X-MEN #172

[THIS REVIEW HAS SPOILERS ABOUT THE IDENTITY OF FOXX - D.L.]

The most expected surprise from this storyline is contained in this
issue of X-Men and I'll just get it out of the way -

SPOILERS! Foxx is indeed Mystique.

And here's an unexpected surprise - I actually enjoyed this issue
(which, judging by some of the other reviews and posts I've seen on
this issue isn't a common judgement).

This arc seems to be Peter Milligan settling into his role as the
writer of X-Men but, then again, Golgotha started out well and
finished
horribly, we can only hope that this ends well as this arc really is
much better than the first.

The good thing about this issue and this arc is that it doesn't appear
to be taking itself too seriously; it's a soap opera - not an epic
adventure, but a soap opera, looking at the human sides of the mutant
X-Men. This issue isn't without its faults - the constant whine of
Alex
over Lorna gets irritating, and I'm still not convinced about Bobby
and
Lorna as a couple, but, at the moment, I'm happy to see where this is
going. The cameo of Nightcrawler is a bonus, and it's good to see him
being drawn by the talented Salvador Larroca.

Salvador Larroca is one of the most underrated pencillers in comics,
and one of my favourites, but, recently, I think his work has been
lacking since he came onto Uncanny X-Men. I don't know if it's the
inks
or the pencils or colours, but it just doesn't look as good as the
fantastic art in Larocca's Fantastic Four or X-Treme X-Men. With this
issue, I think that it's made an improvement, though; I don't know if
it's the slightly more "painted" look about it, but it certainly looks
more appealing and that splash page of

SPOILERS! Mystique

is fantastic, as is his Rogue (especially on the last page - hubba
hubba).

Even though, in terms of exposure, Emma looks set to become the next
Wolverine (who, thankfully, isn't in this issue) her appearance here
works and I like Milligan's depiction of her, an Emma who isn't just a
cold hearted villain-turned-good, but a teacher who actually cares
about the staff and pupils that she has in her charge, without losing
the qualities that make the White Queen one of Marvel's best
characters.

The more cohesive universe that Joe Quesada promised is apparent here,
with Gambit taking his squad on a field trip to the local rapids (?)
due to the destruction of the danger room, which has been more or less
explained in Astonishing X-Men. I like the fact that the squad system
introduced in New Mutants and New X-Men - where every member of the
teaching staff has a squad of students to train and look after, and
the
introduction of Gambit's is definitely welcome. I like the fact that
this book keeps its story in school and shows the team members as
mentors rather than superheroes. This grounded approach helps this
character-driven story a great deal, and shows the X-Men's evolution
from the first mutants to the people helping the next mutants.

One of the things that I don't like about this title is the squad - I
think that Milligan should bring in some new people(like keep

SPOILERS! Mystique as a regular)

in order to make his time writing a more distinctive feel, at the
moment, in my eyes, this team just isn't gelling together.

At the moment, I'm enjoying this story for what it is, after all, the
drama looks set to continue.....

X-MEN: KITTY PRYDE -- SHADOW & FLAME #1

Reviewer: Al Harahap, al_harahap@comixfan.cjb.net
Story Title: Shadow and Flame, Part One: "Dragon Quest"

"Dragon-stealing, picture-taking, letter-sending ninjas..."

Script: Akira Yoshida
Pencils: Paul Smith
Colours: Christina Strain
Letters: VC's Randy Gentile
Assistant Editor: Sean Ryan
Associate Editor: Nick Lowe
Editor: Mike Marts
Editor in Chief: Joe Quesada
Publisher: Marvel Comics

For fans of: Astonishing X-Men, Uncanny X-Men, X-Men, Kabuki,
Shi.

Alas, poor Kitty! I knew her, Lockheed.

