SUBMISSIONS
-----------
To submit an article, review, column, etc. to our Emag, simply
Email it to the editor at: ComicBkNet@aol.com   You must include
your REAL name and a valid Email address in order to be published
in this Emag. Sorry, we do not accept anonymous columns.  The
weekly deadline is 7:00 PM Eastern Time on Thursday - NO
EXCEPTIONS!  Late submissions are held over for the following
week.

Reviews of mainstream books are welcome and we encourage reviews
of indies and self published material as we feel that material
deserves more exposure to the general public.  If you write
intelligent, coherent, and timely reviews of any comic book it
will almost always be printed, so give us a shot.

Commentary on the state of the industry, and personal
observations and reflections related to comics are *most* likely
to be included in our publication.

PLEASE, no material on gaming, non-comic derived media, role
playing, collectible card games, Anime or other hobbies or
collectibles other than comic books. That also includes plugs for
web comics and web pages UNLESS they are concerned with print
comic books.  We do not promote web comics per se, only the
printed media.

SEND US YOUR WORK
-----------------
We also accept product for review purposes.  Advanced copies of
comic books will not be returned but any comic books sent to us
*will* be reviewed in the ComicBook Net Emag in the column MY
VIEW. Send material to be reviewed to:

David L. LeBlanc
84 Heather Circle
Jefferson, MA  01522-1419

Material is generally reviewed in the order received and be
advised that we work a few weeks in advance so your review may
not be in the magazine immediately.  Advanced copies are
therefore encouraged so the review will occur prior to your
product hitting the stores.

[1] On the Net                                      David LeBlanc
                                               ComicBkNet@aol.com

Welcome and thanks for stopping by.  This week marks a personal
point of achievement for yours truly.  It was exactly nine years
ago that I took over as editor of this publication. It is hard to
believe I have stuck at it that long and that the magazine has
grown and stayed as popular as it has.  We peaked out at about
1250 subscribers a few years ago when I guess there were more
people interested in getting this kind of Emag in their mail.
That peak diminished and we have settled to just about eleven
hundred Email readers for the last few years.

There are of course more who download the whole file from the
website or read it online there or at DigitalWebbing.com so we
always add a few hundred more as our best estimate of total
readers - probably around 1500. That does not include any that
are passed along.

It was a rocky start, at first we had to retrieve our existing
mailing list of about 200 readers and urge people to sign up
again if they were not getting the Emag suddenly.  The first year
or so was an effort to spread the news of what we do anywhere we
could - in the Newsgroups for example where I would post a review
and end with a brief blurb on how to find the Emag and get it in
the Email.  BBS Networks were still around but fading fast.  And
slowly, month by month, year by year, we added more and more
readers.

We also added more contributors.  Many of them are names you
recognize to this day as movers and shakers in the industry -
artists, writers, self-publishers, marketing professionals,
website reporters and other types.  I am not going to run down
the list - that happens enough at more appropriate times. But, I
will say that without the dedication and support of Ed Dukeshire,
our founder and guru, I would not have made it this far and the
E-Mag would have probably not either.

The real driving force though, is you the reader.  Though we do
not hear from you as often as we like, we know you are out there.
We have sustained a loyal readership by the average reader
spreading the word to friends of like interest; and they told
their friends, and so on, and so on . . .

Sometimes the feedback is about this editorial section being
unrelated to comics. That happens from time to time for a number
of reasons. I have in the past given instructions on stopping
spam, proper email etiquette, shared funny stories, emails,
websites, and things that happen in my life. On occasion, I will
write a pure opinion piece, not often, just a few times a year.
I may or may not say up front that you may not want to read it,
but that is the case with any of my editorials.  There are many
people who never read a single one, that is not why they read the
emag. On those occasions when it is an opinion topic and some
strongly disagree, I will get one or two angry letters lecturing
me on the purpose of the Emag, which is not to editorialize on
politics, sex or religion. I never get angry letters telling it
is not the purpose of the Emag to tell jokes, or point to web
sites or news stories not related to comics, or to tell a story
about what happened on my latest business trip, or urge the
readers to seek out and thank the people who give their time to
protect and serve - police and medical personnel, firefighters,
and especially the military. I repeat, I NEVER get angry letters
about those off topic subjects.  That is because the complaint is
not that I am off-topic; though that is always the clearly stated
objection. We both know it is that the writer has an opposite
point of view and wants a forum for rebuttal. Sorry, I just
choose to rant on occasion and if that is not what you want to
read than skip the editorial. If you drop the emag because you
disagree with what I have to say in one column out of 50 or so
then that is your choice. The rest of you, don't let my thoughts
dissuade you from supporting the many contributing columnists or
getting the information you need in the news or hype sections.
After all, opinions are like navels, everybody has one.

