                                               ComicBkNet@aol.com

Well, thank God that's all over. The recent election cycle and
the fervor of the devoted on both sides reminded, strangely
enough, about comic books. Specifically, I began to think of the
concept most comic fans are familiar with - "willing suspension
of disbelief."

In order to fully enjoy the fantasy world of most comic books you
have to accept certain things you are not true - specifically,
things that are not physically possible in the non-comic world.
For example, you have to accept that a man can fly, lift many
times his own weight, and shoot heat beams from his eyes for
Superman to make any sense.  You know that can't ever happen or
at least has never been documented but if you accept it COULD
happen, along with other things, then the rest of the stories,
and characters make sense. You are willing to believe, for the
sake of the story, or in other words willingly suspend your
disbelief.

Follow me so far?  Good!

What has this got to do with politics?  Many have observed that
this particular time around the anger and partisan attacks, the
demonizing of opponents and even outright lies from both sides
was at an all time high.  Now if you are way too involved in any
of this you think - my guy is totally right and the other guy is
wrong, a liar, evil, insert appropriate adjective. But what you
don't realize sometimes is that a natural bias prevents you from
seeing the faults of your guy. You may get so wrapped up in one or
two issues that mean everything to you - the war on terror,
abortion, gay marriage, social security, etc. - that no matter
what else the guy stands for, if he claims to espouse what you
like on your hot button then nothing else matters.  You are
willing to overlook faults, even to deny to yourself they exist.
All that matters is your issue. You ignore the evidence that
something, or a lot, might be wrong with your guy. What makes it
easier is the constant barrage, from those empowered to get him or
her elected at any cost, of the spin that deflects any and all
criticism. It becomes difficult to tell if you are being
manipulated by either side. It is hard to be objective about the
big picture. You come to believe anything from one side and
nothing from the other side. You are suspending disbelief about
the things you want to believe are true but are not. You are
rationalizing the things you hear from the other side as all spin
but your side is all true.

Now bear in mind, I started this by saying this is about the "way
too involved." By definition, at least to my mind, they are prone
to this way of thinking.  The majority, or at least the rational
minded who seek the real truth, will sift through the spin, seek
out unbiased facts, get educated on the aspects of the issues,
read up on the records of the candidates, in other words make an
informed opinion. They weigh the good and the bad on both sides
and decide which way the scales tip. You often hear of people who
choose the lesser of two evils. It is not a pretty thought, but it
indicates perhaps a thoughtful process.

Now if you did that with comics, there would be a whole bunch
that you would decide not to read because they could not possibly
happen in the real world and so they are not worth reading. You
make decisions for the enjoyment of the medium. You make voting
decisions based on criteria that sometimes for the wrong reasons
or overlook the facts because your mind is already made up.  Such
is life in the real world.

Now go out there and buy some of these comics and enjoy them for
what they are:

One last thing about the election. Are you suffering from PESS -
Post Election Stress Syndrome?  It seems to me a lot of people in
the online comic community who care to express how they were
leaning politically during the campaigning are now saying they
are unhappy, depressed, etc. Some high profile celebs are once
again talking about leaving the country. The Canadian Immigration
web site had a six-fold increase in hits the day after the
election. This is insanity. Consider leaving the country because
your candidate lost an election? What little faith you must have
in democracy in the first place. You don't change things by
running away. If you believe in your cause you continue to work
for change. Well, few will really go through with it unless
things get desperate anyway. Meanwhile, life goes on. Face life
with a smile!

Speaking of winners and losers - I mentioned last time I would be
spending time in New York City this week. It was all business, no
free time.  What I did observe is that how friendly everyone was
to me. Imagine that!  After all those things I heard about those
dam Yankees I find the fans are just like normal folks. The few
who commented on baseball did so when I said I was from
Massachusetts. Every one of them offered a hand and said
congratulations on the Red Sox win.  Now, we can all learn a
lesson from that.

Hi David,

I've got a request from you and/or the loyal readers of the e-
mag.

My wife is student teaching and as part of her "final project", as
it were, she's decided to put together a unit on using comic books
to teach/help 3rd graders how to read.  As part of this, she
wanted to give each kid a comic book to take home.  So what I need
is someone who has about 25 copies of some kid-friendly (3rd
grade) comics to donate them to her.  We can't offer much in
return (student teaching pays about $0!), other than our thanks
and maybe a signed (by me!), copy of Digital Webbing Presents #18
(or not signed, if you'd prefer) and shipping reimbursement. She
needs them before November 11th.

If you can help, send them to:

Mike and Kim Imboden

Thanks to everyone in advance and keep on reading CBEM!   :)

[No sooner had I received this that I shot off a message to Ken
Carson at That's Entertainment, the Eisner winning comic and
collectibles store I work at on Saturdays. I am happy to report
that a package is on the way to Mike and Kim that will more than
cover the needs for her project. Once again a great big thanks to
Ken and TE for stepping up and helping out. All you teachers out
there please consider using comics constructively in the
classroom. As they say reading is FUN-damental! - D.L.]

