ONI PRESS' PENG

Oni Press has announced a September release of Peng, a new one-
shot comic from Corey Lewis. Lewis, who took the comic industry
by surprise with Sharknife, turns his unconventional eye to the
world of professional kickball, with high octane results.

Here's how the book is described:

"For Rocky Hallelujah and his friends, ADV Kickball is the
meaning of life. It1s all they talk about, practice, and play.
It1s not just a sport, it1s a way of life, and there1s no one
better at it than Rocky Hallelujah. He1ll have to prove that,
however, against three fierce teams at the ADV Kickball finals.

"Rocky Hallelujah heads up the Foot Knux, a team made up of
diversely talented players, including Sassy Elmetto and Ven
Morcada. They1re joined in the climactic playoffs by two rival
teams, and the villainous team known as the Aroura Skeddos,
fronted by the evil Jeeyuh Yeeauh."

"Kickball, for those who don1t know, is played like baseball,
but instead of a bat, you kick a large, inflated rubber ball with
your foot," Lewis said. "In Peng, the game is Advanced kickball,
which has more of a martial arts style, combined with sports
rules and points and innings.2

"Peng will be 64 black-and-white pages and will cost $5.95.

'Star Wars' Overshadowed by Japanese Comic

Jul 6, 8:54 AM (ET)

By MIN LEE
HONG KONG (AP) - Darth Vader, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are
feeling the heat at the box office from an unusual rival - a
movie based on a Japanese comic book, directed by Hong Kongers
and starring a Taiwanese pop star making his debut in the movies.
"Initial D," the story of a young street car racer, has stunned
"Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith" and the action
thriller "Mr. and Mrs. Smith," starring Jolie and Pitt, at the
Hong Kong box office.

The movie grossed $3.6 million over 10 days as of last weekend.
By comparison, the latest Star Wars installment has made just
$2.4 million over 46 days. "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" fared better,
earning $2.8 million in 25 days.

"Initial D," filmed in Japan, is a testament to the far reach of
Japanese popular culture and marks a unique cultural cross-
pollination. Some of the Chinese entertainment industry's top
creative talent teamed up to bring the work of Japanese comic
artist Shuichi Shigeno to life.

At the helm are Andrew Lau and Alan Mak - the directing duo
behind the acclaimed Hong Kong police thriller "Infernal
Affairs," which is being remade into a Hollywood film directed by
Martin Scorcese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

Leading the cast is Asian pop sensation Jay Chou, a singer-
songwriter and one of Chinese-language music industry's biggest
names.

Chou's fame also translates into instant regional appeal for the
movie, a commercial consideration director Mak said was inevitable
for a movie with a $10 million budget.

"Whether it's Taiwan, mainland China or Hong Kong, he's the
hottest singer of his age group," Mak told The Associated Press.
Rounding out the cast is veteran Hong Kong actor Anthony Wong,
local heartthrobs Edison Chen and Shawn Yue and singers Jordan
Chan and Kenny Bee. Japanese actress Anne Suzuki, who appeared in
the 1999 film "Snow Falling on Cedars" with Ethan Hawke, plays
Fujiwara's classmate and love interest, Natsuki Mogi.

NEWSFLASH! David Goyer, script writer for comic book movies
Batman Begins, the Blade trilogy, and the upcoming Ghost Rider,
has revealed more about his next project, writing and directing
The Flash movie in the New York Daily News. "Fans know there's
been more than one Flash over the years. There's been a lot of
speculation and rumor, but both Barry Allen and Wally West will
be in this movie," says Goyer, "We're going to go into the 'Speed
Force' and a lot of the cosmic aspects of the character from the
more recent past. Trust me, we're going to do a lot more than
have the Flash run on water and create vortexes. I have a guy
from M.I.T. helping me with all of this. We're going to be playing
with relativity, Doppler effects and all kinds of things like
that. Audiences will be amazed."