Right now, tell your friends about these new comics on the racks:

Every year at this time I reaffirm my commitment to the mission
that started this effort.  I've said it many times - the purpose
of the Emag is to promote comic books and the people that create
them.  By providing the forum for interviews, reviews, news,
statistics, and some fun stuff too we serve the mission in our
own humble way. The fact we are still going strong says the
mission is proper and to some measure we are still succeeding.
One of the first things I wrote as editor was my commitment to
the job.  I said I would keep doing it as long as it continued to
be fun.  If it ever became more work than pleasure, I would hang
it up.

I'm still here!   *8^)

ZOMBIES ATTACK DIGITAL WEBBING PRESENTS!

Digital Webbing Presents celebrates 3rd Anniversary with an
extra-sized, all-zombie issue!

HAVERHILL, MA, February 16, 2005 - It's been three years since
Digital Webbing launched the first issue of its Internet
collaborative anthology series known as DIGITAL WEBBING PRESENTS
(DWP) against widespread doubt and uncertainty.  Defying all
odds the publisher still thrives, and this March will release
their extra-sized, 3rd anniversary issue: DIGITAL WEBBING
PRESENTS #21!

DIGITAL WEBBING PRESENTS #21 is a full-color, 40-page
anniversary, all-zombie issue . filled to the brim with fun and
fright by some of the best talents the industry has to offer;
with an amazing cover provided by legendary horror artist,
Bernie Wrightson!

"What an amazing three years this has been," said Digital
Webbing founder and Managing Editor, Ed Dukeshire. "I'd love to
take all the credit for the success, but I'd be lying if I didn't
give most of it to the amazing creators we've had over the years.
DWP is a success simply because of all the great talent that has
gone into it."

Some of today's most popular creators and books have their roots
in DIGITAL WEBBING PRESENTS, including Eric Powell's THE GOON,
featured in early issues of DWP and now publishing with Dark
Horse Comics.  Writer, Jason Henderson, also featured in the
pages of DWP an early story from his now wildly-popular Image
Comics series, SWORD OF DRACULA.

Both Henderson and Powell mark their return to DWP next month
with the release of DIGITAL WEBBING PRESENTS #21, each bringing
with them a frightening tale of horror and the undead!

Powell rejoins the DWP team with a contest to find the artist of
his newest short story, titled "CITIZEN ZOMBIE," and after
searching many entries, Nick Bradshaw (Army of Darkness) took
home the prize; joined by inker, Derek Fridolfs (Fantastic
Four), and colorist, Rhys Yorke!

While Henderson returns with "SWORD OF DRACULA: COOLER HEADS,"
with artist Terry Pallot, telling the story of a teenaged Ronnie
Van Helsing; the girl who would grow to one day lead an army of
men in her battle against the deadly Dracula!

"Digital Webbing has been a key part in the development of SWORD
OF DRACULA," said Henderson. "We had the prequel in DWP before
SWORD OF DRACULA #1 came out, and now we're returning to get a
closer look at [the characters]. I was so excited to get to do
this story here. In my mind this is what DWP is for: a jam
session where we can plunk away at what's around the corner."

Along with "CITIZEN ZOMBIE" and "SWORD OF DRACULA," other stories
in this extra-sized spectacular include:

"REMEMDIUM," by writer Kel Nuttall (Nothingface) and painted by
James Woodward (Crazy Mary), is the tale of human beings facing
extinction at the hands of the living dead, so a team of
scientists examine a truly horrific solution.

"ICEBERG," by writer Mike Imboden (Warmageddon) and artwork by
Fathih Hasbudak and L. Jamal Walton (Warmageddon), A couple of
stowaways on a luxury ocean liner's maiden voyage set in motion
a series of events that nobody will ever forget.

"LEASE ON LIFE," by writer CG Kirby (Freakshow) and illustrated
by Ryan Sergeant (Dreah), is the story of a man who gets a new
lease on life when zombies turn the world upside down; and he's
not exactly sad to say goodbye to his old life and past sins
either!

"A three-year run for any book is tremendous in this market, but
for a [initially] black and white independent anthology to tough
it out is amazing," said Kirby.  "DWP has given creators an
outlet for their projects and allowed them to showcase their
talents. And now we've graduated to color! DWP is truly the
little book that could."

DIGITAL WEBBING PRESENTS #21 ships in early March, featuring 40
full-color pages for only $3.50. The comic can currently be
ordered/reordered through Diamond Comics' PREVIEWS catalog (item
code: OCT04 2622).

