Award-Winning Political Cartoonists Announce Northeast Slideshow
Cartoon Tour

Details:

Laugh While You Can Tour 2005

"Since the election it's not even funny anymore."

Maybe not to amateurs. But three of America's most incisive young
political cartoonists have made it their job to find the funny
side of the Patriot Act, the War on Terror, and the end of
American democracy. In slides, animation, and discussion, Tom
Hart (Hutch Owen), Tim Kreider (The Pain-When Will It End?), and
Jen Sorensen (Slowpoke), retrace our steps through the absurdist
landscape of the last four years and look to the even more
hilarious desolation ahead. An evening of outrage, catharsis, and
laughter.

Some recent quotes on the work:

"I have the cartoon 'male anorexia' on my bathroom mirror for
sixteen months. I cannot shave, pimple-scan, or floss without it.
It is I; He is me. Kreider rules."
-David Foster Wallace, author of Infinite Jest

"Tim Kreider is the unsung superhero of contemporary cartooning,
able to pierce the darkest, most clandestine corners of the
American subconscious in a single panel. He is crazy and
brilliant and funny enough to proclaim as truths the things
the rest of us are too chickenshit to say out loud."
-Myla Goldberg, author of Bee Season

"Smart and sharp"
-Get Your War On creator David Rees

"All life is a blur of Republicans and meat. Slowpoke roasts them
both over the coals... with gusto!"
-Zippy the Pinhead creator Bill Griffith

"Finally, thanks to Jen Sorensen, we have conclusive evidence
that it's actually fun to think!"
 - Barbara Ehrenreich, author of Nickel and Dimed: On (Not)
Getting by in America

"Hart's angry nonconformist Hutch Owen is a modern comics icon; a
pissed-off homeless man who stands up for idealism and represents
the individual against looming corporate hegemony. But the tales
in this collection are not angry diatribes. Instead, they mix
slapstick and verbal humor to create high-level social satire."
 -Publisher's Weekly

"It's so accurately dead-on that it's scary... an amazing
character... his refusal to become another interchangeable part
in society's machine is believable, amusing, and intensely
applicable at the same time."
 -Savant Magazine

US News & World Report and Upscale, Reggie Hudlin's new BLACK

order cut-off for BLACK PANTHER #2, which continues the "WHO IS

black superhero characters can't sell.  This reminds me of 15
years ago, when HOUSE PARTY proved the then-controversial idea
that rappers could be movie stars.  Now they're getting Oscar
nominations. Hopefully the success of the BLACK PANTHER will
expand the comic book market and strengthen the industry
overall."

Marvel is pleased to produce a Limited Edition Variant of that
launch issue.timed to go on-sale the same day as issue #2. Both
books feature phenomenal painted covers by Esad Ribic, hot off of

ZORRO RETURNS TO COMICS

This November, Zorro returns to the big screen with an all-new,
big-budget motion picture, once again starring Antonio Banderas
and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Papercutz, the mass-market division of
respected graphic novel publisher NBM, has announced plans to
publish all-new, full-color comics and graphic novels featuring
Zorro.

"The timing is perfect for Zorro's return to comics," said Terry
Nantier, Papercutz publisher. "With the excitement being created
by the upcoming film, the awareness for Zorro will be at an all
time high. Part of the Papercutz philosophy is to produce high
quality comics material featuring well-known characters, for the
ever-growing tween comics and graphic novel market."

Writer Don McGregor, who has previously written Zorro for both
comics (Topps) and comic strips (collected by Image Comics), was
the obvious choice to write the new Papercutz series. "Besides
contributing Lady Rawhide to the Zorro mythos, Don is great at
coming up with deadly new villains to pit against Zorro. In
'Scars,'- the title of the first story- we meet Lucifer Trapp and
Ripklaw - the two latest, and greatest additions to Zorro's
colorful Rogues' Gallery," reports Papercutz editor-in-chief Jim
Salicrup. "Don's devised all sorts of death traps for Zorro -
pitting him against both sadistic foes and the uncontrollable
forces of nature in the frigid but breath-taking Yellowstone
Park. All while Zorro attempts to liberate the beautiful Eulalia
Bandini from the clutches of Captain Monasterio."

Artist Sidney Lima's style combines the best elements of many top
fan-favorite superhero artists with a manga influence. This is
essential in appealing to today's discriminating young comics
fans. While maintaining the classic swashbuckling style and humor
of Zorro, Lima creates a look for Zorro that is new and
contemporary. Creating exciting fresh visuals is a Papercutz
priority!

"With the continuing success of manga graphic novels, and such
manga-sized paperbacks of popular tie-ins such as "SpongeBob
SquarePants" and "Lizzie McGuire," can there be any doubt that
Zorro will be major hit?" says Nantier. "While our Hardy Boys and
Nancy Drew graphic novels are flying out of the bookstores, the
comic book market has been a little slow to realize just how
powerful the Papercutz titles really are. With traditional comic
book sales still not what they used to be, savvy comic shop
owners know that Nancy Drew and Zorro can attract new customers.
But it only works if comic shops position our books where
potential new customers can see them."

The quarterly Zorro graphic novels will be pre-serialized in
comic book form, with the first 32 page, full-color issue coming
out in May.

