NEW YORK TIMES ANNOUNCES THE BLACK PANTHER'S RETURN AS MARVEL
COMICS TEAMS WITH WRITER AND DIRECTOR REGGIE HUDLIN TO
REINTRODUCE THE FIRST-EVER BLACK SUPER HERO TO THE HIP-HOP
GENERATION

New Series to Recreate Origin of Character Who Broke the Color
Barrier in Superhero Comics

NEW YORK - The Black Panther, the first-ever black super hero -
created by Marvel Comics in the 1960s, will return with a new
series in February 2005, coinciding with Black History Month.
The series, which recreates the origin of one of the comic
world's greatest cult heroes is being written by Reginald Hudlin,
a pioneer of the modern black hip-hop film movement with "House
Party." Reginald is also currently directing and producing "The
Bernie Mac Show" and recently authored the comic novel "Birth of
a Nation."  Legendary Marvel illustrator John Romita, Jr. has
recreated and updated the Black Panther's appearance.

The Black Panther was created in 1966 by writer Stan Lee and
artist Jack Kirby, the legendary team behind such iconic Marvel
characters as Spider-Man and X-Men.  The Panther was first
introduced as an antagonist in Fantastic Four #52, where it was
made clear that this complicated hero was no villain.

Marvel and Hudlin's decision to bring back the Black Panther now
is a reflection of how the richness of the character is relevant
today.  Lee and Kirby created the Black Panther during the
turbulent 1960s - during the heart of the Civil Rights movement.
President Lyndon B. Johnson had signed the Civil Rights Act two
years prior and Martin Luther King, Jr. had led his famous March
from Selma to Montgomery, AL the year before.  The character's
name predates the rise of the Black Panther Party in Oakland,
California.

Lee and Kirby - creators who had always been sensitive to how
Marvel characters should reflect the diversity of the "real"
world - have provided Hudlin with the platform to introduce the
character's relevance to a new revolution happening in America
today:  the emergence of the Hip-Hop generation.

"When Marvel first created the Black Panther, there was
excitement and real magic in the character for me," said Hudlin.
"The Black Panther is a king of a powerful yet untapped country,
a son avenging his father's death, and a man educated in the
finest schools. I'm thrilled to be given the opportunity to bring
back the character in a way that not only respects the original
idea of Stan Lee, but also explores a side of his history that
fans have never seen before."

The new series will create an adventure that is of epic
proportions, returning to the origins of the Black Panther and
his ancestral home of Wakanda, a fictional country in the heart
of Africa. Wakanda has remained elusive to the modern world,
despite its advancements in science and technology, as well as
its vast resource of a precious fossil fuel, vibranium.  Not only
does Wakanda's independence block the total dominance of Africa
by colonial powers, its cultural evolution has gone unchecked for
centuries.

It's from this exiting culture that Hudlin begins to tell the
rich history of the Black Panther and bring him into prominence
within the Marvel universe.  The first six issues will recreate
the legacy of the character for Marvel fans - his family history,
his enemies, and his strength. The second six issues will begin
to integrate the character into the Marvel universe.  By the end
of the second story the Black Panther will have impacted every
major character in the universe.

"Reggie Hudlin's idea to bring back the Black Panther with a
storyline that repositioned the character's role from that of a
niche character to much larger role in the Marvel universe was so
fresh and exciting, we were all captivated with the idea," said
Joe Quesada, editor-in-chief, Marvel Publishing.  "In fact, we
see the Black Panther taking on the same kind of prominence in
the Marvel universe as Spider-Man."

DISNEY'S OFFICIAL WORD ON BUYING CROSSGEN

DISNEY PUBLISHING WORLDWIDE EXPANDS COMICS PORTFOLIO WITH
ACQUISITION OF ASSETS FROM CROSSGEN ENTERTAINMENT

Disney Publishing Worldwide (DPW) today announced the acquisition
of the assets of CrossGen Entertainment, Inc., an innovative
publisher of comic books and graphic novels, fortifying DPW's
position as the world's leading publisher of children's comics.
CrossGen's stable of epic fantasy and science fiction properties
include Abadazad, Ruse, Way of the Rat, Meridian, Mystic, Route
666 and Sojourn. Disney represents approximately 50 percent of all
children's comic magazines sold around the world, reaching readers
of all ages with 220 million comics each year.

"To maintain our leadership position, we are committed to
developing and acquiring top-quality, powerful content that
expands our rich comic portfolio and CrossGen has some great
properties" said DPW President Deborah Dugan. "In light of
recently reported declines in reading , we are developing creative
new approaches using comics to engage children in the written
word, and we hope to benefit from CrossGen's experience in this
area."

Named Comic Publisher of the Year among small comics publishers
for three consecutive years, CrossGen was founded in 1998 and by
2000 had grown into one of the largest independent comic
publishers in the U.S. The company's intellectual properties are
known for their excellence in production, artistry and writing;
their compelling stories; and their multi-dimensional characters.
Other Cross Gen assets include a comics-based educational and
literacy program; the proprietary BeeVee Player and Chameleon
technologies that enables enhanced online publishing of comics and
magazines as well as new digital business models; and an
initiative to publish comics online in several countries,
including China. "Given Disney's legacy in comics, global
distribution relationships and talent for multi-media
storytelling, I believe we have found a great home for these
properties," said CrossGen's CEO and founder Mark Alessi.

