Sony slinging 'Spidey 2' in 4K resolution

 By Sheigh Crabtree
For the first time, an entire feature film will be projected
digitally in 4K resolution when Sony Electronics debuts its next
generation digital projector with a screening of "Spider-Man 2."

Set to take place Jan. 13 at the Hollywood Pacific Theater, the
ground-breaking d-cinema exhibition offers two different
divisions of Sony -- Sony Electronics and Sony Pictures Digital,
along with its Sony Pictures Imageworks and sound mixing units --
the opportunity to come together to display their most advanced
technologies. Fortuitously, the screening also will permit Sony
to show off a pristine digital print of "Spider-Man 2" to an
important cross-section of industry cognoscente in the midst of
awards season.

Sony's first full-length 4K d-cinema display will be preceded by
a behind-the-scenes presentation and panel discussion on "Spider-
Man 2's" sound design, editing and visual effects work at the
industry screening hosted by the Entertainment Technology
Center's Digital Cinema Lab.

"Not only is Sony showcasing advances in digital projection,"
said Andrew Stucker, general manager of digital production
systems at Sony Electronics, "but we're also highlighting the
technology and the tools Sony has developed that support the
artist and the art of filmmaking."

To that end, members of industry groups interested in d-cinema --
such as the DGA, the American Society of Cinematographers, the
Motion Picture Editors Guild, the Motion Picture Sound Editors
and the Visual Effects Society -- are expected to be invited to
the screening, Stucker said.

"We were very excited by the possibility of doing this," said Don
Levy, senior vp marketing and communications at Sony Pictures
Entertainment. "We see it as an opportunity to expose the film
and the projector to a wider industry audience and create
excitement around seeing an exciting movie."

Although the timing could benefit "Spider-Man's" awards hopes,
Sony execs insisted that the demonstration, which requires
different parts of the company to work together closely, is not
just an awards season gambit but came about organically.

"Even going back 10 years there's always been a desire from a top
corporate level for the companies to find common ground," Stucker
said. "But it's never been a forced issue by any stretch. We're
in independent business groups, but if we can find opportunities
for our objectives to align, then by all means it is encouraged
and taken up by smart people like Don Levy."

Levy said that the timing was predicated on the availability of
the projector as well as having an original 4K master of "Spider-
Man 2."

Sony's 4K projector debuted in June at ETC and was taken back to
the lab because of issues of shading and color uniformity (HR
6/8). Execs had planned to show the tweaked projector again this
month or early in the new year.

The new d-cinema projector displays 4K (4096 x 2160) resolution,
and "Spider-Man 2" is one of the first films mastered at 4K
resolution, execs said. As a result, the screening will be the
first to demonstrate a closed-loop of 4K digital technology from
master to display.

Although the visual effects in "Spider-Man 2" were created in 2K
resolution, as is standard for most visual effects shots, execs
said that the resolution of the shots was increased to 4K during
the digital intermediate mastering process at eFilm.

"All the original camera negative was scanned to 4K," said Al
Barton, vp digital cinema technology at Sony Pictures
Entertainment. He said that about 43% of the film is
unadulterated 4K camera negative, which does not contain visual
effects shots.

The "Spider-Man 2" d-cinema master is 9.6 terabytes, pulled from
a working total of 40-50 TBs of footage created during the
filmmaking process. The film will be projected uncompressed from
a master server -- in this case, the Silicon Graphics Onyx
advanced visualization and SGI InfiniteStorage RM660 storage
systems.

"We don't have the time to compress to the (DCI-compliant)
JPEG2000 specification," Barton said. "For our next tests we will
be looking at hours and hours of pictures compressed and
uncompressed. Our main focus is showing that we have a digital
system in place that has the ability to show better than a 35mm
answer print."

WHAT'S NEXT FOR MARVEL? THE HOUSE OF IDEAS FOCUSES ON THE NEW
GENERATION OF HEROES WITH 'MARVEL NEXT'!

For Marvel Comics the next few chilly months will be heated up
by eight hot new additions to the Marvel Universe.

Some of the first titles launching with the Marvel Next moniker
will include YOUNG AVENGERS, X-23, ARANA, LIVEWIRES, RUNAWAYS,
and SPELLBINDERS.