Kitty Pryde is arguably the most developed X-Men character to ever
grace their many pages of many books. She was introduced as an
early recruit, unsure of herself and her place in the world, and
grew up to be one of the most human and multifaceted X-Men in
writing - a feat very few others of Xavier's students, older or
newer, can boast. Over the years, Kitty has been blessed with many
engaging stories, from her heartbreaking romance(s) to Colossus,
to losing many of her best friends to Xavier's cause (Cypher,
Magik, Rachel Summers, Colossus too). The peak of her development
came when she had had enough of the losses and decided to leave
her X-Men family "for good" to lead a normal life, in an emotional
story that felt final and a worthy end to a character. When she
was brought back down from character heaven, I felt like it was a
rape of such a great character. So whenever there's a
post-retirement Kitty story, her character is mired in great
expectations and there are very few instances when she doesn't
come off as yet another two-dimensional X-Man caricature who will
forever suffer from being killed off/retired and brought back. Is
this book one such instance?

Kitty and pet dragon Lockheed find themselves called to Japan in
X-Men: Kitty Pryde -- Shadow & Flame or X-Men -- Kitty Pryde:
Shadow & Flame or X-Men Kitty Pryde Shadow & Flame or however the
hell it's supposed to be written. See, this is what happens when
you have to include "X-Men" in the title to sell the book, the
character's name to point out the star of the book, and a separate
story title to distinguish the book from all of the character's
other unnecessary miniseries. Anyhoo, a covert underground
operations (don't you just hate those?) tricks Kitty and Lockheed
to come to Japan under the facade of holding Puff the dragon, but
with true intentions of seeking their help because Puff has been
kidnapped by a splinter group of The Hand ninja clan called The
Path of Destiny. Phew. And if that's not enough, a mysterious
figure possibly from Kitty's past is the mastermind pulling the
strings of these events.

Scribe Akira Yoshida (Elektra: The Hand, X-Men: Age of
Apocalypse, X-Men/Fantastic Four) includes some brief cameos of
Cyclops, Wolverine, and perennial X-Men go-to person Yukio in the
forms of flashbacks, phone messages, and emails. So there's
nothing gratuitous about them, and fortunately this is for all
intents and purposes a solo Kitty story that doesn't rely too
much on the X-Men. For that, it gets credit. However, despite the
opportunity to flesh out Kitty, don't expect much character
development, because the emphasis is on the adventure/mystery
plot. Which would be fine, but the "Kitty and/or Logan goes to
exotic Japan and faces samurai and/or ninja" story already became
tedious ten X-Men Unlimited stories ago. And, yes, Ogun may be
involved.

Artist Paul Smith (The Golden Age, Leave It to Chance, Uncanny X-
Men) may be the saving grace here. Considered by many to be the
most underrated X-Men artist ever, Smith is one of those whose
runs fell between post-John-Byrne and pre-Jim-Lee, two art eras
whose popularity unfortunately overshadow others. Smith's style
is clean and crisp, and doesn't try to be flashy for the sake of
being eye-candy. Furthermore, his motions are natural, and his
fight scenes clear to follow. There are some instances where the
backgrounds feel sloppy, though, where an added inker other than
Smith himself and/or the colourist could've spruced things up.

Shadow & Flame curiously emulates a similar feel of Kitty's
regular residence, Astonishing X-men, making this book familiar
for those readers. The story is paced casually, but filled with
actual plot points and not just padding, while the art is in a
fine line style with darker, moody colours. Unfortunately, there
is very little in terms of originality, development, and impact,
making this just another in a sea of unnecessary X-Men
miniseries. Recommended only for the most diehard of Kitty and
Lockheed fans and completists.

SPOILER WARNING: Some plot details may be revealed in these
reviews!

Title: Brian Pulido's War Angel # 2
Publisher: Avatar
Writer: Brian Pulido
Penciler: Walter Geovani
Inker: Datty
Price: $ 3.50 US
Rating: 4 stars out of 5 stars
Comments: The excitement starts fast and furious with a catfight
as War Angel battles a blood sucking female vampire. These two
almost naked babes will get you excited.
It's werewolves vs vampires vs warlocks and War Angel puts
herself right in the middle of it all. She is one scheming babe.
The story can be a little hard to follow at times. The art is
beyond imaging. War Angel is hot.
You get swearing, violence, monsters, sexy babes even a lesbian.
What more could you want? This babe will turn you on and scare
you.

