I welcome this diversion from my normal reading as an opportunity to present yet another facet of the comic industry to our readers. If you have no interest in explicit sexual comics then just skip this review. I have found that this company is top notch for production values and presentation, as are the works they publish. Judgment of the value of the content is a personal call, probably more so than other genre of comics. This collected series is the story of two college students, Tatsuya and Maria who felt they were meant for each other at an early age. She moved away and they vowed to stay faithful until they could be together again. That time is now and they consummate their relationship with enthusiasm. Later in the book he gets involved with one girl after the other, none of them knowing about the antics with the others. It is a male fantasy story were any number of stunning females, extremely well endowed, perhaps too much so, just want to lose their virginity to this one guy. It is not a deep story. Indeed, most of the pages are taken up with the various sex acts in long drawn out fashion. That is the style of this author - very busty females having sex in all manners with the juices flowing all over. Except for the out of proportion females, the art is terrific. What I mean is, they girls are not impossibly top heavy, but there are so many of them that it is a bit unrealistic. However, the art is strong and is done in the traditional style reading back to front, right to left. For the fan of this genre it is a notch above some of the others that take it a bit beyond believable. The people are believable and the events that put them together flow well along the course of the book. If you are into it, this is one you should seek out. MEMORIES OF PARADISE 48 pages, black & white, color covers, $4.99/$6.29 by Gary Kato Rorschach Entertainment www.rorschachentertainment.com info@rorschachentertainment.com Some time in the distant future, interplanetary archaeologist Anna Reuelen comes across a painting that captures her in a spiritual way she cannot explain. She is a spiritual person herself, a Sister of the church, and she becomes driven to find the artist. Her quest on Earth leads her to his last dwelling where she learns he has gone off planet to a barren world used only as a refueling point for interstellar trade. She takes time off from her latest dig and is soon on her way to the planet ironically named Paradise. With the help of friends she makes locally she finds David Jacobs lives alone in a remote place. She also learns that this planet is going through something mysterious as green lights stream across the night sky and she and others feel a strange presence. Soon she if off to find David and arriving in a hover car finds his house surrounded by a recent crater, as if to isolate him in the building. She and her friend rush in to find him nearly unconscious but that changes as he awakes with a start. The story deepens to tales of his painting and how he is driven to do them. He reveals the presence of "the others" on the planet and at night the return of the presence they feel even stronger. They are protected from dire consequences by a glowing globe he found but the presence gets stronger each time. The quest for a solution and the eventual solving of the mystery is the driving force in the plot. Kato has done work for ELFQUEST BEDTIME STORIES, DESTROYER DUCK, and THUNDER-BUNNY among others. His art is clean and detailed. The plotting of the story is laid out well as we are drawn into the quest and the reasons behind what is going on. Both the artist and the sister hold keys to unlocking a bright future for themselves and the planet, if they survive. It is a satisfying story, well worth you time. GRAVEDIGGER: THE SCAVENGERS 32 pages, black & white, color cover, $3.50/$5.25CAN Script, tones, letters - Christopher Mills Pencil & ink - Rick Burchett Cover art - A: Rick Burchett B: Fred Harper Fonts - Nate Piekos, Blambot Rorschach Entertainment www.rorschachentertainment.com This one-shot is another fine entry from this young company and for me the most entertaining offer to date. It is set in the real world and involves criminals planning one big score and double crosses galore. The main character is out of prison only six weeks and is going to hook up with a contact for that one score that will allow him to retire from the business for good. He has been recruited to be the brains of the plan with six others; which include his contact, Red and his girl, a big guy for muscle, a kid good with guns and a pilot. The idea is to bushwhack an illegal weapons deal in the dessert taking both the money and guns and then flying the guns to a dealer to cash in on them as well. What Digger soon finds out is that his friend Red is abusive of his girl and she wants Digger to double cross Red and run away with her and the money. He doesn't trust her but plays along, since he wants it all for himself anyway. He sets up the plan so that after the ambush he, Red, and the dame will take the money and the others fly off to sell the arms and rendezvous later to split everything. Pretty soon it is just Digger and the girl who figure to split with the money and just let the others have the proceeds from the sale of the weapons. That's when things begin to get interesting! This is a well-written, well-drawn story. The protagonist is one we feel attracted to even though he is ruthless for his own gains. The others are just as bad but not as compelling. Digger has a plan and we want him to succeed. Mills throws in enough conflict and twists that the outcome is never certain and indeed we are left wondering if anything will come next. The layout is done in landscape rather than the normal portrait orientation.
