NEGATIVE BURN, The Very Best from 1993-1998 on sale 01.26 $19.95 trade paperback black & white 200 pages written & illustrated by VARIOUS cover by KEN MEYER JR. CONCEPT Negative Burn was an anomaly, merging together genres, pushing boundaries and allowing the top comic book talent in the world an opportunity to experiment and tell stories that they wanted to tell. When told that a black & white anthology title without a defined theme would never last beyond five issues, Negative Burn exceeded all expectations by running 50 issues and ending of its own decree, garnering numerous industry award nominations along the way. The biggest stars in the industry (Neil Gaiman, Brian Bolland, Alan Moore, Warren Ellis, Moebius, Peter David, P. Craig Russell, etc.) co-existed side-by-side with the next wave of superstars (Brian Bendis, David Mack, Paul Pope, John Cassaday, Frank Quitely, Jeff Smith, Terry Moore, Paul Jenkins, Mike Wieringo, etc.) to produce perhaps the most eccentric anthology title in the history of comics. This volume takes the very best from the first 50 issues of this prestigious anthology and presents them all together here for the first time. Contributors read like a virtual "who's who" of comic talent: Brian Bolland, Alan Moore, P. Craig Russell, Dave Johnson, Dave Gibbons, Evan Dorkin, Phil Hester, Arthur Adams, Edvin Biukovic, Bob Burden, Zander Cannon, Mark Chiarello, Guy Davis, Michael Gaydos, Danijel Zezelj, Darko Macan, Mike Wieringo, Terry Moore, Paul Pope, Andrew Robinson, Danijel Zezelj, Jim Mahfood, and numerous others. Features stories from NEGATIVE BURN #1-50 NEGATIVE BURN is (tm) and (c) Joe Pruett, James Pruett and Charles Moore 2005. All Rights Reserved. Desperado Publishing, based out of Gaijin Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, was created with the sole idea of gathering the comic industry's most respected and popular talents under one banner, and allowing them the freedom to craft their own creations while retaining complete control of them. "Desperado is about offering choices and variety," says Desperado Publishing publisher, Joe Pruett. "There is no genre that we're married to, so we believe we have something to offer readers and fans of all tastes and likes. The only common thread that runs through our product is quality-quality in talent and quality in production." +++++ Arklite(tm) and Thin-X-Tender(tm) Special With the holidays fast approaching, we at Bill Cole Enterprises have come up with two new Holiday Specials. Writer/Ad Coordinator Vince Brusio is the designated editorial writer for Previews' "The Splash Page" which is our source material Big Boys Launch Top Cow's Hunter-Killer Don't wait for the trade-paperback. Artist Marc Silvestri and writer Mark Waid did not create Top Cow's Hunter -Killer to follow the book market trend. Hunter-Killer is planned as an ongoing series, old school style. Expect continuity. Expect to wait impatiently for the next installment of a story. And expect a bang-up job that's going to be a big payoff for readers as both of the title's creators have plenty of experience in developing stories that make the history books. Before they sat down to create Hunter -Killer, Waid and Silvestri already had plenty of accolades that make for impressive resumes. Waid had been the creative force behind DC Comic's monumental Kingdom Come series, and has gone on to other successful comic ventures such as DC's The Flash and Superman: Birthright, as well as Marvel Comics' Fantastic Four. Silvestri has been in the business for over 17 years. He earned a loyal fan base with his late-1980s stints on The Uncanny X-Men and Wolverine, and later moved on to create Image Comics in 1992. The planets aligned one night, and from that alchemy came the opportunity for both creators to work on something they felt was a departure from standardized "black ops" storylines. Mark Waid explains that he wanted to create a band of patriots whose job it is to keep our hands clean. In other words, a team of adventurers who would make the United State walk the straight and narrow path. Those who are above the law (a tricky and debatable move for any government). The possibilities for disaster were endless - too much temptation for Waid and Silvestri to pass up. And so, Ellis and Wolf were created. These small and clandestine high- tech operatives are the "fourth branch" of government for the United States. And one can only hope that the responsibility of this "Failsafe Branch" of government only functions to mitigate the U.S. government, so as to keep it from overstepping its bounds. Because what will happen should Ellis and Wolf overstep their bounds? With inking chores handled by Joe Weems, and coloring handled by veteran Steve Firchow, Hunter-Killer #1 will be one of Top Cow's biggest debuts to date. Look for it in the Image Comics section of Previews! Black Panther Back on the Prowl Marvel Comics' one-and-only