for Previews' "The Splash Page" which is our source material

Star Wars Gala at Dark Horse

The circle is now complete...in many ways. Not only is the final
Star Wars movie about to hit the theaters this Spring, but Dark
Horse is set to release the Star Wars: Episode III-Revenge of the
Sith TPB. And this is just for starters.

For those of you who may not have been paying attention, this is
the last Star Wars flick to be released that will complete George
Lucas' saga. It's going to be big, and that's why Dark Horse
picked the creative team of Miles Lane and Doug Wheatley to do
the comics adaptation. They wanted some big guns to handle the
story that sets things up for the groundbreaking predecessor, A
New Hope. So naturally, a big focus of Revenge of the Sith will
involve the lightsaber showdown between Obi-wan and Anakin. Lane
and Wheatley will peel off the layers of the onion to show how
Anakin succumbs to the dark side. How it makes him come to hate
Obi-Wan. You'll be turning pages frantically to learn the fate of
Padm??? Amidala. You'll sweat profusely as heroes turn into
martyrs. And you'll cheer for a villain as he makes his long-
awaited return!

While the Star Wars: Episode III-Revenge of the Sith TP is an
epic graphic novel not to be missed, neither is the Star Wars:
Visionaries TP. If you want to go beyond the Lucas saga, and see
what other maelstroms can occur in the Star Wars universe, we
think you'll be interested in the wildly gifted minds of the
Lucasfilm art department and visual effects powerhouse Industrial
Light & Magic. The other men behind the Star Wars magic have come
together to tell their own Star Wars tales in a compilation of
short stories. Each creator has been given free reign to play
with the galaxy far, far away. So don't miss the opportunity to
grab up a copy of Visionaries, which marks the first time a group
of Star Wars movie concept artists and designers have cooked up
comics stories!

But while Visionaries offers up the newcomers to comics, Star
Wars: General Grievous #1 is a 4-issue mini-series concocted by
comics veterans. The old war horse himself, Chuck Dixon, pounded
out a script that was further embellished by artists Rick
Leonardi and Mark Pennington. They bring us a tale about a leader
of the Separatist army. General Grievous is being hunted by
Padawan Flynn Kybo and his master T'chooka D'oon. But after
Grievous kills T'chooka D'oon, Flynn Kybo decides to take matters
into his own hands despite contradicting orders from the Jedi
Council!

Look for Star Wars: General Grievous, along with Star Wars:
Visionaries TPB and Star Wars: Episode III-Revenge of the Sith TP
in the Dark Horse section. And don't forget to see page 16 of
Previews for more Star Wars: Episode III and Star Wars trilogy
merchandise!

SpeakEasy Debuts New Amano Book

He can't remember a time when he wasn't drawing. Talented artist
Yoshitaka Amano had a desire to put paper to pencil long before
he was a teenager. But by the age of 15, his family helped him
move to a company dormitory for the animation studio Tatsunoko
Productions. And after only a year of training, Amano was helping
to design characters for many of Tatsunoko's cartoons, including
Gatchaman (released in the U.S. as G-Force and Battle of the
Planets). His later artistic success won him a spot doing concept
illustrations for videogames like Final Fantasy. But Amano's
creative spirit went beyond games and animation, and he was soon
doing various projects that eventually led him to drawing comics,
which included work on Elektra/Wolverine: The Redeeemer and
Sandman: Dream Hunters.

Now the artist has once again turned his attention towards
comics, but this time he's not hanging out with the big boys.
He's joining up with new publisher Speakeasy Comics to put out
Yoshitaka Amano's Hero Volume 1 GN.

This new graphic novel promises to show why one of the most
acclaimed and award-winning artists of his time can't stay away
from the fan-favorite four-color medium. In Hero, we get Amano's
heart and soul poured into a story that's bound to appeal to
comics fans, fiction readers, and manga enthusiasts. It is a tale
of one man searching for the woman whose love he has never
doubted. And that's what makes her betrayal so devastating!

