WIZARD WORLD PHILADELPHIA 2005 DAY 2 REPORT

Day two of Wizard World Philadelphia has wrapped up, and once
again Marvel and DC were on hand to divulge tidbits of information
about numerous upcoming projects.

Marvel kicked things off with their House of M panel, and despite
the veil of secrecy surrounding the project a few tidbits of
information were revealed.
-Though the covers for issues #2, #3, and #5 were displayed, the
cover to #4 was replaced by a "classified" image.
-The fact that certain titles will not be affected by House of M
will be explained.
-The House of M event will continue to affect the Marvel Universe
for the next 18 months. Readers will have a sense of what these
changes will be by the end of House of M #8. Some titles will end,
and some new titles will begin as a result of the event.
-Young Avengers #9-12 will deal with the fallout from the event.
-Moon Knight will be getting a new series in February 2006. A
writer has been selected, though Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada
declined to name who.
-There are long term Polaris plans post-House of M which will
address questions surrounding the character.
-House of M will also reveal more about the "Magneto" that
destroyed Manhattan in New X-Men.
-Expect to see a new Masters of Evil in 2006.
 -Thor will come back eventually.
-Quesada said that Marvel have secured a "stellar" creative team
for Iron Man to follow on from writer Warren Ellis and artist Adi
Granov.

Next Up was DC's DC Universe panel, which gathered a larger crowd
than usual after it was announced that the publisher would be
giving away tickets for a screening of Batman Begins on Saturday
night.

-Green Lantern Corps: Recharge will debut in September, written
by Geoff Johns and Dave Gibbons with art by Patrick Gleason and
Christian Alamy.
-September will also see Hawkman tie into the Rann-Thanagar War.
-Still in September, and DC will be producing a line of Showcase
Presents books that will collect classic stories in a 500 page
black & white collections. The first characters to receive this
treatment will be Superman and Jonah Hex, with Green Lantern,
Metamorpho, and the JLA to follow.
Darwyn Cooke's four-part Flash story will begin in October with
issue #227.
A new Vigilante series will debut in September, written by Bruce
Jones with Ben Oliver on art and Michael Golden on covers. Jones
told attendees that, "It's very, very, very dark."
-Jones will also be penning a new Warlord series in January 2006
with artist Bart Sears.
-Joe Kubert is returning to DC and Sgt. Rock in The Prophecy, a
six issue mini-series Kubert will write and draw beginning in
January 2006.
-Staying with the Kuberts, and it was announced that both Adam
and Andy have signed three year exclusive contracts with DC.
-Jonah Hex is also set to return, written by Jimmy Palmiotti with
art by Luke Gross.
-Green Lantern: Rebirth artist Ethan Van Sciver will return to
the character very shortly when he provides the art for Green
Lantern #4-6. Van Sciver will then alternate with Carlos Pacheco
as regular series artist.
-Each of the seven issues of Infinite Crisis will feature two
covers, one by Jim Lee and the other by George Perez.

Marvel returned later in the day with EiC Joe Quesada's "Cup o'
Joe" panel.

