The life and careers of Ross Andru and Mike Esposito is to be published by HERMES PRESS in mid 2006. Consisting of interviews, first hand conversations and artwork, the book covers every aspect of Andru and Esposito's time in comic books, from their first ventures into self-publishing, their time spent working syndicate strips, the creation of the Metal Men (as told by Mike Esposito, Ross Andru & Bob Kanigher) and the duo's work at virtually every comic book company in the USA, with an emphasis of their acclaimed work at DC, where they touched virtually every major character, through to Marvel where they enjoyed a ground breaking run on Amazing Spider-Man. The book is comprised mainly of interviews with Mike Esposito. Interspersed throughout the book are comments and quotes from various people, including Ross Andru, Bob Kanigher, Gil Kane, Jim Mooney and others. Commentary is provided by Daniel Best and Mike Esposito. The list of contributors to the book include the following: Bob McLeod, Alex Saviuk, Len Wein, Josef Rubenstein, Don Perlin, Michael Netzer, Dick Ayers, Roy Thomas, Neal Adams, Dick Giordano, Jim Mooney, Jerry Bingham, Michael Dunne, Lyle Tucker, Jim Amash, D.D. Degg, Ger Apeldoorn, Joel Adams, Anthony Tollin, Al Bigley & Michael Eury. There are posthumous contributions from Don Heck, Gil Kane and Bob Kanigher. The book also has exclusive interviews with the following people: John Romita, Sal Buscema, Marty Thall, Stan Goldberg, Marv Wolfman, Nick Cuti, Dave Hunt. Tony Isabella has provided one of the books two introductions and Roy Thomas will provide the other. Michael Netzer has provided an after word and will be providing a piece of art to be used for promotional purposes - the image will be of the Metal Men and the Andru/Esposito creation Garlic Man. There is a plethora of art on offer to be used in the book. The art goes as far back as the duo's work, both together and alone, in the 1940s, through to the 1990s and includes a complete story from Heart & Soul, pages from both DC and Marvel, along with Spider-Man pages (including two pencilled only pages), World's Finest pages (Superman/Batman), Metal Men, war, romance, horror and many more. In addition Mike Esposito has also provided several previously unpublished photographs - many of these photos have only previously been seen by the Esposito family. There will also be an extensive checklist of the pairs work, both together and alone. Michael Esposito has fully authorised this book. Below are some comments from the book. Any questions then please don't hesitate to ask. I can be contacted at the following email address: snoopy967@bigpond.com or via the web-site: www.adelaidecomicsandbooks.com MARV WOLFMAN: He (Ross Andru) was also the absolute best artist in terms of space and perspective that I've ever seen in comics. His work is incredibly intelligent. JOHN ROMITA: I always thought Andru and Esposito had a special magic. DAVE HUNT: Mike (Esposito) is a down to earth kind of a guy. No pretence, very sure of himself and he is a consummate professional. SAL BUSCEMA: I was a big fan of Ross Andru. He was a great, great storyteller. GIL KANE: During Ross' best period, around the late '50s, he was probably the greatest penciller in the business. STAN GOLDBERG: Mike Esposito carried the load on my stuff and did fine; he did a great job at it. DICK GIORDANO: Ross was one of the very best storytellers in the business. GENE COLAN: If he (Ross Andru) were around today, he'd give us all a run for our money. JIM MOONEY: I inked many of Ross Andru's pages myself, and was impressed by the amount of research he did on the locales he depicted. FRANK MILLER: (in a letter to Marvel in 1978) Not since Ditko has there been a conscientious a penciler on the strip, nor one as successful in capturing the mood and style that made the strip the most popular of them all. BOB KANIGHER: Andru and Esposito were the perfect team. The Metal Men was probably the most ingenious artwork that was ever done. Ross' interpretation...was outstanding. No one has come within light years of him. COLLEEN DORAN JOINS THE IMPACT LINE Shoujo Manga Art Instruction Book Due in 2006 Impact Books, the comics and graphic novel instruction imprint from F+W Publications, announces that award-winning comics creator, Colleen Doran, has signed a one-book deal that will be released in November 2006. Girl to Grrrl Manga: How to Draw the Hottest Shoujo Manga Styles will be the central Impact release for the Fall 2006 season. "We are happy to have Colleen Doran joining our Impact line for Fall 2006," said Pam Wissman, Acquisitions Editor for Impact. "Colleen's book will cover the principle styles of shoujo manga as they apply to fantasy, science fiction, romance, historical and dramatic storytelling." Colleen Doran is one of the most respected artists working today. Her own book, A Distant Soil, is now published by Image Comics. The fourth collected volume, A Distant Soil: Coda, will premiere in May '05. Doran has worked for all of the major comic book publishers, including DC, where her most recent work, Orbiter, with Warren Ellis, received critical acclaim. Doran will also be the artist of an upcoming new series from Marvel Comics. Colleen will join an amazing roster of comics artists, writers and creators who have done, or will be doing, books for Impact, including Lea Hernandez, Dick Giordano and Peter David. Impact is also the book trade distributor of Will Eisner's acclaimed books, Comics and Sequential Art and Graphic Storytelling and Visual Narrative. "For years now, I have been ghosting art and writing on instruction books for others," said Doran, "doing drawings and