Manga has been an entertainment staple for sub-cultures of American fans for over two generations, but only for those who are either able to read Japanese, or have taken the time to investigate and immerse themselves in the language and culture. Book series were only available in specialty Japanese bookstores or by mail order straight from Japan. Over the past decade, mainstream readership of manga has increased due to widespread availability of popular manga titles translated into English. According to a recent article from a national publication, manga "is the fastest-growing segment of the publishing industry, with 2004 sales estimated at more than $120 milli on, up 20% from 2003." Set for release in early November by multimedia company eigoMANGA, Sakura Pakk aims to stand out from the abundance of manga already available to fans and new readers. Sakura Pakk stories are not translated from Japanese, but are written and drawn by primarily English-speaking artists who are enthusiastic manga fans themselves. As a result, literary elements that usually get lost in translation are virtually non-existent. Writers and artists make it a point to define any obscure Japanese terms or historical references in order to educate readers who are unfamiliar with the nuances of Japanese culture. Columns dispersed between stories feature activities for manga fans, such as basic drawing lessons, articles on Japanese traditions, holidays and customs, and costume competition events known as "cosplay." The range of artistic styles and stories from artist to artist reflect an evolution of the art form that has taken place here within the U.S. Melissa K. Smith, anthology editor comments, "I hope that we can offer a wide variety of quality stories and art to our readers. I like the anthology style books because they offer the opportunity for many artists to be discovered and for the reader to possibly find something they may not have picked up had it been a single title manga." +++++ Dreamchilde Press Debuts QUANTUM: Rock of Ages Graphic Novel, back issues online. Over Role-Playing Game By ALEX VEIGA The Associated Press LOS ANGELES (AP) - Marvel Enterprises Inc. is suing two firms behind a computer superhero role-playing game it claims allows players to make virtual characters that are too similar to ``The Hulk,'' ``X-Men'' and other heroes in the comic book company's stable. The lawsuit claims South Korea-based NCSoft Corp. and San Jose- based Cryptic Studios Inc. violated Marvel's trademark characters in their game ``City of Heroes.'' Marvel seeks unspecified damages and an injunction against the two companies to stop using its characters. The personal computer game enables players to design superheroes' look and abilities and then battle against other players' characters in a virtual city. Like similar so-called massively multiplayer role-playing games where thousands of players can be playing simultaneously at any given time, ``City of Heroes'' claims to offer a myriad of combinations so that no two players' characters are exactly the same. But in its lawsuit, filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court, Marvel argues that the game's character creation engine easily allows players to design characters that are virtual copies of its own superheroes, including ``The Incredible Hulk.'' The company singles out a game feature for creating ``a gigantic, green, 'science-based tanker'-type hero that moves and behaves nearly identically'' to the ``Hulk.'' Players can also create a ``mutant-based'' hero powers and a costume nearly identical to Marvel's ``Wolverine,'' according to the suit. The New York-based company also took issue with the ability of players to go so far as to name their superhero creations after Marvel comic book characters. Marvel claims the firms' are responsible because the game is played on servers operated by the companies, raising the question of whether a company is responsible for their customers' actions on its computer server. Marvel also claims the companies have disrupted its ``existing and future'' business prospects for licensing its characters in video games similar to ``City of Heroes.'' An e-mail sent to NCSoft seeking comment was not immediately returned after-hours Thursday. No number was listed for Cryptic Studios. The Marvel lawsuit appears to be the first to raise this question in the scope of an online game. But early copyright infringement lawsuits brought by recording companies against pioneer file- sharing service Napster successfully argued Napster was liable for its customers' sharing of music online because