic character, Casper. THE CHRONICLES OF CONAN VOLUME 6: THE CURSE OF THE GOLDEN SKULL AND OTHER STORIES TPB ROY THOMAS (W), JOHN BUSCEMA (A), and NEAL ADAMS (A) On sale November 24, SC, 160pg, FC, 7" x 10", $15.95 In the eight decades that have passed since prolific pulp writer Robert E. Howard created his seminal Sword and Sorcery adventurer, Conan, many other scribes have tried to recreate the passion and energy Howard infused into his stories. Few have come as close as comics writer Roy Thomas did during his long and influential run on Marvel's monthly Conan the Barbarian series back in the 1970s. Collaborating with the most acclaimed and talented artists of the time, Thomas wove a narrative tapestry of action, intrigue, and heroism that's as powerful today as it was when it was published nearly 30 years ago. The first volume of The Chronicles of Conan has sold over 10,000 copies in the first two months of release! Featuring completely remastered color and text corrections, these stories have been unavailable in color since their original publication. CONAN #9 KURT BUSIEK (W), CARY NORD (A), THOMAS YEATES (A), DAVID STEWART (C) LEINIL FRANCIS YU (Cover) On sale October 20, FC, 32pg, $2.99 The second story arc in the monthly Conan begins here, with new cover artist Leinil Francis Yu! In the first arc, Conan discovered the horrible secrets of Hyperborea, a land he imagined to be wondrous and beautiful. Now he ventures into an even more treacherous setting-civilization. The world of bar fights and women opens up to the barbarian, and he realizes that it's possible to thrive even in a world that disgusts you. However, powerful forces take note of Conan, and one of the greatest evils in the ancient world is about to enter his life. "[Conan] is one of the best written and most beautifully illustrated works currently being produced; that is based on a character with strong literary tradition and previous comic success doesn't hurt either. To this point, the creators have stuck closely to the classic stories of Robert E. Howard. The care for the original material is apparent, and major reason why this series is a must read." -411mania.com Thanks for subscribing to the Comic Book Network Electronic Magazine (CBEM) --------------------------->Disclaimer<--------------------------- This is an ANNOUNCE only mailing list, only the Editor can send messages to the list.
