MOE reviews continue Name: Bite Me Fanboy DVD Publisher: Mat Nastos/Nifty Comics Email: niftycomics@niftycomics.com Website: www.niftycomics.com Comments: Wow! What a very cool independent movie. A movie that any comic book fan can embrace! A lot of great names are on the credits from Shon Bury to Mat Nastos, but let's talk about the movie storyline. The opening scene is with a lady named Rachel, she is sitting around the dinner table with her parents and her fiancee doesn't show up. Why? Because her fiancee is wearing girl panties, a green costume, mask and is pretending to be the Green Lantern. Rachel catches her fiancee and there is a hilarious situation that takes place. She is quite upset that her fiancee stood up her parents and perhaps now the engagement is off. A lot of things happen at a comic book store called Comic Relief. For lushes, they go to their local bar, for comic book aficionados they go to their local comic book store where the main clerk serves as their consultant, confidant and psychologist. The clerk takes on the same role as a bartender and listens to everyone's sob stories. This clerk doesn't have patience as a little girl keeps asking him where the Pokeman stuff is and when she comes around the 3rd time, he goes ballistic. When a little boy asks where the Pokeman stuff is, he loses it and grabs a Pikachu and sets it on fire in front of the little boy. With this movie, there is some animation thrown in here and there and the movie keeps the attention of the audience. One of my favorite characters is Raymond, he reminds me a lot of certain people I know that feel they are part of the comic book industry. Raymond's claim to fame is a 8 page back up story on the secret origin of the Red Bee. A story that has been forgotten, but yet Raymond thrives on the fact that it was published and insists that he has something else in the works. He's a real dweeb and can get very obnoxious at times. Raymond even has his eyes on Rachel and there is a bitter love triangle that takes place throughout the movie. Comic Book Relief comic book store is like any of your comic book stores, there are people hanging around looking at comics, talking shop, discussing various issues and characters, there is talk of Wally West, Barry Allen and if Hal Jordan is really dead or not. Then things get deep in the conversation as superhero relationships are compared to real relationships. I love it when this gorgeous gal discusses her favorite comic book Johnny the Homicidal Maniac over dinner. This is a geek world and the audience is welcome to this world of bewilderment. When it's 4pm on Wednesday a horde of people swarm the comic book store to pick up the new releases. Sound familiar? Comic Book Guy (of Simpson's fame) pops in and complains on the pricing of the comic books, about this time I am rolling on the floor with hysterical laughter. There is some cuts on Manga that I enjoyed and another very funny part is when this guy comes in, who has no clue on comics and tries to sell 29 boxes of Superman Wedding Album issues. He bargains and bargains with the clerk and the clerk simply tells him that he wasted his time collecting all of those issues, they're not rare and the story sucks, he doesn't want his 29 boxes of the Superman Wedding Album. Then there is fun times at the Oakland Convention Center - Wondercon and Raymond Reeves shells out a fortune to get his own table and promote his 8 page back issue story of the secret origin of the Red Bee. When his cohorts show up, there is an argument over Rachel and things almost get pretty nasty, that love triangle thing again! Excellent movie and the zillion of bloopers that is also featured in this DVD will have you laughing some more! Be on the lookout for VP Richard Vasseur's review on this very same movie, that will be featured on Jazma Online! Before you see Batman Begins, see Bite Me Fanboy first. Bite Me Fanboy will become a cult comic book classic! Name: Tales of the Champions Presents Giant August 2005 #1 Publisher: Heroic Publishing Price: $2.99 Creative Force: Wilson Hill, Chris Morrinan, J. Adam Walters Website: www.heroicpub.com Email: champions@heroicpub.com Comments: Two superb stories. The first one is called "The Return of the Giant". The scene is San Francisco. Three kids walking down the street telling jokes and before you know it, a car is flying in the air towards them. Like back in the day....Silver Age in particular, we have some spectacular superheroes. The kids witness Icestar using blasts of cold to ward off a Destructobot. On the robot is the evil Doctor Pomegranate's face on a monitor. Icestar finds himself in trouble and the kids are shocked to see Icestar fall so easily. One of the kids does the unthinkable and transforms into Giant. Giant looks for Destructobot and comes upon other robots to fight. Giant encounters a damsel in distress who he confuses for Icestar, how he did