Pictures, with Natalie Portman ("Star Wars: Episodes I-III," "Closer," "Garden State") set to star. "Natalie Portman is one of the most gifted actresses working today, and we're thrilled that she is bringing her extraordinary talents and presence to this film," Silver said. Set in the futuristic landscape of totalitarian Britain, "V For Vendetta" stars Portman as a young woman who becomes the unlikely ally of a mysterious revolutionary. "With 'V For Vendetta,' the Wachowski Brothers have created an uncompromising vision of the future driven by a totally original superhero," said Silver. The screenplay by Andy Wachowski and Larry Wachowski is based on the acclaimed graphic novel "V For Vendetta" by author Alan Moore ("The Watchmen," "Swamp Thing") and illustrator David Lloyd. Originally collected by DC Comics as a ten-part series in 1988, "V For Vendetta" has been praised for its vision, potency and eloquence. Moore is widely considered to be one of the finest comic writers of all time, and has been credited with single- handedly expanding the potential of the comic book medium with his work. Produced by Joel Silver, Andy Wachowski and Larry Wachowski, "V For Vendetta" will be directed by James McTeigue, who served as the First Assistant Director on the "Matrix" trilogy. "V For Vendetta" will be filmed on location in Berlin beginning in early March and will be released in the Fall of 2005 by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company. +++++ LETHAL INSTINCT FROM ALIAS PUBLISHING "SEEKING TO HIT #1 WITH A SILVER BULLET!" Law enforcement drama is a popular entertainment subject in television, novels, and comic books, but Romulo Soares came up the storyline of Lethal about 6 years ago. Through those years he has went through many incarnations with different pencillers before settling upon the final version that will be coming out April 2005 from Mike S. Millar's Alias Publishing. In the approved version of Lethal #1, Wagner Baehr helped him in the plot and Bart A. Thompson of Approbation Comics helped with the final scripting. For Romulo's creation, the storyline is a police & suspense with terror touches and super-hero action in an urban atmosphere... Things he is a big fan of and something he hopes will attract new readers and fans to the series. Romulo has known Mike (S. Millar) for a while now through his Lynx Studio which does many works for Mr. Millar. Because of this relationship, Mike approached Romulo with his idea for his publishing venture and he quickly sent projects to him. The approval for Lethal came quickly and Romulo is very happy with the partnership between Lynx and Alias. When asked about why Alias opposed to other creator owned publishing companies, he says that the contract with Alias is the best in the market. Lethal Instinct is the story Frank Aaron, a police officer in Blackstone City who carries a curse in the form of severe Lycanthropy - Frank is a werewolf. Sharing the secret of his plight with Dr. Carl Sanchez and his homicide partner Daniel Whitman, Frank hopes to control or end his curse in order to join "The Special Division" which deals in superhuman and paranormal cases to help those like himself. As mentioned before, Lethal Instinct is one of the four new titles that will be released by Alias in April. The first issue will be 75 cents and will be available for pre-order in the February 2004 Previews catalog. +++++ Thanks to Tony Baltulis Marvel donates vintage comic books to museum in Angouleme, France Kate Brumback Canadian Press January 3, 2005 PARIS (AP) - Spider-Man, Captain America, the Incredible Hulk and Daredevil have bounded across the Atlantic in a single leap - a giant donation of almost 300,000 vintage comic books to a French museum. Jean-Pierre Mercier, who manages the collection for France's National Centre for Comic Books and Images, said he was "flabbergasted" when he learned in March that Marvel Enterprises wanted to donate the huge quantity of comic books dating back as far as the 1950s. The gift, from one of the top U.S. comic publishers, was made through Gifts in Kind, a U.S. charity that distributes donated items. "Marvel specifically requested that they go overseas to a cultural institution where they would benefit numerous children and numerous people," said charity volunteer Margaret Mallon- Pujol. She said the French comic book museum was the ideal candidate. The museum, in the western city of Angouleme, didn't know what a superhuman task it was in for. Mercier said Mallon-Pujol first offered 800,000 to one million comic books, but he declined the