One of the first CrossGen titles DPW plans to develop is
Abadazad, a complex and deeply engrossing story of a girl's
search for her lost brother, set in a fantastical world within a
world. Four Abadazad books are already slated to be published by
Hyperion Books for Children, an imprint of DPW.

"The most successful publishing properties also generate
excitement throughout Disney, including its motion picture,
television and games units," Dugan said, "and Abadazad lends
itself perfectly to Disney's synergistic philosophy."
Disney's long history in comic books began when the first Mickey
Mouse and Donald Duck comic magazines were published in 1935 and
1942, respectively. Disney Publishing Worldwide has enjoyed
tremendous success with W.I.T.C.H, a comic magazine for tween
girls that debuted in Italy in 2001, and is now the fourth
largest magazine in the world in terms of international editions
(33 editions generating over 1 million copies/month). W.I.T.C.H.
books are currently published in 20 countries, and a TV series
launch is planned for early 2005.
Disney Publishing Worldwide is the largest children's publisher
in the world, with books and magazines in 55 languages in 75
countries, reaching more than 100 million readers each month.

1 - National Endowment for the Arts, June 2004
2 - Comic Publisher of the Year in the under 5% Market Share
category by retailers using Diamond Comic Distributors, Inc.
Annual awards are presented to publishers based on votes

Retailers hopping mad at Dark Horse

This week it was reported that Dark Horse had signed a deal with
Barnes & Noble for the bookstore chain to produce its own
exclusive hardcover versions of AKIRA and TRIGUN. According to
Publisher's Weekly:

Among the first books to be released is a B&N Books hardcover
edition of Katsuhiro Otomo's apocalyptic cult classic Akira,
priced at $14.95. The book's original trade paper edition,
released in 2000, was priced at $24.95. B&N Books is also
releasing DH's hit science fiction manga Trigun by Yashuhiro
Nightow (about 50,000 copies in print) in hardcover for $11.95.
It was released last year in paper for $14.95.

The idea of cheap hardcovers exclusive to a book chain did not
sit too well with comics retailers; in fact it was about as
popular as when Marvel did the same thing with its Masterworks.

Nicolas Cage is GHOST RIDER after all!

Apparently last week's story about Nicolas Cage as Johnny Blaze
not being a done deal was just Cage being, well, cagey.
A story on an Australian news site reports that a publicist
confirmed that it is a go -- Cage just didn't know he could
confirm it. So he was...ACTING! How nutty is that?
Publicist Fiona Searson said there was no uncertainty about the
production.

"None of it is true," she said.

"The film will be made here and he (Cage) has signed a contract
... They're due to start (filming) at the end of January and
that's when they always were due to start and that's what they're
working towards."

The production is apparently of some import down under, as it
will be "the biggest feature film made in Victoria, and is seen
as crucial for the future of the Central City Studios in the
Docklands precinct."

The Beat is all for the Docklands -- and all for Nic Cage finally
getting to be the superhero he's always dreamed of being. You go,
boy!

Comic Dollars Skid 16% in October Vs. 2003
 November 16, 2004
Sales of comics and graphic novels skidded 16% in October 2004
vs. the previous year period.  Comics were down 20% while graphic
novels were up 12%.  The tough comparisons ranged from the top to
the bottom of the list.  At the top, October 2003 included
JLA/Avengers #2 and Amazing Spider-Man #500, both up-priced
titles that sold a lot of copies.  And at the bottom, the 300th
title in October 2003 sold over three times as many copies as the
300th title in October 2004.

We looked at comparisons by publisher to get a better feel for
the changes.  Both Marvel and DC were down by double digits, with
Marvel down 11% and DC down 14%.  Image was down 65%, and
CrossGen, which accounted for 3.4% market share in 2003, was gone
in 2004.  Publishers with an emphasis on manga were up by a lot
in October 2004, bucking the trend.  Dark Horse, for example, was
up 20%; and Tokyopop was up 65%.

But even dramatic changes like this are not definitive for a
period as short as one month.  A relatively small number of
titles and changes in reporting periods can have a big impact on
a period this short.  Once we have a look at all of the months in
Q4 2004, we'll have a better idea as to whether this is a trend
or an aberration.

the corresponding action figures from Marvel Legends Series 8,

Marvel Reprints Wolverine
In 'Must-Have' Edition
 November 19, 2004
Marvel will reprint the material from the sold-out Wolverine issues
#20-22 in a "Must Have" edition.  These are the first three issues
of the "Enemy of the State" storyline by Mark Millar and John
Romita Jr.

The title will be Marvel Must Haves:  Wolverine 20-22, and carries

No Future
By Blair Marnell

We've got another super-sized ATR this week, so let's just jump
right into it:

Ultimate Activision

Word out of Activision is that the Ultimate Spider-Man video game
is proceeding with active participation from Brian Bendis, and the
release date is tentatively planned for mid-to-late 2005. This
will be the second "Ultimate" game from Activision, as X- Men:
Legends was largely based on Ultimate X-Men. Mark Millar is also
rumored to be working on an "Ultimate" related game or series of
games for Activision.

For old school Marvel fans, there is a Classic Spider-Man game in
development for 2006 and a Fantastic Four game set to coincide
with the release of the FF movie next summer.

All That And Moore

According to some late rumors coming out of Wizard World Texas,
Tony Moore, the original and current cover artist of The Walking
Dead, is just about finished with the paperwork from DC that put
him on a new title for Vertigo. Moore's new project may be up for
a 2005 release date.
