MARVEL TAPS BEST-SELLING AUTHOR JONATHAN LETHEM TO PEN NEW COMIC
BOOK SERIES BASED ON "OMEGA THE UNKNOWN"

Acclaimed Writer of Motherless Brooklyn and Fortress of Solitude
to Reintroduce Cult Marvel Comics Super Hero from the 1970s; First
Issue Scheduled to Launch in Early 2006

NEW YORK - Omega the Unknown, the enigmatic super hero first
introduced by Marvel Comics in the 1970s, will be re-introduced
early next year in an updated series written by Jonathan Lethem,
the critically praised author best known for his novels "The
Fortress of Solitude" and "Motherless Brooklyn," which won a
National Book Critics Circle Award.

The series will mark Jonathan Lethem's first comic book writing
effort.  The initial storyline will center on a teenage prodigy
from Washington Heights, and his relationship with Omega, a
mysterious and silent Super Hero from another world. The 10-issue
series will launch in early 2006.

Lethem is working with artist Farel Dalrymple and colorist Paul
Hornschemeier on the series.

"I'm an enormous fan of Jonathan's writing, especially his rich
and emotional portrayal of Brooklyn," said Joe Quesada, Editor-
in-Chief of Marvel Comics.  "While Omega the Unknown was a
relatively obscure series from the 70s, Jonathan remembers it
vividly from his youth, and I know that his new exploration of
this hero will delight traditional comic fans and definitely
appeal to a whole new audience of fans drawn to his imaginative
and powerful storytelling."

Jonathan Lethem commented, ""Omega the Unknown is a great
character -- a kind of archetypal super hero who's also a blank
slate. The original story had an uncanny power over my
imagination, and seemed potentially to have the intrigue and
complexity of a great novel. I've always been drawn to comics as
a medium and this chance to work with Marvel -- and to revive
this character and bring his story to fulfillment -- is a kind of
a dream-come-true for me."

Marvel Next feels the pull of GRAVITY

"This is easily the most excited I've ever been about something
I've written," says writer Sean McKeever of the new mini-series
GRAVITY. "It's just so refreshing to see Marvel Manhattan through
a new pair of eyes and to delve into that classic Marvel mix of
super hero action and personal drama. And, to me, Mike's art just
really screams 'Marvel!' at the top of its lungs."

Adds artist Mike Norton, "This book has been a dream come true.
It's been great to work on something that has all the elements of
why I got into comics in the first place."

McKeever and Norton, the creative team responsible for the
acclaimed Indie drama, The Waiting Place, introduce the next great
Marvel Next hero...NYC college freshman Greg Willis, aka Gravity!
He's made his way through high school and moved out of his
parents' house -- finally ready to get a job, pick a major, and
meet the girl of his dreams...and also realize his dream of

Two generations unite for LAST HERO STANDING

June 8th is the street date for the second issue of LAST HERO
STANDING -- a weekly five-part event that unites two generations
of Marvel heroes!

Says penciler Pat Olliffe's, "The huge scale of Last Hero Standing
has been the thing I've really enjoyed, and I know it'll be what
the readers are going to enjoy as well. Getting the chance to draw
all of these characters has been a blast!"

Tom DeFalco couldn't be more thrilled to pen the series, "After
writing Spider-Girl for over seven years, it is a rare pleasure
to visit some of my old friends in the real Marvel Universe like
Captain America, Hawkeye, the Watcher, Vision and the Scarlet
Witch.  I grew up with these characters and they all helped to
define the word 'Hero' for me.  While Last Hero Standing is a
stand-alone and accessible Hoo-Ha action story, I hope it will
also remind old readers why they first fell in love with Marvel
Comics and also start the love affair with some new readers."

With LAST HERO STANDING, the great heroes of the Marvel Universe
are vanishing without a trace -- what has happened to Spider-Man,
The Thing, Captain America, and the rest of the MU's heavy
hitters? Spider-Girl and the Fantastic Five must join forces with
today's superstars to uncover the answer...and the trail leads to
a major Avengers villain! Does the presence of the Watcher
signify the end of this age of heroes?

