Writer/Ad Coordinator Vince Brusio is the designated editorial writer for Previews' "The Splash Page" which is our source material Stewbum of the Starscape! Horror comics were especially big in the 1950s, but sci-fi titles started to carve a bigger niche when EC Comics created later amalgams like Weird Science-Fantasy, and Incredible Science Fiction. These series boasted names like Reed Crandall, Al Feldstein, Frank Frazetta, Angelo Torres, Al Wiiliamson, and Wally Wood. And fans took notice of the talent. They couldn't help but pay attention. Expect to see such reactions from readers when Image Comics unveils a new book from the creator of Sea of Red. Rick Remender's Fear Agent #1 is definitely a tip of the hat to the classics that came before it. Artists Tony Moore (Walking Dead) and Sean Parson also have a big stake in this title, as both artists recognize EC's high water mark for sci-fi storytelling. They know good sci-fi should also involve elements of war and horror comics for extra long flavor, gum decay, and curvature of the spinal cord. After all, the human condition is just as important as the monster who wants to eat it. And what's funnier than monsters eating people? Lessons have been learned, tested, and applied in Fear Agent #1 - but not in the way you would expect. Yes, it's time for a new direction in storytelling. But this book is not recycled space opera. Fear Agent is shards of twisted metal adrift in the black vacuum, ready to tear open your spacesuit, and cripple the NASA escape pods. All on board the scuttled space station can watch in horror as Rick Remender punches holes in our air tanks! The premise of the new book is that humans no longer have the luxury of depending on The Fear Agents. The protectors that successfully drove away three merciless alien forces have disbanded, and left humanity to its own devices. Good luck with interstellar predators! So the question is what happens to Earth when you take away the safety net? It appears that we're left only with generic bug spray in the form of Heath Huston. Although he is a former Fear Agent, his penchant for alcohol does not inspire a lot of confidence for those who want planetary life insurance. Betting on the abilities of Heath is like betting on a janitor with a high score in Space Invaders: neither person looks qualified for eliminating extraterrestrials. Imagine the carnage, then, when this sole Fear Agent has to face the threat of jellyfish brains, ape-men, and fascist robots. One must hope that the guy who bounces around the stars drunk off his nut can pull it together quick enough so that we don't wake up in the morning with chestburster heartburns. Look for Fear Agent #1 from Image Comics in the Premiere section of Previews! Taking It To The Street! Mention the words "Street Fighter" to your comrades, and they'll conjure up references to the 1994 movie with Jean-Claude Van Damme, or the classic video arcade game that's ready to celebrate its 15th anniversary. This is your cue to let them know that the legend has grown. You could see this for yourself if you went to last year's San Diego Comic-Con International, when Capcom and Udon Entertainment shared a booth to show off their new Street Fighter goodies. So when you catch a glimpse of Street Fighter II #0 in this month's catalog, know upfront that this isn't a one-shot deal. The book is offered at a special introductory price because it's an introductory jumping-on point for new readers, and it sets the stage for the full relaunch of Street Fighter II #1 next month. Ryu will soon face fighters from different disciplines around the world. The new Street Fighter mythos will be dark and vengeful. Ryu's driving force to vanquish opponents is fueled by his anger over Gouken's tragic death. Retribution is in order, and Ryu refuses to compromise. Characters also unfamiliar with the idea of compromise include Ryu's enemy, Akuma. The fierce villain is a key player in the Street Fighter mythos, and helps to make Ryu's quest difficult, if not impossible. So fans who cheer for the bad guy will flip when they see that the Street Fighter: Akuma 8-Inch Bust continues Udon's line of high-end collectibles. Standing 8" tall, each bust is individually hand-cast and painted, and is limited to 2,500 pieces. Look for both Street Fighter II #0 and Street Fighter: Akuma 8- Inch Bust from Udon Entertainment in the Comics section of Previews! It's A Deadly Day in the Neighborhood... Everyone's favorite wall-crawler is coming at you with another amazing monthly title from Marvel Comics. Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #1 is written by comic writer extraordinaire Peter David. The new title brings fans into the first part of a 12-part cross-over arc called "The Other," which spans titles Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, Amazing Spider-Man, and Marvel Knights Spider-Man. Accompanying David on this new Spider-Man book is fan-favorite penciler, Mike Weiringo. The artist has recently been applauded and given accolades for his work on Fantastic Four with former Kingdom Come writer, Mark Waid. You can bet that Weiringo's style will bring radiance to the pages of Friendly Neighborhood Spider- Man, as well as provide incredible covers to the series that will soon make people stop and think when they look over the comic racks. Haunted by unsettling dreams and a disturbing sense of dread, Peter Parker is convinced that people are out to get him - and it's making him crazy. The paranoia leaves a bad taste in his mouth. Cold sweat pushes out of his hot neck, his ears burn, his chest feels heavy ... it's not a good time to be Peter Parker. But aside from this inner turmoil, "The Other, Part 1" introduces readers to a new and dangerous addition to Spidey's rogue's gallery that goes by the name of "Tracer." In addition to contending with Tracer, Spidey must also deal with chilling news that will change his personal life in a most unpleasant manner. The underlying theme of this story is that even the most invincible hero can fall because of his fragile humanity. Teaming with fellow Spidey writers J. Michael Straczynski and Reggie Hudin, David is helping to weave an intricate web of plots aimed at breaking the will of Spider-Man. The seeds were planted way back in Straczynski's first story arc on Amazing Spider-Man. And now the seeds are sprouting! Be sure to check out the first part of this story arc in the Marvel Previews supplement!