Title: Brian Pulido's Belladonna # 5
Publisher: Avatar
Writer: Brian Pulido
Artist: Clint Hiliski
Price: 1 star out of 5 stars
Comments:This Irish lass is drawn with big breasts and a nice
body and that's as good as this comic gets. Her battles with the
vikings are anti-climatic. The fights are lifeless. Even seeing
Belladonna go to join her her family and lover it has no emotion.
It is like it's over so what who cares.
The story needed to drawn you in more. The poses where boring.
Except for her huge breasts she is not shown off well at all.

Title: Day of Vengeance # 3
Publisher: DC
Writer: Bill Willingham
Penciler: Ron Wagner
Inker: Dexter Vines
Price: $ 2.50 US, $ 3.50 Can
Rating: 3 stars out of 5 stars
Comments: The Blue Devil shines in this issue. He is well drawn as
a blue devilish creature and his heroism comes through. His
darker look makes him even tougher looking.
Captain Marvel and the Spectre's fight is mostly in the
background. Even so Captain Marvel's fight is one of mental
effort as much as muscles, his will to continue keeps him going
and this comes through in the story and art. Plus some help from
the Enchantress as she channels donated magical energy into
Captain Marvel. It is great to see heroes, villains, any one with
even a trace amount of magic donating it to Captain Marvel.
The Blue Devil uses his brains if his magic trident can't send
Eclipso to Hell he can still stick it in her guts. Sometimes a
non magical solution works.
Having this rag tag team work more as a team would make the
series work better.

Title: Gravity # 1
Publisher: Marvel
Writer: Sean McKeever
Penciler: Mike Norton
Inker: Jonathan Glapion
Price: $ 2.99 US, $ 4.25 Can
Rating: 3 stars out of 5 stars
Comments: Gravity just turned eighteen, he's new in town and
already he's messing up. But he learns quick and takes advantage
of any opportunity. Gravity is written nice and light and airy.
He is upbeat, cheerful. He is brimming with enthusiasm. Its dulled
somewhat by his unsuccessful attempts to help people. Than he
makes a new friend an attractive girl and he's on cloud nine
again.
Gravity's costume of blue and white looks sleek. The use of his
powers is illustrated well. Black Death the first villain he
meets is colored in black and white. His costume stands out well.
This super-hero has big hopes. So does this series. But it's
going to have to get more of a story and more into Greg's life
and feelings instead of just surface emotions.

Title: Wolverine # 29
Publisher: Marvel
Writer: Mark Miller
Penciler: John Romita Jr.
Inker: Klaus Janson
Price: $ 2.50 US, $ 3.50 Can
Rating: 4 stars out of 5 stars
Comments: Action packed isn't even close to describing the start
of this comic. Wolverine vs a thousand Hand ninjas. He plows into
them with a giant Sentinal robot and starts hacking away. The art
showing all this action is intense. Wolverine vs a thousand
ninjas they don't stand a chance.
It was a nice set up having Elektra as the new Queen of the
Hand. Elektra is hot looking. She makes a beautiful slaughtering
machine. Team her with Wolverine and you need to bring lots of
body bags. These two work well together in this story about
taking down the Hand organization.
For unparalleled outright animal violence mixed in with killer
skills this is the place.

Title: Marvel Knights Spider-Man # 15
Publisher: Marvel
Writer: Reginald Hudlin
Pencilers: Billy Tan & Mark Buckingham
Inkers: Jon Sibal & Mark Buckingham
Price: $ 2.99 US, $ 4.25 Can
Rating: 3 stars out of 5 stars
Comments: The Punisher looks good shooting the Absorbing Man.
He's wearing some cool shades. But why is he after the Absorbing
Man?
Ethan (Sentry) is now going to be trained by Peter ( Spider-
Man), Spidey has a side kick. This issue shows us Sentry's origin
story and it could not be more similar and more of a rip off of
Superman's if it tried. He seems to have most if not all of the
powers of Superman. Well having Spidey training him could lead to
some funny moments.

