X-MEN: THE END - HEROES AND MARTYRS #5
Reviewer: Brian Wilkinson, bewilkinson@yahoo.ca
Story Title: X-Men: The End - Heroes and Martyrs

Who's your daddy?!?

Written by: Chris Claremont
Art by: Sean Chen
Cover by: Greg Land
Inker: Sandu Florea
Colors by: Avalon's Ian Hannin
Letters by: Dave Sharpe
Assistant Editors: Andy Schmidt, Stephanie MOore
Editor: Tom Breevort
Editor In Chief: Joe Quesada
Publisher: Marvel Comics

If you believe the first page of this issue, and the last few
pages of the one prior, then you have a ton of expectation and
you've barely even gotten into the book.

Long story short, Sinister claims to be Gambit's father. What's
more, he feels that the X-Men are doomed (most likely something
to do with the attacks by the Shi'ar/Skrulls, and the return of
the Phoenix) and is doing what he can to ensure that something
survives.

And if you believe THAT, I have a bridge you can buy. Cheap.

Still, I was curious from the start. What's more, since the
beginning of this series I was eager for this book to come out. I
enjoyed each and every issue, but somehow this book just had more
flavour and appeal. Is Gambit the long-rumoured third summer's
brother?

Well, that question is answered. But I won't tell you what it is.

Suffice to say, how this story is handled is fantastic. This has
to be the best issue I've read of any X-Men series in quite some
time. I absolutely adored the flashback sequence to Sinister's
origins, the tie-ins to Apocalypse, and it's relevance to the
here and now. It takes so many key components scattered over more
than a decade of storytelling and shapes them wonderfully. It's a
satisfying read in a way that few 28-page comics can achieve.

For all of this brilliance, though, it's still hard to see where
this newfound information will fit into the canon of the X-Men,
as well as the direction of Chris Claremont's epic. The only
guarantee for myself at this point is that I'm much more
interested now in seeing where the chips will fall.

A nice touch was a one-off showing the captured quartet of
Wolverine, M, X-23 and Marvel Girl. It allowed Claremont to
squeeze in Emplate, Fantomex, and Seraph into the story without
worrying about having to do anything more with them. These
characters appear as sort of a dream state, but it's a nice touch
to see them. I'm particularly curious as X-23 and Fantomex appear
to have a relationship of some sort as well as a daughter.
Interesting approach, as both are products of government
manipulations.

The rest of the issue holds up just as well. Typically dream-
state-snap-out-of-it scenarios don't work for me, but for some
reason this time it was more effective. Perhaps because Claremont
didn't take a whole issue, and also perhaps it was couched by
Gambit's actions against Sinister.

What I appreciated was that the action here wasn't blind or
aimless. It was a series of individuals fighting against what
they knew was wrong for a greater good. It put Gambit and
Wolverine in particular in the spotlight and at the heart of what
it is that makes them the heroes that they are.

There were a few surprises too, such as the one I predicted
before about Dani Moonstar and her insistent invoking of Hela as
she died. As well, we see where the Neverland concentration camp
made famous in Weapon X finally ended up.

There's a lot to chew on here, more so than any issue of this
series before. I think it's safe to say that everything has been
set up, and now it's time to push the chain of dominos over.

Sean Chen's art also seems to bounce back here after slightly
lacking in previous issues. His backgrounds and characters are
sharper than ever, and the resemblance between Sinister and
Gambit is played off well. Chen also tackles the dream sequence
panels nicely so that even though the characters who appear there
aren't expressly stated, it's easy to see who they are.

Heroes & Martyrs took longer to get going than the previous book,
but as it heads towards the conclusion I'm much happier with the
way it's coming together. It still remains to be seen how all of
this is going to come together with that final issue, but my
confidence has been boosted by this issue.

Title: G.R.A.V.E. GRRRLS: Destroyers  Of The Dead # 1
Publisher: Midnight Show
Writer: Scott Licina
Artist: Ken W. Wolak
Price: $ 2.99 US
Rating: 5 stars out of 5 stars
Comments: When the zombies appear they are disquieting looking.
Blood and rotting flesh are vividly shown in rich colors. As Boom
Boom goes into action the bullets fly in all out action. The blood
and guts make a gory mess. Boom Boom's facial expressions are
clearly illustrated. They are well done.
The 'Born Again' Chip started this all when it was sabotaged.
Now zombies roam free.
Suzi Sioux is in a really cool pose as she lands on her
backside. She is drawn with grave as she moves dealing death to
the unliving. She is surrounded by insane looking, gory, maniacal
zombies that just want to eat her.
Suzi Sioux and Boom Boom are two sexy as hell babes that can
kick butt.
The Preview of "Project Born Again" has the zombies escaping.
They are putrid looking. They are out, they are gross and there
coming for you.
If you want hot babes, killer zombies and gore galore you'll be
right at home here. So sit back relax and enjoy. But watch out
for that pool of blood!

