X-MEN: THE END #6
Reviewer: Brian Wilkinson, bewilkinson@yahoo.ca
Quick Rating: Great!

The End of everything Cyclops has known...

Written by: Chris Claremont
Art by: Sean Chen
Cover by: Greg Land
Inker: Sandu Florea
Colors by: Avalon's Ian Hannin
Letters by: Dave Sharpe
Assistant Editors: Andy Schmidt & Nicole Wiley
Editor: Tom Breevort
Editor In Chief: Joe Quesada
Publisher: Dan Buckley

Wow.

There were plenty of times that the Mansion has been blown up in
its long history, but never before has the attack seemed so
brutally vicious. Though Cyclops does his best to explain in the
narration that they "never laughed about it again," the panels
where children talk about empty beds beside them and you see the
look of desperation on Rahne's face as she searches for survivors
really takes the events home.

And they hit hard. Usually the toll is perhaps an X-Man has to
use a crutch afterwards, or some building is destroyed, or Chuck
Austen creates and kills off a four armed-cook, but the toll is
instantly forgettable. The devastation may not be as visceral on
the page as Grant Morrison's leave-taking with Magneto ripping
apart the front gates, but having the attack come from Cyclops'
family makes it much more personal.

I have to admit a childish thrill at seeing all of these bad guys
arriving with a connection to one of the best good guys in the
Marvel Universe. Scott, more than any other team member, really
has a lot of black sheep in his closet and I don't know why it
never occurred to me before. After all, this whole story really
is about him when you boil it down to the essentials:

1. The return of the Phoenix. While Jean is a great character in
her own right, her return seems to be more about the impact it's
going to have on Scott, Emma, and their children. While I hate
that Scott is with Emma both now and in the regular continuity,
you can't argue that it makes for good drama.

2. Cyclops trying to bring everyone together. Is it just me, or
does he seem more distant than normal? Virtually every person he
goes to tells him they can't help, aren't interested, or seem
suspicious. Is it just because of his relationship with Emma, or
is there something deeper going on?

3. Cable. Not only the return of X-Force, the call went out to
his son to come and help. I can't imagine how creepy it is for
Cable to have a stepmother in the form of Emma Frost, but at
least Cable was on his way. What's happened to Cable is still a
mystery.

4. Sinister. With the exception of Magneto and some of the
secondary villains, the major ones seem to have a fixation on
Cyclops and his family bloodline. Here Sinister is after his ex-
wife and is intent on destroying his home.

5. Stryfe, Genesis, Madelaine Pryor. They've all come calling.
One for her ex, one for his father, and the last for his
grandfather. Despite the fact they're all revealed to be War
Skrulls, someone is playing a dangerous and deeply personal game
with Scott.

6. Havok. Allowing Carter to live outside in the creepy Crystal
Palace with his brother as a ghost I'm thinking there's a more
personal reason. Perhaps Scott is partly responsible for his
brother's death.

And there are more connections to establish as well. I don't
think it's an accident that the front cover shows a battered and
beaten Cyclops. Even though he seems as cool and confident as
ever, something has gotten him rattled. Maybe it's just a
strategy to take out the head of the X-Men, but I can't wait to
see the fallout from all this.

My only complaint with the series so far is that it seems a
direct conclusion to the events that are happening now in the
books. Perhaps if it was billed as such, it would still work. As
it is, Carter has come back (I wasn't missing him), Xavier and
Magneto are still in Genosha many years down the line, and
characters appearing in New X-Men and a few other books are all
present. It just doesn't feel like any time has elapsed.

This is further felt in the appearance of some of the characters.
Northstar seems to be the only one who has aged in any way, with
the rest looking the same as they did 15 years ago. Iceman
doesn't look any different, nor does Cyclops, Jean, Kurt and many
others. Maybe it's just because no one wants to read about a
bunch of old people, but if there are a ton of x-kids around, a
little more definition would be nice. But that's just me. Also,
you'd think that 15 years down the line more than a few would
have new costumes. X-Force looked much the same, but maybe that's
because designing new outfits for everyone in the X-Universe
would take much more time than the publishing schedule permits.

