DC scored with Identity Crisis and the Utility Belt. The highlight of the evening, however was the winning entry in the Wizard Fan Film contest, a comedy called "Ultimate Eye for the Vertigo Guy," in which actors portraying Chuck Austen, Mark Millar and Brian Bendis went to John Constantine's house and gave him a makeover to make him more palatable. No one was laughing harder than Ed Brubaker or The Beat. You can see the whole film here, and stay through to the end for the Millar/Bendis makeover of Yorick Brown. Other wise, in yet another symbol of comics becoming just part of the mix at their own conventions, it was a bit odd to see the awards for Letterer, Colorist and Editor getting an "earlier in the evening" run down, while Michael Turner, for instance, showed up to present the award for Favorite Action Figure Line. Supergirl #1 Second Printing features a story written by Jeph Loeb and illustrated by Ian Churchill and Norm Rapmund. The new printing features a pencil version of the cover by Michael Turner. "I couldn't be happier for the team, but mostly for Supergirl herself," Loeb said. "I've said before that a good idea is a good idea -- and Supergirl is a great idea. Our hope is that readers and retailers will take the time to get to know her, just like the heroes and villains in the DCU are doing in the story." Supergirl #1 Second Printing is available for order now and is scheduled to arrive in stores on Sept. 7 with a cover price of $2.99 MECCA COMICS BECOMES CENTURY COMMICS Mecca Comics, founded in 2004, has announced it will become Century Comics with all books solicited after Sept. 1, 2005. John May, publisher, said that the name change is also a new direction for the company. "The name Mecca was designed to convey the essence of our first line of comics based on Brother Destiny and other costumed superheroes that graced our first publications," May said. Since then, May said, "The company focus has changed form the standard, 32 page superhero comic to an eclectic series of graphic novels featuring a combination of new material as well as some classic material represented by some of the industry1s true statesmen." Century Comics is publishing an all-new three part, fully- illustrated autobiography by veteran Dick Ayers. Also new is Rich Buckler1s How To Be A Dynamic Comic Book Artist. "We're also very pleased to be working with Jack Katz, the creator of The First Kingdom.2 May said. Century is producing a series of four 200-page graphic novels that will reprint the First Kingdom storyline in its entirety. It was also announced that Charlie Novinskie has been named as president of Century Comics. Novinskie served as sales and promotions manager for Topps Comics in the 1990s and currently serves as a board member for A Commitment To Our Roots (ACTOR), a non-profit organization that helps comic creators during their time of need. "Being involved with Century Comics is a great opportunity for me," Novinskie said. "My life in comics seems to revolve around golden and silver age creators, which is fine with me since I grew up with those classic comics in the sixties. "I worked with the Kirbyverse books while at Topps Comics and worked with some of the greats<Kirby, Ayers, Ditko<it was like comic heaven. Now I have the opportunity to work with Ayers and Buckler and Katz, well, it's like a dream come true. We will continue to grow slowly so that we can ensure being around years from now, still publishing books that everyone can enjoy." +++++ From Newsarama at http://www.Newsarama.com/ IMAGE COMICS HC RESOLICITED FOR NOVEMBER "IT'S FINALLY DONE!" BERKELEY, CA -- 8 August, 2005 -- Following a long delay, Image Comics has announced the IMAGE COMICS HC will finally ship this November. All previous orders are being canceled and the book is being made available for new orders in the September issue of Diamond's PREVIEWS. "It's DONE. Really!" said Image Comics Publisher, Erik Larsen. "The book was supposed to come out in early 2002, and believe me - we've been deluged with e-mails, phone calls and letters asking where it is ever since. When I came on board as publisher, one of my highest priorities was to get this thing finished and on shelves. It's taken a little longer than I'd have liked, but the wait is over at last. The book has been completed. We have every page on hand at this point." Originally solicited for a March 2002 release, the IMAGE COMICS HC features four all-new stories by the four remaining Image founders: The never-before-told origin of Erik Larsen's Savage Dragon, Todd McFarlane's first comics story since SPAWN #50 - published nearly 10 years ago, a chilling conclusion to the first act in Marc Silvestri's Cyberforce saga that clears the decks for a 2006 series re-launch, and an important chapter in the life of the all-new, all-different ShadowHawk that serves as an entry point to Jim Valentino's current ongoing series. Famously, the book didn't make its original date. "IMAGE COMICS