There's lots of good news to kick off the year with. Here's the short list, and all the details are below: -- An Heir To The Top Shelf 'Fortune' Is Born! -- The Next Comic Book Artist (#6) Will Be An "Eisner Tribute Issue" -- CBLDF News: U.S. Government Seizes Parody Comics At Customs -- Diamond's Scoop Names OWLY Best Of Year! -- The Advocate Names THE MIRROR OF LOVE Best Of Year! -- Time.Com Names Jeffrey Brown In Top 10 Of Year! -- School Library Journal Names Carnet De Voyage In Best Of Year! -- Congrats To Bob Burden On The Return Of The Flaming Carrot! -- In Previews: Jeffrey Brown's MINISULK & Max Estes' HELLO, AGAIN -- Upcoming Releases, Recent Reviews, & More! ******************************************************* HEIR TO THE TOP SHELF "FORTUNE" IS BORN ******************************************************* Mr. Carter Grant Warnock was born to Brett & Lisa Warnock on Wednesday (New Comics Day!), December 15, 2004 at 3:29 pm. He weighed in at 9lbs 1oz, and was 20 1/2" long. He had a rough start figuring out the whole breathing and eating gig, was on an I.V. for his first few days, and even had to spend some time at another hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. But, after this difficult transition, he miraculously turned around, healed very very quickly, and went home almost a week later. Brett & Lisa are having loads of fun with him now (in spite of serious sleep deprivation), and he's doing fabulous, feeding, sleeping and pooping like nobodies business. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year indeed! http://www.topshelfcomix.com/news.php?article=73 ******************************************************* COMIC BOOK ARTIST (VOL 2) #6 WILL BE A "WILL EISNER TRIBUTE ISSUE" ******************************************************* As many of us are only too painfully aware, sequential art legend Will Eisner passed away on Monday, January 3, 2005. In his honor and as a means of celebrating Will's impact on the art of comics, COMIC BOOK ARTIST magazine will be devoting its next issue (due in Spring) to the man's life, career, and influence. The entire edition of the three-time Eisner Award-winning magazine will spotlight the creator by featuring a major tribute section contributed by many of the comic world's reigning talents. A portion of the proceeds from this issue will be donated to the American Cancer Society and to the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund in Will's honor. Cartoonists and industry professionals willing to contribute to and share anecdotes with Comic Book Artist are encouraged to contact Jon B. Cooke, the magazine editor, as soon as possible (email: jonbcooke@aol.com). ******************************************************* CBLDF NEWS: U.S. GOVERNMENT SEIZES PARODY COMICS AT CUSTOMS ******************************************************* U.S. Customs seized copies of the anthology Stripburger (on their way to Top Shelf Productions), charging that the stories "Richie Bush" by Peter Kuper and "Moj Stub" (translated from the Serbian as "My Pole") by Bojan Redzic constituted "clearly piratical copies" of registered and recorded copyrights. The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund has retained counsel to challenge these seizures. We'll have more to report on this soon. For the full story, click here: http://www.topshelfcomix.com/news.php?article=68 ******************************************************* DIAMOND'S SCOOP NAMES OWLY IN BEST TRADES OF YEAR! ******************************************************* Diamond Galleries SCOOP gave Andy Runton's OWLY it's #2 spot in their list of Best Comic Trade Paperbacks of 2004. They said, "[Owly] is one of those creations that just makes you glad you're into comics. In the hands of a lesser storyteller, the wonderful sentiment in Owly might devolve into sentimentality, but Runton is no lesser storyteller. He's one of those talents that just makes you wonder what he's going to be doing in five years if he's this good already. The storytelling is done without words. It's straight forward, deceptively simple, and compelling to adults and children alike. Do not miss this book." http://www.topshelfcomix.com/catalog.php?type=12&title=425 ******************************************************* THE ADVOCATE NAMES THE MIRROR OF LOVE IN BEST BOOKS OF YEAR! ******************************************************* The Advocate, the nation's leading gay and lesbian publication, gave Alan Moore and Jose Villarrubia's THE MIRROR OF LOVE the #4 spot in their list of Best Books of 2004. They said, "Art and life and history all receive iconic treatment as we look into the stunning Mirror of Love. Passion, pain, and persistence all bubble forth in the sublime words of Alan Moore, and stone, blood, and light have never combined to feel so lifelike as in the alluring imagery of Jose Villarrubia." http://www.topshelfcomix.com/catalog.php?type=3&title=206 ******************************************************* TIME.COM NAMES JEFFREY BROWN IN TOP 10 OF YEAR! ******************************************************* Andrew Arnold of Time says, "One of a growing sub-genre of comix artists who create art out of their (often failed) sex life, Jeffrey Brown's work has stood out as among the best. BIGHEAD marked a change for Brown from the autobiographical, comix-verite style of last year's "Unlikely," to using the tropes of superhero comix to explore the author's own insecurities and power fantasies. Bighead fights absurd villains like Mutatoe but is baffled by the smarmy powers of The Brit, a pipe-smoking lothario with designs on the lovely Rebessica. Drawn in a style that veers from childish scrawl to a hilariously crude version of the mainstream's "house style," BIGHEAD looks and reads like an unselfconscious fanboy's labor of love -- which it is, sort of. Besides being a superior parody, BIGHEAD slyly reveals the author's personal issues and in some ways, everyone's." http://www.time.com/time/bestandworst/2004/comics.html ******************************************************* SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL NAMES CARNET DE VOYAGE IN BEST OF YEAR. ******************************************************* CARNET DE VOYAGE was named to the School Library Journal's "Best Books of 2004 List." This title was included in the list of "Adult Books for Height School Students," and is scheduled for a featured review in the upcoming issue of School Library Journal. ******************************************************* CONGRATS TO BOB BURDEN ON THE RETURN OF THE FLAMING CARROT! ******************************************************* We wanted to congratulate Bob Burden on his long awaited return to the comics field, and the 25th anniversary of Flaming Carrot! The new story is a real humdinger! Glad to see you haven't lost the magic, Bob. For those of you who never read this surreal, cult classic back in the 80's and 90's this is the perfect chance to experience the madness and mayhem with an amazing first new issue from Image! Just released and in stores now! A preview of the first 9 pages at http://www.flamingcarrot.com ******************************************************* IN PREVIEWS NOW (For Pre-Ordering Books Shipping In March) ******************************************************* MINISULK by Jeffrey Brown http://www.topshelfcomix.com/catalog.php?type=12&title=460 The author of the autobiographical classics CLUMSY and UNLIKELY takes a break from books about girls for this humorous short story collection featuring fiction, gags and autobiography.