they could do so only by accessing the company's computer system. The argument can still be made that ``City of Heroes'' is only empowering users to the same degree that an establishment like Kinkos enables customers to make paper copies of copyrighted material, said Fred von Lohmann, senior intellectual property attorney with the Electronic Frontier Foundation. "Is it a violation of copyright to make up a character in the virtual world or is that fair use?" von Lohmann said. "This is really untested ground in the courts." +++++ NEW AVENGERS...3rd NEW COVER! MARVEL ANNOUNCES THIRD VARIANT COVER FOR NEW AVENGERS #1 The response to Marvel Comics' make-over of their blockbuster super hero team the Avengers has been nothing short of phenomenal. As unveiled in USA Today, Marvel's "Dream Team" of costumed classics like Captain America, Spider-Man, Wolverine, Iron Man, Spider-Woman, and Luke Cage has set fire to fans' imaginations and has led to intense interest in The New Avengers #1. Due to popular demand, Marvel will go back to press on this introductory issue...and they've got it covered with yet another spectacular treat for frantic followers of this newest super- team. The third variant cover of The New Avengers #1 will feature an extra-special new cover by none other than Marvel Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada. Fans will be able to possess this titanic image in two distinct formats: Quesada's new cover and by linking the 6 alternate covers together as one. Marvel is also pleased to announce that retailers orders are not tied in to any of the other variant printings of The New Avengers #1 ...but fans will still want to grab theirs fast because when word gets out, this new printing of the introduction of the greatest super-team ever is going to FLY! Priest wrote: "There are things in the works for '05, for Marvel and for me, that are still pending approval from the higher-ups. We just can't talk about them and it was really wrong for information to be disseminated in Texas. But, for the time being, Tom [Brevoort] has said it's okay for me to say the following: CAF is not cancelled. CAF is not cancelled. CAF is not cancelled. Well, not exactly." At some point in 2005 (or maybe December of this year) Ed Brubaker will come aboard CAPTAIN AMERICA and bring that book firmly into the Marvel Universe. At some point in 2005, CAPTAIN AMERICA & THE FALCON will become... something else. There is a planned FALCON series (I guess Sam shoves Steve under a train), but specifically when this will happen and who will be writing and drawing: please don't ask me. I honestly don't know. We are awaiting approval for this plan, and for a new project that I've pitched. Once we have an approval on these projects and plans, I'll meet you back here to be more specific. But we are begging you, retailers, to not cut your orders. There's no reason to. The book will go on, but at some point Sam will shove Steve under a bus and take over the title in some fashion. The thinking, and this is more my opinion than anything else, is that once the new team takes over CAP (with a "P"), Marvel would want to put all of its efforts into that book and not divide the Captain America audience. At the same time, they'll want to protect what is interesting and unique about this book as well. The offer on the table is for Joe Bennett and I to simply continue what we were doing, only the book would be THE FALCON. With Joe gone to DC, obviously, that's not going to happen, and I have not decided yet whether to remain or to move on to Cool New Project That I Really Can't Talk About (this is the thing Associate Editor Andy Schmidt was choking on in Texas). We would have brought you all up to speed on this in about a month, by which time we'll have a yes or no on the new book, and a start date for FALCON and a yes or no from me and so forth. But, regrettably, we have to now talk about things that are not yet lined up properly and for that I apologize for this half- answer. It's the best I can manage right now. As for petitions and storming the castle to keep CAF alive: I'm not sure that would work. I mean, I'd love to keep going, but with Cap moving off of the title (not necessarily out of the book; the book would remain, essentially, the same), I'm not sure where I am creatively. And trying to hang on feels a little too much like fighting City Hall. All of which is to say this should be good news: the book really isn't going away, technically speaking, and hopefully I'll have something to announce in the near future, or I end up doing both things. Who knows. +++++ From THE