Visitors to Hong Kong and other Asian cities discover a wide range of these unique items, generally carved in the shape of animals that symbolize the various birth years of the Chinese calendar. Today seals are still widely used and the art of seal engraving has become more popular than ever before. Many foreigners are now able to appreciate this art form which for a long time has been considered uniquely Chinese. Dark Horse has decided to take this one step further, and has created their own special chops in the shape of our old pals Alien and Predator. The symbol on the bottom is taken from the hieroglyphics seen in Twentieth Century Fox's Aliens vs. Predator film. Designed by Curt Chiarelli. On sale in April, Alien Chop, 5.5" tall figure with a stone texture finish, $29.99. On sale in April, Predator Chop, 5.5" tall figure with a stone texture finish, $29.99. FANTA, BAGGE, WOODRING & BELL IN EMERALD CITY THIS WEEKEND ----------------------------------------------------------------- This weekend is the third annual EMERALD CITY COMIC CONVENTION, held here in our own backyard of Seattle, at the stadium (stupidly named QWEST FIELD) where people typically watch big sweaty men pound the shit of each other but this weekend will instead feature big sweaty men avoiding eye contact with each other while sifting thru long white boxes of yellowed comic books. FANTAGRAPHICS will be hosting the tailgate party, exhibiting all weekend and hosting signings on Saturday afternoon with JIM WOODRING, PETER BAGGE and MARC BELL. Bagge will be debuting his new book, BUDDY DOES SEATTLE, and if that isn't symmetry enough for you, well, go watch the Superbowl instead. http://www.emeraldcitycomicon.com/ DAVE COOPER IN NYC THIS FRIDAY ---------------------------------------------------- In addition to his art opening at the Jonathan Levine Gallery this weekend in New York City (as reported on in our last newsletter), Cooper will also be signing copies of his new book UNDERBELLY at JIM HANLEY'S UNIVERSE this Friday night: WHAT: DAVE COOPER in-store WHEN: Friday, Feb. 4, 5:00PM to 7:00PM WHERE: West 33rd Street (located off 5th Ave. / across from the Empire State Building) For more info, visit: http://www.jhuniverse.com/ STUFF TO KILL A FEW HOURS AT WORK WITH: ----------------------------------------------------------------- PAUL HORNSCHEMEIER PROFILED IN THIS WEEK'S TIME MAGAZINE: http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1022582,00.html LEAH HAYES ONLINE: http://www.leahhayes.com/main.htm JOHNNY RYAN INTERVIEWED: http://www.g4techtv.com/screensavers/features/50833/ Two_Minutes_with_Johnny_Ryan.html WILDRED SANTIAGO INTERVIEWED: http://newsarama.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=26002 NEW BOOKS: ------------------- THE PIN-UP ART OF DAN DeCARLO By DAN DeCARLO $18.95 Softcover 216 pp., two-colors, 6" x 8" ISBN 1-56097-619-5 Edited by Alex Chun and designed by Jacob Covey. DeCarlo is best known as the Archie Comics artist and the man who created every adolescent American boys fantasy, Betty and Veronica. Before his work for Archie, however, DeCarlo created cartoons for men's magazines featuring girls in lingerie -and sometimes less- whom often bared an uncanny resemblance to his more famous Riverdale girls. This book collects those pin-ups, created between 1956 and 1963, in a stunning package presented in two-colors. As an added bonus, many of the gags were written by Marvel Comics legend Stan Lee! BUDDY DOES SEATTLE By Peter Bagge $14.95 340 pp., B&W, 6" x 9" ISBN 1-56097-623-3 Introduction by Everett True. These legendary stories, from the classic first fifteen issues of Bagge's Hate comic, are a defining icon of Seattle's early 1990s culture (the Seattle Weekly has written, "20 years from now, when people wonder what it was like to be young in 1990s Seattle, the only record we'll have is Hate."), as well as Generation X in general (as seen in such films as Kids and Pecker). This is the first time these hilarious stories, starring the hapless Buddy Bradley and his cast of loser cohorts, have ever been available under one cover, and never have they been available at such a low price (it would have cost at least three times as much to read all of these classic stories in any previous editions). Bagge's riotous tales of the early 1990s subculture are more hilarious now than ever, find out why he has been praised by R. Crumb, Matt Groening, John Kricfalusi, Publishers Weekly, Entertainment Weekly and many more. Comedy genius. R. CRUMB SKETCHBOOK Vol. 10: JUNE 1975 - FEB. 1977 By R. CRUMB $19.95 Softcover 160 pp., B&W, 8" x 11" ISBN 1-56097-633-0 R. Crumb is undoubtedly the foremost cartoonist of the latter 20th Century, and his sketchbooks - in which he has written and drawn continually from the early 1960s to present - might rank as his finest achievement. Fantagraphics is proud to present these sketchbooks, in facsimile form, as a comprehensive series of volumes that will eventually run well over 4000 pages. Volume 10, covering mid-1975 through early 1977, is the latest and it represents one of the more inquisitive and soul-searching periods in this phenomenal artist's life. These sketchbooks represent, in essence, something never before achieved in the field of art and literature: a single, unified, organic, (and ongoing) life's work. Even more so than the painter Frida Kahlo's drawn diaries, Crumb's sketchbooks are, as a body of work, incomparable in their magnitude, scope, and intensity, and therein lies their uniqueness and value. R. CRUMB SKETCHBOOK Vol. 10: JUNE 1975 - FEB. 1977 By R. CRUMB $39.95 Hardcover 160 pp., B&W, 8" x 11" ISBN 1-56097-625-X Also available in standard hardcover, or as a signed hardcover for $75.00! Dear Reader, Looking for answers to your Groundhog Day questions? You've come to the right spot! We have all the 411 on February 2, the Groundhog Day Holiday, and how they've been celebrating it in Punxsutawney, PA since 1886. The only thing we don't know is why we still have school on such an important Holiday! Punxsutawney Phil is the only true weather forecasting groundhog. The others are just impostors. There has only been one Punxsutawney Phil. He has been making predictions for over 118 years! Punxsutawney Phil gets his longevity from drinking "groundhog punch," a secret recipe. Phil takes one sip every summer at the Groundhog Picnic and it magically gives him seven more years of life. On February 2, Phil comes out of his burrow on Gobbler's Knob - in front of thousands of followers from all over the world - to predict the weather for the rest of winter. According to legend, if Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter weather. If he does not see his shadow, there will be an early spring. No! Phil's forecasts are not made in advance by the Inner Circle. After Phil emerges from his burrow on February 2, he speaks to the Groundhog Club president in "Groundhogese"(a language only understood by the current president of the Inner Circle). His proclamation is then translated for the world. The celebration of Groundhog Day began with Pennsylvania's earliest settlers. They brought with them the legend of Candlemas Day, which states, "For as the sun shines on Candlemas Day, so far will the snow swirl in May..." Punxsutawney held its first Groundhog Day in the 1800s. The first official trek to Gobbler's Knob was made on February 2, 1887. So the story goes, Punxsutawney Phil was named after King Phillip. Prior to being called Phil, he was called Br'er Groundhog. We remind you once again readers, copying this information for school projects is forbidden! Everyone at Archie Comics wishes you a GREAT February! ************************************************** Click here to read the Editor's Notebook http://www.archiecomics.com/acpaco_offices/newsletter0502/notebo ok.gif ************************************************** COMICS COMING OUT IN FEBRUARY ARCHIE DIGEST #214, on-sale 02/14/05.