I can't deny it's a fun ride, however. Claremont and Chen are
making things look so bad that you can't imagine how they're ever
going to pull themselves out of it. With a fan boys love, I look
forward to death, life, love and a lot of meaningful moments. I
hope Claremont pulls out all the stops, raises the stakes, and
lets this book shine as brightly as any story in this universe
has ever been told.

Nothing short of that will satisfy me.

reviews!

Title: Bone (trade paperback)
Publisher: Cartoon Books
Writer: Jeff Smith
Artist: Jeff Smith
Price: $ 39.95 US, $ 54.75 Can
Comments: The adventures of three Bones in the forest is how we
start out this tale. Fone Bone, Phoney Bone and Smiley Bone they
are cute characters. The Red dragon is mysterious hiding from
humans but letting all others see him. The Rat creatures are
portrayed as dumb and they are funny to see.
Smiley Bone seems dumb but he is a delightful character who
enjoys life to the fullest. Phoney Bone is always scheming
trying to find a way to make money. Fone Bone has a crush on the
girl Thorn, he just likes to be nice and help people.
Now hat do they do for fun in this forest? Well Grandma Rose
races cows. She actually runs against the cows. The race is off
to a fast start, the Bones all end up running in it to and a
whole pack of Rat creatures join in to.These characters are well
written. You find yourself entering their world easily.
This black and white trade paperback collects all of Bone's
adventures. It is a huge 1332 pages long. It will hold your
interest from start to finish.
Grandma and the dragon have some history. It keeps getting
inferred to but never mentions exactly what it is as you read
along. Your interest in what exactly it is will definitely be
peaked.
It looks as if the forces of evil are marshaling there forces
and the forces of good are to. War is coming to the Valley and
it does arrive. Rat Creatures against Villagers and Stick
Eaters. The Rat Creatures want to release their master who will
destroy the world. The grandmother and her granddaughter along
with the Bone cousins may be the only ones who can stop it. There
journeys are filled with adventures. The Bones may not seem like
world saviours but they just might surprise you.
When they do show all the dragons underground they are a
various lot. The dragons are in all shapes and sizes.
Now Thorn finds out how to defeat the threat of the Locusts
she must touch the Crown of Horns and with the help of Phone Bone
she does. He has stood by her from the start. He is shown as the
truest of friends.
At the end the Bone cousins all head home. A happy ending.
This epic adventure is a masterful piece of writing. You will
fall in love with all the characters. This is a must have read
for any lover of fantasy and adventure at its best.

Title: Marvel Holiday Special 2004
Publisher: Marvel
Writers: Tom DeFalco, Roberts Aguirre-Sacasa
Artist: Takeshi Miyazawa
Pencilers: Roger Cruz, Duncan Rouleau
Inkers: Victor Olazaba, Aaron Sowd
Price: $ 3.99 US, $ 5.75 Can
Comments: We start off with a retelling of A Christmas Carol.
Jonah takes Scrooge's place. We find out why Jonah hates Spider-
Man and other masked people. His wife was killed by a masked
man. So after Jonah is visited by spirit he becomes a little less
stingy.
Next up an X-Men X-Mas. We see Miss Frost has a heart after
all. She shows kindness to one of her students. Above and beyond
what a teacher would.
The last story we see preparations for Christmas through
Franklin Richards eyes. Johnny is into buying presents. Sue
visits a church to pray. Ben goes to visit his old neighborhood
Yancy Street. Reed well he sees God in everything around him and
appreciates life. But the best thing they do is spend Christmas
with each other. They are surrounded by love.
The stories do capture the spirit of Christmas. The art is good
throughout. The cover is fantastic. Spidey swinging with a
Christmas background in behind.