BEAT by Heidi McDonald at http://www.comicon.com/thebeat/ November 12, 2004 Rojek thrown in slammer Ross Rojek, the former comic book retailer, and one-time owner of Another Universe.com has been sentenced to six years and three months in federal prison. He must also repay the $2.5 million he bilked people out of in a fraud scheme that involved a bogus facial recognition system he claimed would thwart terrorists. Ross Allen Rojek, 37, was sentenced to six years and three months in federal prison after pleading guilty in July to mail and securities fraud stemming from bogus investments he began offering in 2002. Rojek told investors he was developing a system that would automatically match distinct facial features to a database. That company he called Face Information Technology, known as Face IT, the FBI said. He simultaneously operated Sentry Biometrics, with the same purported goal. Both companies were allegedly run by a trio of veteran communications executives who didn't exist. During the same period, he ran American Equity Group LLC under the alias of Jason Williams, borrowing the name of a former Sacramento Kings basketball player, the FBI said. That company raised $1.3 million by falsely promising to buy distressed commercial property and resell it at a profit. +++++ From the Comics Continuum at http://www.comicscontinuum.com/: ELEKTRA MOVIE UPDATE Eletkra: HBO First Look, a behind-the-scenes special of the Elektra movie, will debut on HBO on Tuesday, Jan. 4 at 9:45 p.m., The Continuum has learned Like many of the First Look specials, Elektra's will be 13 minutes in length. MARTIN'S TO PUBLISH THE YEAR'S BEST COMICS AND MANGA ANTHOLOGY IN 2005 In the tradition of St. Martin's venerated anthologies such as the Locus Award-winning The Year's Best Science Fiction edited by Gardner Dozois and the World Fantasy Award-winning anthology The Year's Best Fantasy and Horror edited by Ellen Datlow, Kelly Link & Gavin Grant, comes The Year's Best Comics and Manga. Since 2000 comics and manga has been one of the largest growing areas in the book industry. It maintains one of the most diverse readerships--girls 14-25 as well as men of all ages--and has been growing annually since its emergence as a mainstream bookstore commodity. Edited by Byron Preiss and Howard Zimmerman, The Year's Best Comics and Manga will be published in Autumn, 2005, and will present a collection of the best comics and manga published June, 2003-December, 2004. The material will range from work published by small, independent presses to the giants of the industry, as well as feature an introduction by New York Times bestselling author Neil Gaiman. For over twenty years Byron Preiss has been one of the leading publishers of graphic work, building a reputation as one of the foremost authorities on comics and manga in the publishing industry. WIZARD: 12K @ WW: DALLAS Wizard Conventions, along with its sister company, Wizard Entertainment Group, the country's foremost authority on everything related to comic books, gaming, anime, toys, collectibles and pop-culture, announced new attendance records for its second annual Wizard World Dallas convention, held this weekend in Arlington, Texas (November 5-7). The show exceeded expectations, ushering 12,000 fans through its doors, demonstrating an increase of more than 30 percent from last year's event. Legions of fans crammed into the Arlington Convention Center to get up-close-and-personal with a host of comic book and pop-culture talent that included David Goyer (writer/director, Blade: Trinity), Jessica Biel and Ryan Reynolds (actors, Blade: Trinity), Erica Durance (Smallville), Jason Mewes (Clerks, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back), Paul Dini (writer, Lost), Jim Lee (artist, Superman, Batman), Michael Turner (artist, Fathom, Soulfire) and Marc Silvestri (artist Witchblade, X-Men) among scores of creators. Wizard World Dallas caps off a big week for Wizard Conventions, which announced the addition of Wizard World Boston last week (September 30 - October 2, 2005 at the Bayside Expo Center). Wizard World Dallas - along with this year's Philadelphia, Chicago and Los Angeles events - have pushed yearly attendance figures well past the 100,000 mark, making the company's shows the largest pop-culture draw in the country. "The success that we experienced with Wizard World Dallas is a powerful example of the ever-growing interest in comic books and related properties, as well as fans' reliance upon Wizard to deliver an experience that they simply can't find anywhere else," said Gareb Shamus, CEO of Wizard Entertainment