the desolate heat of Tatooine's twin suns, scavenging the rogue
planet for work and connections. You try to keep to yourself and
remain unnoticed as you step into the cantina for refreshment and
maybe drum up some work. After a quick chat with the locals you
exit the cantina hopeful you will be able to make use of this
desolate outback spaceport as a means to an end. Before you can
get too far you run straight into one of the Empire's most feared
and menacing enforcers, an Imperial Sand trooper! You dodge them
after answering a few questions about some missing droids and you
know you've been lucky this time. Sand troopers usually shoot
first and ask questions later. You know this will be your last
visit to Tatooine for long time.

The Sand Trooper is a memorable part of the original, classic
Star Wars movie and is an essential part of any Kotobukiya
collection. On sale in April, 11" tall vinyl figure, packaged in
a color window-box, $99.99

Aliens vs. Predator "chops"

In China, the art of carving and engraving "chops," a device used
to imprint a personal seal of identity, dates back over 3,000
years. Visitors to Hong Kong and other Asian cities discover a
wide range of these unique items, generally carved in the shape
of animals that symbolize the various birth years of the Chinese
calendar.

Today seals are still widely used and the art of seal engraving
has become more popular than ever before. Many foreigners are now
able to appreciate this art form which for a long time has been
considered uniquely Chinese. Dark Horse has decided to take this
one step further, and has created their own special chops in the
shape of our old pals Alien and Predator. The symbol on the
bottom is taken from the hieroglyphics seen in Twentieth Century
Fox's Aliens vs. Predator film.

Designed by Curt Chiarelli.
On sale in April, Alien Chop, 5.5" tall figure with a stone
texture finish, $29.99.

On sale in April, Predator Chop, 5.5" tall figure with a stone
texture finish, $29.99.

Dark secrets unfold in Steve Nile's

Freaks Of The Heartland

Under the weathered skies of America's heartland, and in the
wounded hearts of every family in one tiny rural town, a terrible
secret has been kept for too many years. Now, a young boy named
Trevor must try to keep his younger brother Will from falling
victim to the worst fears of a troubled town that can't begin to
understand the tragic secret that binds its families together.
Some folks would call Trevor's brother a monster. But to Trevor,
Will is just another kid trapped in a dark reality he can't
comprehend. When the situation moves from bad to worse, and their
father threatens to do away with Will, Trevor learns that they're
not alone-that "freak" children were born to other families in
Gristlewood Valley. And just as they were all born at the same
time, it seems their sad, frustrated, and emotionally spent
parents seem to be hatching a plan to see that they disappear at
the same time. Against all odds, and with nothing but love for
his brother in his heart, Trevor is going to do whatever he can
to get Will-and the other freak children-out of harm's way, if
it's not already too late. Collecting the six-issue miniseries.

Written by Steve Niles with art by Greg Ruth, the Freaks of the

exhibiting all weekend and hosting signings on Saturday

will be debuting his new book, BUDDY DOES SEATTLE, and if that

NEW BOOKS:
-------------------

THE PIN-UP ART OF DAN DeCARLO
By DAN DeCARLO
$18.95 Softcover
216 pp., two-colors, 6" x 8"
ISBN 1-56097-619-5
Edited by Alex Chun and designed by Jacob Covey. DeCarlo is best
known as the Archie Comics artist and the man who created every
adolescent American boys fantasy, Betty and Veronica. Before his
work for Archie, however, DeCarlo created cartoons for men's
magazines featuring girls in lingerie -and sometimes less- whom
often bared an uncanny resemblance to his more famous Riverdale
girls. This book collects those pin-ups, created between 1956 and
1963, in a stunning package presented in two-colors. As an added
bonus, many of the gags were written by Marvel Comics legend Stan
Lee!

BUDDY DOES SEATTLE
By Peter Bagge
$14.95
340 pp., B&W, 6" x 9"
ISBN 1-56097-623-3
Introduction by Everett True. These legendary stories, from the
classic first fifteen issues of Bagge's Hate comic, are a
defining icon of Seattle's early 1990s culture (the Seattle
Weekly has written, "20 years from now, when people wonder what
it was like to be young in 1990s Seattle, the only record we'll
have is Hate."), as well as Generation X in general (as seen in
such films as Kids and Pecker).  This is the first time these
hilarious stories, starring the hapless Buddy Bradley and his
cast of loser cohorts, have ever been available under one cover,
and never have they been available at such a low price (it would
have cost at least three times as much to read all of
these classic stories in any previous editions). Bagge's riotous
tales of the early 1990s subculture are more hilarious now than
ever, find out why he has been praised by R. Crumb, Matt
Groening, John Kricfalusi, Publishers Weekly, Entertainment
Weekly and many more. Comedy genius.