was intended to be a celebration of our first decade as a comic book company," Larsen noted. "And it's a darned shame that it didn't come out when it was supposed to. We blew it. Parts were finished on time, to be sure, but not the entire package. It kept getting delayed and delayed and I'm sure a lot of people thought it just plain wasn't going to come out--ever. "But now we have the completed pages in our hands. And it's awesome to behold. Naturally, we wanted to get it into readers' hands as soon as possible but given that it's been three years and change since the book was originally offered, we've decided to do the responsible thing and re-solicit it. We're excited about this book - because it really IS darned cool - and we want to share that excitement with everyone else but we don't want to make a bad situation worse by shipping the book as soon as we could have and sticking retailers with orders they placed over three years ago." The IMAGE COMICS HC, available as a standard hardcover for $24.99 and a special signed & numbered slipcase edition for $75.00, is available for order in the September issue of PREVIEWS and is due to reach stores in November. Image Comics is a comics and graphic novels publisher formed in 1992 by a collective of best-selling artists. Since that time, Image has gone on to become one of the largest comics publishers in the United States. There are currently four partners in Image Comics (Erik Larsen, Todd McFarlane, Marc Silvestri and Jim Valentino), and Image is currently divided into four major houses (Todd McFarlane Productions, Top Cow Productions, Shadowline and Image Central). Image comics and graphic novels cover nearly every genre, sub-genre and style imaginable, offering science fiction, romance, horror, crime fiction, historical fiction, humor and more by the finest artists and writers working in the medium today. Image Comics - Putting the NEW back in to New Comic Book Day!(tm) +++++ From ComiX-Fan at http://www.comixfan.com/xfan WIZARDWORLD CHICAGO 2005 DAY 1 REPORT Once again, it is time for the comic world to invade the "Windy City" of Chicago. The yearly convention goes off with a bang with great news from both Marvel and DC. For a host of preview art from Marvel's panels, click here. WildStorm Panel WildStorm will be releasing a new line of fantasy sword and sorcery books called 'Storm & Sorcery'. The publisher will also be releasing a new Wildcats book written by Grant Morrison with art by Jim Lee. A new Gen13 series is in the works with Gail Simone writing, art by Talent Caldwell, and covers by Jim Lee and J. Scott Campbell. The Danger Girls creative team of Campbell and Andy Hartnell will return to comics for a 5 issue mini-series titled Wildsiderz. A new Team Zero mini-series will be coming out by Chuck Dixon with art by Doug Mahnke and Sandra Hope. Set in World War II, Team Zero features the original agent codenamed Deathblow, who's been put in charge of a seven-man team on a mission into the heart of Germany. Marvel Knights Panel The X-Statix creative team of Peter Milligan, Mike Allred and Nick Dragotta are set to reunite on an X-Statix: Dead Girl Special mini-series. Jeph Loeb was announced as having been signed exclusive to Marvel as of September 1. He will still finish his stint on DC's Supergirl. Loeb's first project for Marvel will be with fan favorite artist Joe Madureira. No details on what book were given out yet. The new creative team on Daredevil was announced as writer Ed Brubaker and artist Michael Lark. Bendis passed the torch to Brubaker and Lark... literally. Quesada gave Bendis a billy-club used in the Daredevil, and Bendis used it to ceremoniously passed on the mantle of Daredevil writer to Brubaker. Daniel Way, Steve Dillon and Mike Deodato are teaming up for a 5-issue Punisher vs. Bullseye mini-series beginning in November. NextWave is the oft-discussed Warren Ellis team book, with the characters previously announced including Boom Boom and Machine Man. Black Panther #10 features a team-up of T'Challa with almost every recognizable non-caucasian character in the Marvel U including the Falcon, Luke Cage, Blade, Brother Voodoo and Shang-Chi. Editor Axel Alonso also said that Reginald Hudlin would be honoring his commitment to both Black Panther and MK Spider-Man despite being announced as new president of BET. Another series of What If? one-shots will be released later this year. Kevin Smith dropped by the Marvel Knights panel and as previously announced, Spider-Man/Black Cat: The Evil That Men Do is all scripted up and ready for art. Issues #1-3 will be re-released in a Must Haves edition in November followed by issue #4 in December. #5 might also ship in time for Christmas. While explaining the lateness, one fan in the room did heckle him about Daredevil: Target. Smith jokingly shouted back, "I don't even get to celebrate for five ****ing minutes!" Bendis Panel Bendis will be writing a Spider-Woman: Origin mini-series featuring