WONDERCON: BONGO COMICS PANEL
SAN FRANCISCO -- The next Simpsons' Treehouse of Horror comic
will reunite two pairs of horror comics teams from the 1970s,
Bongo Comics' Bill Morrison said at a WonderCon panel on Friday.
"We actually got Marv Wolfman and Gene Colan to do a Dracula
parody with Mr. Burns cast again as Dracula," Morrison says, "and
we got Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson to do a Swamp Thing story,
which is known as 'Squish Thing,' where Homer gets engulfed in a
squishy accident and becomes a Squish Thing."
The other half of the flip-book, arriving in September, will
feature an EC parody with art by John Severin, Angelo Torres, Al
Williamson and Mark Schultz. Schultz pitched in when health
issues forced Williamson out of the project, but Williamson later
recovered and inked Schultz's pencils.
The wraparound story is by James Lloyd.
  * The Simpsons Super Spectacular is a new book featuring a
Radioactive Man story and another story featuring Simpsons
characters as super-heroes.
Ty Templeton is writing and drawing a Pie-Man story for the
first issue and is teaming with writer Chuck Dixon for the first
time on a story called "Crisis on Springfield 2," where Bart and
Millhouse go through a storm drain and come out in a strange new
world.
Ian Boothby is writing a story for the second issue called "The
League of Extraordinary Barts," where various Barts from
different dimensions come together to battle an evil Bart who
uses Professor Frink's devices in a plot to take over the world.
"It's just a good, smack-em-in-the-mouth, silly super-hero
story," Boothby said. "It's a lot of fun."
Another Boothby story involves the League of Women Voters
banning super-heroes.
  * Templeton is also working on a Simpsons Comics story.
  * Gail Simone and Mark Waid are collaborating for the first
time on a story.
"It's basically a story about revamping things that really
don't need to be revamped," Simone said. "It's called 'Maximum
Simpsons.' Lisa has written a little comics story about her
family and Hollywood gets ahold of it and decides they really got
to pump it up.
  * Simone is also working on a series of Lisa detective stories.
  * Morrison said that he is getting interest in Heroes Anonymous
as a live-action television series. "I'm getting really good
response from producers," Morrison said, adding that no new
comics are currently planned.
  * Scott Shaw! said an upcoming story in Bart Simpson Comics
will see Principal Skinner's mother insist he crack down on
Halloween costumes. He is also writing a story for Simpsons Super
Spectacular #4, a solo Senor Ding-Dong story.
  * In an upcoming Simpsons Comics issue, the Simpsons get their
own Broadway show.

BONE PC GAME
Cartoon Books and Telltale announced that Jeff Smith's Bone
will be developed for PC gaming.
"Detailed rich characters and incredibly immersive story
telling are everything to us," said Telltale's CEO Dan Connors.
"We are proud that Jeff Smith and Cartoon Books have decided that
we are the best partners to bring Bone to life in a series of PC
games. The Bone world has so much texture and depth and combines
a unique blend of superb adventure, mystery and humor -- it is a
great first license for Telltale."
"We are very impressed with the work the Telltale team has done
in the past," said Cartoon Books publisher Vijaya Iyer. "We're
confident they can bring the fun and adventure of the Bone story
to life. Bone has been a big hit with comic-book lovers
everywhere and reaching the PC market will allow even more people
to boldly go where no Bone has gone before."
Bone is also the flagship title for Scholastic's new graphic
novel imprint Graphix, which launched in February. Telltale Games
will compliment this with its first Bone PC episode.

MARVEL REVISES RATINGS SYSTEM
Marvel has announced it will institute a revised rating system on
its comics, beginning in June. The new versions of its ratings
will be the publisher's second since it withdrew from the Comics
Code Authority in 2001 and established its own, in house rating
system. Marvel's first rating system was based on the Motion
Picture Association of America system used for movies, with such
classifications as "PG" and "PG+."

Reportedly, the MPAA took umbrage at the comic book publisher
copying its system (the specific ratings used by the MPAA are
registered trademarks of the Association), forcing Marvel, in
August of 2003 to adopt the current system of "PSR, PSR +, All
Ages" and "Parental Advisory/Explicit Content."

Marvel's new system will be similar to that used by TokyoPop and
other manga publishers, starting with "ALL AGES" and then "T+"
for teen and up, followed by "PARENTAL ADVISORY" and "MAX:
EXPLICIT CONTENT."

In a statement, Marvel Publisher Dan Buckley said: "As we
continue to seek ways to expand the comic market we want to equip
our retailers with the tools for success. That starts with giving
them the confidence of knowing which books are suitable for
kids."

The definitions of the ratings are:

ALL AGES - Appropriate for readers of all ages.

T+ SUGGESTED FOR TEEN AND UP - 13+ years old Appropriate for most
readers, parents are advised they may want to read before or with
younger children.

PARENTAL ADVISORY - 15+ years old Similar to T+ Suggested for
Teen and Up, but featuring more mature themes and/or more graphic
imagery. Recommended for teen and adult readers.

MAX: EXPLICIT CONTENT - 18+ years old Most Mature Readers books
will fall under the MAX Comics banner, (created specifically for
mature content titles) MAX and Mature-themed titles will continue
to be designed to appear distinct from mainline Marvel titles,
with the "MAX: Explicit Content" label very prominently displayed
on the cover. MAX titles will NOT be sold on the newsstand, and
they will NOT be marketed to younger readers.

Ratings for the T+ and PARENTAL ADVISORY titles will move, from
under the Marvel logo in the trade dress (where they currently
appear) to the UPC code box. MAX and ALL AGES will continue to
appear at the top of the cover.

directing, it sounded like they want the film done quickly, so it
could be released on November 5th of this year.