Group. "Wizard attendees know that they can attend our events and meet the figures that are shaping the direction of pop-culture - guys like David Goyer and Paul Dini that grew up with comic books and are now in power positions to green light the comic-influenced properties that they'd like to bring to life." At the show, attendees enthusiastically applauded Goyer as he unveiled never-before-seen footage of New Line's upcoming Blade: Trinity. Goyer was joined by the film's stars Jessica Biel (Cellular, Texas Chainsaw Massacre and 7th Heaven) and Ryan Reynolds (Van Wilder) for a panel that gave Wizard World Dallas attendees the inside track on one of Hollywood's most highly anticipated comic-themed properties of the holiday season. Additionally, Paul Dini, writer for ABC's highly acclaimed show "Lost," previewed exclusive footage of upcoming episodes to a packed house of fans. The show also featured scores of the comic book industry's top artists and illustrators and many exclusives - only available at the show collectibles - from industry leaders including Palisades Toys, Wiz Kids and Graffiti Design's Giant Size Silent Bob action figure as well as huge tournaments from some of the biggest names in gaming such as Sony PlayStation, NC Soft, Upper Deck's Yu-Gi- Oh and Score Entertainment's Inuyasha. With the doors to Wizard World Dallas closed, fans can look forward to Wizard World Los Angeles, scheduled for March 18-20, 2005 at the Long Beach Convention Center. The popular Wizard World event series will return to the Arlington Convention Center next year from November 4-6, 2005. For additional information and a list of upcoming shows, please visit www.wizarduniverse.com PAD WRITES FF MOVIE NOVELIZATION At his weblog, Peter David has posted that Marvel is again keeping it in the family - he has been tapped to write the novelization of the upcoming Fantastic Four film, and offered up a few comments on some fans' worries about the tone. David posted: As for the FF film, I can tell you with authority (but without going into detail) that it is not at all the goofball comedy as first reported, but instead faithful in tone and style to the Lee/Kirby comics. There's some major changes in terms of the origin, but less than what they did in "Ultimate FF," and besides, c'mon--four people trying to get to the moon before the Russians? Just a TAD dated. How do I know this? Because I've been hired by Pocket Books to do the novelization of the film. So this'll be my fourth novelization of a Marvel comics movie. ROSEMANN JOINS DC COMICS Newsarama has learned that, after a tour that took him to sunny Florida, former Marvel and CrossGen marketing manager Bill Rosemann is back in New York, and this time, has settled into a new home at DC Comics. According to sources at DC, Rosemann started work as Manger: Creative Services on Monday, a newly created position within Creative Services department. Formerly, Rosemann spent nearly ten years at Marvel, eventually rising to the position of Marketing Communications Manager, or, as he was better known to readers of Marvel Comics and online: "Your Man @ Marvel." While at Marvel, Rosemann dipped his foot in the comic writing pond, writing a handful of short stories as well as 2002's Deadline miniseries, illustrated by Guy Davis. In October of 2002, Rosemann left Marvel, and by early 2003, had joined CrossGen as Director of Marketing Communications. Rosemann eventually rose to the position of Senior VP - Publishing at CrossGen, and is widely credited for the diversification of the publisher's line to include such titles as El Cazador, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and Abadazad. Amidst the company's financial troubles of late 2003-2004, Rosemann left the company in April of this year. Since then, there had been a few "Rosemann sightings" around the industry, including the writing credit on a special Marvel comic book created for Home Depot and illustrated by Pat Oliffe that featured Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four and the Home Depot Heroes. At DC, Rosemann will report to Ron Perazza. The Creative Services department at the publisher is responsible for a variety of tasks, including maintaining DC's website, producing and managing custom comics, special projects, advertising inserts, and acting as a liaison between DC's creative and business departments. In regards to how the new hire fits relative to any former Marvel/DC animosity, a source at DC said that Rosemann always stayed clear of any of the serious mudslinging, and was a professional through the day he left his position - earning