World Class Writer Launches New Iron Man

Re-imagining characters is not a new thing. Creators have been
doing it since we can remember. But how well the new
interpretation sits with fans is a completely different matter.
We've seen many fans get their feathers ruffled when the makeover
wasn't what they expected.

Such was not the case when Mark Millar gave us The Ultimates in
2002. Aside from the man-eating Hulk, neurotic Giant Man, and
gung-ho Captain America, Millar gave us a great twist on why
millionaire Tony Stark would want to be Iron-Man: Tony doesn't
have a terminal heart condition - he has an inoperable brain
tumor. Ho! Even more tragic are the circumstances facing the
Ultimate Iron Man. How could you possibly top such a blow to the
noggin?

Bring from behind the curtains world-class writer Orson Scott
Card to launch a six-issue Ultimate Iron Man mini-series!

Those of you who aren't familiar with Orson Scott Card work will
be quite impressed with the writer's resume. His credentials
include being a World Fantasy Award winner, a four-time Hugo
award winner, and a two-time Nebula award winner. Want even more
sugar on top? Expect dynamite art on this mini-series from none
other than industry legend Andy Kubert!

Look for Ultimate Iron Man #1 in the upcoming Marvel Previews!

Wizard's Art Tips Collected

For over 14 years, Wizard has been setting aside interior pages
to help young artists practice their craft. Yes, for those of you
who haven't noticed, besides the price guide and editorials there
have been pages in Wizard: The Comics Magazine that have helped
many artists get past some roadblocks. Since the magazine's
inception, readers have been treated to hot artists in the field
that offer their input and sketches to showcase their tricks of
the trade, and tips for illustration.

For those of us who can't draw stickmen, hey, this feature has
been neat because we got to see some sketches from dudes on books
we recognize on the comic rack.

But for those of us who walk around with sketch pads, this is the
stuff that takes precedent over the price guide and editorials.

Well, the time came when somebody realized there was ample
material to warrant a training manual. So the Gareb Shamus and
company have announced the coming of The Wizard Best Of Basic
Training TP.

The first thing that catches your eye is the cover. Cheesecake
maestro and monkey boy Frank Cho got dibs on rendering the cover
image, and he's done a bang-up job (like always). But moving past
the cover, you start to get into the best and most instructional
"how to draw" lessons from Wizard's 14-year history.

The guts of the book are the names behind the pencils. Expect the
biggest names in comics to give you the lowdown in this 256-page
monster. Artists who'll be giving you the skinny include Jim Lee,
Michael Turner, George P???rez, Joe Kubert, Adam Hughes, Greg Land,
Frank Cho, Joe Linsner, Greg Horn, Walt Simonson, Doug Mahnke,
Darick Robertson, Gary Frank, Sean Chen, Dale Keown, Bart Sears,
Pat Lee, Art Adams, Jim Califiore, Phil Jimenez, Matt Haley, Tom
Raney, Kevin Maguire and many, many more!

Beyond the big boys who'll be doing the narrating, you can expect
lessons titled "How To Draw From Photo Reference," "Evolution of
a Page," "Storytelling Fundamentals," "How To Draw From
Reference, Perspective, Movement & Motion," "Sex Appeal," "How To
Draw Characters," "Inking, Action Scenes," "Using Negative Space,
How To Tell a Story," "Facial Expressions," "Block & Cube
Construction," "How To Draw A Cover," "Anatomy 101,"
"Silhouettes," "Sultry Women," "Dynamic Foreshortening," "Group
Shots," "How To Shade," "Body Language" and more!

And what's the cherry on top? A practice script from Brian
Michael Bendis!

section of Previews!

Wanted Slated for HC

Mark Millar has been in the game of writing comics for a long
time. Few may remember his wicked run on DC's Swamp Thing in the
90s (his name wasn't prominent in U.S. comics at the time).
Plenty of people know him from his work on The Authority after
Warren Ellis left the title. And everyone came to know him on a
name basis once he came out with Marvel's The Ultimates.

