Writer/Ad Coordinator Vince Brusio is the designated editorial writer for Previews' "The Splash Page" which is our source material Turning Japanese With Manga Month! It is one of the most prolific formats you'll see in today's comic shops. Manga has climbed the ladder to stand toe-to-toe with super-hero comics, and it's not standing still to look back on its ascension. Manga has shown that it has a right-hand seat in the Western comics market, and many long-time readers are now seeing that what was once thought a "fad" has now become a staple in the comics shop. How did it happen? How did Japanese manga become so big that we're now seeing the "Japanization" of children's entertainment as well? Simple. The art form is versatile. There's manga for men, manga for women, manga for kids, and even sub-genres of manga for people who like to see lassies fight angry tentacled monsters. In Japan, manga became a primary source for mass market entertainment. After World War II, with the absence of movie theaters, manga comics became prolific because of the inexpensive printing and distributing costs. Manga was soon in demand from each gender, and every age group. And now the same trend has got a toe-hold in Western comics culture. Manga has shown it can be a canvas for virtually any artistic expression. And with that ability to adapt to our many tastes for entertainment, we once again celebrate Manga Month here at Previews, and invite you to see what we're gushing over in both the Previews catalog as well as our new Mega Manga catalog. One publisher we've seen embrace manga from the beginning has been Dark Horse. For years, Dark Horse has been offering the Japanese version of Garfield with What's Michael for general readers. The Horse continues the humor by offering What's Michael? Volume 10: Sleepless Nights TP in Previews this month. For those who like their manga with more of a bite, we urge you to check out stories of crimes and ensuing punishment in Samurai Executioner Volume 6 TP. More blood flow can be smelled in this month's Blade of the Immortal #101, and in the Blade of the Immortal trade paperbacks you can find in the Mega Manga catalog. Of course you'll find other titles equally entertaining from publishers like ADV Films. But we think you'll also want to turn your attention to Tokyopop this month as they're continuing to offer some of the hottest titles fans rave about in chat rooms. For instance, the mayhem in Battle Royale continues this month, as it does in Yukiru Sugisaki's D.N.Angel Volume 8. But if you're also curious about what's considered by many to be the best- selling shojo manga in America, we urge you to check out Natsuki Takaya's Fruits Basket Volume 9. Of course, the faithful always want to know what's new from Viz each month, and we're happy to say that expectations will be satisfied once fans check out Hiromu Arakawa's Fullmetal Alchemist Volume 1 TP. But if it's the heartbeat of manga you want to monitor, you don't need to look anywhere else than in the features, news, and columns of Animerica, and the world's most popular manga storylines featured in Shonen Jump! Where else can you find Yu-Gi-Oh! and Hikaru No Go all in one place? Have fun browsing through these titles and more that you'll find listed this month in both Previews and Mega Manga! Ultra Creators Stick To Girls! Evidently, the Luna brothers know a lot about how women.. These are the same guys who recently gave us the smash it mini-series Ultra. It came out of nowhere. Caught everyone by surprise. We hadn't seen a girl drama like this since Terri Moore gave us Strangers in Paradise. Before you knew it, the Luna Bros. were the new buzz word bouncing around the water cooler. It seems Ultra wasn't just a flash in the pan, either. Image Comics has announced this month that the Luna Bros. are back again with Girls #1. Clearly, these guys aren't taking many coffee breaks. They're taking this comic thing pretty seriously. You may be one of many asking, "Who are these guys?" And you're probably asking this because you've seen Ultra, and were impressed to the point where the mention of the Luna Bros. turned on your radar. Bottom line: these guys have got talent, and they're turning heads everywhere. They've been writing and drawing comics since they were kids, but people started paying attention to the two after they contributed some pinups to Blade of the Immortal #95 and Invincible #17. Ultra caught everyone's eye because it was a super-hero comic book cocktail, mixed with romance and satire. Girls #1 is going to make Ultra look like a warm-up. Interested to see how one woman can turn a man's life upside- down? Look for Girls #1 from Image Comics in the Premiere section of Previews Brian Pulido Proves He Can Still "Hack" It! In 2003, fans of slasher flicks were ecstatic as Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees locked glove and machete in the long-awaited Freddy vs. Jason. Then, Leatherface made his return in the remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Well, fans can rejoice again as Avatar Press gears up to release comic adaptations of all three properties. Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre will all be hitting the world of comics harder than the victims of this unholy trinity hit the ground! The three books, all written by horror comic legend Brian Pulido, will feature new stories bases on the established characters and situations. All three books will ship in time to be in stores on Friday, May 13th. Picking up soon after the events of the film, both Freddy and Jason have returned to their "places of power" to reap what was sown in the event of their crossover. In Springwood, parents pass martial law to make Freddy's story fall into forgotten legend. Without fear, Freddy is powerless. But, a rebellious young journalist is determined to reveal the creepy little town's secret! Meanwhile, Jason has returned to terrorize those who enter Crystal Lake, but he doesn't know that Laura Upland - armed with a paramilitary group - is out to rid her newly inherited land of it curse once and for all! Finally, the infamous massacre in Texas crosses paths with escaped cons and their lady-friends! The group happens to come upon the Hewitt family General Store. But thoughts of robbery disappear when they see they've entered a world of terror and agony! Look for Nightmare on Elm Street Special #1, Friday the 13th Special #1, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre Special #1 from Avatar Press in the Comics section of Previews! Practice Makes Perfect! For all