Title: JSA: Strange Adventures # 4
Publisher: DC
Writer: Kevin J. Anderson
Penciler: Barry Kitson
Inker: Gary Erskine
Price: $ 3.50 US, $ 5.25 Can
Comments: The art is outstanding. The JSA are drawn heroic. But
Doctor Fate he is drawn as power personified as he controls the
wind and storm. The yellow and blue of his costume compliment
each other. He looks and is the JSA's most powerful member in
this series.
Lord Dynamo even with his Zeppelin, cyborgs, robots and
lightning bolts isn't really that much of a villain. He doesn't
look impressive at all.
Poor Johnny Thunderbolt has his Thunderbolt stolen. Johnny's
anguish is heartbreaking. It is well drawn and written. He feels
without it he can no longer be in the JSA. Of course he's wrong.
He is and always will be a valuable member.

Title: Adam Strange # 3
Publisher: DC
Writer: Andy Diggle
Artist: Pascal Ferry
Price: $ 2.95 US, $ 4.50 Can
Comments: The mystery and adventure in space continue. While
floating nearly dead in space a Thanagarian ship picks him up. We
see some great flying combat as Adam goes against the
Thanagarians. But he's out numbered and its there home ground.
So he is captured and brought to Thanagar. hes tried and sentenced
to death for the destruction of the planet Rann. You have to see
his face as he says "This Isn't Over". The determination on his
face should convince anyone it really isn't over. So even as you
see the headman's axe fall you know it will not land.
Sh'ri Valkyr the Thanagarian Commander who captured Adam seems
to have some respect for him. Adam certainly has earned it. He is
a husband and father willing to do whatever it takes to find his
family and get them back.

Title: JLA # 108
Publisher: DC
Writer: Kurt Busiek
Penciler: Ron Garney
Inker: Dan Green
Comments: The world of the Crime Syndicate of Amerika is not a
place you would want to live in. Ultraman, Owlman, Super Woman,
Power Ring and Johnny Quick rule it with an iron fist. But they
are tired of it since it presents no more challenges.
Than they find Qward and they have a new world to destroy. Than
time goes back and something different happens.
The story focuses on the CSA with the JLA nowhere to be found.
The CSA are a ruthless bunch. They enjoy murder, mayhem and just
plain being evil for the fun of it. Kurt Busiek knows what he is
doing as he shows us these anti-JLA thugs.
The art shows off their evil malicious nature to perfection.
Owlman we see torturing Johnny Quick just because he interfered
with Owlman killing others.

Title: Superman/Batman # 14
Publisher: DC
Writer: Jeph Loeb
Penciler: Carlos Pacheco
Inker: Jesus Merino
Price: $ 2.99 US, $ 4.50 Can
Comments: Three people go back in time to change Superman and
Batman's origins. These mysterious people travel to the origin
times of Flash, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter and Aquaman and
kill them so they will pose no threat to Superman and Batman.
Superman and Batman have become the two most powerful men in
the world. "Obey or Die" that is how they rule. You can see the
difference in the way they act and talk. They look the same but
act completely different.
The evil version of the Legion Of Super-Heroes Saturn Queen,
Lightning Lord, Cosmic King are the time travelers who are
manipulating Supes and Bats. They are a surprise to see. They
play adoptive parents well. The weird part is that Supes and Bats
don't even realize something is wrong. They know what happened
but don't realize its wrong. Its due to their upbringing.
Now seeing Uncle Sam and Wonder Woman teaming up that was
breathtaking. Uncle Sam is drawn magnificently. A new Freedom
Fighters maybe will be coming?
The comic is like an elseworld tale in many aspects except it
isn't one. It takes place in the regular DC Universe.

Title: Superman/Batman # 15
Publisher: DC
Writer: Jeph Loeb
Penciler: Carlos Pacheco
Inker: Jesus Merino
Price: $ 2.95 US, $ 4.50 Can
Comments: Uncle Sam and Wonder Woman gather up a team of Freedom
Fighters. Phantom Lady, THe Ray, Doll Man and The Human Bomb join
them. Uncle Sam now has a Green Lantern power ring. This
certainly ups his power level.
You will not believe what happens here. Batman dead at Wonder
Woman's hands. Wonder Woman dead at Superman's hands. And if that
were not enough the Kingdom Come Superman is coming back to
hopefully fix things.
Deadman's appearance was great to see. He made a nice attempt
to kill Batman but no luck. Batman was to well prepared. The
story has Batman and Superman as rules. They do not show a lot
of emotions. Until Batman's death than we see the pain and rage
in Superman's actions. The facial expressions are to plain when
they are showing his pain and rage.
The characters and the way they are used makes this story line
a thing of beauty.

