Included in their list of GEMS for Young Adults is Waterwise by Joel Orff (Alternative Comics; ISBN 1-891867-82-2; DCD JUL042539) among others. Brodart Books is a leading distributor dedicated to meeting the needs of school and public libraries From Brodart: http://www.gems.brodart.com/ Welcome to the latest collection of GEMS. This is the sixth issue of Brodart's resource dedicated to the excellent works of small publishers. What is a GEM? A GEM is, simply put, a great book from and independent press that librarians wouldn't normally be exposed to. GEMS supports these voices. We think they add a certain texture to a library's collection. We think they enrich the experience of all patrons. Highlighting such books broadens libraries' choices, helping make collections richer. In this edition of GEMS you will find great new titles for Juv, YA and Adults ranging from Fiction to Non-fiction covering a wide array of subject matter. You will also find great stories on the world of the independent publishers and the authors who create so many great surprises. Read on and enjoy! Recent reviews of Waterwise: Booklist 2004-09-01 A still-young man is sketching by a lake when a voice interrupts him: 'Hey there, Jimbo.' It's Emily Goodwin, and the lake is the one her family's cabin is on. Jim has hitchhiked to it to recoup from breaking up with his girlfriend, and Emily has been living in the cabin in the wake of a divorce. When they were kids, they spent many happy times at the lake, and they try to redo a few as afternoon turns to evening, and she asks him to stay over because the cabin seems haunted. A master of black and white, and especially of white on black, Orff opens this resonant tale of friendly rather than romantic reconnection with a visual analogue to the meditational Japanese poetic form haiku; seamlessly flashes back to Jim and Emily's past; and sometimes fills present-story backdrops with surreal images sparked by their conversation--all while maintaining the warmth and languor of late summer and the wonder of old friends discovering they still cherish one another. A near-perfect gem of the graphic- novel form. ((Reviewed September 1, 2004)) lson. 128pg. AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION, c2004. Publishers Weekly 2004-08-02 The cartoonist behind Strum and Drang: Great Moments in Rock 'n' Roll, Orff favors moments that are ripe with possibility. His first book-length narrative is a slight but charming evocation of such an instance, one that's particularly sweet. Jim and Emily are childhood friends who meet again, decades later, while on the rebound from breakups; they spend a day together hanging out on a lake, remembering playing in the water when they were younger, and a night at Emily's cabin on its shore. The setup is for a romance (and Orff supplies plenty of moments where you'd expect them to fall into each other's arms or to rip off each other's clothes), but this isn't that kind of story-- it's a story about friendship and its particular intimacies, and the joys that people who've known each other forever can take in one another's company. Orff's drawings are rough, spacious and vaguely woodcut-like, savoring the odd crinkles of trees and ripples. An early scene shows Jim drawing his ex-girlfriend, adding detail with each line, and it underscores how carefully (and impressionistically) Orff observes his wobbly, scribbly characters and settings. His writing works the same way: there's no moment of revelation, and very little plot, but by book's end readers will understand the depth and dimensions of the bond between these characters. According to Superhero Hype: "We're in pre-production right now on a project called 'Battle Angel' which is something I've been working on for several years and we're just, we're finishing up the shooting draft right now. We've been designing, it's a big science fiction film and a couple things that will be interesting about this project," he says in the interview. Cameron added that "the main character, even though it's a live action film, the main character will be done with CG animation and the second thing that's interesting is we're going to be shooting it in 3D using the stereo imagining system that we've been developing for the documentaries." Kishiro has confirmed the info on his blog: Q Is it true that GUNNM (Battle Angel Alita) will be made into a movie? A It is true, I made an agreement about film adaptation of "GUNNM" with the movie director James Cameron. I can't tell you in detail I have the confidentiality agreement. It is yet to be determined by him when start making it and released on. An official announcement will be made after a decision of starting time. Often they will give up movie projects or make it for more than a decade, you could guess that the GUNNM movie will get put together as well as I could. Please pray for quick and complete making the amazing movie, and warmly watch and wait in the long term. Of course, Cameron, director of TITANIC, the first two TERMINATOR films and TRUE LIES, is legendary both for being a relentless perfectionist and being elusive about his plans. Rumors about what he's been up to since he became King of the World for TITANIC have been rife. Of course, following up the biggest box office hit of all time would give any man pause. His deep-sea documentary ALIENS OF THE DEEP opens next year. For Cameron to take on the world of Anime would be interesting indeed. And here's your mystery factoid of the day. The IMDb lists Frank Miller as the writer of an "Unnamed James Cameron Project" in 2006. The IMDb is notoriously full of hooey on stuff like this, but it's fun for armchair conspiracy theorists. +++++ From the Comics Continuum at http://www.comicscontinuum.com/: AMANO'S HERO AT SPEAKEASY Continuing its roll out of initial titles, Speakeasy Comics has announced a new title from artist Yoshitaka Amano: Hero. Here's how the book is described: "Searching for the woman whose love he has never doubted, Hero crosses history and continents. Hero needs to know the reasons why his beloved Lady begs his forgiveness, and only by following her from Parisian cemeteries, to the Las Vegas strip and to Kyoto, can he hope to discover the