Wakandan super-hero returns triumphantly this February in the pages of Black Panther #1. Fans who loved the previous incarnation of T'challa in the Marvel Knights series - helmed by Christopher Priest - will be just as thrilled with the character's new direction in a book written by Reginald Hudlin and illustrated by John Romita Jr. Romita you undoubtedly know from Wolverine and Amazing Spider- Man. But who is Reginald Hudlin? If you've seen Hollywood movies House Party and Boomerang, you've seen Hudlin at work. He plans to target the same hip hop faithful in his comic as he did in his movies. This is a T'challa who's with it. The new Black Panther book is all about showcasing a super-hero in the cinematic spotlight. This is a book served up in social satire, and bleeding all-out action for the reader who wants his stories fast and furious. T'challa's come a long way since Stan Lee and Jack Kirby introduced him as an antagonist in 1966's Fantastic Four #52. And if you want to see the new attitude up-close and personal, we suggest you check out Black Panther #1 in the upcoming Marvel Previews! Darkchylde Gets a Makeover Who out there was collecting comics in the 90s? Okay, next question, who out there remembers Randy Queen's Darkchylde? Ever wonder if that long-legged diva of death would return to fold? If you did, the waiting is over, because Randy Queen has put a new twist on his creator-owned character starting with Manga Darkchylde #1 from Dark Horse Comics. You heard right. Darkchylde goes manga in a new 5-issue mini- series that's been crafted for all ages. Gone is the appeal to a PG-13 audience. The bad girl/good girl image of the 90s is gone. Mr. Queen has decided that it was time for a change. Evolution was the key. Not losing sight of what made Ariel so interesting to readers, Queen was careful to ensure that although this is a new manga/cartoon interpretation of Darkchylde, the book is still based on the same idea of a girl who can become the monsters from her nightmares. It's just a different universe. But this new setting comes with familiar problems, as Ariel Chylde must confront the Sinister Sisters of Shadow in Salem, Georgia. It's a great time to once again embrace Randy Queen's demonic darling! You can read more about her new mini-series by check out Manga Darkchylde #1 in the Dark Horse section of Previews! Bone Colored How do you re-write comics history after a series has concluded? Do you re-launch the work to make it more "modern?" Do you have other writers and artists re-interpret the work with their own brand of goggles? Or do you opt for tweaking the work, making it better, stronger, faster? It appears that Jeff Smith wants to make his own Six Million Dollar Man. He's been thinking about future generations of Bone readers, and he wants them to have a little something extra. The old rule of thumb is to not re-invent the wheel, but make it better. And that's what Jeff Smith is doing by letting Graphix reprint his series in full-color. So it's last call for the original Bone volumes 1-6. Cartoon Books is taking these books off the market at the end of December to make way for the new colorized Bone, published under Scholastic Books' Graphix imprint. For those readers out there who may just be learning about Jeff Smith's opus for the first time, now is the perfect opportunity to start catching up on one of independent comics' most critically acclaimed series. Seldom does a book for all ages reach such creative peaks as Jeff Smith's Bone. First unveiled in 1991, Bone introduced us to three Bone Cousins. Fone Bone, Phoney Bone and Smiley Bone were separated by a swarm of Locusts and lost in a vast, uncharted desert. Over the years, readers followed the exploits of the Bones, and were introduced to a wide variety of characters that ranged from a valiant beautiful girl (Thorn), to a strong-armed Gran'Ma, to stupid, stupid rat creatures. Fone Bone is the hero of the series, as he not only copes with any given situation, but consistently saves his cousin Phoney Bone from self-imploding schemes. Jeff Smith became the toast of comics, with accolades from fans, critics and pros like Neil Gaiman and Will Eisner for one simple reason: Bone is a heart-wrenching, original story that is as brilliantly executed as it is conceived. Don't miss the opportunity to read this classic in its re-tooled version by checking out the Bone Volume 1: Out of Boneville Color Edition in the Comics section of Previews! The Guide Gets Updated Once more, it's time to pay attention to what we have in our acid-free boxes, and see if they're ready to pay our way though college. Just how much can you ask for a mint copy of Batman #609? Is Kevin Smith's debut on Daredevil #1 still hot as Salma Hayek's figure? The answers to these questions are in The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide Volume 35. Covering more than a century of comic book history, the