FANTASTIC FOUR MOVIE UPDATE Julian McMahon, star of FX's Nip/Tuck, has been offered the role of Doctor Doom, according to the Hollywood Reporter and Variety. The role would be the first feature film for the 36-year-old Australian. McMahon's television credits also include The WB's Charmed and NBC's Profiler. McMahon would join a cast that includes Michael Chiklis as Benjamin Grimm/the Thing, Ioan Gruffudd as Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, Jessica Alba as Susan Storm/the Invisible Girl and Chris Evans as Johnny Storm/the Human Torch. Production on Fantastic Four is expected to begin within two weeks for a July 1, 2005 theatrical release WILDSTORM'S THE INTIMATES The Intimates, a new monthly series created by Jim Lee and Joe Casey, will premiere in November from WildStorm Productions. Here's how WildStorm describes the book, which is written by Casey with art by Giuseppe Camuncoli and spot art and covers by Lee." "Welcome to the Seminary, a top-secret school where teenagers learn how to be super-heroes. That's the setting of The Intimates, a new monthly series beginning in November. The Intimates follows the misadventures of Destra, the Duke, Empty Vee, Punchy and Sykes as they take courses like Secret Identity 101, NuPhysics and Advanced Morality. But the Seminary is hiding a dark secret even the retired super-hero faculty doesn't seem to know!" The Intimates received a big promotional push at Comic-Con International. "I decided to give Wildstorm another shot," joked Casey, who has had three previous WildStorm titles canceled. "DC told me 'It's time for you to sell out big time' and I said 'OK, how about some teen superheroes? That sounds hot'" Casey explained Lee's role in the interior art. "There's a comic within the comic that all the kids read, and Jim's the artist on that book," Casey said. JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED UPDATE Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons will receive credits in the upcoming Justice League Unlimited episode, "For the Man Who Has Everything." Moore and Gibbons created the comics story from which the episode is based. The story first appeared in Superman Annual #11 in 1985 and has been reprinted subsequently. Producer Bruce Timm recently explained how the episode developed. "That actually came about when we were sitting down plotting the season, it came up in the conversation that in the first two seasons we never did a show that involved just the big three," Timm said. "And we were like, 'Yeah, I guess we should rectify that situation.' "And it was Dwayne (McDuffie, story editor/producer) who said that the best big three story of all time was 'For the Man Who Has Everything.' And we said, 'OK, let's do that.'" Timm said he talked to Moore about doing the episode. "I wasn't going to do the show if he wasn't comfortable with us doing it," Timm said. "And he said, 'Oh yes, I would be honored if you would adapt that for your show.' "So that was great. And hopefully, he'll still feel that way once the show's done. I think he'll like it." The episode features Mongul, who also appeared in the two-part "War World" episode of Justice League. In "For the Man Who Has Everything," Batman and Wonder Woman surprise Superman at the Fortress of Solitude, in order to bring the Man of Steel his birthday present. But when they arrive, he has been immobilized by a special "gift" that Mongul has delivered to him. "It's a really intense episode," Timm said. "Mongul is definitely more scary than in the episode 'War World.'" Mongul is again voiced by Eric Roberts, whom Timm said brought to life through an offbeat performance in "War World." "Honestly, Eric Roberts kind of made us nervous a little bit because he had so many different ideas on how to play this character and we recorded every single one of them,i Timm said on a recent Justice League: Paradise Lost DVD. He's not consistent through the episode -- he doesn't sound like the same guy from the beginning to the end. There are times when he's real suave, and there are other times where he's really brutish, and we thought, 'Man, we don't know if this is going to cut together -- if this is going to make a consistent character -- or what.' "Fortunately, the storyboard artists really focused in on the acting that he had provided in the vocal tracks and played up all these different facets of his personality in the show. So, when we got the show back, we thought, 'Wow, this is great, this is better than if he was just the mean bad guy.' I mean, he's vain, he's arrogant, he's petty. I think that makes him an interesting character and, fortunately, that's exactly what Eric brought out in his performance." "For the Man Who Has Everything" is scheduled to air on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. (ET). +++++ From Newsarama at http://www.Newsarama.com/ BAND ON THE RUN MOVIE TIE-IN COMIC COMING Feature film and cross-media franchise