SPOILER WARNING:
THE FOLLOWING COLUMN MAY REVEAL SIGNIFICANT PORTIONS OF THE PLOTS
OF SOME COMIC BOOKS, OR THE ENTIRE STORY. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Name: The Walking Dead #15
Publisher: Image
Creative Force: Kirkman, Ablard, Rathburn
Price: $2.95
Overviewed by: Paul Dale Roberts, Publisher -
www.jazmaonline.com Comments:  The Walking Dead #15 was very
intense right from the start, as one person is being told to hold
the zombie's head up for a clear shot.  There is so much tragedy
that is happening. The survivors of this horrid reality not only
have to deal with zombies, but they deal with such things like a
couple having a suicide pact.  This couple felt they could be
together forever. Our heroes of this story need sleep, but some
of them can't sleep, there is too much going on.  Tyreese has
seen the horror and is traumatized from it.  He is mentally
troubled and is acting like everything is okay, he even smiles.
A man with no emotion, who has become calloused.  It was
horrifying to see Tyreese surrounded by zombies and taken down,
as he fought for his life.  Even with the horror that is
happening, a couple find time to become intimate on a barbershop
chair at this prison that they hide out in.   There are zombies
everywhere and whenever they have to fight through a crowd of
zombies, my heart races fast.  I still can't get the image of
Tyreese being engulfed by the undead.  Another image that will
stay with me, is when Shane rises from the grave, gets a lecture
and then is shot in the head...yikes!  I don't know if I can take
anymore of this, it's giving me the willies.

Name: Captain Canuck: Unholy War #3 of 3
Publisher: Comely Comix
Written by: Riel Langlois
Drawn by: Drue Langlois
Price: $2.50

Comments:  Wow!  After reading Captain Canuck: Unholy War #3 of
3, I must say that there is a lot going on with the Canadian
Security Intelligence Service in Vancouver.  I, the reader
stepped into this reality of this facility and could see all of
the very cool weapons and gadgets that Captain Canuck will be
using, like the vibration lock pick, flash-bang grenades, his
mask with thermal imaging and even some common pepper spray!  I
was surprised to see that the ATF was also involved in the case
of coke for weapons.  This is a lot like the Contra scandal
during President Reagan's term in office.   It was a blast to
watch Captain Canuck in some intriguing stealth night maneuvers.
Captain Canuck may not have any super powers, but his gadgets
help immensely.  I love the humor when Captain Canuck teased the
gadget lady and called her Gadget Girl and she wanted to be
referred to as a woman!  I did the same thing with my ex-wife
Patricia, I created a character named Jazma Girl that is
actually her and till this day, she wanted to be called Jazma
Woman.  Oh well!   The Unholy is really trying the patience of
Captain Canuck and I sat on the edge-of-my-seat watching Captain
Canuck go mano-2-mano with Mister Gold.  They traded a lot
insults which made the fight even more interesting.  Mister Gold
tells all, as he tells Captain Canuck that the weapons will be
used for the freedom fighters in Basque.  Then hearing Gold
compare his life of hardship to the good life that Captain Canuck
had.  Some terrifying moments as Gold fires the rocket launcher
at Captain Canuck and the good Captain takes Gold down with a
flash-bang grenade, using a long distance throw!  I was in awe
seeing the original Captain Canuck meet the new Captain Canuck
and learning that the original Captain Canuck is a time traveler.
I wonder if he ever came across Dr. Who?   How strange that Tom
Evans of the new Captain Canuck's reality did not become Captain
Canuck.   It was stranger yet, on how the original Captain Canuck
changed the timeline by helping the Micmacs fight off some
Vikings, causing them to win the battle, when in our reality,
they didn't win the battle.  Because of this, it caused
repercussions on our time stream, creating alternate timelines.
In the original Captain Canuck's reality, after the 1969 landing
on the moon, things in the space program moved fast, while in the
new Captain Canuck's time line, after 1969, the space program
moved  at a snail's pace.  Now Gold is in prison blind, I wonder
what he will accomplish from his new place of confinement!  This
story was moving at a fast pace and I loved every minute of it!