Title: Last Hero Standing # 2
Publisher: Marvel
Writer: Tom Defalco
Penciler: Pat Olliffe
Inker: Scott Koblish
Price: $ 2.99 US, $ 4.25 Can
Rating: 2 stars out of 5 stars
Comments: It is nice to see all the young and old heroes working
together. Showing Captain America slipping due to his age though?
He should be able to retire more gracefully from active crime
fighting. Spider-Girl is drawn sexy and she is like her old man
in her attitude.
The villain behind all the super-heroes kidnapping is revealed.
The God of Mischief is back! Loki stands tall. His plan to
destroy the Avengers that he inadvertently created. Loki is a
villain worthy to face all these Avengers and heroes. But how
does he plan to destroy the Age of Heroes? Loki is colored
brightly as he steps from the shadows his is a commanding
presence.

Title: Last Man Standing # 3
Publisher: Marvel
Writer: Tom Defalco
Penciler: Pat Olliffe
Inker: Scott Koblish
Price: $ 2.99 US, $ 4.25 Can
Rating: 2 stars out of 5 stars
Comments: The battle of Avengers vs Dark Trolls actually is very
boring. To much talk and not enough action. Spider-Girl's
richocet action looks good but that's the only move worth seeing.
Loki's machinations bare fruit. He sets hero against hero. Well
this is a poor plot to use to destroy the Age of Heroes. Heroes
have always fought each other and they have survived. Couldn't
Marvel Comics come up with something better?
You would think with all these heroes the comic would have to
be somewhat interesting but its not.

Title: Uberbabe # 1
Publisher: Sugarlab Corp.
Writer: Lisa Voldeng
Artists: Rebecca Dart, Fish Griwkowsky, Gerry Fournier
Musical direction and select vocals by: DJ Cody Lee Williams
Rating: 3 stars out of 5 stars
Comments: This comic comes along with its own CD. So you get a
story, art and music. The music is a strange mix with lots of
weird sounds.
The story starts out with a small boy accidentally hitching a
ride on a plane. The art has a definite manga feel to it.
A young woman is found naked by a nun. She is taken to an
insane asylum to be treated. The story is of this poor girl who
is restrained and drugged. You can see she is confused, afraid
and the doctors do nothing to help her.
The music CD is distracting and makes it hard to concentrate on
the story. The music is enjoyable. It is just hard to listen to it
and still think and read.
The girl's doctor names her Uberbabe and upon his death she is
released. To walk a war torn countryside. The art is fairly simple
for the backgrounds and her. As she wonders the battle grounds she
comforts the soldiers as they die. While a floating dog watches.
Why does she do this? Who is Hildegard, why does she kiss
Uberbabe? Why is that dog following her?
Hitler makes his appearance and the Uberbabe comes under his
watchfulness. She is under Goebbel's spying eyes as well. Ula
(Uberbabe) is drawn sexy in her bath tub and her white cat looks
cute and mysterious. Hitler has become infatuated with her.
Uberbabe (Dr. Evelyn Masters) does give a nice little speech
about super-heroes and the way they are evolving with our
technologies. Dr. Tanis Fletcher (Danger Cat) and Dr. Evelyn
Masters are shown in a fantastic drawing were they are about ready
to go for each others throats. There anger is captured perfectly.
Later the two women get into a catfight. Each has their weapon of
choice Sai vs Sword. Uberbabe's sword moves countering Danger
Girl's sai's. Uberbabe's groin kick is well illustrated. Danger
Girl's expression of pain is clear to see.
Than we go to a field in Jerusalem with Jesus, Uberbabe, Danger
Girl and a male amphibian are there. But why? A lot of the story
is confusing. It is not explained good enough what is going on.
The Uberbabe pencils in the back of the comic are hot she does
look super. Her costume design shows imagination.
So Uberbabe's tale of her adventures is a surreal ride that will
stimulate your eyes and ears. Uberbabe is a hot sexy super babe
and much more.