research as well as consulting for publishers, so when Impact contacted me about doing my own book my own way, I jumped at the chance." Colleen is certainly no stranger to the Manga style of drawing, having been introduced to it in 1984. "In my own work, I had been using a lyrical inking style, " she said, "(plus) all kinds of elements that were very similar in appearance to manga. I was usually criticized for it and told this was NOT the way to do a comic book. But here was a comic book that had everything I liked to do, and soon I got a chance to see hundreds of other manga that were immensely popular overseas, often drawn by women. This was very inspiring to me. I have collected and studied manga ever since." Doran is especially proud of the fact that her Impact book will appeal to females. "I am very excited about this project," she said, "especially since there has never been a better time in comics for aspiring women and girl creators. Female enrollment in comic art courses used to be minimal, but now schools are reporting female enrollment of greater than 50%, many of them inspired to create comics by reading manga. After all these years, there is finally a solid market, not just for girls that read comics, but for girls that want to create them. My book will teach many practical techniques for any creator, but will be of very special interest to the increasing numbers of shuojo manga readers and cartoonists." For more details and news about Impact titles, visit www.Impact- Books.com Impact Books is an imprint of F+W Publications, Inc., a special interest publisher who targets hobbyists and enthusiasts in categories such as writing, fine art, genealogy, crafts, antiques, various collectibles, coins, and the outdoors. +++++ From the Comics Continuum at http://www.comicscontinuum.com/: SIN CITY ON DVD Buena Vista Home Video has announced that the Sin City movie will reach DVD on Aug. 16 from Dimension Home Video. Sin City, directed by Robert Rodriguez and Sin City creator Frank Miller along guest director Quentin Tarantino, has brought in $72.2 million at the box office since bowing on April 1. The film opened No. 1 at the box office with $29.1 million. The DVD will have a suggested retail price of $29.99. Buena Vista did not release details of bonus features, although Rodriguez said at a convention appearance he planned on a "very, very extensive" DVD, with the film's three segments featured in longer versions. JUGHEAD, BINGO RELATED Classic character Bingo Wilkin and Jughead Jones share an Uncle Herman, it will be revealed in Jughead & Friends #5 in August from Archie Comics. In a change only hardcore Archie fans might have noticed, Riverdale regular Jughead Jones had a jovial Uncle Herman. A few years later, Bingo Wilkin had his own Uncle Herman -- who was identical to Jughead's. "It was just one of those things that we switched around at the time," said Victor Gorelick, Managing Editor for Archie Comic Publications. "Bingo needed an uncle, and we had already created Herman." But in a rare move to bring two usually separate Archie properties together with a dash of continuity, Archie will reveal the true, previously unheard of link between Bingo and Hughead. "The idea was something we just tossed around casually," said Nelson Ribeiro, ACP's Digest Editor. "But the more we talked about it, the more it seemed like a fun idea to try. Mainly to create a good story, but also as a wink to longtime fans." Bingo Wilkin, "That Wilkin Boy," first appeared in That Wilkin Boy #1 in January 1969. +++++ From Newsarama at http://www.Newsarama.com/ DC COMICS RUSH SOLICITS PRELUDE TO INFINITE CRISIS SPECIAL Find out just how deep the roots of INFINITE CRISIS extend with the PRELUDE TO INFINITE CRISIS Special, a 96-page collection of the key stories leading up to this monumental event. At that time DC announced that some of the special's contents include the crossover story from The Flash #219 and Wonder Woman #214 [in their entirety], plus the lead story from Superman Secret Files 2004. Also promised were "select pages from nearly two dozen other DCU comics, with new text adding context to each story sequence." ALAN DAVIS CONFIRMS UNCANNY EXIT Creator Alan Davis has confirmed on his website that he has indeed voluntarily left his role as the Uncanny X-Men penciler later this year. The news began circulating on Internet message boards Friday evening and began on the X-23 message boards by a fan saying that Davis had replied to an email inquiry, informing the fan that his last Uncanny with be #463, [currently scheduled to be released in August]. Sunday Davis posted a message on his website, in response to the many inquiries he's received over the situation that began with the fan posting. In the message he confirms that he "quit" Uncanny on March 31st, expressing that thought it was already public knowledge. He also declined to discuss why he quit. "I had tried to give the assignment my best shot but I didn't think it was working out," writes Davis. "So I moved on. I do have something in the pipeline with Marvel but it is too early to go into any detail." That last bit of information serves to refute rumors and speculation suggesting Davis could be leaving Marvel, despite signing an exclusive agreement with the publisher in the fall of 2003, when it was announced his contract would keep him at Marvel "through the year 2006". Davis went on to say despite believing his exit was already public knowledge and having no problem with it being discussed, he had no knowledge of or asked the fan to publicly post their email exchange. The artist began his run on Uncanny last May with issue #444 as part of