Comments:  There is so much going on in Children of the Grave!
First the mystery on why were all of the graves emptied?  Were
there people stealing the bodies and eating them?  I loved Team
Orphan - Special Forces Team, the characters are well toned and
defined, I felt like I knew them.  I see Drake and Reese were
also once Army Rangers.  I was once with OPFOR (Opposing Forces)
in the Army and had orders for the 82nd Airborne and Special
Forces, but didn't complete my orders for this assignment due to
a tragedy that occurred in my family, but watching Lt. Michael
"LT" Drake, Sergeant Reginald "Shiv" Reese and Sergeant Pedro
"Lil" Pet Rodriguez, makes me regret not going into the Special
Forces.  The horror of the enemy, that being Colonel Akbar Assan
is sheer terrifying, a man who instigated genocide.  Now the
orders to kill Assan and his troops have been given.  For this
assignment, it will take radio silence and Team Orphan will be
on their own.  The LT is having sleep loss because he must plan
out this mass assassination mission.  Assan has a few cards up
his sleeve, since he has the legendary "Desert Jackals" on his
side. I must commend the way you give the history of Assan in
this story, it made it easier for me to hate this guy.  A guy
right up there with Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden!   The
paranormal runs deep in this story as one of the soldiers
exclaims that he had a dream of seeing the children coming back
as zombies.  How can 3 top-notch soldiers deal with not only
Assan and his soldiers, but also the children of the grave? Well,
Reese is good with the blades and he had better be fast, because
he will need all the blades that he can muster up!  I love the
humor in this dramatic story, like when Team Orphan does some
trading insults, like...the bogeyman is your mama!  This is going
to be one scary story, we have zombie children that makes the kid
in the movie Hide n' Seek look like a cub scout, we also have a
maniac like Assan out there!  Team Orphan is definitely going to
be busy! Now the enemy is getting the dreams and they think Allah
is delivering the message!    Children of the Grave is a
combination of Rambo meets the Night of the Living Dead meets
Saddam Hussein on amphetamines, fast paced horrific action! There
is no way you can put this comic book down, until you are
completely finished, then you just might pick it up again to
reread it!  Wow!

Comments:  Ashtanyaka aka Fishnet Angel aka Jane Doe aka
'once-a- man'  is one top notch super heroine and goddess!  The
talking intelligent bugs in this story gave me the willies.
Then I really got some shivers seeing a beheading that is related
to the justice of the gods!  Jane Doe aka Fishnet Angel has lost
her memory and now she is having dreams and visions, that gave
her glimpses of her past life.   It must be a heavy ordeal for
Fishnet Angel to try and figure out who she is.  Then if that is
not enough, she is pregnant.  I had a laugh when Fishnet Angel
receives her fishnets and she thought she might be a prostitute
and discovers through a newspaper article, that she actually
might be a heroine that saved LA!  Fishnet Angel's obsessed
lover is a scary person, he wants to keep her confined, so he can
have her forever, which reminded me of the movie "Boxing Helena".
Now the city is infested with those intelligent bug creatures
and I can only wonder what will happen in the next installment
of Fishnet Angel!  Fishnet Angel is entertainment taken to the
next level!  Most incredible!

Explorer signing off until next time....now let's get a good
look at 3 other realities that caught my attention...Slayers, The
Wall Flower and Excalibur!

Name: Slayers
Publisher: Manga Novels
Creator: Hajime Kanzaka
Price: $7.99
Comments:  This story is about Lina - a genius sorceress and
invincible warrior.  But this lady needs some cold cash and she
needs it fast.  In her hunt for money, she finds some stolen loot
and figures that the thieves won't mind her sharing.  In the
booty that she finds, she also finds a hidden secret, a secret so
grave that it may change her life around completely. Will her
great powers as a sorceress and invincible warrior be able to
protect her from this secret?  Average Manga artwork done in
black and white.   Added Note: Make sure to check out Warriors
Tao by Tokyopop.  The book is priced at $9.99, the creator is
Shinya Kuwahara and it's all about the survival of the fittest.
Toma, the hero of the story must learn the hard way outside of his
classroom on how to be strong!