Title: Batgirl # 58
Publisher: DC
Writer: Anderson Gabrych
Pencilers: Ale Garza
Inker: Jesse Delperdang
Price: $ 2.50 US, $ 3.85 Can
Comments: Batgirl has moved to Bludhaven. Her first order of
business save Robin from Shrike. She beats him pretty badly.
Batgirl's vocabulary has increased a lot. She is developing quite
the repartee. Batgirl and Robin the Dynamic Duo they are now
Bludhaven's new protectors. They work good together. The art is
great, Batgirl's muscles are shown when she fights or moves.
Robin is slightly more slim. Batgirl does blend in well with the
shadows.
It looks as if the two will be working together with the local
police. But the relationship will be a tentative one.
So the two find Blockbusters body which was stolen. Is he alive
or dead?

Title: The Gift # 9
Publisher: Image
Writer: Raven Gregory
Artist: Tyler Kirkham
Price: $ 2.99 US, $ 3.75 Can
Comments: This issue starts off with a bunch of drug addicts,
alcoholics and sex addicts. They just like to hang out and have
fun. They are the best of friends. Raven and Tyler know how to
work together to deliver a comic that the writing and art match
up perfectly to bring across what is happening.
The art shows them off beautifully. Each one you can see what
their vices are. The mysterious being that gives out these Gifts
is drawn with a flare that leaves no mistake he is in control, he
has the power. The drawing where the girl first sees him is a
powerful picture. His Gift is a joint.
Bad cops kill her friends. The joint gives her the power for
revenge. You see wisps of smoke. Its her. As she enters the cop's
leader he explodes from within outward. Its a bloody mess.
This recipient of the Gift gets to see her mysterious
benefactor one more time. When he tells her he could have stopped
the killings. Believe it or not she lets fly with a right to the
jaw. You can not just see how mad she is you can feel it.

Title: Green Lantern: Rebirth # 2
Publisher: DC
Writer: Geoff Johns
Penciler: Ethan Van Scives
Inker: Prentis Rollins
Price: $ 2.95 US, $ 4.50 Can
Comments: We take a look at how Hal Jordan's father died. It is
sad to watch as the son sees his father die before his eyes. Hal
relives that day. We get to see what kind of a man Hal is. hes a
hero just like his father was.
Guy Gardner was attacked but this issue he gets a GL ring a
duplicate made from Hal's old ring and hes back and attacking
heroes as is John Stewart and Kilowog. Something or someone is
influencing them. The story is rolling along and gaining
momentum. If a GL uses his ring they become possessed by this
evil. Only Kyle is still free, he hasn't used his ring yet. Hal
has not either since Green Arrow has his ring.
The art is fantastic, Guy, Kilowog, Kyle, Hal and all the
heroes are drawn larger than life.
The cover has Hal back in his GL costume. He belongs in it. hes
not back yet but hes on his way. It will be great having the
greatest Green Lantern back. Its about time.

Title: Space Ghost # 1
Publisher: DC
Writer: Joe Kelly
Artist: Ariel Olivetti
Price: $ 2.95 US, $ 4.50 Can
Comments: Thaddeus Bach is a good police officer. But he wants
to advance and he does. He gets promoted into The Phantoms the
elite Phantoms are called The Wraths of the Eidolon they get only
the toughest assignments.
Thaddeus is a good cop. So when he sees The Wrath are corrupt.
You and they know something will be done. They murder his wife
and unborn son and than shoot him. These guys the elite
protectors are evil. They are murders and thieves.
This issue shows us the beginnings of Space Ghost before he
ever dons the costume. He was a happy man doing his job, doing
the best he could for his family. This story is about an ordinary
guy just doing the right thing.
The colors are splendid. The drawings show us that Thaddeus is
well muscled. The aliens look various. They took some thought to
come up with.

