This is a first, usually I receive everything every week. I checked my spam box, but even there the parts missing weren't there. It's okay, I'll go to the web site to download the whole issue. But I just wanted to tell you. Have a good weekend. Pascal plavoie@total.net [Some of our AOL subscribers proabably have noted one or two sections not getting through lately. I try to resend but any service can block messages and I can't control that. You can always get the complete text at the AOL web site or the individual messages from the Yahoo Group. See the header above for those links. - D.L.] +++++ From: "Ken Gale" <nuffsaid@riseup.net> Subject: re: Two episodes of 'Nuff Said! Date: Fri, 13 May 2005 17:26:05 -0400 Hi, folks, Please post and forward to appropriate chat rooms, web pages and e-lists! This will be live on the internet, too. Two comics-oriented shows coming up. The next installment of 'Nuff Said!, the Brigadoon of comic book radio shows, will be overnight on Tuesday, May 23rd (technically early in the morning on Wednesday the 24th) from 3:30 AM to 6:00 AM eastern time. I again substitute for Susan Brown's overnight show, "Punk and Hardcore," playing hard rock music until a little before 5 AM then playing an interview with Rich Buckler, creator of Deathlok for Marvel, long-time artist on Fantastic Four and artist on numerous books for Marvel, DC and several independent companies. We also talk about his surrealistic paintings and his art gallery show in Paris, France. Two weeks later, another episode, same time slot. This one is a live interview at the beginning of the show with Tom Pomplun, editor and publisher of Graphic Classics, which for the past four years has been adapting classic short stories into comics by authors such as Mark Twain, H.P. Lovecraft, O. Henry, H.G. Wells, Robert Louis Stevenson, Edgar Allen Poe, etc. You're more likely to see these graphic novels in a school library than a comic book store. Tom also worked on the literary magazine Rosebud before publishing comics. For those of you in the listening area who won't be up that late, you can tape the radio using a vcr by simply connecting the input of your vcr to the output of your stereo. There is a more detailed description of this on our web site: http://www.comicbookradioshow.com/vcr.html. There is also software that enables you do record the live stream off your computer. I've been doing comic book-oriented radio shows since 1993, live-streamed over the internet for the past several years, usually interviewing a creator. I've covered all styles and all eras, pointing out the diversity of the art form to a radio audience who was often unaware of the versatility of sequential art. I used to be weekly, but since 2002 I have done frequent specials, fill-ins and guest stints, keeping the show alive (see http://www.comicbookradioshow.com/nsgl17.html for a recent list and links to the past Guest Lists). Many other WBAI producers, especially Susan Brown and Sidney Smith, have welcomed 'Nuff Said! segments on their shows and I can't thank them enough. I've been in many different time slots, especially on Tuesdays; check the web site. WBAI-FM, 99.5, is a 50,000 watt station broadcast from the Empire State Building. The signal usually gets out to New Haven, CT; Westhampton, L.I.; the Poconos of Pennsylvania, Orange County, NY and Trenton & Princeton, NJ. But via the internet for an even greater distance, natch. WBAI-FM is a listener-supported Pacifica Network station. Bernard White, the program director, said on the air June of 2002, soon after the last regular episode, that 'Nuff Said! was not canceled, just put "on hiatus," but when he last brought out a new schedule 'Nuff Said! Was absent from it. There are rumors that a new schedule will be revealed Real Soon Now. However, that new schedule has not come out, so it can still be changed. Among his criticisms of comic books are that they are "narrow- focused" and only appeal to "middle-class white males." Even mainstream comics don't deserve those criticisms (except for "male") and nearly every African-American who works at the station is into comics and has told him so, sometimes on the air. It seems to fall on deaf ears. And yet, here I am still on the air talking to comic book creators and fans, just not with a predictable schedule and usually in the middle of the night. Check the web site often, especially on a Tuesday. Please spread the word! Even if you're not in the area, you can still listen in via the net. Thanks. Fannishly, Ken Gale, producer, interviewer and host http://www.comicbookradioshow.com _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- [3] [TRIVIA CONTEST] Due to costs, customs regulations, and logistical difficulties: THIS CONTEST IS OPEN TO RESIDENTS OF THE CONTIGUOUS 48 U.S.STATES! IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A U.S. ADDRESS DO NOT ATTEMPT TO WIN THE PRIZE. THE FIRST PLACE TO FIND THE EMAG EACH WEEK IS ON OUR HOME PAGE! IF YOU ARE DESPERATE TO WIN THE TRIVIA, GO THERE FIRST ON FRIDAY NIGHT! http://members.aol.com/ComicBkNet QUESTION OF THE WEEK Prizes donated by Discount Comic Book Service at www.dcbservice.com where you can order most DC, Marvel, Image, and Dark Horse comics, statues and retail products for 35% off. Submit