comics that can literally change your life forever. In a
dangerously uncertain world, Kochalka plots a theoretical path to
happiness. Collecting his most intensely thoughtful work,
Kochalka tackles all of the big issues: comics and art, birth and
death, technology and joy, and everything in between. Included
are The Horrible Truth about Comics, Reinventing Everything parts
1 and 2, Sunburn, The Cute Manifesto, and even Kochalka's famous
"Craft is the Enemy" essays.

July 2005:

Humor Can Be Funny
By Sam Henderson - mwhistle@aol.com

For Mature Readers
128 pages
6" x 9"
B&W
$11.95
ISBN: 1-891867-41-5
July 2005

The cult classic is back in print! Sam Henderson's 1996
collection of his early mini-comics is available once again with
this July 2005 release. See what his work liked like back when he
was poor(er). Introduction by Mark Martin.

"There are something like 50-60 strips here, with the longest
being seven or eight pages. The brevity suits Henderson and his
style of savage, biting, sarcastic humor. Henderson realizes the
subject matter often doesnIt merit more than one brutal kick-in-
the-ass punchline. Some of the best sections feature several one-
panel comics on a single page or two-page spread. This isn't
moronic humor; Henderson knows what heIs doing and some of the
more satisfying bits of this book are those strips where he pulls
apart and analyzes the humor involved or simply acknowledges a
stripIs abrupt vapidity. Better critics than myself have been
screaming about Henderson for years, including a number of
recommendations right here. With this attractive, meaty tome, you
no longer have an excuse to ignore them."
~Tom Spurgeon, The Comics Journal

August 2005:

Grickle 2nd edition
By Graham Annable - grickle@hotmail.com

128 pgs
6" x 9"
B&W
$14.95
ISBN: 1-891867-01-6
AUGUST 2005

Nominated for the 2002 Harvey Award for Best New Talent, and the
2002 YALSA Best Graphic Novel for Young Adults, Grickle collects
two dozen beautiful stories in which devilish comedy and eye-
watering art enclose a rich, chocolatey center of sad poetry and
bruised but intact innocence. "An animator by day, Annable
apparently spends his nights drawing comedic, metaphorical
stories about capriciousness, cruelty and absurdity.  Annable
draws characters in a drastically simplified, cartoony style with
bug eyes and big noses, occasionally reducing arms and legs to
sticks. But his animation experience reveals itself in the body
language and movement of these black and white doodles.

"Annable deserves attention and support as a strong, independent
new talent."
~TIME Magazine.

"Grickle is a must-read for any fan of visual poetry."
~Wizard Magazine.

"The sort of Feiffer-esque everyman 'guy' character (no hair or
clothes, square-bodied, no unseemly marks causing in the reader a
failure to identify with the main character of each story) is
clearly a stand-in for, well, you. Or not necessarily you, but
some guy you knew in grade school, or your brother, your crazy
cartoonist friend, your coworker. Someone close to you. Someone
you invest in."
~The Comics Journal.

"Grickle is simplistic in a Kurtzmanesque way (although Annable's
style is far removed from Harvey Kurtzman's); there are no wasted
lines, no unnecessary details to detract from the point of each
story. Like Jules Feiffer in his prime, Annable has found the
perfect blending of essential art and essentual words for each
tale."
~Comic Shop News.

"Graham Annable's Grickle is damn close to comics genius,"
~INK19.

"This book is amazing. Annable has a disarmingly simple style
that he uses to tell stories of great emotional heft."
~Comic Book Galaxy.

Illustrated by John Green (Disney Adventures, WJHC, Teen Boat)
Back Cover by Kazu Kibuishi (Flight, Daisy Cutter,

familiar wizard, and a quirky fast-food restauranteur to finally

"Quicken Forbidden is a rollicking Harry Potter-esq fantasy, but
it is it's sense of humor that makes it glow."
-Craig Thompson, Blankets

"Jax's stories are compulsively readable.  They are like mice:
you can't stop at just one. You know, if you eat mice".
-Jane Espenson (writer/producer of Buffy the Vampire Slayer,
Firefly, Gilmore Girls)

So be sure to let your comic shop know you want them to order
some copies of Quicken Forbidden #13 from Cryptic Press!

And be sure to check out Jax's other adventures in the collected

Quicken Forbidden follows the misadventures of a kleptomaniac
teenager, Jax Epoch, who broke into an abandoned laboratory in
Manhattan where she ended up chasing a white rabbit through the
Realmsend, a passageway into different dimensions. In this other
world, Jax came across some magical armor and an ancient book
that she "borrowed". Returning home she realized that everything
that was magic in the other realm had begun leaking into her own,
causing her reality to fall apart.  Dragons now fly over the
streets of Manhattan, marshmallows talk back, snow falls in July,
and her boyfriend Adam, dumps her for things done by her evil
twin.

Thanks to the highly successful release of a collected trade
paperback from AiT/PlanetLar, hundreds of new readers have
discovered the magic and adventure of Quicken Forbidden and its
unique heroine, Jax Epoch.