Guide delves further and broader into the reaches of comics history with articles on the earliest comics (from 1754) to comics in schools from the 1920s. But the Guide is not essential only because of its articles and back-issue values. Readers also get updated market reports, key sales tips, in-depth historical information, tips on grading and collecting, and more. A mammoth tome that lets you see how it's worth your time to check out even those comics that you didn't bag and board! Besides the well-researched pricing, this 35th edition of The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide celebrates the 70th anniversary of Little Lulu, the 25th anniversary of New Teen Titans #1, the 20th anniversary of Crisis on Infinite Earths, and the history of Iron Man from the beginning to the present. This edition comes with a choice of two covers: a stunning recreation of Tales of Suspense #39 by John K. Snyder III (Doctor Mid-Nite) and a fond remembrance of Little Lulu by the beloved, late Lulu artist John Stanley. Look for The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide Volume 35 from Gemstone Publishing in the Comics section of Previews. DC Icon Heavy Weights Their lives have been dissected over and over again in comic books that have been published since the Golden Age. Batman and Lex Luthor have become synonymous with the terms "good" and "evil" After all, one's a Justice Leaguer, and the other has chaired the Legion of Doom! But what really makes these two men relevant today is the fact that they're both...cool paperweights from Monogram! What did you think we were going to say? They're going on tour to sing Broadway show tunes? No, these two heavyweights are instead going to volunteer to keep your desktop free from clutter, and help you keep relevant papers in one place so you can pay your bills on time. Stepping up to the plate are the Justice League: Batman Mini Paperweight and Justice League: Lex Luthor Mini Paperweight. The object is to use the Batman paperweight to keep track of checks, memos, and money orders. You know, good news. Use the Lex paperweight to hold down bills, foreclosure notices, past-due notices, and such. You know, bad news that says it's time to pack up and get out of town. Both hand-detailed figural paperweights feature dynamic poses. Each character has his respective icon on the paperweight base. Look for both in the Collectibles and Novelties section of Previews! IDW Touts Nile, Zombie, and Corben If you were to manage your own studio in Hollywood, what team would you want making your monster movies? Some idiot in a smart suit who talks big, but knows squat? Or one of the guys at IDW who's going to be on the new Bigfoot? Hey, if you answered the question, you chose IDW. Because those guys have got it together, Jack. Anyone digging today's horror scene will tell you that the creators working on books at IDW are having way too much fun. The books show it. IDW's brought back horror with a bang. So many hits are coming from that house it makes the old schoolers think they're living back in Chaos! Comics heyday. The latest piece of meat they're touting is Bigfoot #1, written by Steve Niles and Rob Zombie, and illustrated by the maestro, Richard Corben. Corben alone is enough to raise your eyebrows, but Mr. Superbeast himself is what really adds to the alchemy. Rob has been spreading his wings with his own Spookshow book, but teamed up with Niles and Corben makes us think of new expectations. Bottom line: we want to see a hole in the ground. A big crater. But there's little doubt that we won't be hurt for destruction. In a four-issue limited series, we're going to see a monstrous ape-man stomping around the woods of the Pacific Northwest. And he'll be feeling the lash of three guys who love horror books. Look for Bigfoot #1 from IDW Publishing in the Comics section of Previews! A Giant Among Men Say the name "Stan Lee" to any comics fan at a convention, and then ask about the gentleman's nickname. Is Stan "The Man" Lee appropriate? Well-deserved? After cleaning yourself off from whatever food is thrown at you, you will be certain to know that such a question in the future will be met with the same reaction. After all, this is the man who helped design Spider-Man. This is the man who helped create Marvel. But what happens to old veterans in comics? Do they go the way of soldiers and rock stars? Do they fade away, passing on to quiet days in front spent in front of a fireplace? Getting his face on a Marvel Comics credit card may be a long way off, but in the immediate future "the Man" is keeping busy by cranking out things like Stan Lee's Alexa Volume 1 GN. Thinking about the fantastic still plays big in the life of Stan Lee. The comic genius has a variety of artists that he's assemble for this project. So expect to see the handiwork of Dan Jurgens, Dave Gibbons, and Chris Malgrain on a story set in New York City where a