Name: The Wall Flower
Publisher: Del Rey - Ballantine Books
Creator: Tomoko Hayakawa
Price: $10.95
Comments:  These 4 fabulous guys must transform an average high
school girl, if they want to continue living rent free in her
aunt's luxurious mansion.  Meet the girl, her name is Sunako
Nakahara.  She is a fashion hopeless girl in Japan.  She doesn't
mind living the life of a hermit and sit around all day watching
horror movies.  She probably has The Ring, Hide and Seek, Saw,
Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the Friday the 13th series and the
Suicide Club DVDs in her collection.  Just a hunch.  Those are
my tastes on some good horror movies, so if she is a horror
movie buff, I would guess she would have these (smile).  Onto
the overview.  Now things get scary, the boys find a ghost in
the mansion's basement and the ghost at some point of time
possesses Sunako and when this happens, it's not a pretty picture
for the boys, because the possessed Sunako locks the boys up in
the mansion's dungeon!  Art is over-the-top Manga done in black
and white!

Name: Excalibur #9
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Creative Force: Claremont, Lopresti, Adams
Price: $2.99
Comments:  Right in the beginning the Auschwitz Nazi death camp
is depicted and the words that over a million lives were lost is
a gloomy way to start this story.  A history of mankind that
will never be forgotten and falls into mankind's other tragedies
such as 9/11.  We see how the internal power of Magneto is
brought about that originates from these Nazi death camps.  We
can understand how Magneto became Magneto.  His power is
released with full fury.  When the death of a loved one is in the
focus, Magneto cannot be a mere mortal.  It is interesting on how
he took Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch under his wings and
created his own team and how he started to believe that Homo
Sapiens Superior was the next step on the evolutionary ladder!
Reading this story, I felt like I was in Magneto's skin!

THE DARKNESS / SUPERMAN #1
Story - Ron Marz
Pencils - Tyler Kirkham
Inks - Matt "Batt" Banning
Colors - John Starr
Graphic Design - Robin Spehar, Dreamer
Letters - Spehar & Dreamer's Dennis Heisler
Cover by Marc Silvestri, Tyler Kirkman, Batt, John Starr
Ink Assists - Tom Bar-or & Don Ho

So how do you make an interesting story with these two icons of
their respective companies? Does the Darkness work against
Superman? How about a third person who can hurt or weaken the
big red S; like Metallo! The set up is simple. Jackie Estacado
has decided to set up business in Metropolis. The story opens as
he receives a rather violent message from the opposition, Mr.
Grasso, by way of Metallo. They show each other their stuff and
pretty much declare war.  But not much happens in Superman's
town without him finding out about it;  or for that matter hi
ace reporter wife Lois Lane. The confrontation between all these
players brings a dramatic scene which leaves u wondering if
anyone will stand by next issue.

I like this story for a number of reasons. marz knows the
characters and writes them to type. He bothers to show
interaction with the supporting cast and brings new readers up
to speed on the major points about both worlds from two
companies. It is a believable story and adding Metallo gives the
edge we need to believe Superman might not win.  The art is the
hugh standard you would expect on such a project. All the
characters have the look we know from regular series. Superman,
Jackie and Metallo are larger than life characters that are
portrayed in certain scenes for the raw power they all hold. I
am impressed so far and will follow this one closely. This is
how a company crossover should be done!

WITCHBLADE #82
"Witch Hunt" part 3 of 6
Story - Ron Marz
Pencils - Michael Choi
Inks - Sal Regla
Colors - Brian Buccellato
Design & Letters - Robin Spehar & Dreamer Design's Dennis
 Heisler
Cover by Greg Land, Jay Leisten & Justin Ponsor

You can't mistake a Greg Land cover, especially when there is a
beautiful woman on it. I miss his work on SOJOURN. That is not a
slight at the rest of the art. The whole issue is well drawn and
laid out from the fight with a demon to the eventual meeting
with Magdalena and the shifting scenes between.  The colors
particularly set the moods to accent the detailed pencil and ink
work.