For more information on this and other Digital Webbing projects,

IDW Presents The Return Of Jon Sable, Freelance In Bloodline

Mike Grell's  Classic Merc-for-Hire Kicks The Door Down For 2005

San Diego, CA (February 14, 2005) Jon Sable, Freelance. Those
three words are enough to thrill the heart of comic readers
everywhere. Now one of the most enjoyed and respected characters
of the 1980s is back, this time with comics' most innovative
publishers - IDW Publishing.

Series creator and comic legend Mike Grell has once again taken
up the tale of his most popular character, providing both story
and art for Bloodline, an all-new six issue miniseries.

This time, though, Jon Sable is not quite at the top of his game.
Haunted by his dark past and with his career in a tailspin, Sable
signs on to prevent the assassination of a foreign national
visiting terror-torn Manhattan. But who are the killers REALLY
after? And why? And even if he finds out, can Sable stop them?

"Getting back to Jon Sable has been a personal goal of mine for a
long time," series creator Mike Grell noted. "Every day, the
newspapers and networks have been telling us stories that seem as
though they have been ripped from the pages of Jon Sable,
Freelance. It's about time Jon got in and got his hands dirty
once again."

Joining Grell on Jon Sable, Freelance: Bloodline will be original
series' editor Mike Gold, who had also collaborated with Grell on
such projects as DC Comics' Green Arrow and Image Comics'
Shaman's Tears. John Workman and Lovern Kindzierski will be
joining the team as letterer and color artist, respectively. All
six issues will sport original cover paintings by Mike Grell.

"Along with GrimJack, bringing back Jon Sable, Freelance has
been a dream come true and we're grateful for all the support our
fans have been giving us," Gold said, "We're honored that Ted
Adams, Chris Ryall and our friends at IDW have given us this
opportunity; they've got the best production values in the
business and we're taking full advantage. Readers will really
see the difference in Bloodline."

Mike Grell's Jon Sable, Freelance: Bloodline is a six-issue
miniseries, with issue #1 debuting in April 2005. Released
monthly, each 32-page issue will feature full-color art and
retail for $3.99.

IDW PUBLISHING is a division of Idea + Design Works, LLC, a
revolutionary creative service company with a wide range of
clients. Among their best-selling titles are CBS's CSI: Crime
Scene Investigation; Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith's 30 Days of
Night: Bloodsucker Tales; Konami's Metal Gear Solid; and
GrimJack: Killer Instinct. Columbia Pictures has optioned the
movie rights to 30 Days of Night, with Sam Raimi attached to
produce. Konami is producing a video game based on CVO: Covert
Vampiric Operations. Dimension Films has optioned the movie
rights to Wake The Dead and Hyde. Paramount Pictures has optioned

Gainesville, Florida, February 12, 2005: Alternative Comics has
announced that May 2005 will see the release of the third volume of
Graham Annable's hilarious Hickee anthology, and that June 2005 will
bring James Kochalka's eagerly awaited The Cute Manifesto collection.

Hickee
Volume 3, Number 1
Graham Annable, Paul Harvey Brown, Scott Campbell, Razmig Mavlian,
Nathan Stapley, Vam, Joe White
b&w; 32 pgs; 6.625" x 10.25"; $2.95; ISBN: 1-891867-83-0
May 2005
This anthology consists of really funny stories by tremendously
talented cartoonists. Each strip flows beautifully from panel to
panel, demonstrating an amazing aptitude for expression and
nuance. The animation backgrounds of the contributing cartoonists
really shine through impeccable pacing of the strips. What
started out loosely as a group of friends hanging around in San
Francisco coffee shops on Sunday afternoons, Hickee has become a
major contributor to the underground comics scene. Initiated by
Grickle creator Graham Annable, he knew that the humorous talents
of this gang could find a larger audience through comics. Hickee
is the vehicle that ties all their Sunday afternoon sessions
together -- stories that emerge from doodles or from musings
about life -- resulting in a raw comic book. No censoring, no
test audience, and no laugh track. Made to entertain themselves,
Hickee will undoubtedly draw you into their world and provide
lots of laughs along the way. In stores May 2005.

The Cute Manifesto
By James Kochalka
2-color; 168 pages; 8" x 8"; $19.95; ISBN 1-891867-73-3
June 2005
James Kochalka's "Dianetics". A powerful mixture of philosophy
and comics that can literally change your life forever. In a
dangerously uncertain world, Kochalka plots a theoretical path to
happiness. Collecting his most intensely thoughtful work,
Kochalka tackles all of the big issues... comics and art, birth
and death, technology and joy, and everything in between.
Included are The Horrible Truth about Comics, Reinventing
Everything parts 1 and 2, Sunburn, The Cute Manifesto and even
Kochalka's famous "Craft is the Enemy" essays. James Kochalka has
won and has been nominated for many prestigious awards including
several Ignatz awards, the Firecracker Alternative Books award,
the Eisner award, and several Harvey awards. In stores June
2005.