Title: G.R.A.V.E. GRRRLS: Destroyers Of The Dead # 2
Publisher: Midnight Show
Writer: Scott Licina
Artist: Ken W. Wolak
Price: $ 2.99 US
Rating: 5 stars out of 5 stars
Comments: Suzi Sioux can really kick butt and rip zombies apart.
The gore and blood are all over the place. Suzi is beautiful. As
the zombies attack they start biting and one chomps down good on
her cute butt. Suzi is definitely not squeamish as she gets
covered in blood.
Kamikazee is introduced this issue she is a mysterious figure.
As zombies attack a concert we see the flesh being ripped off
people, bare bones are exposed. It's gross all the blood and
guts. Than Kamikazee attacks. The two page spread of her going
through the skylight her throwing stars already flying it is a
spectacular drawing. As she launches into the fight she is drawn
moving with a easy flowing movement. Every punch or kick explodes
a zombie head. These zombies are rotting messes. She finds out
that Suzi Sioux's father just may be behind the rash of zombie
outbreaks. Why would any sane person want to do that? Who knows,
but while they do it we get to see a few sexy babes kick some
zombie butt.
The "Evilman" preview has a little guy that looks a bit like a
combination of Slimer and Mr. Peanut but with a sadistic side. He
gives us the low down on zombies. He is a strange little fellow
who just enjoys eating zombie brains.

Title: Batgirl # 65
Publisher: DC
Writer: Anderson Gabrych
Penciler: Pop Mhan
Inker: Cam Smith
Price: $ 2.50 US, $ 3.50 Can
Rating: 4 stars out of 5 stars
Comments: Aw Cassandra looks so cute having a bubble bath.
Cassandra decides she wants to know who her mother is. Batman
doesn't know so she goes to Cain her father. Everyone suspects
who her mother is but Cain can tell her for sure. But after she
beats him to a bloody pulp he still doesn't tell her. So she
gives him his father's day card and leaves him with a smile on
his face. He is sick. But he still loves his daughter. Cassandra
is determined though to find out who her mother is and she will
not stop till she knows. Her determination comes through in her
actions and words.
The art shows Batgirl off wonderfully. Her body moves with such
grave. Each movement is shown as a thing of beauty. Cain the big
bad assassin is shown as a tough guy as he just takes the
beating. The final one page pin-up of Cain a loving father laying
bloody on the floor does bring across a father's love for his
daughter.
Batgirl is a dynamic young girl.

Title: Legion of Super-Heroes # 7
Publisher: DC
Writer: Mark Waid
Penciler: Barry Kitson
Inkers: Art Thibert & James Pascoe
Price: $ 2.99 US, $ 4.00 Can
Rating: 4 stars out of 5 stars
Comments: The best part about the LSH is the way they work
together. Cosmic Boy acts like an over protective father. Brainiac
5 is like the brother-in-law who wants to run the family.
Triplicate Girl is like the squealing tattle tale daughter.
Brainiac 5's home world is attacked. The populace is left
virtually brain dead from some sort of virus infection. Brainy
though will not let it effect him through sheer strength of will.
He is going to save his people. His determination could not be
shown any better.
The team with all its diverse people make for an entertaining
read. The art as usual is great. Al Brainiac 5's race are well
shown as infected zombie like victims.
  Long Live the Legion!

Title: New Avengers # 6
Publisher: Marvel
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
Penciler: David Finch
Inker: Danny Miki
Price: $ 2.25 US, $ 3.25 Can
Rating: 3 stars out of 5 stars
Comments: The faces are drawn with a life like quality. Spider-
Man and Spider-Woman are really drawn well.
The team find some S.H.I.E.L.D. agents maybe rogue ones
illegally mining vibranium in the Savage Land. The S.H.I.E.L.D.
Helicarrier shows up and blows up all the rogues and nearly the
Avengers to. So the Avengers are going to take on the villainous
S.H.I.E.L.D. agents they just have to find out who they are.
The rogue S.H.I.E.L.D. agents also have 14 super villains. So
the suspense as to who they are is there. The evil Black Widow
might just lead them.
We needed more action. Also less picking on Wolverine.
Classifying him as a homicidal maniac just isn't right. Wolverine
is civilized. And giving the Avengers someone besides
S.H.I.E.L.D. as their villain would be better. Watching Iron
Man's armor do a long drawn out countdown was boring.
The team though overall does work well together. The team
dynamics make the comic enjoyable.