Title: The Darkness vol. 2 # 17
Publisher: Top Cow
Writer: David Lapham
Artist: Brian Denham
Price: $ 2.99 US, $ 4.60 Can
Comments: Dale Keon delivers to us a cover that will leave you
wondering what the Hell is that thing. A little demon playing
poker and does he ever look wicked. That is one evil looking
demon.
Jackie Estacado is one messed up guy. With all those demons
inside him who wouldn't be. His pain and suffering are well
portrayed through the writing and drawing. These little demons
are really doing a number on him. They want their way and if they
don't get it they will punish him.
Jackie is definitely not a super-hero hes an anti-hero. He can
be evil and mean and he will kill. At times when you see him your
thinking hes not such a bad guy than he will do something to show
you hes much worse than you thought.
Jackie tries hard to control the demons inside him. But he
doesn't always succeed. Their evil comes through so much you will
be afraid to turn out the lights.
The art is beautifully done. The girls are sexy with all the
curves in just the right places. The demons are drawn so you can
feel the evil coming off of them. Jackie looks like a poor lost
soul. He just doesn't know what to do about the demons.
The preview of "Hunter Killer" is awesome as one assassin takes
on another assassin. The fight is fast and furious but ultimately
no contest. The art shows off both assassins and their different
styles wonderfully.

SPOILER WARNING:
THE FOLLOWING COLUMN MAY REVEAL SIGNIFICANT PORTIONS OF THE PLOTS
OF SOME COMIC BOOKS, OR THE ENTIRE STORY. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Name: Vampirella Magazine #8
Publisher: Harris Publications

Comments:  There is so much information in your magazine; I don't
know where to begin.  Let's start from the beginning with "Kick
Start my Heart".  Wow!  This was a very unusual story, as
Vampirella will do anything and everything to be with her one
true love.  A man/monster behind a guarded fortress and
Vampirella must fight her way through these sentries to be with a
Frankenstein type of monster.  But, the question is..was that
Frankenstein?  Brian Wood definitely got my attention with that
story!  Major kudos to Joshua Dysart.  Joshua did an excellent
job with the serial killer story known as Violent Messiahs.  I
was a great fan of this story that involved not just one serial
killer, but 2 serial killers.  Now Joshua will take on the reins
of Swamp Thing.  If Swamp Thing falls into the mold of Violent
Messiahs, then the reader will see Swamp Thing in a whole new
light.or should I say.a whole new darkness?  What is this?  The
Wachowski Brothers will produce their own comic books?  Most
incredible!  The Wachowski Brothers, who are incredibly famous
for their Matrix movie trilogy, will now have their own comic
book company called Burlyman Enterprises!  Your article on
Burlyman Enterprises has me sold in getting their new line of
comics.  Doc Frankenstein, Shaolin Cowboy and the Matrix comics
sound adventurous and fun!  Editor Spencer Lamm brought back some
memories as it was mentioned that he once worked on the
Barkerverse line of comics.  I remember Ecto Kid well and wish
that the Barkerverse comics would make a comeback.  Lots of great
stuff to read and enjoyed the information on author Christopher
Moore and the fantastic reviews in New Blood.  Vampirella has a
good taste for independent comics!  I sat there with my jaw agape
reading Vampirella/Ronnie Van Helsing in Witness!  What a strange
world where Freddie 'the Tooth' Fries is not only a vampire, but
also a government-protected witness!  Then there are vampires who
are part of the Bathory Organization, that take their name from
Lady Bathory who was known to bathe in virgin's blood to maintain
and keep her youth.  There was extreme action in this story and I
loved every bit of it!  Aimee Brooks is an absolutely gorgeous
actress and I look forward to seeing her in the new DVD Monster
Man!  Excellent read like always!