Marvel Next will be zeroing in on the heroes of the next
generation. Not a new line or imprint, Marvel Next is a
collection of titles that will spotlight young characters in
fresh and exciting ways. "We recognized that the ideas that make
up these characters are really wonderful," says Editor-In-Chief
Joe Quesada. "We wanted to give them a unique and powerful
focus, showing everyone that these characters and their stories
are all about today's youth and, of course, the future. This is a
new breed of heroes."

Marvel Publisher Dan Buckley is adamant in pointing out that with
Marvel Next, fans will still find themselves in the good ol'
Marvel Universe. "Its not a separate universe," he said. "Marvel
Next is a way for us to promote these teen focused stories to
their core readership. When you see the Next tag, you'll know
you're getting some solid teenage hero adventures."

The series that may well be considered the flagship Marvel Next
book, as well as garnering a great deal of interest since it was
announced, is YOUNG AVENGERS. "We believe the Young Avengers
characters could each carry a book by themselves. They're that
cool!" Quesada remarks. "I think YOUNG AVENGERS is up for a long
and heavy-hitting ride." The book rises like a phoenix out of the
ashes of AVENGERS:DISASSEMBLED and is populated by what seems to
be teen versions of Earth's Mightiest Heroes, namely Captain
America, Thor, Iron Man, and the Hulk. YOUNG AVENGERS  writer
Allan Heinberg is quick to point out that looks may be deceiving
and invites readers to come aboard and be formally introduced to
these new heroes. YOUNG AVENGERS is penciled by Jim Cheung and
debuts in February.

Besides YOUNG AVENGERS, February also brings us the return of
RUNAWAYS (by Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona) and the debut
of LIVEWIRES (by Adam Warren and Rick Mays).  The success of
RUNAWAYS told us that this type of storytelling works and was the
inspiration for MARVEL NEXT. In this all-new beginning for the
popular teens heroes who claim a gaggle of super-villains as
their parents, The Runaways are still on the run and their
adventures are as unpredictable as they are thrilling. Marvel is
proud to include RUNAWAYS under the Marvel Next tag as it is a
sterling example of the youth characters we're proud to
spotlight. LIVEWIRES #1 introduces us to "nanobuilt humanform
combat mecha" who just happen to look like teenagers! These robo-
youths are programmed by a shadowy , quasi-governmental group to
seek out others of their kind...and destroy them.

January brings us X-23 (by Craig Kyle, Christopher Yost, and
Billy Tan) and ARANA: HEART OF THE SPIDER (by Fiona Avery and
Roger Cruz). X-23 features a young girl who has the unique
distinction of being a clone of the X-Men's Wolverine! Created
to be the ultimate weapon, X-23 is sent out into the world on
dangerous and sometimes impossible missions. ARANA is likewise
the story of a young girl, one who seems to emulate a certain
web-headed wallcrawler. Arana gets herself in some pretty tight
spots for her age, but her incredible powers and spunky attitude
always pull her through.

In March readers will be spellbound by SPELLBINDERS (by Mike
Carey and Mike Perkins). The new series puts you right in the
middle of a struggle between warring cliques of witches in a
Salem, MA high school! Our young heroine finds herself wanted by
both sides and dangerous magic is the tool of persuasion. Looking
a bit ahead, April will unveil a new issue of AMAZING FANTASY
featuring the Scorpion, the character who took Marvel.Com by
storm receiving the most votes in an online poll to determine the
next star of Amazing Fantasy.

Todd McFarlane files for Chapter 11; updated

Update: According to court papers, McFarlane Productions has the
following outstanding debts, besides the Tony Twist $15 million
decision and $683,901 owed to McFarlane Toys.

Angel Medina -- $3,960.00
Brian Haberlin -- $13,600.00
Brian Holgiun -- $8,800.00
Comicraft -- $2,200.00
Danny Miki -- $4,070.00
Greg Capullo -- $18,250.00
Greg Scott -- $1,750.00
Jay Fotos -- $5,600.00
Tom Orzechowski -- $2,200.00

In addition, an unspecified amount is owed to Neil Gaiman as a
result of his successful lawsuit against McFarlane.

According to the papers, McFarlane is still pursuing an appeal
against the Twist case.

Court papers also reveal that McFarlane is engaged in an ongoing
suit with New Line regarding the first Spawn film.

The publishing branch of the Todd McFarlane empire filed for
Chapter 11 yesterday, citing the $15 million jury award in the
Tony twist case as the reason.