SPOILER WARNING:
THE FOLLOWING COLUMN MAY REVEAL SIGNIFICANT PORTIONS OF THE PLOTS
OF SOME COMIC BOOKS, OR THE ENTIRE STORY. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Name: The Venger: Dead Man Rising #1
Publisher: Ronin Studios
Written by: Matthew Spatola
Art & Letters by: Jason Ossman
Price: $2.00
Email: vengercomics@aol.com
Comments:  This is most incredible!  There is a new hero in town
and his name is The Venger!  First off, I love the artwork in
this comic book, it's detailed nicely.  Matthew has a fantastic
imagination and in this story, there is talk of 'back-in-the-day'
superheroes like Agent America, Jack Lantern and Phantasma.
Superheroes that have great costumes, great powers and have
drama in their lives like any other normal human.  One of the
superheroes is deceased, because he died of cancer.  In the city
where this story takes place the crime scene escalates at an
alarming rate.  Police Chief Gary Donahue and the mayor, just
call it a statistical anomaly, sort of how the mayor in the movie
"Jaws" tried to dismiss the great white shark attacks as a fluke,
because they were wanting the tourism to continue.  In The
Venger, the Police Chief and Mayor are in cahoots to keep these
crime statistics under low profile.  You want to jump into the
comic book and wring their necks!  Crime after crime after crime,
like the hideous murder of Father Kauffman that shocks the city.
Yes, this city is in crisis.  There is boo coo action and the
words..."officer down" will echo through your mind as you see a
sexy lethal black clad outfitted woman wreck havoc amidst this
city of turmoil.  There must be justice, there must be a way to
handle this madness, this city cries out for The Venger!  The
Venger is wholly gripping!  Wonderfully complex, but compulsively
readable.  The Venger crackles with energy and invention!  Yep,
this baby is a doozie!

Name: Ultimate X-Men #60
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Creative Force: Vaughan - Immonem - vonGrawbadger
Price: $2.99
Email: Ultimateoffice@marvel.com
Comments:  It's hard to imagine a wheel chair bound Yuri,
becoming so lethal in Ultimate X-Men #60.  Dr. Cornelius is the
embodiment of evil.  He is so filled with hatred for mutants, he
is willing to create a lethal warrior out of Yuri.  He has had a
lot of time studying mutants, reeking with hatred for them.
Wanting and desiring revenge on Ororo.  And now is willing to
invest his time and money in making Yuri, the ultimate bionic
woman!   Another thing that was hard to imagine is that Yuri will
surpass Wolverine in power.  Wolverine, a man who maintains a
close relationship with Storm, must be taken down too!  Yuri
didn't have nothing to lose, knowing that this surgery was
untested on humans and her life could be in jeopardy.  I loved
the battle between Yuri and Wolverine, the way Yuri uses her
lethal claws was awesome!  Yuri mentions that she wants to cut
off the head of Wolverine and Storm.  I wonder if she was able to
carry out the mission of cutting Wolverine's head off, would he
actually have died?  Or could someone place his head back on his
shoulders and would it heal again?  Yuri's claws seem far more
lethal than Wolverine's claws and her healing power is much
faster than Logan's healing powers.  I must admit Yuri scares me!

Name: Lorelei: Building the Perfect Beast Vol. 1 (Graphic Novel)
Publisher: Star Warp Concepts
Created and Written by: Steven A. Roman
Art by: David C. Matthews and Kevin Tuma
Price: $9.95
Email: starwarpco@aol.com
Website: www.starwarpconcepts.com
Comments:  Wow!  This is one hot red-haired demoness!!  Lorelei
is a knock-out and if you're a bad guy, you're in big trouble,
because this Succubus will take away your soul!  The cover blows
me away, it depicts Lorelei in all of her beautiful splendor!
This very nice graphic novel comes with information on the
creative team that is an enjoyable read.  The story begins eerily
enough, as things take place at a funeral.  A great way to start
off any horror story!  I can see Fangoria getting a kick out of
this graphic novel, because there are some very scary scenes in
this book!  Like a pizza delivery guy who goes up to the door and
is instantly snatched away.  Then a character named Laslo Thorne,
a motel manager opens up the door to one of his rooms and
discovers a grisly sight, 3 decayed corpses around a table.  The
artwork is absolutely incredible and realistic!  You will see
anything and everything in this book, how about a very sensual
woman in lingerie who hitches a ride with a truck driver...what
will happen next?  Hmmm...you better check out this story and
find out yourself!  There is some adult nudity in this book, so I
would not recommend this book for the kiddies.  The nudity is
done with class.  Marlane a sexy exotic dancer is abducted,
chained and finds herself part of a ritual.  Talk about drama and
superb horror, it's all here in Lorelei!  Lorelei is exciting,
horrific, provocative and very entertaining, this is far and away
the best horror comic book I have seen in a long, long time!
Rousing with a page turner of a plot, when it comes to horrific
chills, no one does it better than Steven A. Roman.  Clive Barker
would be proud!