production studio Starlight Runner Entertainment has agreed to launch a publishing imprint with comic books based on the raucous teen comedy "Band on the Run." The theatrical feature is currently casting and will be produced by Romano-Shane Productions and Handpicked Films. Anthony Romano and Michel Shane are best known as Executive Producers of Steven Spielberg's worldwide hit, "Catch Me If You Can" and Executive Producers of the blockbuster science fiction "I, Robot" starring Will Smith. "Band on the Run" marks Starlight Runner's second foray into comic book publishing. In 2003, the company published a 36 issue series based on the world's most popular line of racecar toys. This time, Starlight Runner will remain in publishing, with "Band on the Run" kicking off a series of comic book mini-series, graphic novels and prose novels under a single imprint. The imprint is yet to be named. A rollicking snow boarder heist adventure, "Band on the Run" brings together the worlds of extreme sports and arena rock to dazzling and hilarious effect. Starlight Runner's initial series based on the property will be a prequel, used to introduce the characters to prospective fans. Handpicked Films is currently negotiating with a U.S. soft drink giant to include the comics in some of its packaging. Starlight Runner is also developing other media tie-ins for the production. "Our work with 'Band on the Run' has triggered two major developments for our company," said Starlight Runner CEO Jeff Gomez. "The first is the fact that we are returning to publishing in a big, fun way, and there are many more projects to come. The second is that these comics mark the beginning of a wonderful and lucrative business relationship between Starlight Runner, Romano- Shane Productions and Handpicked Films." "Band on the Run" is expected to start production in January 2005, with the first comic book series to be released shortly thereafter. A second series is expected in tandem with the film's theatrical release. COURTNEY LOVE'S PRINCESS AI #1 GN IN US Princess Ai, TOKYOPOP's new manga co-created by international rock star Courtney Love, hot new creator D.J. Milky and Japanese manga-ka Misaho Kujiradou, is the number one graphic novel in the country. According to Nielsen BookScan sales reports, Princess Ai topped the Adult Fiction Overall Trade Paper Graphic Novels list for the week ending July 25. The news comes on the heels of San Diego Comic-Con, the largest comic convention in North America, where TOKYOPOP featured its publishing program and future releases. The award-winning publishing company has four manga titles in the most recent BookScan top 10, including Fruits Basket, Kill Me, Kiss Me and D*N*Angel, with Princess Ai standing firm at the top. "Princess Ai's high ranking on Bookscan certainly exemplifies the growing acceptance of manga by a broader consumer audience," said John Parker, TOKYOPOP's President and COO. "We knew we had developed a strong story complemented by brilliant artwork, and seeing it at number one is extremely satisfying. This truly is the summer of Love." Inspired by Courtney Love and featuring the character design of famed artist Ai Yazawa (Paradise Kiss), the beautiful manga artwork of Misaho Kujiradou and the riveting story of D.J. Milky, Princess Ai chronicles the amazing journey of a mysterious young woman searching for identity and salvation in this world and beyond. After finding herself lost on the cold, hard streets of Tokyo, Ai must piece together clues about who she is, why she's on Earth and the secret of the heart-shaped box she carries. What the princess experiences along the way is an adventure filled with love, chaos and unexpected fame. Princess Ai volume one, "Destitution," was just released this month. Volume two, "Lumination," will be available at bookstores everywhere in February 2005. Animation projects, merchandise and other evolutions of Princess Ai are in the works for the near future. PUNISHER DVD SHIPS WITH EXCLUSIVE ENNIS/DILLON PUNISHER COMIC It wasn't too long ago that movies based on comic books downplayed or did as much as they could to distance themselves from their source material (and okay, to be honest, with some movies, - League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, we're looking at you - comics as a whole breathed a sigh of relief when the movie didn't mention it came from a comic). However, with both closer coordination between comics and some recent comic book films, as well as avowed comic book fans writing or sitting in the director's chair, the ties are getting a little closer, and more and more films are embracing their source material. A case in point comes in early September. Newsarama has learned that for a limited time after its September 7th release date, The Punisher DVD will ship with an exclusive prequel Punisher comic written by Garth Ennis, penciled by Steve Dillon, and inked by Jimmy Palmiotti. The comic will