-Despite their being exclusive to DC, the Kubert brothers still
have some outstanding work to complete for Marvel. Andy will
finish the first Ultimate Iron Man mini-series, whilst Adam is
working on an upcoming issue of Incredible Hulk as well as
Daredevil: The Target #2 (and yes, you read that correctly!).
-A new Black Widow mini-series by writer Richard Morgan, artist
Sean Phillips, and cover artist Bill Sienkiewicz will debut in
September.
-Writer Dan Slott and artist Juan Bobillo will once again be
working on She-Hulk when the title is relaunched this October.
Issue #1 will feature a cover by painter Greg Horn.
-The Franklin Richards: Son of a Genius back-up stories from the
recent Power Pack mini-series will be collected along with a new
story.
-The Pulse #11 will feature the birth of Jessica Jones and Luke
Cage's baby.
-A new Sentry mini-series by writer Paul Jenkins and artist John
Romita Jr. will debut later this year.
-Andrea Divito will step in as guest artist for Young Avengers
#7.
-Classic Thor will return in Thor: Blood Oath, written by Michael
Avon Oeming with art by Scott Kolins.
-The Fantastic Four will have some of their most famous stories
retold in Fantastic Four: First Family by writer Joe Casey and
artist Chris Weston. The mini-series will be similar to what
Earth's Mightiest Heroes was for the Avengers.
-The Book of Doom by writer Ed Brubaker and artists Pablo Ramondi
and Mark Farmer will tell the origins of Doctor Doom beginning in
October.
-Slott and Divito will team up for a new Thing mini-series
beginning this November.
-Writer Keith Giffen and artist Mitch Breitweiser are teaming up
for Drax the Destroyer, a four-issue mini-series planned for the
near future.
-Runaways #9-12 will feature another guest appearance by Cloak
and Dagger.
-Captain America #11 will address the origin of the Winter
Solider.
-Expect an announcement about Neil Gaiman's next Marvel project
at Wizard World Chicago. It will be set in the Marvel Universe,
have ties to House of M, and most likely be a solo character
series.
-The new Daredevil creative team to follow the outgoing team of
writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Alex Maleev will be
announced soon.
-X-Men movie director Bryan Singer will begin his run on Ultimate
X-Men in December or January.
-Sean McKeever's critically-acclaimed Sentinel is set to return
later on this year.

WIZARD WORLD PHILADELPHIA 2005 DAY 3 REPORT

Wizard World Philadelphia may have came to a end today, but it
went out with a bang. Both Marvel and DC provided con attendees
with exciting hints of what is to come for both companies later
this year.

The first panel of the day belonged to Batman, with DC's Dan
Didio, Scott Beatty (Batman Begins comic adaptation), and Bruce
Jones (Batman/Scarecrow: Year One) on hand to answer questions
about the Dark Knight.
-The first topic for discussion was the many roles of Batman.
Though Batman is often thought of as a detective or dark hero,
Didio said that Batman's current role is primarily as an "urban
commando". He has an army at his disposal which he uses to protect
the city. One of the reasons that many of the Bat-centric heroes
are moving away from Gotham is to signify another change in
Batman's persona.
-Frank Miller and Jim Lee's All Star Batman and Robin, the Boy
Wonder was a hot topic during the panel. Didio referred to the
series as an unofficial "Batman: Year Two" and explained the
importance of Robin in the title. Miller intends to show how Dick
Grayson affected Batman's personality and outlook as his sidekick,
Robin.
-Infinite Crisis was mentioned constantly throughout the panel,
and it looks as if the mini-series will have a serious effect on
the Batman books. In Crisis, fans will not only see the return of
the Joker, but also the answer to the question, "Who would replace
Batman if he died tomorrow?"
-Bruce Wayne will be playing a major role in the Batman titles
after Infinite Crisis. Didio said, "Even though I think Bruce
Wayne is just a mask, I think it is important that we see that
mask."
-Didio also answered some general questions about Batman as well.
He assured fans that Barbara Gordon will never walk again. He
thinks the story was too important to just undo, and that Barbara
is doing more good as Oracle than she ever could as Batgirl. Upon
being asked whether either of the newly signed Kubert brothers
would be working on a Batman title he answered that they are still
in discussion, but that the Kuberts will have drawn every major DC
character by the end of their three year tenure.
-Didio also assured fans that Gotham Central would be staying
around for awhile, and that it is a core book in the DCU.

Just 30 minutes after the Batman panel, Marvel presented its'
highly anticipated Ultimate panel. In attendance was Marvel's head
of marketing John Dokes with Ultimate editors Nick Lowe and John
Barber. Much like the Batman panel, the Ultimate universe panel
was more of a Q&A.

First up was a PowerPoint presentation of what is to come in the
Ultimate Universe featuring a sneak peak at the Ultimate Annuals
and the next arc of each respective title.