your own trivia and win the CHEEZY PRIZE(tm) if you can stump the readers! You MUST submit the correct answer with your question. LAST ISSUE'S QUESTION OF THE WEEK: Who were the characters Bert and Ernie on Sesame Street were named after? OK, that was a trick question. I pondered asking how Savage Dragon got his powers but that was too easy. So, I opted for a question with the same answer - the creator has never revealed the answer. Many gave the best known response, though it is only an urban myth - that they are named after characters in the movie, "It's A Wonderful Life." Bill Cole, of Bill Cole Enterprises, did his research and guessed the truth was that Jim Henson never made it public what inspired Bert and Ernie. Bill wins JUDGE DREDD: DREDD VS. DEATH TP from Discount Comic Book Service. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ THIS WEEK'S TRIVIA QUESTION: In comic collecting terms, what is the difference between rare, very rare, and scarce? IMPORTANT RULES NOTICE Due to costs, customs regulations, and logistical difficulties: THIS CONTEST IS OPEN TO RESIDENTS OF THE CONTIGUOUS 48 U.S. STATES! IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A U.S. ADDRESS DO NOT ATTEMPT TO WIN THE PRIZE. Email your guess to ComicBkNet@aol.com or just REPLY to the message if you read the Emag in your mail. DO NOT quote the entire message! You MUST allow mail from ComicBkNet@aol.com to be notified if you win. The first correct answer to reach the editor wins the CHEEZY PRIZE(tm). The editor will be the sole judge as to which guess arrived first! Messages with more than one guess will be disqualified. Winners will forfeit their prize if the Email notification is not accepted from ComicBkNet@aol.com LIMIT: ONLY ONE PRIZE every 4 weeks PER PERSON! _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- [4] Network Buzz News, gossip and rumors from the industry DC Comics and Warner Bros. Unveil a New Company Logo for DC Comics, the Publisher of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman; New Logo to Appear on Comic Books, Films and Television Series Based on DC Properties NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)----DC Comics, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company and the world's largest English-language publisher of comics, unveiled a new DC Comics company logo today that will appear on comic books, graphic novels and, for the first time ever, on films and television series based on DC properties. The new DC logo will make its first appearance on a DC Comics cover May 25 when the company publishes DC Special: The Return of Donna Troy #1 and will then appear on the entire DC line the following week. An animated version of the new DC logo premieres June 15 with the release of Batman Begins, the highly anticipated Warner Bros. Pictures film directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Liam Neeson, Katie Holmes and Morgan Freeman. For more than 70 years, DC Comics has provided entertainment for every age group and interest. In 2005, DC Comics is entering a new phase of growth with the launch of an exciting line-up of new publishing projects, feature films, television programming, licensing ventures and collectible products. The new logo, created by Josh Beatman of Brainchild Studios, highlights DC Comics' ambitious media plans for the future and represents the latest step in Warner Bros. Entertainment and Time Warner's commitment to maximize the value and exposure of DC Comics. "DC is a unique and powerful asset whose characters have long been exceptional performers for Warner Bros. with billions of dollars in cumulative sales," said Kevin Tsujihara, Executive Vice President, Corporate Business Development & Strategy, Warner Bros. Entertainment. "This new logo and branding program is a statement that the DC brand is a strategic asset and vital tool in our approach to creating and developing films, television, merchandising and games." "For generations, comic book fans have been loving supporters of the DC brand: voting us their favorite publisher, counting on us to provide a universe of imagination and entertainment, and looking for our mark as an invitation to try new characters and titles," commented DC Comics President and Publisher Paul Levitz. "With the introduction of our new logo and a comprehensive branding program, we're inviting our fans in all media to continue to count on the DC brand standing for the best comics, classic characters and a fantastic creative experience." 