offer. Such a gift would overwhelm his museum. Instead, the museum selected only what it believed to be the earliest books, including some published under Marvel's early names: Timely Comics and Atlas Comics. In June, about 275,000 books arrived in 1,800 boxes. Among them were hundreds of copies of the same editions. Most date from the early 1950s to the late 1970s. Mercier believes the collection represents nearly 80 per cent of comic books produced by Marvel during that span. The comics are being sorted into five identical collections, two for the centre and others for France's National Library and a museum in Amadora, Portugal, said Catherine Bourgouin, spokeswoman of the Angouleme museum. The destination of the fifth collection has not yet been determined. The Angouleme museum hasn't decided how it will display its colourful treasure - although an exhibit on the glory years of Spiderman, the Hulk, the Fantastic Four and other superheroes is expected. For customs purposes, the collection's value was estimated at $300,000 US, but experts say the real value is difficult to ascertain. A mint-condition, first-edition Spiderman from 1963, for example, would be valued today at $32,500 US, said Frederic Solti, manager of the Gael comic book shop in Paris. Susan Corrigan, president of the Gifts in Kind charity in Alexandria, Va., said Marvel is one of the top donors to the organization and has given millions of comics to young people in the United States and overseas. "They just thought this would be an effective thing to donate worldwide," she said. The agreement with Gifts in Kind allows the museum to destroy duplicate copies, but it cannot barter, trade, sell or give any away. "We have received e-mails, phone calls and letters from fans and specialists who protest and complain about this decision, but there is no way for us to deal with that in any other way," Mercier said. An initial sorting, numbering and stamping of the books should be completed in 2005. The museum is still waiting for Marvel to send about 8,000 books - the oldest, rarest ones - which the publisher is scanning into its digital archives. Some of the most valuable include love- story comics - designed to appeal to girls - from the 1950s and earliest issues of the Fantastic Four, Spiderman and Captain America, among others. Marvel is also home to Captain Marvel, the X-Men, the Avengers, and other superheroes. The French museum was created in 1990 and its collection has consisted mostly of French and Belgian comics. It organizes a four-day international comic book festival each January. The festival this year is Jan. 27-30 and includes shows on comic books figures, young comic book artists, and the origins and future of comics. +++++ DEMATTEIS AND PLOOG JOIN DESPERADO PUBLISHING Abadazad creators bring new all-ages title Stardust Kid in May Contact: Ian Feller 813/889-8977 ian@813sands.com January 6, 2005, Atlanta, GA - With the announcement that Disney would relaunch Abadazad as a series of children's novels, Desperado Publishing is set to bring another all-ages comic book title by creators J.M. DeMatteis and Mike Ploog into the direct market to help fill the niche. Set for release in May, Stardust Kid will feature the same creative team of J.M. DeMatteis, Mike Ploog, Nick Bell and Dave Lanphear from Abadazad and will be suitable for kids as well as adults. Stardust Kid is planned to be a five-issue mini-series with each issue containing at least 22 pages of story and art and covers by Mike Ploog. Here is how J.M. DeMatteis describes his new fairy tale: "Twelve year old Cody DiMarco's best friend is Paul Brightfield: The bond between the two boys is deeper than anyone could ever suspect. You see, Paul Brightfield isn't human: he's the last of The Old Ones, ancient elemental beings from The Time Before - when no man walked the Earth and magic was a given - and Cody is the only one in all the world who knows Paul's secret. "One October night, Paul Brightfield vanishes...at the same moment that, in nearby Wilde Park, a massive cocoon burrows up out of the earth: Within the cocoon lies a hate-filled creature that will soon destroy Cody's life - and the lives of everyone he loves..." "Everyone at Desperado is thrilled to have Stardust Kid join our exciting line-up for 2005," said Desperado publisher Joe Pruett. "J.M. DeMatteis and Mike Ploog are two creators whose work I have been a fan of for years. It will be a treat to get a chance to work with them and it will be a joy to put out a series that will appeal to so many people. Abadazad was a great comic, and in its