CONCEPT
Ring of Roses is set in London in the 21st century, but it's a
London we wouldn't recognise. This is an incredible city.
The Church rules England with an iron rod, but has begun to lose
its grip on power. Times are tense. Then six high-powered priests
are brutally murdered on the Thames. Samuel Waterhouse, a
flamboyant barrister is hired to investigate, but soon realises
he is out of his depth. So he hires a hardened criminal, William
Barnett, to assist him.
Then things really start to happen. Barnett rams through the
delicate web of conspiracy and counter-conspiracy like an express
train through a scout troop's tent.
Meanwhile Bubonic plague breaks out. Thousands are dying.
Throughout all this chaos, Waterhouse and Barnett start treading
on the toes of the immensely powerful figures behind the scenes.

TOP COW

INTRO
Take the case of a friend of mine who's doing twenty-five to life
in Federal Prison for allegedly contract killing some dude. I say
he was railroaded. So what if he was seen in the area? So what if
twelve hundred unaccounted for dollars mysteriously appeared in
his bank account? There was no murder weapon. There was no bloody
shirt. The jury just got all weepy on account of the dead guy
being a father of four. They woulda convicted a ham sandwich.
And what if he did do it? Does that make him a bad guy? He's
gotta eat just like you. He's got bills just like you. Look at
Jackie Estacado. Yeah, he's a killer and a gangster, but he
suffers, too. The Darkness denies him almost every pleasure in
his life. He could release that power upon the world-Let the
Darkness free and wash himself in sex and power and more sex. But
despite his suffering he contains it. And why? Because he's a
good guy, that's why. Maybe he's a hero just because he hasn't
let hoards of demons free to ravage the earth. Maybe we ought to
thank him for that!
So, with thoughts of my wrongfully convicted friend in my head
and his framed mug shot staring at me from the edge of my desk, I
wrote this tale-four issues of The Darkness, starting with this
month's #17. To show the other side of life, maybe change some
preconceived prejudices...and prove that hit-men are people too.
