As I type this, on November 12, it is snowing outside and has been
for 8 hours or so. Here in the snowbelt of Southern New England
know as Worcester County we get more snow than any other area and
we are some 50 miles west of Boston. The elevation and
meteorological factors make it so. Tomorrow I should wake to 5 or
6 inches of snow, or more and it's only freaking November 12! It's
going to be a long winter.

Little bits of news this week.  Bill Rosemann found a new home a
DC - so will he be Our Man at DC? Marvel is suing NCSoft over City
of Heroes - likely to try and get an advantage for their own game
when it comes out by thinning out the competition. Oh, and one
small rumor about Wizard World possibly coming to Boston - maybe
as early as next year. Woo hoo!

Gotta get sleep to be in shape to shovel before reporting for my
shift at the comic store tomorrow. Maybe I should call Ken to see
if we are going to be open. (Private joke - we are open every day
except Christmas and Thanksgiving, no matter what!) If you are not
snowed in you might find these comics on the rack:

AVATAR PRESS
Warren Ellis Strange Killings Necromancer #6 (Of 6), $3.50

DC COMICS
    Fables #31, $2.50
    Firestorm #7, $2.50
Identity Crisis #6 (Of 7), $3.95 <--------Pick of the Week!
    JSA #67, $2.50
    Ocean #2 (Of 6), $2.95

MARVEL COMICS
    Iron Man #1, $3.50
X-Men The End Book One Dreamers And Demons #5 (Of 6), $2.99

SECOND TO SOME STUDIOS
Fade From Blue 5 Pack, $9.95

Speaking of "Fade", I am patiently waiting for the next issue as
I hope you are.  It really is very good. Pick up the above
mentioned 5 pack to see what I mean.

See you next time.

Falcon to Fly Solo?
Posted: Monday, November 8
Posted By: Markisan Naso

Today, Captain America & The Falcon writer Priest revealed that
the Falcon may soon be without a partner. At his website Priest
wrote that Ed Brubaker's upcoming Captain America series will
become firmly grounded in the Marvel Universe, forcing CAF to
become a different book.

Priest added that there are plans for a Falcon series at some
point in 2005. "The thinking, and this is more my opinion than
anything else, is that once the new team takes over CAP (with a
"P"), Marvel would want to put all of its efforts into that book
and not divide the Captain America audience. At the same time,
they'll want to protect what is interesting and unique about this
book as well. The offer on the table is for Joe Bennett and I to
simply continue what we were doing, only the book would be THE
FALCON. With Joe gone to DC [he signed an exclusive deal],
obviously, that's not going to happen, and I have not decided yet
whether to remain or to move on to Cool New Project That I Really
Can't Talk About."

Priest said an announcement on his "Cool New Project" and the
fate of CAF should come in about a month. In the meantime Priest
asked retailers not to cut their orders for CAF. "There's no
reason to. The book will go on."

Women Manga Artists Educate New Generations of Fans

San Francisco, CA --October 15th, 2004-- Fandom comes full circle
for women artists featured in Sakura Pakk, an anthology of short
manga stories that takes a new approach to furthering the black-
and-white graphic novel as a medium in the United States.

Manga has been an entertainment staple for sub-cultures of
American fans for over two generations, but only for those who are
either able to read Japanese, or have taken the time to
investigate and immerse themselves in the language and culture.
Book series were only available in specialty Japanese bookstores
or by mail order straight from Japan.

Over the past decade, mainstream readership of manga has increased
due to widespread availability of popular manga titles translated
into English. According to a recent article from a national
publication, manga "is the fastest-growing segment of the
publishing industry, with 2004 sales estimated at more than $120
million, up 20% from 2003."

Set for release in early November by multimedia company eigoMANGA,
Sakura Pakk aims to stand out from the abundance of manga already
available to fans and new readers. Sakura Pakk stories are not
translated from Japanese, but are written and drawn by primarily
English-speaking artists who are enthusiastic manga fans
themselves.

As a result, literary elements that usually get lost in
translation are virtually non-existent. Writers and artists make
it a point to define any obscure Japanese terms or historical
references in order to educate readers who are unfamiliar with the
nuances of Japanese culture.

Columns dispersed between stories feature activities for manga
fans, such as basic drawing lessons, articles on Japanese
traditions, holidays and customs, and costume competition events
known as "cosplay." The range of artistic styles and stories from
artist to artist reflect an evolution of the art form t hat has
taken place here within the U.S.

Melissa K. Smith, anthology editor comments, "I hope that we can
offer a wide variety of quality stories and art to our readers.
I like the anthology style books because they offer the
opportunity for many artists to be discovered and for the reader
to possibly find something they may not have picked up had it been
a single title manga."

Founded in August 2000, eigoMANGA is an independent media and
publishing company committed to developing, producing and
marketing original American "manga," or Japanese-influenced comic
books and graphic novels. eigoMANGA's integrated media offerings
include anime-themed television programming and anime-themed live
events.

Checker BPG Announces Winter '04 Publication of Dick Tracy: The
Collins Casefiles, Volume 3

Strips from 1978-1989 to see reprint in multiple volumes

DAYTON, Ohio:  Dick Tracy newspaper strips scripted by Road to
Perdition creator and mystery author Max Allan Collins between
1978 and 1989 will be reprinted for the first time in a series of
trade paperback collections from Checker Book Publishing Group,
with Dick Tracy: The Collins Files Volume 3 (ISBN 0-9753808-8-5,
$17.95, 180 pgs b/w paperback) seeing publication in Winter 2004.