The Twist-McFarlane libel suit has been ongoing for several
years, with many reverses. In July, a jury awarded hockey player
Twist $15 million, saying that by creating a character named
"Tony Twist" in an issue of Spawn McFarlane had illegally
profited from Twist's name.

At the time, McFarlane's lawyers planned an appeal. It is not
immediately certain from the newswire accounts of the bankruptcy
whether those appeals have been exhausted or not.

The bankruptcy filing only applies to Todd McFarlane Productions
Inc., one of seven companies under the McFarlane Cos. umbrella.
Last year McFarlane claimed total sales of over $50 million.

By filing a Chapter 11 bankruptcy, McFarlane Productions will be
able to reorganize without having to pay creditors during
reorganization. The company will continue to operate normally
until then.

The top creditor listed on the bankruptcy filing is Twist. Other
creditors include McFarlane Toys, which is owed $683,902. Nine
contract artists are owed about $60,000 and a collection agency
is owed about $7,700.

IMAGE COMICS' HERO CAMP

Hero Camp, a full-color monthly ongoing series debuts in May
from Image Comics. Co-created by writer Greg Thompson and artist
Robbi Rodriguez, Hero Camps takes a lively look at teenage self-
discovery and superheroes.

Here's how Image describes the book:

"This spring comic readers are invited to enroll at Camp
Enokchuk -- a summer camp where 'the super-powered become super-
people' -- a place where classes such as Heroic Flight Patterns,
Super-Strength Training and Mastering Witty Banter are the norm
and every camper is training for the day they might be called
upon to save the universe. (or, at the very least, their
neighborhood)."

According to Thompson, readers should be able to identify with
the book's main character, Eric, a normal teen who just happens
to be the offspring of the world's most popular superheroes.

"I think most people have felt like an outsider at some point
in their lives. The choice we1ve all had to make is whether or
not to let that define who we are," Thompson said. "Eric may not
have superpowers, but he's a bright, resourceful kid who always
manages to maintain the upper hand. Everyone loves an underdog,
and Eric, the main character in the story, is definitely that."

Hero Camp begins as Eric's parents send him to Camp Enokchuk to
discover and hone his so far undiscovered super-powers. Eric's
family and fellow campers refuse to believe he is powerless, so
in addition to normal teenage anxieties like girls and grades, he
must also worry about surviving daily camp life. To add to these
predicaments, a trio of villains believe that Eric is the key to
destroying Camp Enokchuk and wiping out a cadre of future foes.

It should come as no surprise that the villains attempting to
terrorize Camp Enokchuk are familiar to any kid who ever sat
around a campfire swapping horror stories.

"Originally, there weren't going to be any prototypical baddies
in the stories," Thompson said. "But a friend of mine convinced
me that if you're going to do a superhero book, you gotta have
bad guys. Well, it's a book about a summer camp, so the logical
bad guys are those that we've all used to scare each other. I1m
speaking of the Goatman, Hookman and Bloody Mary."

While the non-powered Eric is the star of the book, the
spotlight also shines on a variety of heroes in training,
including Hottie, a scorching hot flame-thrower, Tex (aka
Cowboy), an invincible cowpoke with a magical lasso, Dina Mite,
a super strong spitfire and member of the legendary Mite family
of super heroes, Hype, a super speedster with an invisible
girlfriend and many, many more.

Thompson and Rodriguez are using shorter story arcs, one shots
and backup stories to develop the characters.

"I really prefer shorter story arcs and backup stories,"
Thompson said. "I've got a short attention span, and grew up
reading comics from the Silver and Golden Age, so it just makes
sense to me. I also like the fact that anyone will be able to
pick up an issue of Hero Camp and either get a complete story or
only have to find the previous issue to complete a story. While
actions will have repercussions and certain themes will run
throughout the book, a new reader will never have to worry about
not knowing what's going on. It's going to be really accessible
for new readers."

CONSTANTINE VIDEOGAME

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, THQ and SCi have
announced the talent line-up secured for the Constantine
videogame, which is based on the upcoming film from Warner Bros.
Pictures, set for release in February, and the DC Comics/Vertigo
Hellblazer comics.

Keanu Reeves, Tilda Swinton, Gavin Rossdale and Max Baker have
their likeness recreated in this explosive third person action
game. Players will be able to assume the title role of the film's
protagonist John Constantine (Reeves) in the game.