2005 marks a particularly exciting year for DC across all media, including: -- Theatrical releases. In February, Warner Bros. Pictures released Constantine, directed by Francis Lawrence and starring Keanu Reeves, Rachel Weisz and Tilda Swinton. Based on the comic book Hellblazer, the film was the first to be based on a property from DC's Vertigo imprint and has grossed more than $200 million worldwide since its release. In June, Batman Begins will explore the origins of the Batman legend and the Dark Knight's emergence as a force for good in Gotham City. This fall will see the release of another major motion picture based on DC comic books, V For Vendetta (based on the graphic novel by Alan Moore and David Lloyd), starring Natalie Portman and Hugo Weaving, produced by Joel Silver and the Wachowski Brothers from a script by the Wachowski Brothers. Production is also underway on Warner Bros. Pictures' Superman Returns, directed by Bryan Singer and starring Brandon Routh, Kate Bosworth and Kevin Spacey. -- Television programs. There are currently a record five television shows on the air based on DC Comics properties: The WB Network's hit drama Smallville (produced by Warner Bros. Television), three acclaimed Cartoon Network programs-- Justice League Unlimited, Teen Titans and Krypto the Superdog-- and, appearing on both Kids' WB! and Cartoon Network, The Batman. Warner Bros. Animation produces all of the animated series based on DC characters that air on Cartoon Network and Kids' WB! -- Home video. Warner Home Video has amassed an extensive library of DC Comics related releases, including DVDs of theatrical releases (including Superman: The Movie and Batman), live-action television shows (including Smallville, Wonder Woman and Lois & Clark), animated television shows (including The Batman, Static Shock and Challenge of the Super Friends) and direct-to-video projects (Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker and Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman). -- Video games. Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, DC Comics and Electronic Arts will release a Batman Begins video game day and date with the film on the PlayStation(R)2 computer entertainment system, the Xbox(R) video game system from Microsoft, the Nintendo GameCube(TM) and Game Boy(R) Advance. Electronic Arts is also developing computer and video games based on Superman. -- Comic books. Each month, DC Comics and imprints Vertigo and WildStorm publish more than 75 comic books, including perennial favorites Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and The Flash, and critically acclaimed series such as 100 Bullets, Y the Last Man and Ex Machina. In 2005, several of the comic industry's premier talents are bringing their distinctive talents to DC's iconic characters. In July, DC will unite two legends, Frank Miller (Sin City, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns) and Jim Lee (Batman: Hush, Superman: For Tomorrow) for the new series All- Star Batman & Robin. The ongoing series will pair all-star creative teams with all-star characters to create memorable and dynamic adventures. In October, DC will publish Infinite Crisis, the most eagerly anticipated sequel in the history of comic books, to be written by Geoff Johns and illustrated by Phil Jimenez. And in December, DC will unveil All-Star Superman by Grant Morrison (JLA) and Frank Quitely (X-Men). -- Graphic novels. DC will publish two powerhouse hardcover books this fall, Identity Crisis, a superhero murder mystery by New York Times bestselling writer Brad Meltzer, and The Quitter, a coming-of-age graphic novel by Harvey Pekar (American Splendor). -- Manga. CMX, DC's new imprint of manga graphic novels publishes all genres of manga including horror, fantasy, science fiction and adventure titles. Later this year, CMX will add the international bestselling Kamikaze Kaito Jeanne to its list, alongside titles such as Gals! and Monster Collection: The Girl Who Can Deal With Magic Monsters (based on the successful fantasy trading card game of the same name). -- DC Direct. DC Direct, DC Comics' own toy and collectibles brand, markets and distributes a wide variety of collectibles for pop culture enthusiasts, comic book fans and toy collectors alike. The product line includes action figures and statues of DC's most popular characters, including Batman, Superman, Green Lantern and Sandman, as well as collectible statues based on Cartoon Network's hit shows Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends and Puffy AmiYumi. -- Global brand alliances. The DC brand reaches into all forms of pop culture, through relationships with powerful partners including Coca-Cola, Converse, Dolce & Gabbana, Hasbro, Mattel, Microsoft Xbox(R), Monolith, Nintendo, Pepsi, Rocawear, Sony, Upper Deck, and Verizon. Warner Bros. Consumer Products licenses all of DC's major properties and this year a massive licensing program for Batman will dominate the retail environment. As both a distinguished publisher and a vital creative development source, DC is a unique asset in the media world for both Warner Bros. Entertainment and Time Warner. DC has the ability to create properties that appeal to a wide-ranging audience, from preschoolers (Krypto) to adults (Constantine), and everyone in between. For decades, DC characters have permeated pop culture around the world and cutting edge graphic novels such as Watchmen and Sandman have altered the public's idea of the medium. 2005 marks the beginning of the next stage of the ongoing evolution of one of the media world's gems, DC Comics. DC Comics, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, is the largest English-language publisher of comics in the world and home to such iconic characters as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and the Sandman. These DC super heroes and others have starred in comic books, movies, television series (both animated and live- action) and cyberspace, thrilling audiences of all ages for generations.