Marvel's X-Men "Reload" event. There is no word yet from Marvel on what project Davis will be moving to or who will take up penciling duties on Uncanny following his departure. JAKE TARBOX RESIGNS AS GROUP EDITOR, CMX Newsarama has learned that, less than a year after the line's launch, Jake Tarbox, Group Editor of DC's CMX line of manga titles has resigned his position with the company. Tarbox came on board the line after living for 14 years in Tokyo where he worked at Coamix, Inc. as the International Affairs Manager and Vice-Editor-Chief of Raijin Comics, administered the creation of the American subsidiary company Gutsoon! Entertainment, and edited the manga magazine, Raijin Comics. Gutsoon was on of the first casualties, by many accounts, of the manga "war" for bookshelf and market share that has been going on for the past couple of years. At CMX, Tarbox was responsible for overseeing the translation of DC's manga acquisitions and their subsequent printing for a Western audience. Most recently, Tarbox was vilified by many fans as the focal point of the Tenjho Tenge editing controversy. As sources have pointed out to Newsarama though, Tarbox himself did not make the decision to edit creator Oh Great!'s (Ou Gureito) work to be suitable for a PG-13 audience, but did find himself in the position of having to implement it, which was strongly opposed by many manga fans. At the recent WizardWorld LA, staffers at the DC booth had to keep an eye on the stack of the Tenjho Tenge sample book CMX had available for free, as occasionally, small notes that said "This manga is edited!" and went on to denounce DC and CMX for changing the material would appear on the top of the stack. DC never responded to fans' questions or Newsarama's requests for clarification on the editing of the book. For his tenure at CMX, Tarbox was something of an enigma publicly - all interview requests for the line's Group Editor were turned down by DC, with an offer made of having Jim Lee speak about the manga line (which technically, falls under the Wildstorm imprint of DC, of which Lee is the VP - Editorial Director). Reportedly, Tarbox will continue working with the line, in a freelance capacity - though this has not been confirmed. The resignation of DC's manga line's Group Editor could be seen as continued weakness in DC's ability to bring in and fully exploit other publishing lines, as the publisher has recently discontinued publishing plans for the Rebellion/2000AD line and the Humanoids lines of books - both of which were heralded at the time of their debuts as a sign of DC's commitment to diversifying its product line. As retailer Brian Hibbs pointed out, CMX was similar to Rebellion and the Humanoids lines from DC in 2004, in that no titles from the three imprints appeared on Bookscan's best-seller's chart for the year. Other observers, along with Hibbs pointed that out as a very troubling problem, as the imprints - especially CMX - were seen as being extremely bookstore friendly, even if they would struggle in the direct market. The view that the manga line is doomed to imminent collapse, however, is at the very least moderated by the mention of CMX in the recent press release announcing DC's new branding strategy across all lines of Warner Brothers media. The passage from the release reads: Manga. CMX, DC's new imprint of manga graphic novels publishes all genres of manga including horror, fantasy, science fiction and adventure titles. Later this year, CMX will add the international bestselling Kamikaze Kaito Jeanne to its list, alongside titles such as Gals! and Monster Collection: The Girl Who Can Deal With Magic Monsters (based on the successful fantasy trading card game of the same name). It appears, for the time being, the CMX line is an ongoing concern at DC. Officials from DC were unavailable for comment. MARVEL BASES LIMITED SERIES ON TOY LINE Toy Biz and its parent company Marvel are about to engage in some relatively rare corporate synergy with the release of a four- issue limited series based on an upcoming toy line called Marvel Mega Morphs, a sort of Marvel Super-Heroes meets Transformers with a Power Rangers tip hybrid. Here's how Toy Biz describes the line of toys scheduled to debut this summer. "Mega Morphs. Next generation Super Hero Assault-Bots meant to end crime and herald the dawn of a peaceful planet. But there's one big hurdle standing in the way of the goal. "Developed by the mastermind behind Iron Man's armor, Tony Stark, Mega Morphs are towering metal Assault-Bots that transform into attack vehicles. Only the super hero that the Mega Morph was built for can unlock its unique battle features. But the maniacal Doc Ock stole Tony's designs and used them to build his own Mega Morph to help him devise some type of terrible secret weapon. "Gathering some of the strongest super heroes in the universe, Stark intends to equip the assembled team with their own Mega Morphs to stop Doc Ock in his tracks. Can this battle be won? Only time will tell!" Now comes word from writer Sean McKeever that he has already penned six 8-page "4x"6 mini-comics penciled by Lou Kang that will be included with each figure and will be loosely tied together reflecting the "backstory" (as described above) of the toys. Presumably the six focus on Spider-Man, Wolverine, the Hulk, Captain America, Ghost Rider, and Doc Ock. These will also serve as prequels to a 4-issue Marvel limited series, presumably scheduled for release beginning in August along with the toys. At McKeever's website SeanMcKeever.com, the writer said of the comic book series, "If you enjoy old-school, action-packed Marvel comics, you'll enjoy Mega Morphs."
