Comments:  Ever wonder what it felt like to be a vampire?  The
guy depicted in this story is wandering the streets, having a
burning feeling inside, a craving, a hunger, a thirst.  This very
strange guy is named Ash.  Ash compares his craving to what
junkies on heroin feel.  So he finds himself going to this large
nightclub for Goths.  The nightclub is called "Hell" and he
refers the place as the Disney for Goths.  The artwork in this
comic book is over-the-top!  Highly detailed and each panel is
like a masterpiece done by Rembrandt's great-great-great
grandson.  Some slippery methods are depicted as our vampire
gives us a tour of the nightclub innards and tells some big guy
that he dropped some money on the floor, when he goes down to
retrieve it, the vampire breaks his neck and carries him off into
the restroom, where he sticks a corkscrew into his neck for his
drinking purposes.  This is not your typical Anne Rice "Interview
with a Vampire" vampire, nor is it anything like the vampires you
will find on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.  This story moves like the
very first Wesley Snipe's Blade movie.  In the first Blade movie,
you are introduced to the world of vampires and in this story,
you're introduced to the world of vampirism through one vampire's
eyes.  It will completely keep you engrossed!  Ashes is another
take on vampirism that will completely floor you!

Publisher: Viz Graphic Novel
Creator: Yoko Matsushita

Comments:  Asato Tsuzuki has a very important job.  He is the
Minister of Hades and his job is to escort the dead to their
final resting place.  Tsuzuki has never had any problems, until
he encounters Hisae - a fatally ill dancer that keeps on clinging
to life because he wants to compete in 1 final dance contest.
It is Hisae's calling, but not the way Tsuzuki expected.  Tsuzuki
sees a horrific sight, he sees blood splattered on Hisae's
apartment walls.  Hisae did not die from his terminal disease, he
was murdered.  This story is Constantine meets CSI meets X-Files
meets a little bit of Law & Order.

Name: Sonic the Hedgehog #145
Publisher: Archie Adventure Series
Writer: Ken Penders
Pencils: Ron Lim  Inks: Al Milgrom
Price: $2.19
Comments:  After reading Sonic the Hedgehog #145, I must say the
story is pretty thrilling.  Locke is on a quest and there is no
telling what will happen to Locke during this quest.  I love the
display of powers, like wielding the power chaos.  The
introduction to the Sonic mainplayers was fabulous.  This comic
book gives out great information on Sonic, in which it goes in
detail about his super speed and his loyalty to the kingdom of
Acorn.  Then it goes on to give biographical information on
Tails, Knuckles the Eshidna and Amy Rose Hedgehog.  I liked the
description of their powers and this is great information for
anyone jumping onto the story for the first time.  Then their
arch nemesis Doctor Robotnik hates them all and this really keeps
me right on the edge of my seat!

Name: Shouji Gatou & Retsu Tateo Present: Full Metal Panic! 03
Publisher: ADV Manga
Writer: Shouji Gatou
Artist: Retsu Tateo
Price: $9.99
Comments:  This is a girly comic book, but the story is fun and
somewhat dramatic (at times).  Kaname Chidari is young, popular
and pretty, but she desires to be an ordinary high school
student...right!    There is some fantasy and mysticism in this
story, because the reader is introduced to Sosuke Sagara who is a
special agent of Mithril and he tries to protect Kaname from the
forces of evil.  Where I was getting bored was when Sosuke and
Kaname start having a romantic liaison.  Then the story becomes
one big romance story and of course there is a rival, another
woman who likes Sosuke.  Absolutely boring story that starts off
with some fire and ends with a flickering sizzle.  Yawn!

Name: Army of Darkness - Shop Till You Drop Dead #1
Publisher: DDP - Dynamite Entertainment
Price: $2.99
Written by: James Kuhoric
Pencils: Nick Bradshaw  Colors: Etienne St. Laurent

Comments:  The whole story about the Army of Darkness, originates
from Necronomicon Ex Mortis (the Book of the Dead) and I hope
that in a future Army of Darkness comic book, maybe it will be
discussed on the origins of the book, who wrote it, the purpose
of the book and where it came from.  There can be a full story on
the Book itself.  Also, it would be fun to know who had the book
in his or her possession at one time.  Perhaps evil icons like
the Marquis de Sade and Hitler once owned this book, or perhaps a
mystical icon like Nostradamus once studied it.  There are many
ancient secrets to this Book and I want to know more about it.  I
love the briefing on where this story has been, like the mention
that Ash had a trip to Egypt to fight Dildo-Ho-Tep.  Army of
Darkness - Shop Till You Drop Dead #1 was filled with comedy and
some scary moments!  I had a good laugh when Ash's boss tells him
that he is one of his favorite employees in Housewares, but since
he used many Houseware's supplies to ward off a Deadite, his
wages will be garnished.  Poor Ash saves the world once again and
gets screwed.  If it wasn't for bad luck, Ash wouldn't have any
luck at all. Ash does have the way with women and now I know what
Moxie means...mucho machoismo!  I would say that Ash has Moxie.
It was incredible how the Book was moving about, possesses the
body of a wandering scorpion, crawls into the city, possesses a
human and then is on a flight headed to see Ash.  Never judge a
pretty face as someone pure and innocent, they can turn into a
hidious demonic creature, especially in the reality of Ash.  I
know Ash is used to that and can keep his composure in that sort
of crisis, but for anyone else, it would be a nightmare to deal
with.  At the end, all hell breaks loose and I can only wonder
how Ash will handle this mess.  Excellent story and spectacular
artwork.  Army of Darkness breathes with brilliance!