But since the release of his Wanted mini-series, Millar's the hot
name to look for in comics. The man has given new meaning to the
old expression "bring on the bad guys!"

Cinematic in approach, with characters resembling celebrities,
it's no wonder that Wanted is now being kicked around for a film
deal in Hollywood.

Bright lights and big city, no? If you read Wanted, you would
know why it's on the fast track for the silver screen. The book
is simply the most violent evil thing that Millar has ever
written. It's safe to say that the book was an instant classic.
So Image Comics has given it the red carpet treatment by
announcing that the Wanted HC will be coming soon to a comic shop
near you.

If you're looking for a supervillains book about sex, money,
powers, and costumes, then the Wanted HC will be your bible.
Featuring incredible artwork from J.G. Jones, with coloring by
Paul Mounts, Wanted shows what happens when absolute power
corrupts Wesley Gibson, who inherits assassination powers from a
father he believes has been murdered. Collecting the entire
series of Wanted #1-#6, the hardcover edition also features the
informational Wanted Dossier, showcasing artists such as Frank
Quitely, Joe Quesada, and John Romita Jr.!

Look for the Wanted HC from Image Comics in the Premiere section
of Previews!

Krause Offers Hobby Exclusive Covers

Starting in January, Krause publications offers variant covers
for Comics Buyer's Guide and Scrye exclusive to the hobby/direct
market. Such a dual-presence in stores marks the increased
readership that has sprung up for both periodicals, and how their
appeal has reached mainstream audiences as well as those who
visit hobby shops.

"We've wanted to do this for quite some time," said Comics
Buyer's Guide publisher Mark Williams. "An exclusive comic-book
art cover, drawn by some of the hottest new artists in the
industry? It will be a huge draw for Comics Buyer's Guide
readers, old and new."

And how will these new covers deliver their impact? Comics
Buyer's Guide will still be on top of comic-book pop culture -
past, present, and future - but now each new issue of will
feature both a comic-book pop culture cover for the mass market,
and a comic-book art cover to be sold exclusively through the
hobby trade.

Get in on the ground floor of this new publishing trend with
issue #1604 of the CBG, which leads with the 24th annual Comics
Buyer's Guide Fan Awards, then goes on to announces the winners
of CBG's Jim Lee contest from issue #1601.

But the change in plans was not only for Krause's CBG. Krause's
Scrye magazine will also get the dual-cover treatment, starting
with issue #83. Mark Williams commented that such a decision was
also warranted as "hobby retailers have always been left behind,
with other companies making special offers only for mass market
chain stores, mega-marts, and book stores. I am proud to say that
we are able to give our hobby market retail partners their own
exclusive."

So good news, game fans! More and more people are realizing your
hobby is the bomb! But you've known all along you had your thumb
on the heartbeat, especially being a Scrye reader, because the
long-running Scrye gives the lowdown on collectible card games
and collectible miniatures games. And Scrye has the only complete
monthly price guide for Magic: The Gathering, as well as
extensive pricing coverage of the most popular collectible card
games!

Look for both the re-vamped CBG and Scrye magazines from Krause
Publications in the Magazines section of Previews!

DF Helps Dawn Turn 15

Dynamic Forces has a long history of showcasing Dawn. And why
not? The red-haired goddess appeal is timeless. A buxom gal who'd
never have a problem getting a date on Friday night! But what
makes Dawn such a hit at the conventions is that she appeals to
women as much as men. Joseph Michael Linsner created a character
that's enduring to both genders. And to celebrate the queen's
long reign over fanboys and fangals is the DF Dawn 15th
Anniversary Trading Cards.

The fanfare over this latest goodie is not just the fact that
Dawn's been on the circuit for 15 years (a feat not easily
duplicated in the creator-owned scene), but the 72 base card
series that's coming your way has lots of fireworks to keep you
dazzled.