Here's how the game is described:

"Inspired by the DC Comics/Vertigo Hellblazer graphic novels,
with all the supernatural thrills of the highly anticipated film,
you are cast as irreverent mystic detective John Constantine and
must embark on an investigation in a world of demons and angels
that exists just beneath the landscape of contemporary Los
Angeles. Caught up in a series of catastrophic events, it is
imperative that you seek out and destroy pure evil -- before
peace on Earth is destroyed forever."

VIZ LAUNCHES SHONEN JUMP ADVANCED IMPRINT

VIZ, LLC, one of the leading publishers and distributors of manga
and anime for North American audiences, has announced the launch
of SHONEN JUMP ADVANCED, a new imprint under the company's SHONEN
JUMP brand that will present the latest cutting-edge manga
stories offering titles with progressive storylines and
characters to older teens and young adults.

The first three titles to be offered by SHONEN JUMP ADVANCED will
include EYESHIELD 21, HUNTER X HUNTER, and I''S. The trio of
titles are each rated "T+" for older teens and will hit store
shelves in April of 2005 with an MSRP of $7.99.

EYESHIELD 21, HUNTER X HUNTER and I''S are all hugely successful
in Japan and have been serialized in the pages of Weekly Shonen
Jump, the country's leading manga anthology that reaches close to
3 million readers each week. In North America, SHONEN JUMP titles
like RUROUNI KENSHIN, YU-GI-OH! and NARUTO regularly top national
sales lists for the manga and graphic novel categories. As the
popularity of the manga genre proliferates among older teens and
young adults, the English debuts of these new titles will further
validate VIZ and SHONEN JUMP's mission to bring the latest manga
stories aimed at these demographics to North American.

EYESHIELD 21, Volume 1 * MSRP: $7.99 * Available April 2005
The growing success of sports-based manga stories continues with
EYESHIELD 21, the first American football graphic novel to appear
in North America. The manga, by creator Riichiro Inagaki and
artist Yusuke Murata, tells the story of Sena Kobayakawa, a high
school freshman who has been bullied all his life. The sadistic
captain of the football team discovers Sena and his lightning
fast speed and forces him to join the team. A wacky cast of
characters rounds out this bone-crushing and ridiculously silly
slapstick comedy about a young man's struggle to overcome
obstacles and develop self respect. In Japan, EYESHIELD 21 is a
popular ongoing series that has sold more than 5 million copies
and spawned an original video feature.

HUNTER X HUNTER, Volume 1 * MSRP: $7.99 * Available April 2005
A highly anticipated release from Yoshihiro Togashi, the creator
of YUYU HAKUSHO (also published under the SHONEN JUMP brand and
serialized in SHONEN JUMP Magazine), HUNTER X HUNTER focuses on
the fantastic adventures of Gon, the son of a famous Hunter.
Wanting to follow in his father's footsteps, young Gon works hard
to learn how to track down monsters, seek treasure and cast
magical spells. But in order to truly become like his father and
become a licensed Hunter, Gon must also pass the arduous and
dangerous Hunter Exam. Gon quickly befriends two other Hunters-
in-training that include Kurapika, who is motivated by vengeance
for his murdered family, and Leorio, who simply wants to get
rich. Action begins quickly in Volume 1 of HUNTER X HUNTER when
the trio must survive in a forest infested with dangerous
animals, and even more dangerous rivals that want to kill off any
competition.

Yoshihiro Togashi is a prolific manga creator, since his first
manga for Weekly Shonen Jump appeared in 1988, Togashi has
impressed fans with his signature style and fluid character
movements. The HUNTER X HUNTER series has developed a fanatical
following in Japan and spawned several original video features,
an animated series, video games and trading cards in Japan. In
Japan the sales of the graphic novels has surpassed 36 million
copies.

I''S, Volume 1 * MSRP: $7.99 * Available April 2005
Sixteen-year-old Ichitaka Seto is a completely normal Japanese
boy who has a crush on Iori Ishizuki, a girl in his class who has
become so popular since she posed for a swimsuit layout in a
magazine that she now has her own fan club at school. Ichitaka is
afraid to make his feelings known, lest Iori think he is just
another sleazy creep hitting on her, but when he's randomly
selected to work with her on the two-person Freshman Committee,
he sees an opportunity. Things grow more complicated when
Ichitaka's childhood "girlfriend," Itsuki, returns from the U.S.,
and ends up living in his house! Itsuki is no longer the shy
young girl Ichitaka remembers. Now he must reconcile his feelings
for each and work hard to make sure that his angst-riddled high
school life doesn't get any more dramatic.