PS238 #9
32 pages, black & white, color covers, $2.99
by Aaron Williams
aaron@ps238.com

Distributed by Dorkstorm Press
Published by Henchman Publishing
www.ps238.com

PS238 is the school for metaprodigy children. All the kids are
children of super-powered or Supernatural beings. Almost all of
them have powers themselves. All except Tyler Marlocke that is.
His parents sent him to this special school in hopes that he
will be ready if he does get super powers some day. As if all
heroes need powers to get the job done! That's right, it looks
like Tyler is going to start training under the wing of
Revenant, the very rich vigilante detective. Now this kid is
somewhat reluctant to pursue this course of action so he might
be a little clumsy from nervousness.

It really is fun to see how many ways Aaron can look at the
super hero genre and put twists on it using kids. This
particular episode is that much better as it takes a close look
at the classic kid sidekick role. No months of training in the
cave for this kid. Right to the roof to try out the grappling
hook with comical results. But there is more to the story as
they fall into an actual case while visiting an "Information
Broker" and they accidentally let in a thief. Now the dynamic duo
are off on a chase and as the fight is join it is a race as to
weather our young hero, Moonshadow, will activate the right
gadget before he is splattered all over the sidewalk. As it
turns out, he uses the right gadget that is for for something
else than saving his life and in the end it saves the day.

In the back up story the kids are out at a store and witness a
bigger kid stealing a box of snack cakes. The kids are
frustrated because they want to stop a crime but are forbidden to
use their powers in public. So they force Tyler to confront the
boy with his crime. Luckily the shop owner overhears and they
are safe from the bully's wrath, even as he leaves them with a
threat. They get an unexpected reward at his expense that is
very satisfying.

I enjoy this series for the variety and human interest angle
with each episode. The art is always right on, whether it
is darker to set a mood or silly to get a maximum humor effect.
The plots are a mix of humor, action, and very often mystery. It
is a superb entertaining package you all will enjoy. You need
not start from the first issue either. Pick one up and see what
I mean.

FULL FRONTAL NERDITY ANNUAL #1
32 pages, black & white, color cover, $2.99
Distributed by Dork Storm Press
Published by Henchman Publishing
www.Nodwick.com

by Aaron WIlliams

I've talked enough about the magic that Aaron Williams brings to
Nodwick and PS238 that by now you should know anything he does
is worth looking at.  This one is no exception. Aaron created
FULL FRONTAL NERDITY based on the likeness of some friends and
made a monthly web comic about gamers.  Most of the time we find
them in the midst of a role playing game, or devising ways to
play new ones, or talking about them and well . . . they are a
bit obsessed.  The format of the book is a landscape layout,
like PVP, so you see the strips in their original aspect and not
shrunk by half.

So what are these guys like. I guess they are like a lot of
other "nerds", and that is meant as an affectionate term. They
have passion about their hobbies. They are Frank, Nelson and
Zeus but they could be those guys I see every Saturday at the
Comic store pouring over the commons, or closely examining the
rares in the display case, or picking up the latest D&D volume,
or some gem from he used gaming section. You see, behind every
gag about role playing replacing women, or comparing the virtues
of THE MATRIX versus STARSHIP TROOPERS, or explaining why Harry
Potter t-shirts helps you get chicks are real people like the
rest of us. If they don't like the latest edition of D&D they
write a scathing letter, filled with sarcasm. Once the word is
out that STAR WARS is out on DVD, but only the redone versions,
one is upset he can't get digital quality memories of his memory
of the originals while the other fancies the money to be made by
burning DVDs of the originals from the laserdic versions.

It is not all laugh aloud funny but it is all very familiar. We
see ourselves in nearly every page ins some aspect or another. A
particular gem is at the end where the three nerds, and a friend
in Alaska via webcam, do a review of the trailer to STAR WARS:
EPISODE III, REVENGE OF THE SITH. Whether you are an avid fan
or, like these guys, thinks Lucas has lost the magic that was
the original trilogy, you'll like this bit. Since this is a
one-shot it is a perfect introduction to Aaron's special way of
looking at the world of gaming and having some fun with it. Once
you are done with it pass it on to the guy with the Yu-Gi-Oh
cards or the "Gandalf in 2008" t-shirt and spread the enjoyment.

DORK TOWER: THE DORK SIDE OF THE GOON
176 pages, black & white, color cover, $15.99
Collects issues 25-29 and the short story "Igor's Last Date"
Dork Storm Press
www.dorktower.com

by John Kovalic

You can't miss the cover of this collected trade. It is a rift
on the cover to the Pink Floyd album DARK SIDE OF THE MOON with
the triangular head of Matt serving as the prism. No really,
that is how his head is always drawn.

DORK TOWER is about a group of friends who live in the world of
hobbies we are all familiar with. They are gamers and comic fans
and get into movies and computer stuff and some of them even
fall in love. The main story running through these issues is the
tension between Matt and his on again girlfriend Kayleigh. Matt
is really in love with the perky goth, Gilly but she us
preparing to leave on a trip to Europe. Along the way we have
lots of little humorous bits and we also feel the emotions for
the starcrossed couple. Mixed in is other fun stuff with Igor
the way too enthusiastic gamer, the shop keeper who wonders why
he ever got into the business and puts up with lots of strange
customers and lots more.

I have reviewed all those issue in the past so I won't get into
specifics now.  As I look back over the years I have been doing
this column and editing the E-Mag I have a special place in my
heart for certain comics I have been introduced to because of
that work. There have been many with a wide range of quality and
entertainment value. Few have maintained that level, or even
still exist year after year. One I always mention as the Emag
reaches its anniversary has been the work of John Kovalic.  He is
a master cartoonist in every sense of the word. This volume adds
another chapter that promises to continue for a long time. Get
it today.