BALTIMORE COMIC-CON ANNOUNCES 2005 DATES
Fan-Favorite Convention to Be Held on September 17 & 18, 2005

BALTIMORE, MD -- Organizer Marc Nathan has announced that the
sixth annual Baltimore Comic-Con will be held on September 17 &
18, 2005, at the Baltimore Convention Center in Baltimore, MD.

"Since its debut in 2000, the Baltimore Comic-Con has continued to
see a considerable increase in fan turnout each and every year,"
said Nathan. "In fact, we saw our attendance for 2004 double in
size from the previous year, thanks in part to the many retailers,
creators, and companies who continued to show their support for
the show. Needless to say, my wonderful wife, Bonnie, and I hope
to draw even more fans in 2005, and are looking forward to once
again celebrating the comic book medium next fall."

In regards to the 2004 edition of the show, the Baltimore Comic-
Con successfully played host to countless retailers and special
industry guests during the weekend of September 11. It was also
attended by a number of industry vendors and organizations,
including: About Comics, A.C.T.O.R., AdHouse Books, Arcana Studio,
CCC Promotions, Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, Crusade
Entertainment, Dark Horse Comics, Decipher, Del Rey/Random House,
Devil's Due Publishing, Diamond Comic Distributors, Diamond Select
Toys and Collectibles, DreamWorks, Dynamic Forces, E. Gerber
Products, Gaijin Studios, Gemstone Publishing, Graymatter Images,
Inkworks, Insight Studios, Krause Publications, IDW Publishing,
LaserMach, Mecca Comics Group, Palisades Toys, Rorschach Studios,
Skydog Press, and Waldenbooks, among others.

"At the same time, this year's Baltimore Comic-Con also provided
us with another chance to show off the appeal of Charm City,"
Nathan continued. "In my mind, there is nothing more beautiful
than Baltimore's Inner Harbor in September; the area at this time
of year makes a wonderful backdrop for our show. If you look at
all the various comics conventions held throughout the year, few
are lucky enough to be based in such a lovely city. Sure, San
Diego in July comes close, but there's just nothing like Baltimore
in late summer -- a fact attendees will discover for themselves
when they come to next year's show."

Look for more news about the 2005 Baltimore Comic-Con in the
coming months. An electronic version of the Baltimore Comic-Con
logo is available upon request.

ABOUT THE BALTIMORE COMIC-CON
First launched in 2000 by Reisterstown, MD, businessman Marc
Nathan, the BALTIMORE COMIC-CON was created to honor and celebrate
the comic book medium, as well as the many individuals who have
advanced it for more than a century. The Baltimore Comic-Con has
since become one of the fastest-growing comic book conventions in
the nation, and one of the few that proudly maintains its focus on
comics and related collectibles. For more information, please

INDY MAGAZINE ON COMICS AND POLITICS

Indy Magazine, the online quarterly about the comics medium,
returns in time for the U.S. Presidential election to examine the
intersection of comics and politics.

Features include "Ephemera vs. the Apocalypse" by Art Spiegelman,
adapted from a talk at Cooper Union and illustrated with sketches
from "In the Shadow of No Towers."  Says Spiegelman: "Everything I
know I learned from comic books, and I wasn't surprised that
aliens had taken over our government."

Political cartoonist Tim Kreider interviews Jules Feiffer about
the value of political art and the state of the union.  Feiffer,
who satirized Presidents from Eisenhower to Clinton, calls the
current political situation "worse than I've ever seen in my
life...  We're dealing with Evangelical Republicanism, which is
wildly sure of itself and so sure of itself that it has no second
thoughts."

A special op/ed comics section reprints four pages of election
season comics by Joe Sacco and two pages by Art Spiegelman, along
with a selection of provocative post-9/11 panel cartoons drawn by
Willem for France's Liberation newspaper and Charlie magazine.

Other features include Marc Singer's analysis of comics drawn by
Petter Bagge ("Hate") for Reason, a libertarian magazine; Bill
Kartalopoulos's essay on the depiction of groups and types in
comics by Spiegelman, Sacco, Marjane Satrapi and others; Jeremey
Dennis's photo-journal from the GRRR! 3 comics festival in
Pancevo, Serbia; and a gallery of narrative paintings by Jerry
Moriarty.  Reviewed books include "The Bush Junta," "Chris Ware,"
and "Mail Order Bride."

Indy Magazine was named "Best new comics magazine" in the Village
Voice's annual "Best of New York City" issue, dated October 6 -
12, 2004.