that, I'm not sure, because this lady has some killer looks. As this action packed story moves along, Giant and Icestar team up and the team up definitely has chemistry! The second story is Nemesis Girl and this lady is a red head, tall and is wearing her Daisy Dukes. Every man has an eye out for her and she goes into a bank to make a deposit with her son. While in the bank, The Flying Fox and his hoods step in and Nemesis Girl and The Flying Fox actually know each other, they have some kind of history together. Ummm..that history is that The Flying Fox had once kidnapped Nemesis Girl and her son and Nemesis Girl has never forgotten it. The battle between Nemesis Girl and The Flying Fox is quite intense. Nemesis Girl wants some payback. Nemesis Girl when she takes up a sword, wields incredible power. She says that power is her birthright, she has it and she plans to use it! Tales of the Champions Presents Giant will definitely have you sitting on the edge of your seat, just be prepared to hold on, it's going to be a wild ride! I give this comic book a standing ovation! Name: The Black Enchantress #3 July 2005 Publisher: Heroic Publishing Price: $2.99 Creative Force: Wilson Hill, Chris Morrinan, J. Adam Walters Website: www.heroicpub.com Email: licensing@heroicpub.com Comments: The scene: The Sigma Epsilon Chi Fraternity House near the campus of the University of San Francisco. There is activity...it's a Toga Party! There is some arguments about Pilar going upstairs with some boy and a fellow cheerleader chastises another cheerleader for eating too much and getting fat. Andrea checks into Pilar and her new found acquaintance. Pilar tells Jeffrey he is moving too fast. Andrea gives Jeffrey a drink and he falls into a slumber, she goes back downstairs and tells everyone that Jeffrey tried to rape Pilar. Andrea is punishing Jeffrey and Pilar tells Andrea that she would have submitted to him, but not at that time. Andrea is still adamant that Jeffrey was trying to rape Pilar and has set things in motion for Jeffrey to pay the price. This story will continue. The next story is Chapter Two: The Mystery of Psyche - Starring Demons in the Night. This story takes place in the East End of London. Psyche finds herself in a bad situation, as she confronts some thugs on the back streets of London. To let you know, I have visited the East End of London, where the Kray Twins and Jack the Ripper hung out at. Even in these modern times, the East End is a scary place. With Psyche, I hear the song "East End Girls", she is one hot red-haired babe! The hoods that she fights, she exposes them for what they are...demons. One demon becomes a broken clay statue, as Psyche places that spell on him. These demons are terrorized by Psyche aka Mrs. Julia Rose Hunter. Mrs. Hunter discusses the crime scene with the inspectors and the inspectors are baffled by the crime site, the murderous rape gang is no more. Psyche does a miraculous feat and pulls a naked girl from a tree, the girl was a victim named Ash and now Psyche will raise the girl as her own. One of the things I love about Heroic Publishing is the artwork is always outstanding in their publications and they use very bright highlighting colors that is exceptional eye-candy for the reader. Sabrina the Teenage Witch, move out of the way. Samantha of Bewitch do a vanishing act! Charmed witches zap yourselves out of here, there is a new witch in town and her name is Psyche! In this issue you get a bonus feature "The Origin of Sig!" The reader is introduced to a gorgeous evil seductress named Melissa D'Arque. You'll also meet an ebony beauty named Ch'andarra. If you love beautiful gorgeous witchy women, then The Black Enchantress is for you, I can't seem to get enough of it! Va va vooom! Name: Oddly Normal #3 of 4 Publisher: Viper Comics Price: $2.95 Creative Force: Otis Frampton Website: www.vipercomics.com Email: info@vipercomics.com Comments: Oddly Normal is the cutest little half witch ever! This comic book is oriented towards the whole family. Yep, your kids will love it! Oddly is a little curious, she tries to open a certain door and her aunt tells her never to open that door. Oddly has new friends, a very nice young hunchback boy, a green fellow and their ghostly acquaintance. They want to give Oddly a map to their secret laboratory. When Oddly sees the laboratory, she is amazed, well, heck I was amazed. It's truly an amazing sight to see, it's very well drawn and detailed. I only wonder if the hunchback boy is anyway related to Quasimodo - the Hunchback of Notre Dame and of course the green fellow is just another product of Victor Frankenstein, but was created by someone else. Nevertheless, they are quite the characters and this is fun romp into something mysterious. The reader will learn something ghostly, that non-corporeals have no parents. The experiments include messing around with a poly-morphic