Title: The Venger: Dead Man Rising # 1
Publisher: Ronin Studios
Writer: Matthew Spatola
Artist: Jason Ossman
Price: $ 2.00 US
Rating: 3 stars out of 5 stars
Comments; It starts off slow and to wordy. Than it slowly picks
up. The look back showing Venger (Alexander Cabot) and his old
teammates was nicely drawn. It has a retro quality to it. The
black and white and grey scale art work well with it.
In the present Andrea is drawn showing her off to perfection.
And Black Mercy is drawn beautifully as she takes down Detective
Mike Cabot. Her moves are choreographed to show her moving
smoothly.
The story is about a detective and his father. With crime up
and a super villain possibly returning will the son become the
new Venger? The story leaves a lot of unanswered questions. It
doesn't really have a direction yet for you to follow it only
hints at one. Basically this issue introduces the main characters
and provides some hints as to what might possibly happen in
future issues.
Black Mercy is an exciting villainesses, Venger shows potential
but we never get into the character enough. The brief glimpses
though are of a hero to inspire and bring fear to criminals.
so keep following this comic it looks as if it will just keep
getting better and better. For beautiful babes, crime and action
make sure you pick up an issue.

Title: The Gift # 2
Publisher: Image
Writer: Raven Gregory
Penciler: Rich Bonk
Price: $ 2.99 US, $ 3.75 Can
Rating: 4 stars out of 5 stars
Comments: Enoch The Ancient One used to be a sheep herder until
he received the Gift. The Grim Reaper gives us the low down on
Enoch. Knowing that he was once just a human in some ways seems
to lessen his enigmatic nature. Though knowing that he is now
beyond being just human has you wondering what is he now.
Death comes for The Ancient One. The art showing Death is a
horrifying masterpiece. Their fight unleashes power undreamt of.
Does the Ancient One really have the power to kill Death?
For a change this issue no one was given the power of the Gift.
Rich Bonk shows a talent for drawing buildings. For all the
characters except Enoch he imbues them with life. Enoch though
seems lifeless.
The scene of the Grim Reaper killing the fly was cute.
The Ancient One you do not want to miss. His plan is still
going strong. No one is stopping this guy!

Title: Green Lantern # 2
Publisher: DC
Writer: Geoff Johns
Penciler: Carlos Pancheco
Inker: Jesus Merino
Price: $ 2.99 US, $ 4.00 Can
Rating: 5 stars out of 5 stars
Comments: This series is done with a mature feel to it. Green
Lantern is an adult, he's not just playing hero. And he respects
authority.
The blue suited alien as he continues on towards the air force
base is shown as a ruthless murdering killer. He also has the
power to back it up with.
Than a Manhunter android escapes from air force custody. All
hell breaks loose. The fists and energy fly as Hal and the
Manhunter pound each other. The art is magnificent showing off
their battle.
Abin Sur's ship has been reconstructed and rebuilt, that was an
unexpected turn. It's design is a scientific wonder it could not
have been drawn better.
This issue is full of surprises as the blue suited alien joins
the battle. He is revealed to be a updated Manhunter. Hal is in
for a battle.
This issue has great art and a great story. Whether your a fan
of Green Lantern or just of plain good old comic books you'll
love this.

SPOILER WARNING:
THE FOLLOWING COLUMN MAY REVEAL SIGNIFICANT PORTIONS OF THE PLOTS
OF SOME COMIC BOOKS, OR THE ENTIRE STORY. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Name: Deus Vitae Vol. 3
Publisher: Tokyopop
Price: $9.99
Creator: Takuya Fujima
Comments: There is a lot of great artwork that details scenery
and characters. Takuya is a master artist. The main character is
Ash and Ash and his company overcome an ambush from some radicals
and later meet up with some important people at the head office
of RE-O. This is sci-fi action at its best. Let's say some
shadowy group is trying to control people's minds when they gaze
at the moon. Besides all of this, Lemiu (a friend of Ash) has
learned a terrible secret about Ash's past and there is an attack
of the Selenoids and mankind is in peril. This story moves with
fierce intensity!