wake, Stardust Kid will be an even better one." "Mike Ploog and I wanted to follow up Abadazad with another all- ages fantasy, a series that would be just as magical - and kid- friendly - but strike out into somewhat darker territory," DeMatteis said. "I turned to the Stardust Kid: a project I've nurtured for nearly two decades. Despite the long development, it wasn't until Mike and I started working on it together that the story really came together. We're both delighted to be reunited with our Abadazad collaborators, Nick Bell and Dave Lanphear, for what we think will be a wonderful series." Stardust Kid will appear with Desperado Publishing's other releases in the March 2005 issue of Diamond Previews found in the Image Comics section. The March issue of Previews will be in stores February 23. For more information on Stardust Kid and other Desperado Publishing titles, please log onto their web site at www.desperadopublishing.com. Come celebrate with us the release of HOLY MOLY, the first comic book by New York artist LEAH HAYES. WHEN: Saturday, January 8th, from 8PM on... WHERE: Pianos (upstairs), 158 Ludlow (at Stanton) Written and illustrated almost entirely during class time over several years, "Holy Moly" is a baffling example of how profoundly interesting drawing, instead of paying attention, can be. Often this behavior is misunderstood; one might be mistakenly called such names as, "flaky", "jerknut", or "a youth". Luckily, Leah Hayes was not paying attention when such ego-deflating names were being thrown her way, because the result is one of the most idiosyncratic publications of recent memory. Not quite comics and not strictly a sketchbook, HOLY MOLY is a captivating example of stream-of-consciousness that displays both Hayes' sharp wit and exquisite drawing style. Leah Hayes is an illustrator and musician. She has worked for the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and various music magazines. She draws pictures during the day, and plays music by night. She has also been yelled at her whole life for doodling during class. HOLY MOLY by Leah Hayes 40-pages * $4.95 Published by Fantagraphics Books +++++ REVOLUTIONARY NEW PUBLISHING HOUSE CELEBRATES LAUNCH Tiverton, ON, Canada & Bayville, New Jersey, USA, January 5th, 2004 - A new publishing house that uses a revolutionary business model, called Open Book Press, is now up and running with offices in the U.S. and Canada. Writers, artists, and creators from all walks of life are excited at the news of the launch of Open Book Press. The reason these people are excited is because the company promises to be the first publisher to offer new and unknown talented creators the chance to have their work published and distributed worldwide, and to share in a much larger portion of the sales royalties than offered by any other publisher. The company has expressed a desire to produce material in every genre and format, especially graphic novels, which has also piqued the interest of many avid readers and fans around the globe. The reason that creators are so interested in the company is not only because of it's open door policy, accepting submissions for anything that can be printed in book form, but also because it pays out a much larger percentage of the sales royalties to the creators than any other company. Although the company offers little to nothing in the way of writing advances, they plan to more than make up for it by paying a minimum royalty of 40% of sales back to the creators. This is just one of the reasons that the business plan at Open Book Press is being called revolutionary, because most traditional publishers only offer 5- 12% in royalties, and most lean towards the lower end of that range. The other reason that writers and creators are clamoring over this new company is because of its strategic printing and distribution partnership with Booksurge LLC. Booksurge runs various automated printing facilities worldwide, virtually one in every major country. The company also acts as a distributor, peddling books to stores, chains, libraries, and online in every country where they have a printing facility. This opens up opportunities for writers to reach audiences all over the globe, and offers many opportunities to have books translated into several languages, bringing a creators work to markets they would not have been able to reach in the past. Through Booksurge all Open Book Press books will be available on a non-return, print- on-demand basis world wide. This system not only eliminates the situation of writers and creators having to pay back their