At the root of the excitement is, of course, new illustrations.
We're always hungry to see what new pinups Joe's got under his
sleeve, and this time we'll be treated to at least nine brand new
images fully painted by the artist, and created exclusively for
this series!

New drawings would be enough for some folks, but Dynamic Forces
keeps the heat high by giving you two Glow-In-The-Dark cards in
every box (6 in total), one ultra-rare Acetate "cel" card per box
(6 Chase Cel cards in total), and two signed cards in every box.
All cards are autographed by the man himself, Joseph Michael
Linsner.

All you need to bring is your own birthday hat. Dynamic Forces
covers the cake and ice cream. Because just when you think you've
heard enough to sign the dotted line, more extras are cooked up.
Things like hand-drawn sketch cards! But to really sweeten the
jackpot, you get redemption cards to receive First Print "File
Copies" of early, rare Dawn comics from Linsner's personal files
and collection! Each of these special redemption "chase" cards
will be hand-signed by Linsner, and numbered with a Certificate
of Authenticity, stating that they're signed file copies!

Look for the DF Dawn 15th Anniversary Trading Cards from Dynamic
Forces in the Comics section of Previews!

Palmiotti Puts A Spin on the Western

Yee-haw! Just what we need in this age of complacency. We need a
new spin on the old West. We need action shot in a new vein that
leaves dust in our mouth. Our hair in tangles! Sweat on our
forehead!

Jimmy Palmiotti has always been up to the challenge. His
imagination has never been in short supply. Marvel Knights
attested to that. But Palmiotti has sought to create chaos in a
new environment. He's planted some roots at Black Bull
Entertainment, and come up with a unique title that he's put
together with painter Phil Noto.

The New West #1 is a quirky sort of spin on old Western-type
adventures. The cowboy in the story is a fella who goes by the
name of Daniel Wise. The disgraced former Los Angeles Police
detective could have taken the Dean Martin route, and curled up
next to a bottle for his sorrows. He could be dipping into
spittoons for tossed nickels he needs for whiskey. But instead,
Wise takes the hero route when he finds out that a kidnapped city
mayor has no hope for escape.

But while the story may sound familiar, you wouldn't expect a
former L.A. lawman to go charging into danger with only a horse
and broadsword.

Yet that's exactly what happens!

Look for The New West #1 from Black Bull Entertainment in the
Wizard section of Previews!

Wizard Tugs on the Grapevine

One of the things you have to love most about Wizard: The Comics
Magazine is their ears to the ground. They seem to catch the buzz
words as soon as they're starting around the water cooler. And
this habit of staying on top of the grapevine has earned them
much recognition from fans, who are always eager to know what
dire fates are ahead for their characters, or which creative
teams sound like a good reason to expand their reading list.
With Wizard: The Comics Magazine #162 soon to hit the stands,
you'll find there's no shortage of news and rumors buzzing
around. What dire consequences are in store for Superman now that
Frank Quitely and Grant Morrison are slated to be the creative
team? Will you learn enough from the exclusive Wizard Q&A
interview?

Need cutting-edge dirt on the extremes for the comic form? The
payoff is in a feature on Alex Ross, whose controversial works
now includes a shocking President George Bush cover to the
Village Voice! Behold the mauled statue of Liberty!
Behold an amazing gallery of these extreme pieces with personal
explanations and commentary by Ross.

And who can resist Good Girl art in modern comics by Frank Cho,
Adam Hughes, Greg Horn, Terry Dodson and Mike Mayhew?

Is it too much fun in one magazine? No! It's the contents you can
look for in Wizard: The Comics Magazine #162!

Comic Strips Teach Japanese

Innovative teaching is that which operates outside of the box.
When you want to teach effectively, you incorporate the senses.
This stimulates greater brain activity, and thus, awareness to
the lesson being taught. In subscribing to such protocol, one
should be checking out the Manga University Presents: Kanji De
Manga Volume 2 SC. If it's kanji you need to learn, this book
facilitates better learning through the ultimate visual
expression: comic strips.