truth -- not only of his own love story but also of his Lady's betrayal." "Amano is such an incredibly talented creator and artist," said Adam Fortier, president of Speakeasy Comics. "I am honored beyond words that he chose Speakeasy to publish this, his first work for the American comics market since Elektra {the Redeemer for Marvel] and Sandman [The Dream Hunters for DC]." "Hero is the first project I initiated from ground zero," Amano said. "I created the basic concept and started working on it not because I was asked by somebody, but because I just wanted to do it. It is a story of a journey beyond time and space, searching for one's love and soul. I've been working on it for over 3 years now and been having great time. I hope the readers will enjoy it as the way I'm enjoying making it." Hero #1 will arrive in stores in March. It will be 96 pages and will cost $9.95. Torres and Eric Kim. Slated for a February release, the 72-page graphic novel continues the story of Joel's Korean adventure. He spends his days teaching English to a variety of age groups. His nights are spent dreaming of Hana, the school's new secretary. But will his pining pay off or would he be better off on a plane back to Canada? "In the past two or three years I've mostly worked on comics about super powered teenagers," Torres said. "I really enjoy that stuff, but I also wanted to get back to my roots. My first series Copybook Tales was a slice-of-slice comedy about growing up and finding your place in the world. I return to those themes with this, plus I explore a romantic relationship that somewhat resembles my own sometimes, er, laughable love life." "Love as a Foreign Language provides the perfect outlet for J.'s wit and heart and J. gives Eric Kim the chance to show off his impressive cartooning skills," said editor James Lucas Jones. "The pair has a special kind of chemistry and people are already sitting up and taking notice." Love as a Foreign Language is a quarterly graphic novel series. The second installment retails for $6.95 and features a color cover by Kim. "And he worked out great. He was awesome, actually." TEEN TITANS EPISODES Cartoon Network has released its schedule of Teen Titans episodes from Dec. 6-Jan. 2. Wesley Snipes posted on the Blade: Trinity boards about the possibility of playing Black Panther: "I've wanted to do the Black Panther for years now and if the fans want it, I would be honored to bring T'Challa to life. I read the post where Black Panther was the topic and I'd like to say it wouldn't be all that difficult for me to play another comic-book character. I've played many cops, dads, hustlers, FBI agents and guys running down the street and more time than not I've been able to create distinctive personalities. It would be a fabulous challenge to animate another black comic book. To make the impossible, possible and the unbelievable, believable is one of the greatest dreams an artist has." +++++ From ComiX-Fan at http://www.comixfan.com/xfan PAUL GREENGRASS TO DIRECT 'WATCHMEN' Paramount Pictures is in negotiations with British director Paul Greengrass, director of The Bourne Supremacy, to direct Watchmen, Variety reports. Lawrence Gordon and Lloyd Levin will produce the film, based on the DC Comic's series. David Hayter signed a seven-figure deal at Universal three years ago to adapt the series. Watchmen, written as a 12-part series by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, achieved cult status in the comicbook world for its adult sensibility and post-modern view of superheroes. Set in an alternate America, Watchmen follows the costumed hero Rorschach, who is living a vigilante lifestyle because most masked heroes have retired or been outlawed. While investigating a murder, he learns that a former masked-hero colleague has been killed, prompting him to begin investigating a possible conspiracy. With Greengrass aboard, the project is now eying a possible 2006 release date. Greengrass has been in demand recently after directing The Bourne Supremacy. Gordon' and Levin most recently teamed to produce Hellboy, and are both attached as producers on the Hellboy sequel. COMIX-FAN NEWS BRIEFS - NOVEMBER 22, 2004 NEWSFLASH! CHUD has revealed more of the interview conducted with producer Lauren Shuler Donner. Again, regarding Joss Whedon's announcement that he hadn't been asked to direct X-Men 3, she said that she is a huge fan of Whedon, and "nothing is certain yet." She said of the plot of X-Men 3, "It will follow the Dark Phoenix thread, with new storylines and characters." Donner addressed responses from test screenings of Constantine that have been popping up online, saying, "We hold these screenings to get feedback. The only thing is that the movie isn't done yet, so I hope people give it a chance." She also said that the online fan community is "enormously important," and that she pays a lot of attention to them. Donner also discussed the future of the X-Men film franchise. "...you have so many characters, and you have so many different stories. You could go off and do Days of the Future Past. You could do Hellfire Club. There's so much stuff you can do. ...If you can still spin a good story, like Star Trek, if you can still go and make good movies, four, five or six - fine, I'm not against it. Just as long as we're never retreading and making old news. As long as we're always being fresh and there are great stories to mine - as long as the comics go on the movies can go on." Donner also talked about the announced Wolverine spinoff, saying, "The plan is to do more of an origin story for Wolverine. ...my deepest desire is after the origin story... if that works, the second one could be the Mariko, ninja story." When asked if she would be willing to go with another actor than Hugh Jackman, she replied, "No! No! I would never go with a different Wolverine. In fact, we met, [Wolverine screenwriter David] Benioff and Hugh and I, and Benioff told him the story and Hugh loved it. Hugh's on board. Hugh knows the whole samurai story. I gave him those comics, he read those, so in the future he's onboard with those also." NEWSFLASH! Wonder Woman - The Complete 2nd Season will arrive on DVD on March 1, 2005, TVShowsOnDVD reports.