MOE Sidenote:  As I entered the A1 Comics Stargate, this is the
realities that I encountered:  Karas #1 by Dark Horse Comics;
Brian Pulido's War Angel by Avatar; Adventures in the Rifle
Brigade by Vertigo; Angel Town by Vertigo; The Blade of Kumori #2
by Aftermath; Bloodhound by DC Comics; Ezra #3 by Arcana; Full
Front Nerdity #1 by Dork Storm; MegaCity 909 #4 by DDP; Samurai
#1 by Dark Horse Comics; Wild Girl #2 by Wildstorm.  And make
sure to check out the new issue of Heavy Metal, the Jan 2005
edition, you will be amazed at the artwork!  Check them out at
www.heavymetal.com   This evening I went to see Blade: Trinity
and I heard a few negative comments on this movie.  I found
nothing negative about the movie, it was high paced, filled with
action and Wesley Snipes did a great job with the character of
Blade!  I love the character of Whister's daughter, she extracted
justice against the vampires that left me hollering for more!  I
really hope they do a Nightstalkers spin-off, they did great
working as a team with Blade as he went against the number one
vampire known to the world as Dracula.  I also saw The
Incredibles and Finding Neverland.  Fun movies, but I still like
Blade: Trinity better!   Now below are a few comics that I did
manage to purchase and a few comments I made to the editors:

Marvel Knights #4 by Marvel Comics:
That is one of the things I love about Marvel Comics.  When a
reality is described within the story, there is a top-notch
artist that will make that reality come to life.  I found that in
Marvel Knights #4, in which Transia in Eastern Europe is being
described and the beauty of this land was depicted with superb
excellence within these pages.  I was awestruck at the beauty of
the mountainous terrain of Wundagore.  When you have a
descriptive story being told with great artwork to go with it, it
is easy for the reader to escape in the pages of this comic
book.  Enjoyed the way that the FF was hamming it up for the
crowds and media.  The crowds love the FF and I believe they can
draw a bigger fan based crowd than Justine Timberlake and Britney
Spears.  It was great to see Daredevil in this story too!  Marvel
Knights #4 is an attention getter and now I look forward to the
next installment!

BPRD #2 by Dark Horse Comics:
Mix up a solution with the madness of the Twilight Zone, the
investigative techniques of CSI and strange encounters that can
be found on the X-Files and you have the BPRD!  BPRD #2 was a
step into the bizarre!  I couldn't help but feel sorry for Roger,
he was really being picked on in this issue and he seemed
unfaltered by the barbs that he was made up of horse manure and
blood.   Roger walking on the street would seem to have a odd
package for a man, but of course we're talking about poor old
Roger.  I kind of enjoy the drama within the ranks of the BPRD.
No office works in total harmony and BPRD is no exception, there
are quarrels, but when it comes down to the nitty gritty, the
team works perfectly together in accomplishing the task at hand.
Out of all the comic books I have read, I must admit that Johann
is the weirdest character I have yet to encounter.  In the X-
Files, Mulder and Scully in one episode dealt with raining frogs,
but with the BPRD, they are dealing with terrifying frog
creatures!  You can't get any better than that!

G-Man:
G-Man brought home some childhood memories to me.  The baby
boomer generation of kids played cops and robbers, cowboy and
indians and of course superheroes.  G-Man desires to be a
superhero and imagines himself having all kinds of powers from
flying to levitation. When I was a kid, I wore a towel around my
neck and pretended to be Batman.  When one day a bully of the
school grabbed the end of my towel and swung me around and around
and finally released me, in which I tumbled and scrapped my
knees, I knew my days of playing superhero was over.  I look at
the kids of today and instead of playing superheroes, they
imitate their favorite wrestler and we now see back yard
wrestling popping up all over.  This comic book was a fantastic
read and it was funny to see G-Man on the roof and after being
told over and over to get off the roof, his mind set is that he is
a superhero.  Seeing G-Man playing with his superhero dressed
buddies was hilarious and I love the artwork and the stand out
colors in this comic book!  This comic book has fun written all
over it!  Keep up the good work!