Indy Magazine is published online by Jeff Mason and is rigorously
edited by Bill Kartalopoulos. Indy began as a print journal edited
and published by Mason between 1993 and 1998, and subsequently ran
as an online magazine through 2001. In late 2002 Mason invited
Kartalopoulos to revive and edit the publication. Redesigned and
reinvented as an analytical quarterly, Indy Magazine relaunched in
January 2004.

Previous issues in Indy Magazine's current volume have included:
textual and graphic contributions from cartoonists including Art
Spiegelman, Megan Kelso, Tom Hart, and Jason Little; features on
subjects including Gustave Dore, R. O. Blechman, Ben Katchor, Milt
Gross, and Caran d'Ache; interviews with Francoise Mouly, Paul
Karasik, and David Mazzucchelli; and previews and reviews of new
and recently published work by Dan Clowes, Charles Schulz, Alan
Moore, A. B. Frost, Craig Thompson, James Sturm, and Dave Sim &
Gerhard, among others.

Previous issues are archived online alongside the current
edition: http://www.indyworld.com/indy/

Bill Kartalopoulos lives in Manhattan and also maintains the
"Egon" comics news and information website:

Jeff Mason is an attorney in Gainesville, Florida and publishes
the "Alternative Comics" line of comic books and graphic novels:

COMMON GROUNDS TRADE PAPERBACK
Dear Comic Reader of the World,

Hey. All apologies for not making this a "formal" kinda press
release, but.waitasec. Why should I apologize for that? Who really
likes press releases? They're the speed limit signs of life.
They're just kinda "there," and nobody really pays attention to
'em, right?

Anyhoo, a word or 417 about Common Grounds. The paperback
collecting the acclaimed 6-issue Top Cow mini-series written by
Troy Hickman hits Your Local Comic Store on Nov. 10. How
acclaimed? Hey.

This is the book that Guillermo del Toro called "Endearing,
moving, and painfully human!"
This is the book that Mark Waid called "Very clever, very sharp,
and surprisingly poignant!"
This is the book that caused Joe Quesada to say, "You guys are on
to something with this Hickman cat-he could be the surprise hit of
the year!"
This is the book that caused Troy's own mom to ponder, "So what
is it you do with these comic books? You type the words into the
bubbles above their heads?"

Aside from that, Common Grounds is an artistic tour de force.
Thirteen stories reside within the pages of the paperback,
illustrated by George P???rez, Ethan van Sciver, Chris Bachalo,
Carlos Pacheco, Sam Kieth, Michael Avon Oeming, Angel Medina and
Dan Jurgens. A veritable galaxy of stars!

But more than anything, this is a passion project, both for myself
and Troy Hickman. I first encountered Troy in Artist's Alley at
Wizard World Chicago, hawking hand-stapled issues of
Kinko's-copied mini-comics. Troy's stories were-and still are-
told with passion. And depth. And  feeling. And above all,
humanity. It's been a pleasure to bring these stories to life in
Common Grounds. Many have already tasted of this heady brew in the
original issues. Word-of-mouth has spread, as fan has told fan.
Now, it's your opportunity to get 'em all, in one place at one
time. I suggest you do.

Okay, promise kept: This wasn't your typical press release. But
then, Common Grounds is not your typical comic book.

Sincerely,

Jim McLauchlin
Editor-in-Chief, Top Cow Productions

NEW TEAM, NEW STORY FOR WITCHBLADE #80
Writer Ron Marz signs on

Top Cow Productions' release of Witchblade #80 will kick off an
exciting revitalization for the title, with the new creative team
of writer Ron Marz (The Darkness, Green Lantern) and artist Mike
Choi taking over. The pair will collaborate on the supernatural
cop drama starring NYPD detective Sara Pezzini, starting with the
6-part "Witch Hunt" storyline that runs through Witchblade #80-
#85. Witchblade #80 hits stores November 3rd, and as the launch of
a new arc, provides a perfect jumping-on point for new readers.

"I've been a fan of Ron's writing ever since I first saw it on
Silver Surfer back in 1990, when I was much younger, leaner, and
had more hair. In all seriousness, Ron is a top-flight writer who
brings a fresh perspective, all the while remaining very
respectful of that which has gone before in the series," said Top
Cow Editor-in-Chief, Jim McLauchlin. "It's a great pleasure to be
working with the man, and Witchblade #80 kicks ass in pretty much
every way a comic can."

In a recent interview, Marz told Brandon Huigens (of Samurai
Comics in Phoenix, AZ), "as far as I'm concerned [Witchblade] is
Top Cow's flagship book, and I want to return it to that kind of
prominence. I think there's been a perception for a while that
there's nothing going on here except for Sara running around in a
metal bikini. That's not the kind of story I'm interested in
telling. My job is to make you care about these characters, about
their lives and their stories. I'm really intrigued by Sara's
role as an NYPD detective; I want to get into with how she
balances 'the job' and this supernatural artifact she possesses."