This is essentially an action story filled with supernatural
beings, weapons and secret plots. Sara has the Witchblade which
is one of the "thirteen". A secret group of priests are behind
an attack on her and only the intervention of a strange man who
seems to come and go unseen stops the attack. Sara is still not
recovered from her recent coma and after the commotion heads
home. But there is no rest for the weary as she has another
visitor, Magdalena. The mystery deepens as we see things from
both sides but not enough to get the whole story yet. Both Sara
and her adversaries are determined to get their way. It is going
to be a bumpy ride.

LARA CROFT TOMB RAIDER #49
"Vendetta"
Writer - James Bonny
Penciler - Tyler Kirkham
Pencil Assists - Matt Merhoff
Inker - Sal Regla
Colorist - Tyson Wengler
Design & Letters - Robin Spehar & Dreamer Design's Dennis
 Heisler
Cover - Adam Hughes

Not having followed this series, or the movies or video games I
came to the subject with a fresh perspective. What I found was a
fun comic with action, adventure, humor and terrific art. What
more could you ask for?

Lara is of course an archaeologist who travels the world in
search of artifacts and finds adventure. This time she is in the
Brazilian rainforest on the tip from an email from a friend. He
claims to have found an ancient Aztec temple which is not where
you would find one. She has to go investigate and of course it
isn't too long before she smells a rat. In fact it is a trap set
by her mortal enemy, J. Bradley Aulgood.  He has devised his own
"temple of doom" and has enlisted the aid of Lady Jasmine to
seal Lara's fate if the saw blades and tiger don't get her.
Since you must have seen the ads for issue #50 by now, you
figure she gets out of it. The fun is the journey to get there.

This is an action comic and the art team knows how to set the
pace. The villains are delightfully devious plotting and waiting
as Lara goes through trap after trap. Once Jasmine joins in the
action gets fast and furious. Aulgood is the typical caricature
of the mastermind with a plan, including a double cross. The
ending is both satisfying and comical. The art is fluid and
realistic, always nice when you have two women go at each other.
But it is deeper than that. The settings, the panels placement,
everything has a polish that makes the whole book shine.  This
issue is a perfect example of how a one shot adventure can be
done.

WANTED #6
Writer - Mark Millar
Pencils and inks - J.G. Jones
Colors - Bongotone's Paul Mounts
Letters - Robin Spehar and Dennis Heisler
Cover - J.G. Jones
Flashback sequences pencilled and inked by Dick Giordano
MATURE Readers

This is a world where the bad guys took over.  How they did it
was pretty ingenious. After killing all the heroes they remade
the world with an amazing machine, so that no one but themselves
would ever know their bloody war had happened. In this final
issue the protagonist, Wesley, meets his supposedly "dead"
father who explains all this and more.  Wesley has been in a war
all his own against some of the other villains and now his
father reappears to explain what went on in those years before
he came into his own. It is an interesting story as he was never
very far and even watched while invisible. But he could not
interfere as Wesley was bullied and pushed around all his life,
without the father he needed to make him strong. In the end
Wesley remembers little things and realizes the story is true.
But now his dad has one request, the final part of Wesley's
training before he takes his place as the number one man, the
greatest assassin in the Fraternity of supervillains. But can he
do it? Will he?

It is a fitting ending to a fast paced series. Millar built up
the action to get us to this meeting which at first could seem
like some new plot to Wesley. The flash back to the super powers
war and the erasing of the history serves to fill in the readers
on the last bits of what has gone before. In fact it makes this
volume a decent stand alone book worth reading on its own. One
small complaint is the last panel. It does not spoil the story
but it is gratuitous and in your face for its own sake, in my
opinion. The art is impeccable with Giordano's work blending in
nicely with Jones' and Mounts'. It is no wonder earlier issues
had to be reprinted. If you like it graphic and tense then this
is worth getting to try. You'll likely be looking for the
earlier issues or a collected trade when it comes out.