of you aspiring Manga artists out there, the best-selling How to Draw Manga series from Graphic-Sha is back with two new volumes! How to Draw Manga: Computones Volume 2 assists you with depicting characters. This volume focuses on the human form as subject matter, and the tonal values that relate to that subject. Topics include dynamic tone to add drama to a character, lighting effects, and methods of portrayal for characterization. In addition, accompanying this volume is a valuable CD-ROM with over 140 digital tones and effects for use with Adobe Photoshop and Elements, as well as with Jasc Paint Shop Pro. Next comes How to Draw Manga: Ninja & Samurai Portrayal, a volume that focuses on the portrayal of characters central to historical Manga. Ever wonder how to wield a katana correctly? Or what exactly is the difference between samurai ceremonial garb and traditional armor? Well, look no further because this guide is dedicated exclusively to drawing the Samurai and Ninja of the Ancient Orient. If you're a struggling artist with a killer historical Manga story, then let Naho Fukagai and Team Esaka present you with an easy-to-follow format that'll help make you an expert! Both books are translated completely into English and can be found exclusively within the International section of Previews! The Corps Will Be With You...Always! In a universe plagued with sickness, the cure was always the Green Lantern Corps. These were selfless individuals who put the greater good above their own needs, and would sacrifice themselves without hesitation if it meant saving lives and protecting the innocent. Much has been written about these freedom fighters, and it started with Larry Niven's Ganthet's Tale, which would lead to the formation of the Green Lantern Corps (GLC). From there, Gerard Jones expanded on the structure of the GLC, and further changed readers' perceptions of the Guardians from a group of "benevolent little blue men" to a society with motivations different from Earthlings. And the more we learned about the mythos, the more we've wanted to toy with it. The fans who are dedicated to preserving the history of the Corps, and who want to expand on it have taken great pains to creating informative web sites, bibliographies, fan fiction, and chat rooms. The next step, of course, would be to ponder what to do with all of this information. Do you record all the facts in a book, and then close it? Or do you act upon the information, and put the knowledge to use with the DC TCG: Green Lantern Corp Booster Display? We think you'll prefer the latter choice. After all, you'll have the tools at hand by which you can build your deck around the valiant members of the Green Lantern Corps or the sinister forces of the Anti-Matter Universe. You get to be good or evil. Adopt a split personality and have fun! Why should Hal Jordan be the only tragic story to share around the power battery? Let others talk about your own excursions. Destroy humanity with the Manhunters or bring the galaxy to its knees with the Emerald Enemies! With this 224-card expansion for the DC Comics trading card game, the possibilities are endless! Look for the DC TCG: Green Lantern Corp Booster Display from Upper Deck in the Games section of Previews! Bridge Over Troubled Water! We first saw Aspen Matthews back in the Clinton era. It was the tail end of the 1990s. To be specific, it was 1998, and the Fathom Preview Special introduced us to a cute good girl who was more at home in water than on terra firma. True, she had a terrific figure, but what helped endear her to many fans was not her body so much as her story. Her mind was like Swiss cheese. There were missing pieces. Aspen Matthews had no memories of her past before the age of 11. What was stranger was how she was discovered aboard a cruise ship that had been listed as "missing" for 10 years. Things didn't add up. But this didn't stop her from moving on with her life. She became a marine biologist, and was under the impression that the past would stay in the past. But Aspen's connection to an alien underwater race quickly snuffed out any hope of living life as a normal twenty-something. Aspen was a world unto herself. And fans of Michael Turner's Fathom soon wanted to get their hands on anything that helped shed light on the heroine. Sporatic revelations were not enough. There had to be an origin story that could be self-contained in a one-shot. Enter D.E.'s Fathom Prelude #1. A special tale that looks at the mystery of young Aspen Mathews, this one-shot is the focal point for curious eyes and speculators. It's the closest thing to a biography you'll see on Aspen. Yes, you know that she has the bone structure of a 14 year-old, with five times the lung capacity of an Olympic swimmer. And you also know that she can command the water in and around your body. But what's been kept in the closet? Who's the man behind the curtain? And will the answers give us clues to Aspen's fate? Supplemented with outstanding covers by Ale Garza, Michael Turner, Peter Steigerwald, and Jae Lee, the Fathom Prelude #1 can be found from D.E. in the Comics section of Previews! The Man Behind the Pencil! He was originally told by DC Comics that there was "no room for anyone new." But that did not stop Neal Adams from going on and becoming one of the most influential comic book artists of the 20th century. After coming into his own in the comics field (having done gigs on everything from Archie Comics to Creepy and Eerie magazines) his landmark work on Batman did away with the camp of the 1960s TV show, and put the costumed avenger in a dark brooding light that dominated the look of the character throughout the 1970s - and inspired the "Dark Knight" image for years to come. And then there was the phenomenal work with Denis O'Neil on Green Lantern-Green Arrow. The list goes on and on if we stop to talk about what Neal Adams has done in the past. But for many fans, that digression would be embraced. Welcomed. For those individuals, we say it's best that we shut up and instead point everyone to Adam's company, Continuity, and the new softcover available titled Neal Adams' Savage Sketchbook. This collectible work was designed under Neal's supervision, and it features his pencil renderings, as well as layouts and inks of his super-hero and sword-and-sorcery work. There's also rare page layouts and rough sketches, plus finished pieces -including some you've never seen before. Look for the Neal Adams' Savage Sketchbook SC from Continuity in the Comics section of Previews. ------------------------ Yahoo!