and maintaining the respect of those at DC and around the industry. +++++ From ComiX-Fan at http://www.comixfan.com/xfan WIZARD WORLD TEXAS 2004 DAY 1 REPORT It's almost the end of the year, and so Wizard World holds its final convention for 2004 at Wizard World Texas. ComiX-Fan was on the floor to cover the first day's breaking news and antics. Beyond the DC Universe: Wildstorm, Vertigo, and more Wildstorm: Majestic: Writers will be using ideas in this series that were considered "too expansive" for the DC Universe. The series will feature Wildstorm guest stars as Majestic reaches out to others he used to know in this universe before he left, as well as-- potentially-- guest stars from the DC universe. Jim Lee joked that Wolverine would be in issue #4. Lee also stated that Big, big, big, things where in store for 2006 in the Wildstorm Universe and that the upcoming events in Majestic would be pivotal to it all. Legend: is a new series written by Howard Chakyn and drawn by Russ Heath. It is based on The Gladiator, by Philip Wylie. Ocean: Warren Ellis' sci-fi opera has already been written, with several issues already in the can. Razor's Edge: Brubaker will write a 5-issue arc in 2005. Elaborating on the big, big, big event coming in 2006 for Wildstorm, Jim Lee hinted that Gen 13 would relaunch with him involved with the art. He also stated that Stormwatch: Team Achilles would not relaunch since it needed a cooling period to build up interest... but that the characters would be seen in other books in the future. IPC: Albion: A new series from IPC based on classic 1960s British heroes. Alan Moore is writing the overview with Dave Gibbons working on character designs and covers. Vertigo: Neverwhere: The comic adaptation of Neil Gaiman's novel, scripted by Gaiman with art by Glenn Fabry, will be coming out in Spring. DC/Vertigo attempted to show the trailer for the new Constantine movie, based on Hellblazer, but could only get the sound to work. Jim Lee recreated the action including using his hands for guns while attendees listened. Humanoids: I am Legion: It was mentioned that this would be an annual book with John Cassaday since he is still working on Astonishing X-Men and Planetary. Also mentioned, DC/Humanoids are looking at a book from Geoff Johns and Butch Guice that will be similar to I am Legion. The book is seen as part of DC's commitment to Global Diversity. During the Q&A Jim Lee mentioned he would love to collaborate with Alex Ross again as he did on the Wizard Superman cover. He also stated that his art has evolved to using less lines and looking more naturalistic, as in "not like Psylocke and her broken back" in X-Men. Top Cow panel: Mark Waid and Marc Silvestri, the creators of the NEW Top Cow sensation Hunter-Killer and many more discussed their new book, plus ALL the Cow goodness for '04 and '05! Wanted the critically acclaimed book by Mark Millar and JG Jones is collected in a hardcover first quarter, 2005. A paperback version will be available second quarter 2005. Wanted #6, the conclusion to the popular series, will be out soon. Aspen panel: The Aspen crew (Michael Turner, Peter Steigerwald, Koi Turnbull, and Frank Mastromauro) met with fans for a one- on-one panel to find out what Aspen has in store for 2005! The crowd eagerly watched a slide presentation that began with Identity Crisis covers to #5, #6, and #7, the hotly anticipated conclusion to the story which had the most recognizable costumes of DC heroes dangling in front of a white background. Next, the crowd was greeted to covers of Aspen's core titles: Soulfire and Fathom. It was announced that Soulfire #4 will have 4 different covers to go along with its release, two by Michael Turner and one by Jim Lee and J. Scott Campbell. Look for all four covers in Wizard #159 - on sale at the end of the month. After showing off the cover to issue six, the next few slides showed off a ton of exclusive covers available at Wizard World Texas (to see these covers click here for exclusive comics) including Fathom: Dawn of War and Soulfire. Turner and company answered fans questions about future projects like Ekos and maybe doing some work for DC again and even Marvel. Turner appeased the crowd by offering no timetable yet on when Ekos will begin, mainly because Soulfire's story has now grown. "It started out being 8 issues, now it's 12 and possibly 15," Turner said. As for Marvel work, Turner quietly said it's being talked about. Koi Turnbull was also named permanent artist on Fathom with the departure of Talent Caldwell, who, after doing some Marvel work, will return to film school.