-Ultimate Spider-Man Annual #1 will introduce Spider-Man's new
girlfriend, who has appeared in the pages of Ultimate Spider-Man
before, and will feature the return of the Rhino.
-Fans were also treated to a glimpse at Brian Michael Bendis'
and Mark Bagley's upcoming Ultimate Spider-Man 'Warriors' story
arc, beginning in issue #79, including character designs for
Ultimate Iron Fist and Ultimate Shang-Chi.
-The next Ultimate topic of discussion revolved around the
Ultimate Fantastic Four. Things started off with a look at the
controversial 'Crossover' arc that will be featured in Ultimate
Fantastic Four #21-#23. Marvel gave the fans a taste of what to
expect by showing not only issue #21's cover but several interior
pages as well.
-When asking about whether Reed Richards would meet House of M
Reed Richards rather than 616 Reed Richards, fans were answered
with a mixed answer that hinted at it being a possibility.
-The Ultimate Defenders will return in Ultimates Annual #1. Also
it was revealed that all mysteries will be solved before the end
of the current Ultimates 2 series.
-Last on the slate was Ultimate X-Men. Fans were first shown the
cover and interior art from the upcoming Ultimate X-Men Annual
#1. This issue will feature the return of not only Gambit and
Rogue, but also Juggernaut.
-Fans were also treated to some details about writer Brian K.
Vaughan's final arc on Ultimate X-Men, 'Magnetic North'. This arc
will last from issues #61-#65 and will tie together all of the
stories that have been running throughout the pages of Ultimate
X-Men during Vaughan's tenure. It will also feature the return of
characters such as Polaris, Mystique, Havok, Northstar, and, of
course, Magneto.
-After 'Magnetic North', X-Men movie director Bryan Singer will
begin his twelve issue run with Vaughan co-writing. The first
story arc is set to begin in January.
-Barber implied that there's a good chance that Ultimate
Apocalypse will appear during Singer and Vaughan's tenure.
-Barnes & Noble will be publishing an Ultimate X-Men hardcover
edition similar to their earlier Ultimate Spider-Man volume.

So that is it for Wizard World Philadelphia 2005. I hope everyone
enjoyed the announcements made at the convention, and stay tuned
for Wizard World Chicago since I was told there would be many
more exciting announcements made later on this Summer!

RATNER 'RUSHES' TO HELM X-MEN 3

Rush Hour director Brett Ratner has signed on to helm the third
film in 20th Century Fox's X-Men movie franchise, according to
Variety. Ratner replaces Matthew Vaughn, who left the project
last week due to personal reasons.

The directorial saga of X-Men 3 would appear to have come full
circle, with comic book enthusiast Ratner having been amongst the
directors originally considered for first X-Men film that Bryan
Singer ultimately helmed. Ratner then spent a full year
developing Superman Returns for Warner Bros., the film that saw
Singer opt out of directing X-Men 3.

Reportedly, the X-Men 3 budget is locked, and both Fox and Marvel
consider the script by Zak Penn and Simon Kinberg to be at least
as strong as that of the first two installments. Returning stars
Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Famke Janssen, and
Alan Cumming have all been signed up, with Kelsey Grammer, Vinnie
Jones, and Maggie Grace recently added to the ensemble cast.

ARTISTS ADAM AND ANDY KUBERT SIGN 3-YEAR EXCLUSIVE AGREEMENTS
WITH DC COMICS
 June 6th, 2005 -

DC Comics has signed two of the hottest artists in comics to 3-
year exclusive agreements: Adam Kubert (Ultimate Fantastic Four,
Ultimate X-Men) and Andy Kubert (1602, Origin, Ultimate Iron Man,
Ultimate X-Men).

"I am so thrilled and excited to be a part of DC Comics," says
Andy. "After making my home at Marvel for the last 15 years - a
place that I love and will continue to do so - I get to stretch
my wings a bit and tackle the DC icons! I can't wait! As a comics
artist, I can't tell you how fortunate I feel right now to have
the career that I have had, in a medium that I love so much. I am
very, very lucky."