SMALLVILLE RETURNS

Smallville will return for a fifth season in a new time period
on The WB, the network announced on Tuesday.
Beginning next season, the show will air on Thursdays at 8 p.m.
"This season, we're making a bold statement on Thursday nights
by moving one of our signature hits, Smallville, to 8:00," said
David Janollari, The WB's entertainment president. "The show faced
some of the toughest competition of any series on television this
season, going up against Lost every week, yet it continued to
deliver great ratings."
Here's how the network describes the new season:
"Smallville is coming off a great year that continued to explore
the mythology of the early days of the Clark Kent character. More
exciting pieces of the puzzle will be revealed next season when
Clark finds himself transported to the Fortress of Solitude.
Starring Tom Welling as the Kansas farm boy who grows up to be
Superman, the series is The WB's number one show with men 18-34
and third highest-rated series in adults 18-34."
Returning cast members include Tom Welling, Kristin Kreuk,
Michael Rosenbaum, Allison Mack, John Glover, Annette O'Toole and
John Schneider. The network did not mention what will happen with
Erica Durance's role as Lois Lane.
In a related note, Jensen Ackles, a fourth-season cast member of
Smallville, will be featured in a new series on the network,
Supernatural.

Marvel's Excalibur Cancelled with Issue #14

Fans of the series wondering what's been going on with Marvel's
Excalibur, which hasn't seen a new issue solicited since this
month's issue #14 finally have an answer.

Marvel has confirmed for Newsarama that the series, one of
Marvel's mid-tier X-titles will end with issue #14, due in stores
next week. The series, written by Chris Claremont, with art by
Aaron Lopresti, launched as part of Marvel's "Reload" event in May
of 2004, which saw new teams tackle existing X- titles, as well as
the launch of Excalibur, District X and Astonishing X-Men. The
revitalization of the X-franchise was meant, in part to target
titles to certain regions or themes of the X-Universe. Excalibur,
at its start was the title that followed Professor Xavier and
Magneto through the fallout of Grant Morrison's New X-Men run.

As an interesting touchstone, of the eight titles the saw changes
or launched as part of "Reload," (including the core X- titles and
Astonishing), Excalibur is the second to end in under a year,
following the cancellation of Weapon X (which is returning as a
miniseries), although Excalibur may be the second of three, as
rumors persist at the future of District X past its House of M
incarnation of Mutopia X.

The series, while not one of the company's top sellers, has
performed recently in the 40,000 copy-range, according to
estimates, so it's ending is not purely sales based, although the
P/L ratio may be at issue, as could be the relatively mid- level
showing for a title written by one of Marvel's marquee creators.

In any case, Marvel has confirmed for Newsarama that an
announcement regarding Claremont's new project, spinning out of
House of M will be made at next month's WizardWorld: Philadelphia
convention.

Frank Gorshin Dies at 72

Through he portrayed hundreds of characters, for comic book fans,
Frank Gorshin will always be the Riddler. The 72 year-old actor
passed away Tuesday evening after being hospitalized for three
weeks with multiple ailments at Providence Saint Joseph Medical
Center in Burbank.

Gorshin was born April 5th, 1934 in Pittsburgh, PA. He began
acting when he was 12, and while in high school, was already
earning a reputation for his dead-on impressions. His career was
at age 17 when, as a winner of a talent contest, he landed
a one-week engagement at Jackie Heller's Carousel night club, with
Alan King headlining.

From there, Gorshin attended Carnegie Tech, served in the Army in
Korea, and fully entered show business with a role in The Proud
and The Profane. After mistakenly being reported as killed in
1957, Gorshin's movie career continued, as did roles on television
dramas and a headliner in Las Vegas clubs.

In the '60s, Gorshin's breakthrough came when he landed the part
of The Riddler on the Batman television series. "I could feel the
impact overnight," Gorshin is quoted as saying at
www.frankgorshin.com

Like many of the series' stars who played villains, Gorshin's
career continued after Batman ended, with many more roles in film
and on television, as well as a prolific career both in acting and
performing at nightclubs. While his roles were varied over the
years, Gorshin never shied from genre work, as he was the
half-black, half-white alien in the Star Trek: TOS episode, "Let
That Be Your Last Battlefield," as well as performing in Buck
Rogers in the 25th Century, Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of
Superman, Meteor Man, 12 Monkeys and many others.