Name: The Middle Man #1
Publisher: Viper Comics
Created and Written by: Javier Grillo-Marxuach
Illustrated by: Les McClaine
Website: www.vipercomics.com
Price: $2.95
Comments:  I have to give The Middle Man a big fat star!  Very
enjoyable read!  Things happen at A.N.D. Laboratories.  Don't ask
me what A.N.D. stands for.....you'll have to find out yourself.
Let's just say that they slice and dice around with DNA.  The
temp receptionist over there is acting very professional while
havoc is happening behind her.  She only stops acting
professionally when a hideous multi-eyed - mutated DNA garbled -
tenacle creature grabs a hold of her.  Then out of nowhere, a hero
appears.  His name is Middle Man and he destroys the creature and
tells the temp to keep her mouth shut, or he will have to kill
her.  The cover story is that they had a gas main explosion.
Another slice of this story, deals with the mob and the reader
learns that the whole Spadoni Organization was whacked.  But, who
did the whacking?  It wasn't rival gang member Don Colfari.  Then
all of a sudden, there is another mob hit (or should I say
hits?).  The artwork in this comic is over-the-top and the story
is fun, intriguing and adventurous.  Wendy Watson, the temp is
kind of cute, as she sings the Shaft song.  Wendy's life makes a
dramatic turn....she learns that she has passed the temp test to
work for no other than the Middle Man!  The Middle Man shines
brightly, I can't see this comic dimming out!

MOE Sidenote:  Went to A1 Comics and entered the A1 Comics
Stargate and here are some of the realities I encountered: Ocean
#6 of 6 by Wildstorm; Son of Vulcan #2 by DC; Twilight Experiment
#6 by Wildstorm; Villains United #2 by DC; Bone Rest - A World's
End #1 by Image; Hunter Killer #3 by Top Cow; Strange Girl #2 by
Image; Heavy Metal Summer 2005; Shonen Jump August 2005.  I heard
some bad things from the critics that Fantastic Four was not up
to par.  Well, tonight I went to UA Arden Theatre and saw
Fantastic Four and enjoyed it immensely.  I enjoyed watching how
they got their powers and how they learned to adapt to their
powers.  I enjoyed their battle with Doctor Victor Von Doom.  The
action and special effects was incredible.  Yes!  I want more!
Below are 3 comics I purchased and my letter to the editor:

Michael Turner's Fathom #2:
Fathom #2 truly was a page turner.  Knowing a major crisis is
going on kept me right on the edge of my seat.  A city under
siege is nerve racking drama.  Koi Turnbull is quite incredible
with his penciling.  Each drawing kept me in awe!  I loved the
detailed explanation of the creation of Blue, humans and Black.
They all practically have the same origin and yet they are so
different.  Aspen received a shocker, that her father was a Black
and her mother was a Blue.  Fathom is intriguing drama at its
finest!  In the world of science fiction, science fiction becomes
science fact.  I am working on a "Cell Phone Radius Detector".
This device on my telephone will enable me to come 20 yards of a
computer monitor and detect what is on the screen, it will also
enable me to point the device to a cell phone 20 yards away and
obtain the cell phone number of a person holding their telephone
(a good way to pick up on chicks and getting their number).
Anyway with my new device, I will use it first to obtain the
plot finale of this Fathom story and when Michael Turner leaves
his office, I will point my cell phone to his and tell him what a
great story it was!

Army of Darkness #4 - Shop Till You Drop Dead - Dynamic Forces:
Ash sure gets tossed around to various timelines and alternate
realities, this time he is tossed 500 years in the future by the
Deadites and finds himself in a twisted video game.  A video game
in which he has to deal with a digital Army of the Undead!
Sometimes I wonder how Ash survives it all, but the man keeps
going and going and going, like the Everready Bunny.  Army of
Darkness #4 - Shop Till You Drop Dead was horrific fun!  I had
some great laughs, like when Ash says...'wait just a Roddenberry
minute'!  Then I got a kick seeing Ash do the Terminator naked
scene as he is zapped butt naked to Detroit, Michigan at a S-Mart
parking lot.  Then the Geico reference was hilarious!  With all
of the great drama, the superb horror, you have some great
comical scenes and seeing Ash as Elvis was comedy at its best!  I
am truly looking forward to the Herbert West and Ash encounter!
I know this will be a smash crossover.  One of the crossovers I
am dying to see is Ash v. Leatherface, because Ash is good with
his chainsaw and so is Leatherface!  I have always wondered who
would win!