"This is a big move for Andy and myself...huge...and it's hard to
put into words the excitement I'm feeling," says Adam. "I could
say how accommodating and professional DC Comics has been in all
our dealings, in particular Dan DiDio and Terri Cunningham (VP -
Managing Editor). I could say that I'm finally going to get to
draw all those iconic characters I grew up with. I could say that
I sincerely feel my best work is yet to come. It's difficult to
put this all into a compact soundbite. So, let me steal a quote
from my mom instead: 'What more could a mother want?'"

"Without a doubt this is one of the highlights of my time here at
DC," says Dan DiDio, VP - Executive Editor, DCU. "Never has any
signing felt so right. Both of these men belong here, and the
entire company is excited that they will be working on our
greatest characters."

Geppi Plans Comic Book Museum
At Camden Yards
 June 06, 2005
The AP is reporting that the Maryland Stadium Authority has voted
to lease space at Baltimore's Camden Station, the gateway to
Camden Yards, to Steve Geppi, a minority owner of the Orioles and
the founder of Diamond Comic Distributors, for a comic book and
pop culture museum.  The lease will have to be approved by the
Maryland General Assembly's Legislative Policy Committee, but
approval is expected and the museum should be open in about a
year.

The proposed Geppi's Entertainment Museum (GEM) would be located
on the second and third floors of Camden Station, a restored
brick train station, which also hosts a sports museum, Sports
Legends at Camden Yards, a museum dedicated to local sports icons
such as the Baltimore-born Babe Ruth and the Orioles' Cal Ripken
Jr.

Geppi's personal collection, a portion of which is on display at
the Diamond International Galleries at Diamond headquarters in
Timonium, Maryland, would form the core of the new Geppi
Entertainment Museum's collection.  Although a number of previous
attempts to create a viable comic art museum, such as Kevin
Eastman's Words and Pictures and the International Museum of
Cartoon Art in Boca Raton, Florida, have failed, the GEM's
location in the tourist-friendly confines of Camden Yard and the
Hollywood-driven increased visibility of comic book heroes could
well make Geppi's effort a success.

'Land of the Dead' Comics
5-Part Adaptation From IDW
 June 06, 2005
Universal Studio Consumer Products Group has licensed IDW
Publishing to publish a five-part comic book adaptation of
Universal Pictures' horror film, George A. Romero's Land of the
Dead, which is scheduled for release on June 24th.  The Land of
the Dead comic is a monthly, full color, 32-page five-issue
miniseries with issue #1 debuting in August.

Romero resurrected the zombie genre with his groundbreaking Night
of the Living Dead film in 1968, which played with the
conventions of the Hollywood horror film and brought a savage
ferocity to the genre.  He followed this low budget black-and-
white epic, which was shot in the Pittsburgh area, with two color
epics, Dawn of the Dead (1978) and Day of the Dead (1985).  Dawn
of the Dead was given a big budget Hollywood remake in 2004
(which also spawned a comic book), but now Romero himself is
returning to the genre with Land of the Dead, which is set years
in the future well after Romero's original Dead Trilogy.

Chris Ryall is writing the comic book adaptation of Land of the
Dead, while Gabriel Rodriguez provides the interior art.  The
first issue will sport two covers, a special photo cover and an
art cover by newcomer Chris Bolton.

Classics Illustrated 'War of the Worlds' Planned For July
 June 08, 2005
Jack Lake Productions, a Canadian publisher, is publishing a
special 50th Anniversary Edition of Classics Illustrated #124 War
of the Worlds by H.G. Wells.  The 48-page full color book has
been painstakingly recreated to do full justice to Lou Cameron's
excellent artwork, which made this comic, first published in
1955, one of the favorites of the entire series.

A hardcover edition of the book will be available for $14.99
($19.99 CDN), and a soft cover version will sell for $9.99
($12.99 CDN).

The re-issue of the Classics Illustrated War of the Worlds will
ship during the first week in July, just after the launch of the
new film version of the science fiction classic directed by
Steven Spielberg debuts on June 29th.  The book will be offered
in the next edition of Diamond's Previews and will be
distributed to bookstores via Hushion House Publishing.