Author Masakazu Katsura, has created other popular titles such
as VIDEO GIRL AI (also published by VIZ), WINGMAN, SHADOW LADY,
art books and a postcard book, all published in Japan with over
9 million copies of the graphic novels sold to date. Katsura's
quirky sense of humor, penchant for O'Henry-like plot twists,
lush screen tones and depiction of nubile young ladies is
celebrated in manga fan circles.

"The launch of SHONEN JUMP ADVANCED further defines SHONEN
JUMP's commitment to offer current and cutting edge stories
straight from Japan that are aimed at the growing legion of older
teens and young adults that have embraced the manga genre,"
states Yumi Hoashi, vice president of SHONEN JUMP. "In Japan,
manga readers range in all ages and walks of life. The debut of
these three titles by SHONEN JUMP ADVANCED will now provide North
American fans with progressive stories aimed specifically at
older teen readers at a highly attractive retail price."

MILLAR, LAND MOVE TO ULTIMATE FF IN MAY

There'll be no Millar Time for Thor. Despite published reports
claiming otherwise, writer Mark Millar and artist Greg Land will
not be teaming for a relaunch of Marvel's Thor in 2005. While
the proposed revamp/restart of the "Thor" concept and character
within the Marvel Universe is still on the table - based on an
original idea by Neil Gaiman while was further developed by J.
Michael Straczynski, Marvel has confirmed for Newsarama that the
book will not feature the Millar-Land team.

Instead of haunting the halls of Asgard, Newsarama has learned
that Millar and Land will move to the Ultimate version of New
York, and sign on as the new creative team for Marvel's Ultimate
Fantastic Four with May's issue #19. For Millar, it will mark a
return to the series, as he and co-writer Brian Bendis together
wrote the first arc for the series, "The Fantastic," which
established the team in Marvel's "Ultimate" continuity.

Millar and Land will replace the current creative team on the
title, Warren Ellis and Adam Kubert.

When asked for comment about returning to the Ultimate Fantastic
Four, Millar told Newsarama:

"It's a little frustrating because there's only so many hours in
the day and so many fingers on my hand. I was in New York the
week before last and Joe and Dan just asked me if I'd jump onto
Ultimate FF. They knew I hadn't really been involved much with
the book before and had been itching to get my hands on the
characters. I'd plotted the first six issues, but plotting really
means writing a page and a half per issue and letting the
scriptwriter do all the hard work and it's just completely
different from the way I'd write the book if someone had given it
to me solo. So this was intriguing because I really do like the
FF and am just kind of 'mildly into' Thor.

"Joe and Dan also played the guilt card massively in the sense
that Brian and I really do feel like the Mummy and Daddy - he's
the Mummy - of the Ultimate line and there was just nobody lined
up to replace Warren the month before a bloody FF movie was
coming out. The top-selling FF book didn't have a creative team
while Ultimate Spider-Man had Bendis and [Mark] Bagley, Ultimates
has me and [Bryan] Hitch and Ultimate X-Men has Brian K. Vaughan
and Stuart Immonen. Joe and Dan said how cool it would be if Greg
and I committed to Ultimate FF and we kept the Ultimate line to
just four books for a long time. No more minis. No more Ultimate
Fing Fang Foom or whatever. The books have maintained a lock on
the top ten for four entire years now and it's pretty remarkable.
It's the most successful Marvel or DC imprint of the last decade
and all these factors were swimming around my head as I looked at
my Thor pitch and realized that it could wait another year or
whatever if it meant retaining the purity of the Ultimate line.

"Also, like I said, I'm a lot more interested in the FF than
Thor. This idea that started with Neil and was embellished by JMS
and eventually plotted out by me is really nice, but it could be
done anytime. I walked out of The Incredibles thinking it was the
best FF story I'd ever stumbled across and it's nice to be able
to utilize the flood of ideas that came to me for the FF in the
taxi home. Details of the first arc will be made available the
second week in January. This requires some big co-ordination on
the part of Marvel and the other writers so we can't release
details yet. But in terms of a stunt it's probably the biggest
and most ambitious thing the Ultimate Universe has attempted so
far. This will be the most fast-paced and idea-heavy book in the
Marvel line as of May. Just the way the FF should be."