pair of twenty-foot-tall giants are making their way through the streets like Godzilla. But even more shocking is that a female comic artist is responsible for opening a dimensional portal that brought the giants to the Big Apple. The kick in the pants: she doesn't know how she did it. So imagine the fun of trying to fix what you broke when there's no manual handy! Look for Stan Lee's Alexa Volume 1 GN from Ibooks in the Comics section of Previews! To Bite The Hand That Feeds You Storm Shadow has long been a deliverer of death for Cobra, but that does not mean the assassin is a single-minded stormtrooper for the terrorist organization. Behind the merciless killing strokes spins a mind bent on it's own agenda. Storm Shadow is also Tommy Arashikage-and Tommy has a conscience with dark intent. Just because you fold a hand does not mean you throw the game. The smart warrior is a patient warrior. He sees all angles. He weighs all possibilities. Storm Shadow has done the bidding of Cobra, but as we're about to learn in G.I. Joe: Master & Apprentice Volume II #1, his allegiance to Cobra's goals is totally superficial. For months, in secret, Storm Shadow has been training an apprentice. He has entrusted his knowledge to a female pupil in hopes that she will assist him in taking the fight to Cobra. Betrayal on such magnitude requires nothing less than total devotion on the part of his student. Their goal must bind them in blood. But the apprentice is tainted. Twisted. Deceitful. There is more there than meets the eye. And the sins of both their pasts may be too much to ensure a successful mission! Written by Brandon Jerwa, with art chores by Chris Stevens, Devil's Due Publishing's G.I. Joe: Master & Apprentice Volume II #1 is going to take everyone by surprise! 100 Issues for the Game Boys So what if they can't dance. They're the tabletop champions of the world. No one else is better at rolling the dice than B.A., Brian, Bob, Dave, Sara and the dastardly Black Hands. Celebrating their long, liberal reign is Knights of the Dinner Table #100 from the Kenzer folks. This centennial issue has double the number of KoDT strips! So make sure you grab three more espressos before sitting down to read about the group's latest contentions, or how Boris Alphonzo, aka HackMaster, is not ashamed of living with his mom to perfect his craft. Why should he care if he's 30-something? Gamers who have ever thought of jumping-on to KODT now have the perfect opportunity. This is the launch pad! Meet new comrades in arms with a fresh start. Ingratiate yourself to Dave Bozwell, who has paved the way for on-the-edge types that easily get bored with details, and would rather function as true-blooded Hack'n'Slashers. Or maybe you'll choose to bump elbows with Sara, who's so good at mediating she convinces sexist slash maniacs to put aside their usual identities to play female characters for a one-night square-off. Pair up with a new friend, and celebrate a comic milestone with a special double-sized issue of Knights of the Dinner Table! Look for it from Kenzer and Co. in the Comics section of Previews! Punisher & Spidey On the Job Frank Castle and Peter Parker have come to your house, with lunch pails in hand. They're both rolling up their sleeves are gearing up to exert some major elbow grease as the Frank: The Punisher Workshirt and Peter: Spider-Man Workshirt. Frank's Cardinal red shirt sports his traditional "skull" icon on the front, whereas the charcoal Spider-Man shirt has an eight-legged critter standing in to represent our favorite Wallcrawler. "Frank" and "Peter" appear on each shirt's respective name tag! Look for them in the Apparel section! Ken Kelly's Tour De Force He's the nephew of Frank Frazetta, so that should tell you something. But whether you know the family tree or not, what you can't deny is that the Ken Kelly: Escape HC is one of the most dazzling art books you'll see this year. Breathtaking brush strokes and dazzling pen-and-ink illustrations make this hardcover a gem for any bookshelf or coffee table. This tome is a visual reflection of Kelly's 30-plus years of rendering fantasy artwork. Look for it in the Previews section of Previews! Drawn and Quarterly Re-Issues Ed Ah, the 80s. Those 80s comic books. Not too many years down the road from the old underground comics. Guys like Crumb and S. Clay Wilson. One title came along in the 80s which had overtones of those underground books. It was Chester Brown's first attempt at a solo project, and he called it Ed the Happy Clown. Ed's story was humorous in that he had the head of a miniature version of Ronald Reagan affixed to his body. This perplexity has him encountering deadly pygmies, pygmy-hunters, vampires, vampire- hunters, zombies, werewolves, and mad scientists. Now the madness is re-collected in a 9 issue quarterly mini-series by Drawn & Quarterly. Look for Ed The Happy Clown #1 in the Comics section of Previews!