advance to their publisher, but also lowers the overhead of Open Book Press to such an extent that they are able to offer the much higher level of royalties while still effectively maintaining a marketing presence on a worldwide scale. Open Book Press is interested in publishing high quality books of every genre, from horror, to autobio, to western. They are also heavily concentrating on a line of graphic novels that will be debuting for sale on their website in early 2005. Thanks to their partnership with Booksurge, Open Book Press books will be available to independent and chain bookstores worldwide, libraries, and distributors as well as being sold by nearly every major online book retailer including Amazon.com, Barnesandnoble.com, globalbooksinprint.com, and their own website located at http://www.openbookpress.com/. Open Book Press will also be soliciting its graphic novel line to comic distributors such as Diamond, Cold Cut, Last Gasp, and FM International. +++++ From Darren Kane at Marvel Comics http://www.marvel.com JAE LEE EXCLUSIVE TO THE HOUSE OF IDEAS! The distinct and unique pencils of Jae Lee will grace Marvel Comics exclusively. When speaking about his renewed relationship with the House of Ideas, the prolific Lee was forthright in his outlook. "I've worked for many companies over the years, but I've always come back to Marvel. This is home. The friendships I have here go beyond work. It's an amazing, incredible, astonishing, and uncanny place to be." The artist made his published debut in an issue of MARVEL COMICS PRESENTS, in 1991. His work also includes NAMOR with John Byrne, and INHUMANS, for which he won an Eisner Award. Recently, Lee has worked on FANTASTIC FOUR: 1234, of which his pages were displayed at The Society of Illustrators in New York City. One of Lee's past projects served as an important artistic milestone: Hellshock, for Image Comics. "Before then, I was a product of the early 90s. Storytelling and anatomy were the least of my concerns. Hellshock forced me to grow if I wanted to tell the kind of story I needed to tell. Gritty realism replaced anatomically incorrect splash pages," explains Lee. "We are very excited to have Jae back in the House. His unparalleled skills and his style allows us to tell stories that only he can tell," says Marvel Publisher Dan Buckley. Editor in Chief Joe Quesada is equally enthusiastic, as he has a strong kinship with Lee: "Jae and I go back many, many years, in fact we broke in together. The only exception was that he was a mere sixteen year old prodigy. Since then we've worked together numerous times and he was instrumental in the initial success of our Marvel Knights imprint with his Eisner Award winning run on Inhumans. As EIC I'm excited, as a friend I'm thrilled beyond belief that Jae has decided to make Marvel his home. He is truly one of the great artistic talents in the industry today." Jae Lee gave some tantalizing clues to what the near-future holds for him. "I'm working on a moody Hulk story with Peter David. After that, it'll be all out action with a writer who's no stranger to widescreen comics, featuring a character we've all seen on the widescreen. I can't wait to dig my claws into that one." MARVEL COMICS' PHOENIX-ENDSONG #1 SELLS OUT - RISES AGAIN WITH 2ND PRINTING! Marvel Comics announces that PHOENIX-ENDSONG #1 has completely sold out but like its namesake, the beautiful Phoenix of ancient legend, it will return...in the form of a new Limited Edition printing. PHOENIX-ENDSONG, by superstar artist Greg Land and rising star Greg Pak, details the highly-anticipated return of the mysterious and powerful Phoenix Force, the entity that made the character Jean Grey into one of the most popular members of the X-Men ever. The five-issue series has quite a few surprises in store for long time X-Men fans as well as those jumping aboard the merry mutant train for the first time. "One of the greatest concepts to have come out of the Claremont- Byrne X-Men is the Phoenix," says Marvel Editor-In-Chief Joe Quesada. "Now that Jean Grey is gone, the Phoenix Force has become virtually a character in its own right and really deserves its own spotlight. The two Gregs have handed in one of my most favorite miniseries here at Marvel and I'm so happy it's been this well received. Great concept, great story, great creators: win/win/win for the fans!" Greg Pak is best known as an award-winning film writer and director. He's previously stated he's most interested in the "emotional struggles" of the characters surrounding Jean Grey and the Phoenix and this series is fertile