Tenth Muse 03:
My hat is off to Alex Amezcua on his amazing penciling.  The
artwork was dynamic!  Tenth Muse 03 was everything I wanted and
more!  We get a taste of what the power source of the Muse is.
We hear that a sword can kill the essence of the Muse.  This
issue had many beautiful women.  Seeing Judo Girl in this issue,
had me smiling.  What is so great about the Tenth Muse it all
ties to Greek mythology, to Zeus, Hera and the rest of the godly
clan,  I had a laugh at the Hobbit reference, that short guy did
look like a Hobbit and then I almost flipped seeing a connection
in this story to Dr. Jeckle and Mr. Hyde!  Now I am anxiously
awaiting to see what will happen next!  Another thing I will
mention, if my great uncle Clement Valtille of the French Foreign
Legion was still alive, he would love this story, because he was
a great fan of Robert Louis Stevenson!  By the way, when Rena
Mero passes the torch to the new Tenth Muse, let it be Paris
Hilton!

There is a supernatural being, a succubus named Lorelei, who hunts
for souls not blood. She drains her victims of their life force
like a vampire drains blood - but her victims stay dead. This is
the beginning of the story but it involves a young female
photographer, Laurel Ohara, on the verge of a career boost. Her
unique works, including some controversial photos of female
strippers, bring her fame and notoriety. Now some powerful people
in the TV business are helping her with the promise of major
exposure, for ratings of course. They and other people she meets
in the course of this first chapter have dark secrets of their
own. Make no doubt this is classic horror that emphasizes
characterization.

Lorelei must be an ancient character. We see what must be her
current incarnation travelling the city while luring victims with
her feminine charms. The tie in to Laurel begins with the
disappearance of a stripper named Marlene. A co-worker, Jasmine
is Laurel's roommate. We know that Marlene was abducted for a
ritual and the success results in another taking over Marlene's
body. Now the man behind it all, Arioch, is introduced to Laurel
at a gallery event as is the TV executive. All these players are
trying to manipulate people and events for their own purpose and
Laurel and Jasmine have no idea about the magnitude of the evil
they are being drawn toward.

This is a very well written story with enough gruesome horror
throughout to set the tone. But the strength is in the characters.
Steven takes his time to show us their way of life, their passions
and foibles. They are not just players with parts. Things laid out
early on start to join other plots slowly as new ones take shape.
Arioch is probably the most interesting as the catalyst for the
evil to roam the world while bringing to him the his wife in a new
body.  But there is a flaw and that will surely have impact in the
next volume.

The prologue threw me off as it starts with Laurel's funeral.
Clearly this takes place after the events in the rest of the
book, it is just not stated anywhere. The art throughout is as
good as it gets. This is a mature book and there is some female
nudity but it is done in context and not gratuitously. Both
artists have a strong grasp of form, and composition. All around
it is a solid work that will impress anyone with an eye for
well-written horror.

While I did not note this as a "Mature" comic you should know
that this is not a comic book for kiddies. In fact many adults
might find it offensive as it takes a serious subject and makes
over the top jokes about it. The main story is called
"Unsegregated America" and it features the main characters Rager
Rabbit and Marky Mouse. These are cartoon types so the mouse is as
big as the rabbit. They are both rather violent characters. In
this story they are in search of a "primitive savage beast", the
Monkous Jigaboo. While this appears to be a monkey it is clear
from the context the intent is to portray a black. The name, an
anatomy chart referring to kinky hair, big lips, white palms all
make this a satire on racial prejudice. But is it satire?  They
hunt down this "monkey" using watermelon as bait. Once they catch
him they lynch him, cut off his hands for ashtrays and then bury
the body. They even get discovered by a cop but when they explain
they was just buhryin' a nigga he lets them off. This is really
not funny stuff, just sophomoric humor that includes church
burning as well.

I guess those who any humor is ok won't mind all this. In fact I
am sure there is a crowd that will find it hilarious - but they
would not be a majority of common people. The second story
involves a talent contest and the rabbit and mouse are just as
violent to most of the contestants. Until this duck show up with
a unique talent. He proceeds to crap on the floor and it is in
the shape of Marky Mouse! There is more but you get the idea.

The art is actually decent. The characters are consistent and
unique and the real people look like people. The pacing is good
too.

So the real thing is the subject matter. If you like outrageous
you'll love this. If you are easily offended, pass it up.