electrostatically enhanced non-biological life form. I love the interactions between characters, there is some cute humor thrown in. The second story - Chapter 6 - Acro Avio & Hydro (Not Necessarily in that Order) starts off as a typical day at Menagerie Middle School. Oddly and her classmates discuss good v. evil. The teacher discusses on why mankind repeat the sins of the past. After class, Oddly is challenged by a school mate, the school mate named Tamsin says...'maybe the half-breed would like to defend the family honor, by taking me on in the witch's brouhaha." Tamsin says some insults to the half witch Oddly and Oddly takes up the challenge. The Witch's Brouhaha is a rite of passage for every young witch, it's a race through snake bite canyon, high above a twisting river filled with every manner of beast. Harry Potter would LOVE this race, it involves the use of brooms and the broom Oddly uses has dual retro rockets attached! You will get to see a cool ghost dance before the race too! The broom race is absolutely incredible and did I see Harry Potter zip by too? If you loved the broom race in Harry Potter, you will love the broom race in Oddly Normal! There is action galore in this nosebleed of a race and I can't wait to see more! Oddly Normal charmed the pants right off of me! Name: Random Encounter #3 Publisher: Viper Comics Price: $2.95 Creative Force: Nicc Balce Website: www.vipercomics.com Email: info@vipercomics.com Comments: You like 2 story monsters? Well, in this story, our heroines encounter one. Is our main heroine a monster slayer? The monster, a weird spidery creature grabs our heroine and while this is happening her friend is snapping pictures and another friend of hers, takes a pot shot at the creature and gets scolded for not waiting for the appropriate signal to fire. Mona doesn't want her to give up and wants her to take out the creature once and for all, while she keeps snapping those pictures. There is some superb action and the artwork is done in black and white. The artwork is a delicate work with black ink and goes great with the story. One lady named Dreck listens to her dark side on how she should handle the situation and also listens to her good side. The good side and the dark side have their own debate and the dark side advocate tells the good side to stay out of it, it's not going to turn into another Philosophy 101 Debate! Yep, there is some cute humor in this story too! Migo, another hero in this story is on his way to the Kwik Mart to deal with the huge six legged alien. There is plenty of good action, intrigue and drama in this Manga styled comic book story! Random Encounter deserves a rave review and a rave review it shall get! Name: Dead@17 Revolution Graphic Novel Publisher: Viper Comics Price: $14.95 Creative Force: Josh Howard Website: www.vipercomics.com Email: info@vipercomics.com Comments: I have reviewed many of the Dead@17 stories, it's about a girl that goes up against the demons that serve Lord Bolabogg. Noel and Nara Kilday are the heroes of this story. The demons are known as Feeders. Heaven's Militia is out to stop the demonic invasion of Bolobogg. The Bolobogg Cult is setting up the road for Bolobogg to be successful in his invasion. One of the methods for the invasion is using the assassination attempt of Senator Victor Alcasan. Heaven's Militia is then placed on the suspect list for this assassination attempt. Could it be that Victor is Bolobogg? John Howard is the mastermind that illustrated and wrote this book. You get the whole scoop on what Dead@17 is all about in this graphic novel, if you want to jump on board and find out what the ruckus is all about, here is the book to learn about this strange reality. Dead@17 was created by a genius storyteller and artist, his name is Josh Howard! Name: Vengeance #1 Publisher: Enemi Entertainment Price: $3.00 Creative Force: John Kotsis Email: kotsis75@yahoo.com Comments: A couple on Roosevelt Island near New York City enjoy the pleasure of each other's company. Monica discusses with John about their fun night together. Monica discusses getting married, starting a family and John is feeling strange, he feels like he is being watched. John and Monica come up to a strange symbol on a slab of stone, and there is a weird guy with a gun. Monica is shot in the head and John is completely freaked out over the situation. A sinister being has seen that the warrior has risen and wants this warrior to take on the side of evil! John is being stalked at Monica's funeral by a detective. Later on John learns he has some unusual powers, large blades shoot out from his arms. John also gets a cool costume that is very dark and consumes his body. A costume that seems alive! John goes out and plays vigilante against some hoods who are terrorizing some girl. John takes out the bad guys quickly and learns about another new power, he has the power of flight. John goes back