ground to explore that drama. Pak is also pretty darn happy and proud of the introductory issue selling out. "Wow, I'm overwhelmed! Of course, I give full credit to the brilliant art of Greg Land, who was clearly put on this earth to draw Dark Phoenix. Matt Ryan's inks and Justin Ponsor's colors are equally stunning. I love those guys," said Pak. "I'm also hugely grateful to all the Phoenix and X-Men fans who are giving the book a shot," Pak went on to say. "We're doing our best to tell a compelling story while remaining true to the incredible histories created by folks like Chris Claremont and Grant Morrison. Here's hoping that readers get hooked and come back for the next issue's even more mind-blowing, heart-rending happenings!" Artist Greg Land is feeling particularly good about his latest project and is pulling out all stops to make this cosmic story of good and evil a true eye-opener. When presented with the news of PHOENIX-ENDSONG #1's sell-through he replied, "Fantastic! It is very exciting to see the fans picking up the book and liking what they see. The first issue really gets things revved up for the rest of the series." Curious readers who may have missed out on the first printing of PHOENIX-ENDSONG #1 will have another chance to witness the resurrection of the best-selling issue when a special Limited Edition printing hits stands January 26th (the same day as issue #2) with a variant cover featuring Jean Grey pictured in her green costume. Along with Dirk the Daring, the CGE creative team: Andy Mangels, Fabio Laguna, James Offredi, and Bill Tortolini will be returning to finish the tale. Three issues (of six) were released under the CGE imprint, Arcana plans to release a collection of those issues and then finish the last three issues. Arcana Editor-In-Chief, Sean O'Reilly told THE PULSE he was a fan of the series and that was what interested him in publishing the end. "When Val first introduced it, I bought all three issues," began O'Reilly. "I loved the series and loved the game and MV Creations did an amazing job of translating something so fun into a fantastic read! About three months ago, we became interested in finishing off the series. Val [Staples, President of MV Creations] and I sat down and made it happen." "Val is one of the hardest working people in this entire industry," continued O'Reilly. "He has a big heart and his wonderful reputation preceded him. I was lucky enough to sit down with him at SDCC this year and we just talked. It was a great learning experience and I literally sat down and just tried to take in all of his insights and experience. I would go to war with Val any day of the week. He is the one working hard, making sure that Don Bluth et al. are happy with the work and making sure that all the pieces of this puzzle fit. Again ... he's fantastic to work with!" O'Reilly said he thinks Dragon's Lair is something that almost any comic reader can appreciate for a variety of reasons. "It's fun," enthused O'Reilly. "This is a great read intended for an all-ages audience. It's nostalgic for those who can remember the original video game and Saturday morning cartoon series and it's fresh enough for readers who have never even heard of the property." "Arcana is bringing back the original team as we don't feel you can improve of the level of quality that MV Creations has set," continued O'Reilly. "This exceptional story is written by Andy Mangels, pencils are by the very talented Fabio Laguna, James Offredi's beautiful colors will be gracing the pages and Bill Tortolini will bring the story to life with his precision lettering. We are releasing all three issues in a TRIPLE-SIZED spectacular first issue! It will be 66 pages of pure Dragon's Lair action bringing everyone up to speed before we release the never before seen three books that concludes the story arc. We wanted to make sure that everyone was on board from the beginning and are TRIPLE-SIZING this book, with a BRAND NEW COVER for $4.95. It is one of the lowest price points we can get for that many pages. It will be a monster! We are tentatively scheduling Dragon's Lair to come out for July. It really depends on Fabio's schedule but I've talked with him and he is very excited about getting back to a project that he loves!" O'Reilly hopes Dragon's Lair isn't the only property from Staples that will be published under the Arcana imprint. "I'm hoping that I can demonstrate to Val our integrity, passion and drive so that I can prove to him that Arcana is a wonderful home for his projects and for his work." ------------------------ Yahoo!