Most recently, Gorshin portrayed the legendary George Burns on
Broadway in the Tony-nominated show "Say Goodnight Gracie," a
tribute to George Burns.

One of Gorshin's final television appearances will be broadcast
tomorrow night, the season finale of CBS' C.S.I., directed by
Quentin Tarantino. In it, Gorshin and fellow Vegas pal Tony Curtis
appear as themselves.

In a statement to the AP, Gorshin's long-time friend and former
co-star Adam west said, "Frank will be missed. He made an
indelible impression as The Riddler in the classic 'Batman' TV
series and he was a fine impressionist as well. Frank made me
laugh. He was a friend and fascinating character.''

KELSEY GRAMMER IS X3's BEAST

While the bulk of the cast for the third X-Men movie is already in
place, Variety today announced a new addition to both the cast and
the characters that will appear in the film: Kelsey (Frasier)
Grammer as Hank McCoy, aka Beast.

Blue fur and all.

While spinning it to the trade and non-comics readers Marvel's Avi
Arad confirmed what many X-Men fans have known for years: "Kelsey
was born to play the role," Arad said. "This is a big role in the
new movie, and when we met with him, you can see that Kelsey has
that you'd-better-have-a-dictionary-handy intelligence."

The trade confirmed that X3's Beast will be the 355-pound, blue
furred version.

Also, Vinnie (Snatch) Jones is slated to play Juggernaut in the
film, named by the trade as the anchor of Magneto's "villainous
band." Maggie (Lost) Grace is in negotiations to play Kitty Pryde,
while the studio is still searching for an actor to play Angel,
described by the trade as "a handsome winged mutant who is ashamed
of his feathery appendages."

Directed by Matthew Vaughn, X-Men 3 is slated to open Memorial Day
weekend, 2006.

COMIXFAN NEWS BRIEFS- MAY 16, 2005

NEWSFLASH! Now Playing Magazine sat down with Spider-Man 3
director Sam Raimi and he spoke on the subject of Arachnid Super
Hero love. "{Peter is} going to try to move to the next phase of
his life, the next stage, young adulthood, and he's going to now
be dealing with issues of self-esteem and how he can carry on a
relationship, which is much more complex than having an occasional
date with some woman and not revealing all of your secrets to
her," says Raimi. "And it's going to be about how she and he might
find a way to live together with this responsibility and the
conflict that being this person creates in this relationship...
{MJ} is integral to the story, and the movie is going to really
follow the continuation of her and Peter Parker's love story."

NEWSFLASH! Daily Variety is reporting that Warren Beatty has
finally lost his mind. Okay, maybe that was harsh, but here's the
scoop on what could possibly lead to the return of the man in the
fedora.

No, not the one with the whip.

"Beatty, who starred in and directed the 1990 film "Dick Tracy,"
based on the classic comic strip, is seeking a ruling that he
still owns film and other rights, plus $30 million in damages. The
damage figure presumably is based on the profit Beatty expects to
see from a sequel. Domestic box office for the film in 1990 was
$100 million, making it the ninth highest-grossing film of that
year."

NEWSFLASH! Toon Zone is reporting that former X-Files star Mitch
Pileggi will be providing the voice for Commissioner James Gordon
during the second season of The Batman on Kids WB. According to
the report, the character will be introduced in an episode
entitled "Night and The City" and will eventually come into
conflict with other members of the Gotham Police Department over
his support of Batman.

This will not be Pileggi's first foray into the world of the caped
crusader, as he has previously done voice work for Batman Beyond.

NEWSFLASH! The Boston Herald has a brief story up on Spider-Man
actor James Franco, who says that filming on the third film is
slated to begin in January of next year.

NEWSFLASH! The Official James Newton Howard Website has posted a
brief excerpt from SFX Magazine on Batman Begins composers James
Newton Howard and Hans Zimmer. The two talk about how their
collaboration began and what filmgoers can expect to hear in terms
of a theme for the character.

In related news, Toon Zone has cover art and track listings for
the upcoming film's soundtrack.