to Roosevelt Island, he looks for clues to the murder of Monica. John realizes that the mysterious symbol on a stone gave him his extraordinary powers, he now seeks answers. He wants to know who the gun man was, his role in this whole strange ordeal. John becomes an exceptional superhero and the most shocking part of this story is that Monica arises from the dead, to become something very terrifying, something very evil!! And wait until you see what Monica looks like now! Wow! Also Monica has some scary friends! John Kotsis created some unique villains and a very unique superhero! I absolutely enjoyed the artwork. John Kotsis definitely delivers the goods with Vengeance #1, I believe that this story will gather a major fanbase! Count me in! _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- [11] My View David LeBlanc ComicBkNet@aol.com http://members.aol.com/comicbknet David LeBlanc is the Editor of the Comic Book Network Electronic Magazine; which won the prestigious Eagle Award for Favorite Comic Book Ezine in 2001. He is a long-time fan of comics and the electronic media; having been the moderator of BBS comics forums on WME, FIDONET and the Comic Book Network. He and his wife live in a suburb of Worcester, MA and David works part-time at That's Entertainment, the Eisner-winning Comics and Collectibles store. David's favorite motivational phrase is: BEHOLD THE TURTLE, HE ONLY MAKES PROGRESS WHEN HE STICKS HIS NECK OUT! CAPTAIN GRAVITY AND THE POWER OF THE VRIL #5 (of 6) 32 pages, full color, $2.95/$3.60CAN Writer - Joshua Dysart Pencils - Sal Velluto Inks - Bob Almond Colors - Mike Garcia Letters - Richard Starkings & Albert Deschesne Created by Stephen Vrattos Penny Farthing Press www.pfpress.com Captain Gravity has been trying to rescue his friend, the actress Chase, from Nazi's who have uncovered the secret to the gravity powers he uses, the power of the Vril. If they gain its true power there will be no stopping them. The secret to it all is at the location of legendary Atlantis. The quest has brought him to Berlin and after the help of Ian Fleming (yes THAT Ian Fleming) he has gotten into the strange ship that is the key to the location of Atlantis. An etching from one of the worldwide locations the Nazis have been excavating is the map that points the way. Now all our hero has to do is fight off the remaining beast men left behind. In true adventure serial style the fight is spectacular. Meanwhile, Chase is with the Reich Sorcerer, who reminds me of the Red Skull except this skull head is not red and has glowing mouth, nose and eye sockets. On the Nazi sub she is being held while her traitor boyfriend is leading the Sorcerer he calls master to the final goal. Now Joshua, our hero the Captain, has to get from Berlin to Indonesia in time to stop the bad guys and save Chase. But his gravity powers can only do so much. He strikes on a radical idea for that time, something we in the space age would not marvel at. If he flies high enough into the atmosphere he can come back down far away. But can he survive in his weakened state and no way to bring enough oxygen to be sure? This penultimate chapter has all the tension, drama, action and emotion to grip you and not let go. Joshua faces images of his hopes and fears, his relation with his father, and with his mentor who is trying to contact him through a group of mediums. He is pushed to the limits of his ability to fight the good fight. This is heroic fiction at its best. And, as always with Penny Farthing Press, the art has the same high standards as equal partner in the storytelling. They even have a text article in the back simulating a gossip column about Chase and a couple of those fake ads for comic relief. This series has gotten better with each chapter and the final installment is sure to be a knockout! MUSICOMICS #26 (June 2005) 12 pages, black on colored paper, minicomic, $1 MUSICOMICS is one of a series of mini-comics from Walking Man Comics 123 Elm Street Hatfield, MA 01038 by Matt Levin walkingmancomics@msn.com This series is done in rubber stamps chosen by Matt to illustrate the lyrics of a song. This time it is "(All I Want's) A Little More Time." Sometimes the choices are not clearly about the song, but rather blend to create a feeling or style that compliments the lyric, It could be an outline of a person, a rabbit, raindrops, or a heart with legs. In this case he has put more than usual per page to increase the feel of too little room/too little time. It works. You can get a bunch of these comics at 4/$3 and a sampler by sending a first class stamp. I like them and recommend you try them. _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- [12] New Comic Book Releases List [NCRL] by Charles LePage chuck@comiclist.com http://www.comiclist.com New Comic Book Releases List for Wednesday, 06/22/2005, compiled by Charles LePage with information from Suncoast Comics.