R. CRUMB SKETCHBOOK Vol. 10: JUNE 1975 - FEB. 1977
By R. CRUMB
$19.95 Softcover
160 pp., B&W, 8" x 11"
ISBN 1-56097-633-0
R. Crumb is undoubtedly the foremost cartoonist of the latter
20th Century, and his sketchbooks - in which he has written and
drawn continually from the early 1960s to present - might rank as
his finest achievement. Fantagraphics is proud to present these
sketchbooks, in facsimile form, as a comprehensive series of
volumes that will eventually run well over 4000 pages. Volume 10,
covering mid-1975 through early 1977, is the latest and it
represents one of the more inquisitive and soul-searching periods
in this phenomenal artist's life. These sketchbooks represent, in
essence, something never before achieved in the field of art and
literature: a single, unified, organic, (and ongoing) life's
work. Even more so than the painter Frida Kahlo's drawn diaries,
Crumb's sketchbooks are, as a body of work, incomparable in their
magnitude, scope, and intensity, and therein lies their
uniqueness and value.

R. CRUMB SKETCHBOOK Vol. 10: JUNE 1975 - FEB. 1977
By R. CRUMB
$39.95 Hardcover
160 pp., B&W, 8" x 11"
ISBN 1-56097-625-X
Also available in standard hardcover, or as a signed hardcover
for $75.00!

NEW COMICS:
--------------------
LUBA #10
By Gilbert Hernandez
24-page B&W comic book, $3.50
This is an epic of farewells and broken hearts, as Gilbert ends
the LUBA series on an appropriately final note. Not to be missed.

THE COMICS JOURNAL #265
192-page B&W and color magazine, $9.95
The latest issue of the recently revamped magazine turns its
attention to one of the greatest cartoonists of the 20th century:
the legendary William Steig, creator of Shrek! This issue also
features an interview with the cartoonist Eric Shanower (creator
of the Image series Age of Bronze), and a profile of cult-
favorite British cartoonist Chris Reynolds, written by famed
graphic novelist Seth!

DEADPAN #2
By David Heatley
32-page full-color comic,$5.95
Don't let the "#2" confuse you - this is Heatley's first comic
from Fantagraphics, and it's a stunning, oversized, full-color
one-shot. It contains multiple stories, including bizarre and
disturbing dream comics, the 5-page "Portrait of My Dad," the 15-
page "My Sexual History," and more. This is Heatley's most
revealing and personal work to date. Heatley's work has
previously been seen in McSWEENEY's and KRAMER's ERGOT, amongst
others.

BLOOD ORANGE #4
By various artists, edited by Chris Polkki
48-page black and white comic, $5.95
Comics anthology junkies seeking their latest fix need look no
further than Blood Orange #4, with exclusive new stories by Brian
Ralph ("Reggie-12"), Lark Pien ("Long Tail Kitty"), Tobias Tak
("Upside Down"), Rebecca Dart ("Rabbithead") and Ted May
("Orchid"). NOTE: This is the final 48-pp. issue before the
anthology moves to an expanded, serialized format beginning in
spring 2005. Covers by Lark Pien.

------------------------

well it should be. This is a Catcher in the Rye for its
generation, an observant character study and proof of what our
humble medium is capable of, in the right hands.

Archie Comics Newsletter #40, February, 2005

THERE'S SOMETHING VERY DIFFERENT ABOUT THIS MONTH'S BETTY &
VERONICA SPECTACULAR #69

LAUGH DIGEST HAS REACHED ISSUE #200 - IT'S AN IMPORTANT EVENT IN
RIVERDALE

Read all about these and the other February Archie issues in
COMICS COMING OUT IN FEBRUARY below.

Dear Reader,
Looking for answers to your Groundhog Day questions? You've come
to the right spot! We have all the 411 on February 2, the
Groundhog Day Holiday, and how they've been celebrating it in
Punxsutawney, PA since 1886. The only thing we don't know is why
we still have school on such an important Holiday!
Punxsutawney Phil is the only true weather forecasting
groundhog. The others are just impostors.
There has only been one Punxsutawney Phil. He has been
making predictions for over 118 years!
Punxsutawney Phil gets his longevity from drinking
"groundhog punch," a secret recipe. Phil takes one sip every
summer at the Groundhog Picnic and it magically gives him seven
more years of life.
On February 2, Phil comes out of his burrow on Gobbler's
Knob - in front of thousands of followers from all over the world
- to predict the weather for the rest of winter.
According to legend, if Punxsutawney Phil sees his
shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter weather. If he
does not see his shadow, there will be an early spring.
No! Phil's forecasts are not made in advance by the
Inner Circle. After Phil emerges from his burrow on February 2,
he speaks to the Groundhog Club president in "Groundhogese"(a
language only understood by the current president of the Inner
Circle). His proclamation is then translated for the world.
The celebration of Groundhog Day began with
Pennsylvania's earliest settlers. They brought with them the
legend of Candlemas Day, which states, "For as the sun shines on
Candlemas Day, so far will the snow swirl in May..."
Punxsutawney held its first Groundhog Day in the 1800s.
The first official trek to Gobbler's Knob was made on February 2,
1887.
So the story goes, Punxsutawney Phil was named after
King Phillip. Prior to being called Phil, he was called Br'er
Groundhog.

We remind you once again readers, copying this information for
school projects is forbidden!

Everyone at Archie Comics wishes you a GREAT February!