set the stage for the film version of the character, showing what happened to Frank Castle before the action of the film picks up. Roughly 100,000 copies of the comic will be inserted into DVD cases. According to sources who spoke with Newsarama, 10,000 of the DVDs shipped will include limited edition versions of the comic which will feature a variant signature cover, signed by all three creators, as well as cover artist Tim Bradstreet. The cover shown is the common cover by Bradstreet, featuring the Thomas Jane version of Frank Castle, aka, the Punisher. The limited edition signature variant comic will be distributed randomly among the DVDs shipped to retail outlets. +++++ From ComiX-Fan at http://www.comixfan.com/xfan SINGER X-ITS X-MEN FILM FRANCHISE According to a recent report by the Hollywood Reporter trade paper, 20th Century Fox has terminated its two-year deal with director Bryan Singer, helmer of its two hit X-Men movies, following his signing on to revive the Superman film franchise for Warner Bros. Fox's deal with Singer and his Bad Hat Harry production company was reportedly in the middle of its first year. The studio had held discussions with Singer to direct X-Men 3, due in 2006, but it had yet to close the deal which wasn't part of his overall Fox pact. The trade went on to report that Singer, who has begun working out of Superman's production offices at Warners, has yet to sign an overall deal with the Burbank-based studio, though he is developing a Logan's Run remake there. +++++ From the DC Comics Online Newsletter at http://www.dccomics.com DC COMICS INVADES THE WINDY CITY FOR WIZARD WORLD CHICAGO! I understand if I want the truth, I will go to Silver Bulletins."I enter freely with my mind open and my blinkers off." Now, on to the rumours . . . [NOTE: this column may be slightly edited for language. - D.L.] High Noon By Blair Marnell One week removed from the San Diego con, and I'm still going through a backlog of e-mails. My SBC account had almost 200 e- mails when I got back. Granted a lot of that was spam, but there were also some good leads in there that I haven't had a chance to follow up on yet. So, thanks to everyone who sent in tips while I was gone. I really appreciate it. We've got a lot to go over this week, so let's just jump right into the news and rumors. Superboy Lost? Last Saturday, Tony Isabella posted a message to his board regarding "the biggest news in comics." Isabella initially kept the details to himself, saying only that he wanted to see who broke the story first. However, speculation quickly began to swirl that the news involved possible heirs to Joe Shuster's Superman rights. Finally, Isabella posted the following message last Wednesday: Man, this is embarrassing. As I posted earlier today, my information on the Siegel and Shuster estates reclaiming their rights to Superboy came from three unrelated sources, all of whom I felt were good sources. However, I didn't have the documentation on this ruling in front of me. If I did, I might well have broken the story myself. I have been quietly seeking out people who could steer me to that documentation. The only place I stated the information I had was on what was supposed to be a private list for comics writers, a list founded by Steven Grant and founded under the basis Fight Club rules. Nothing from the list was ever to be repeated elsewhere, at least not without the permission of the person being quoted. Indeed, even the existence of the list was supposed to be secret...but, as I see it, Grant's giving me as a source for his column frees me from that obligation. It was *never* my intention to release the news without documentation. My hope was that the comics news media would investigate and report on the story. I wanted to needle them into covering it. Nothing more. Now that the story is out there, I must decide if I want to give any interviews on it. My first inclination is that I do not. This isn't my story, except in that anything that challenges the mistreatment of comics creators by DC and other companies - past and present - could eventually help me. Right now, I'm going to look at requests on a case by case basis. My own time is limited. One thing I will absolutely not do is reveal any source of mine. If the sources wish to speak, they can come forward on their own. I won't have anything else to say on this today. Since then, Isabella has remained silent on the issue and a corroborating source has yet to publicly come forward. This Has A "Red Kyrptonite" Factor of Five Out of Ten The Chosen One How do you make a sequel to the Second Coming? Ask Mark Millar. I've heard that he and Peter Gross are planning a second Chosen miniseries down the line, possibly to be released with the next round of Millarworld titles. In the interim, Gross may also be working on a creator owned series with Mike Carey. This Has A "Walking on Water" Factor of Seven Out of Ten continued . . .