Checker's two previous Dick Tracy collections have met with
across-the-board positive response, from critics to consumers. The
combination of Collins' writing and Fletcher's writing is
described by Michael Vance, a reviewer from Suspended Animation,
as "...intricate, innovative, [with] entertaining plots,
characterization, and dialogue.  Dick Tracy: The Collins Casefiles
is highly recommended."  The Collins/Fletcher strips were also
reviewed favorably by Booklist:

"Modern sensibilities precluded reviving the violence and
grotesquerie that were Gould hallmarks, so Collins instead
injected fast-paced plotting and a new topicality.  In another
change for the better, longtime Gould assistant Rick Fletcher took
over the artwork, bringing a contemporary look while remaining
faithful to Gould's classic designs and compositions."

The third volume collects the Dick Tracy strips that were
published from January 6, 1980 to January 17, 1981, and includes
the stories "Dick Tracy Meets Art Dekko", "Dick Tracy Meets
Breakdown", and "Dick Tracy Meets Torcher".

Chester Gould, a veteran cartoonist, proposed his most legendary
character, a dashing and daring detective for the newspaper comics
page in 1931.  Gould proposed titling his strip Plainclothes
Tracy, but Tribune head General Joseph Medill Patterson renamed
him Dick Tracy before giving him a slot in the paper. Modeled in
the image of the innovative Sherlock Holmes, Gould was inspired to
create new crime-fighting technology, including the two-way wrist
TV, closed circuit TV police line-up and the engineless car that
took Dick Tracy to the moon.

Gould produced the Tracy strip himself for 46 years before its
daily demands became too much and he turned scripting duties over
to the mystery and comics  writer, Max Allan Collins, and the art
to his longtime assistant Rick Fletcher.  When Fletcher passed
away, pencilling duties over the remainder of Collins tenure were
given over to Dick Locher, a future Pulitzer Prize winning
political cartoonist.  Gould maintained a role in the direction of
Tracy's adventures for less than a year before it was turned
entirely over to Collins, and Gould left the strip's byline after
nearly 50 years.

Checker Book Publishing Group was established in 2000 to bring the
absolute best of dormant, unpublished, and underpublished serial
comics material back to print.  These endeavors are pursued with
stalwart vigor by certain residents of Dayton, Ohio, in which city
the company maintains its offices.

LIGHTNINGSTRIKE PUBLISHING CLOSES UP SHOP AFTER FOUR YEARS

Tiverton, Ontario, Canada, November 12th, 2004 - As of midnight on
November 11th Lightningstrike Publishing has officially dissolved
as a business, primarily due to a two year financial battle with
Canadian bank CIBC.

Several independent comic book artists, creators, and
publishers are reacting with mixed emotions today at the
announcement that independent publisher Lightningstrike Publishing
has decided to close down its operations.  Many creators have been
left asking why this event is occurring at a time when the
company's future seemed to be its brightest ever. Fans that have
been waiting for the release of several highly promoted comics and
graphic novels have been left asking when and if they will ever
see some on the most anticipated books from their favorite
creators.

The closure comes after the break down of negotiations between
Lightningstrike and Nordon Collection Networks, who are
representing the CIBC. The problem arises from a two year dispute
involving a 2002 business investment between the small Canadian
publisher, and one of the big five banks of Canada.
Lightningstrike launched its successful comic book line, SMASH!
Comics, in 2002 with a funding loan from Bizsmart Inc. Nine months
after its launch, and six months after funding SMASH! Comics
Bizsmart, a subsidiary of CIBC, folded and went bankrupt. When
Bizsmart went bankrupt the company's final act was to demand all
payment in full on any outstanding balances that did not meet the
re-financing terms set forth by CIBC. Because a small press comic
book label was considered by the bank to be very high risk,
Lightningstrike was immediately declined for re-financing.

When Lightningstrike was unable to pay the outstanding balance
to CIBC immediately and in full, the matter was quickly handed
over to collection agency after collection agency, each one
continuing to inflate the balance payable. Things came to a head
when CIBC enlisted the services of the Nordon Collection Network
in summer of 2004. Negotiations broke down between Nordon and
Lightningstrike when the collection agency refused to deal with an
outside member willing to grant Lightningstrike a private loan to
cover the debts, or to accept monthly payments on the balance from
Lightningstrike. Nordon's stance was based on a huge
misunderstanding of the comic book industry. Agents from the
collection agency repeatedly stated that a small press comic
company with a website should easily be able to generate the
balance of $10,000 of disposable profit within 30 days. When faced
with Nordon's unwillingness to deal and unrealistic view of the
comic industry Lightningstrike owner Mike Gagnon was faced with a
tough decision.

"It all boils down to greed..." Said Gagnon, he added; "...I'd
rather make the choice to step out of business myself than be
forced out of business by a greedy corporation." Although
Lightningstrike has never gone bankrupt they are now using the
services of a financial trustee to resolve any and all
outstanding debts with creditors, which includes the CIBC.
Several highly publicized projects, studios, and subsidiaries of
Lightningstrike, including SMASH! Comics, have already begun to
find new homes and will be showing up again in the near future.