NEWSFLASH! Dark Horse Comics will be releasing a prequel graphic
novel for the upcoming horror movie remake of John Carpenter's
The Fog. The graphic novel, written by Scott Allie with art by
Todd Herman and a cover by Hellboy's Mike Mignola, accounts the
backstory that leads up to the film, with a group of Shanghai
traders coming to America in hopes of escaping an old Chinese
curse. Allie comments, "The film shows the fallout from a
terrible series of events. We get to tell the story of how those
people wound up in such desperate circumstances, and it gets into
the worst parts of these people's personalities, mixing visceral
horror elements with deeply conflicted characters." While
Carpenter himself affirms, "This book's a remarkable extension of
the story that Debra Hill and I created, true to the terror of
the film and the EC Comics that inspired it." The movie, which
stars Tom Welling (Smallville), Selma Blair (Hellboy), and Maggie
Grace (Lost), will then chronicle a small community's struggle to
survive by finding the secrets behind a dark force in a thick,
mysterious fog that has claimed their town. The Fog prequel
graphic novel will be released this October 5th, just over a week
in time for the movie's release on October 14th.

and feels that Glau would be natural for the role.

NEWSFLASH! The New York Post reports that X3 director Brett

story."

with horror-meister Clive Barker. With their first comic project,
The Thief of Always, up and running, IDW and Barker are looking

character.

and 30-somethings to feel inadequate! The character of Violet
Rose is a young girl with telepathic powers that allow her to
communicate with inanimate objects. For example, in her first
issue, Violet must communicate with a house to find out why bad
things have been happening. "It's such a great opportunity. I
really enjoy writing and this was a great way for me to express
myself. I am really excited to finally be in print!," says the
young star, "I've written several stories about Violet Rose and
in future comics, or maybe even novels, we will get to know her

Manga in CosmoGIRL From Tokyopop
 July 07, 2005
Tokyopop and CosmoGIRL have announced that "The Adventures of CG,"
a manga story by Svetlana Chmakova, will appear in CosmoGIRL
beginning with the August issue.  Chmakova is the artist of an
upcoming Tokyopop manga called Dramacon, which will appear in
October.

The exposure of CosmoGIRL's six million readers to comics, many
for the first time, can only be a good thing for the long-term
expansion of this rapidly growing market segment.

Lisa Kirby Announces Jack Kirby Museum and Research Center With
Randolph Hoppe and John Morrow
 July 07, 2005
Lisa Kirby, daughter of the late Jack (King) Kirby, announced the
creation of the Jack Kirby Museum and Research Center (JKMRC),
"devoted to promoting and encouraging the study, understanding,
preservation and appreciation of the work of comic book creator
Jack Kirby."  Kirby described the motivation for the Center.  "In
the years since his death in 1994, there have been a number of
high profile movies featuring properties and characters Dad
created, but he has, for the most part, not been featured in the
movies' promotion," she said.  "In that respect, my family and I
were excited by the creation of a non-profit educational
organization devoted to Dad's work."

Among the projects cited in the announcement are a complete
online catalogue of Kirby's works (using TwoMorrows' Jack Kirby
Checklist as a starting point); a Kirby biographical
presentation; and exhibits and papers in conjunction with
museums, conferences, and conventions.

The Center's work will be spearheaded by cartoonist and Web
designer Randolph Hoppe and TwoMorrow's publisher/editor John
Morrow.

The announcement also pays tribute to Kirby collaborators Joe
Simon and Stan Lee, and expresses a wish for the two to
collaborate with the Center in its work.

The announcement seems timed to coincide with the release of
Fantastic Four this weekend, based on the Lee/Kirby creation.

Clive Barker Signs Deal with IDW For 'Extended Partnership'
 July 07, 2005
IDW has announced an "extended partnership" with horror writer
Clive Barker.  Under the agreement, Barker will create new
properties for and license existing works to IDW.  The first