Name: Get Backers Vol. 6
Publisher: Tokyopop
Price: $9.99
Writer: Yuya Aoki Art: Rando Ayamine
Comments: One hero named Ginji must battle and confront the
diabolical Dr. Jackal. More heroes named Ban & Shido must go up
against two brothers that have altered their bodies drastically
to make themselves stronger. The brothers are known as the Magami
Brothers and they terrorize the streets, because they can! There
is some detailed character profiles in this story. Lots of
explosions, lots of action. Mediocre manga artwork.

Name: Battle Vixens Vol. 7
Publisher: Tokyopop
Price: $9.99
Creator: Yuji Shiozaki
Comments: Young Ryubi has the reputation of being a powerful girl
with Amazon strength. Hakufu meets Ryubi and learns that her
legendary strength is not all what it lives up to be, she is not
the ferocious fighter as many people think she is, also she likes
to goof off more at the hot springs. Ryubi after being exposed
for what she is, gets lost in her own thoughts and while
wandering the landscape, she comes across a woman that actually
fishes for dragons! The artwork is average and this is basically
a good fantasy action tale.

A message from Ash, Ginji and Ryubi. Ash: Read Deus Vitae before
reading anything else. Ryubi: That's crazy Ash, they should all
read Battle Vixens first. Ginji: Hello, how about Get Backers,
being first? Ash: You don't need to see the Summer Blockbuster
movies like George Romero's Land of the Dead, Fantastic Four, War
of the Worlds or Batman Begins, because Deus Vitae has it all!
Ginji and Ryubi: Is this guy Ash nuts or what??

wasn't impressed with Batman Begins.  The story was incredibly
slow.  I can't see Christian Bale as the new incarnation of
Batman.  Since when does Batman fly?  The new Batmobile was
pretty cool.  Batman was trained as a Ninja...hmmm.  As for HG
Well's War of the Worlds, this movie had me going and I found
myself sitting on the edge of my seat.  Steven Spielberg does it
again!   Below are some letters to the editors that I wrote from
comic books I recently purchased:

Jack Staff #8:
I can't believe all of the great stuff in Jack Staff #8.  You
could easily do a spin-off with your other characters like
Detective Inspector Maveryk and Becky Burdock - Vampire Reporter!
I love those added treats in this comic book.  The Freedom
Fighters...Sgt. States, Blazing Glory, Jack Staff and Tommy
Twister have themselves tied up with the diabolical Brainhead and
I found myself anxiously awaiting to see how they will get out of
this capture.  Brainhead is a real madman with the looming shadow
of Nazinism in the mix...a madman that wants everyone to call him
Hasslicher Kleiner Mann!  There was plenty of great drama, humor
and action in all of the stories and I got a kick out of Becky as
she is being praised as the bringer of the night and she tells
the undead to piss off, now there is a girl with spunk!

Jim Valentino's Blacklight #1:
Jim Valentino has created some great comics in the past and now
he has Blacklight #1 hitting the stands!  Instead of having the
story in some major city like San Francisco or New York, the
story starts off in the crotch of Ohio - Rivertown.  The artwork
had me dazzled and I think Blacklight is a very sexy
superheroine, I love that costume!  A man could fall in love with
a blue girl!  Now that is a new one that I never heard of...sound
fu, which can cause the popping of eardrums.  Yikes!  That must
hurt!  I love the way Blacklight is introduced and watching her
get used to her powers.  She is baffled on what she can do and
when her costume automatically covers her body, she is worried
that people can see her boobs.  I had to laugh at that one!  This
definitely looks like a hit!