Jack Lake Productions has already published 26 Classic
Illustrated Juniors, including Grimm Fairy Tales, Cinderella,
Paul Bunyan, The Ugly Duckling, The Wizard of Oz, Pinocchio and
other classics of children's literature in comic book form.

Jack Lake has also published The Story of Jesus (#129) and The
Ten Commandments (#135) from the original series, but the
publisher is using War of the Worlds to see if there is enough
interest to re-print a number of the other titles from the
original Classics Illustrated series, which consists of some 169
titles published by Alfred Lewis Kanter from 1941-1971.

'Time' Showcases Five Graphic Novels For Summer Reading
 June 08, 2005
Time Magazine's Andrew D. Arnold, who happens to be one of the
most perceptive critics (and champions) of literary graphic
novels, gets an entire page in this week's (June 13th) issue of
Time to showcase five superb graphic novel offerings from five
different publishers.

The first book Arnold discusses is Daniel Clowes' masterful Ice
Haven, published by Pantheon, an initially puzzling blend of 30
short comic strips set in a weird suburban village that somehow
coalesces into a superb and satiric portrait of our era.

Arnold's second selection goes back in time to the 1950s as
portrayed in the Little Lulu comic books written by John Stanley
and illustrated by Irving Tripp.  Dark Horse is about to publish
the fourth collection of comic books in this series--a series
Arnold recommends in toto and correctly notes is "as entertaining
and revisitable as I Love Lucy."

The other three graphic novels profiled in Time all have an
international flavor.  Joe Sacco's War's End, from the Canadian
publisher Drawn & Quarterly, continues his in-depth illustrated
reportage of the Bosnian War and demonstrates that the potential
of the graphic novel medium for displaying conflict and character
with subtlety and clarity is unrivaled even by documentary
filmmaking.

Manu Larcenet's Ordinary Victories, which won the grand prize at
France's top comic festival in Angouleme last year and is
published here in the U.S. by NBM in its ComicsLit series, also
deals frankly with the forces of history and class but its
observations are subjectively filtered through the less-than-
exemplary character of its protagonist, a burned-out
photographer.  Numerous European artists have taken "funny
animal" cartooning out of the realm of children's comics in order
to create some of the most interesting portraits of the human
condition, and Why Are You Doing This? by the Norwegian artist
Jason (published here by Fantagraphics) is one of the best
examples of this genre.

Paramount Boots 'Watchmen'
Producers Shopping Project
 June 08, 2005
Variety is reporting that Paramount has pulled the plug on the
live action feature film adaptation of Alan Moore's Watchmen.
The Watchmen project, which was originally set up at Universal in
2001, is now in what Hollywood euphemistically refers to as
"turnaround," but which could be better described as "limbo."
Producers Larry Gordon and Lloyd Levin are shopping the project,
with director Paul Greenglass (The Bourne Supremacy, aka The
Bourne Witch Project because of its abundance of shaky, headache-
inducing, hand-held camera work) to other studios.

Paramount was reportedly nervous over the film's $100 million
budget, but fans and retailers will be disappointed that the
project has been dropped by yet another studio.  Watchmen,
written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Dave Gibbons, is one of
the best-selling graphic novels of all time, a perennially strong
seller, which would likely have been able to reach an even bigger
audience with the added promotion of a major motion picture
adaptation.

New Asterix Film Greenlit
 Depardieu is Obelix Again
 June 10, 2005
Variety has reported that a third Asterix film, Asterix at the
Olympic Games, has been greenlit, with shooting scheduled to
start next March and release (first in France) in early 2007.
Gerard Depardieu will once again play Obelix; a new Asterix is
being sought.

The last Asterix film, Asterix and Obelix:  Mission Cleopatra,
was a huge hit in France ("Live Action Asterix Film Boffo in
France"), although the property owners were reportedly not happy
with it.

The books are in print in English, so if the film makes it to the
States, there will be plenty of product to sell based on media
attention.