It's a common practice used by experience teachers to take visual
and audio aids and incorporate them into a lesson when students
have problems with comprehension. This book functions on such
rationale by using cartoon strips to help illustrate learning
kanji. With the aid of a kanji pronunciation guide, notes on
stroke order, and English explanations, the comic strips are
concrete visual examples for comprehending the Japanese language.

Learning can be fun with this book, which introduces 80 kanji
that all Japanese schoolchildren are required to learn by the
time they graduate from sixth grade. A great motivating tool for
students, the Kanji De Manga Volume 2 SC can be found in the
International section of Previews.

Great Expectations for Kung-Fu Kid!

Don't look for no Hong Kong Phooey here, kids. Yeah, Kakoong may
have a feline companion (a saber-toothed tiger to be exact), But
he is not some incompetent hero who is seemingly unaware that
it's the cat who saves the day as Mr. Kung Fu guy finds himself
tied up in his own traps!

Kung-Fu Jungle Boy Volume 1 GN - a hilarious spoof of Dragonball
- is all about straight-up kick-fighting that sends spittle
flying from crunched jaw bones. The reason for flying feet is a
bunch of unwary visitors awaken an evil King who's been trapped
deep in the center of the island. With his escape, all hell
breaks loose. And it's up to Kakoong and his friends to save the
day. But would you expect those friends to be a flying dog, a
monkey with one eye, and a saber-toothed tiger? No. And that's
where the story just starts getting interesting!

Look for Kung-Fu Jungle Boy Volume 1 GN from CPM Manga in the
Comics section of Previews!

The Underground Godfather's Handbook
Robert Crumb started the underground comic book movement.
From names like S. Clay Wilson and Robert Williams, it is
Crumb who is seen as the Godfather of the undergrounds. Now
in The R. Crumb Handbook HC W/CD, readers can trace his
development as a cartoonist, and examine his legacy with
over 400 pages of cartoons and photographs, 80 personal

Learning Manga from the Masters

If you want to learn how to draw manga, then you want to learn
from the experts. And you want concrete examples to work from
while reading. Templates, basically. You want tried-and-true
building blocks that'll put you on the right path to drawing
mangal that looks polished. Thus, you're looking for something
like the English language edition of How to Draw Manga: Ultimate
Manga Lessons Volume 1 SC from Graphic-Sha! This compact manga-
size book most importantly begins with copying professional
artists' work to the point where the beginning artist is able to
produce his or her own original manga. Look for it in the
International section of Previews!

Death Plays For Keeps

A petty king who thinks that his reign cannot be challenged by
anything living or inanimate tips the scales of fair play when he
discovers the Goddess of Destruction. Like a simpleton with a
crown too big for his head, he resurrects the Goddess and lays
waste to his kingdom. But like the genie in the bottle, the
Goddess is forced to return to a deep, dark place once the job is
done. Enter a samurai who comes across the box where the Goddess
is imprisoned. Is the allure of death so inviting that yet
another man will forgo his better judgment, and lay his life on
the line? You bet! Look for Death Trance Volume 1 GN from Anime
Works in the Comics section of Previews!

Retro G.I. Joe in Black & White

A black and white graphic novel for all ages, G.I. Joe:
Arashikage Showdown GN is loosely based on classic G.I. Joe
continuity. So if you'll allow for a little poetic license,
you'll be surprised how much fun you'll have with this story
featuring Snake-Eyes, Jinx, and Storm Shadow. Once, these three
were the glue that held together The Arashikage Ninja Clan. But
they may not be able to save the clan as unseen forces of evil
seek to steal the relic of great power that's been guarded by the
Arashikage for centuries! And damage will be done! Look for it
from Devil's Due Publishing in the Comics section of Previews!

Neil Gaiman Sprinkles the Goodies