art by the Luna Brothers. After that mini, Bendis will launch an ongoing Spider-Woman series with artist Alex Maleev. Bendis and artist Mark Bagley plan to break the famous Stan Lee/Jack Kirby record of consecutive issues of the same creative team without a fill-in of 103 issues by at least 20 on Ultimate Spider-Man. Next few arcs will see Ultimatized versions of Silver Sable, Deadpool and the Reavers. The preview of the new Ultimate Spider-Man game was very interesting. The games art feels like Bagley. The plot will be pulled from the series. The training mission will be the fight scene from #38. New Avengers artists include a 2-issue stint by Frank Cho and the return of Steve McNiven for an arc. The "permanent" artists won't be in place until issue #22, and while they have a name, it's too early to announce. The Pulse will continue its bimonthly schedule, but may move to monthly next year. Work on the Jessica Jones/Alias show, currently titled Alter Ego due to the ABC series Alias, is progressing at Fox. Bendis has submitted the first script, which closely follows the first arc of his Alias series. WIZARD WORLD CHICAGO 2005 DAY 2 REPORT Day 2 of Chicago was a big, huge day for Marvel. More exclusive contracts were being announced throug the day. As well as a sneak peek at the first Ultimate Avengers DVD. House of M: Before and After Panel Artist Michael Turner has been signed up for an unnamed six-issue project for Marvel. Marvel Universe: Decimation will show the after-effects of HoM on the MU in several books, including X-Men: Deadly Genesis by Ed Brubaker and Trevor Hairsine which will look back at the history of the X-Men while telling a story set in the current timeline. Another Decimation book is the House of M: The Day After one-shot by Chris Claremont and Randy Green which will show the world's reaction to the House of M and how it affects mutants. Decimation will also include the Generation M limited series by writer Paul Jenkins and artist Ramon Bachs featuring covers by Stuart Immonen will look at the post- HoM world through different characters perspectives. X-Factor returns with writer Peter David and artist Ryan Sook. Business is good for Jamie Madrox's agency in the time after the House of M. Madrox, Guido and Wolfsbane are joined by Siryn, Monet (M), and Rictor. Exiles will visit HoM, and Proteus will be an ongoing villain after they leave that world. They will also visit the 2099 and New Universe worlds, amongst others. Wolverine will see Logan begin searching for answers after the effects of HoM, starting with issue #36 by the new creative team of writer Daniel Way and artists Mark Texeira and Javier Saltares. In November, Uncanny X-Men #466 will start an arc dealing with HoM entitled "End of Greys", pertaining to Jean Grey and her relatives. New Avengers #16-21 will feature a brand new, cosmic-level villain comparable to Korvac. Astonishing X-Men's HoM changes will take place between the two major arcs, but it sounds like the changes are minor. New X-Men's cast and plot changes post-HoM, more than any other book. When asked if the HoM will clear up the problems concerning Xorn and Magneto, writer Brian Michael Bendis said HoM #7 will have some answers. Joe Madureira's new Marvel project will be announced in the Wizard magazine due out in three weeks. Ultimate Avengers DVD Panel The panel was hosted by Marvel Studios' Craig Kyle and Ken Katsumoto from Lions Gate. The audience was shown a 1 minute test piece of animations from Lions Gate's upcoming animated Ultimate Avengers DVD. Imagine some of the coolest panels of the book now animated. Giant-Man holding the Hulk against the building, Iron Man crashing through the train station, etc. These scenes may not be in the movie, but the first DVD will be close to the first arc, and the second release will follow the second arc. The first DVD comes out in February, with other releases following quarterly. After Ultimate Avengers 1 and 2, they will do a origin movie for the MU Iron Man with animation different than the Ultimate Avengers. Following that, another origin movie featuring an as-yet-unnamed character. The movie will be PG or PG 13, not your Saturday morning cartoon stuff here. Some of the elements and politics (i.e. Hulk's cannibalizing and Giant-Man's domestic abuse) will be toned down. Ultimates artist Bryan Hitch was consulted for the art, and he did the designs for a new character not seen in the original books. No stunt casting. There's no Samuel L. Jackson voicing Fury. They looked for actors who would sound like the characters, not those who might sell more DVD's. Full orchestral soundtrack. The DVD extras are currently being discussed. There will be some kind of a broadcast release, some months after the DVD, but they couldn't yet announce with who just yet. Ultimate Universe: The Gold Standard Panel Ultimate Spider-Man's arc following "Warriors" will see the first appearance of Ultimate Silver Sable and Ultimate Omega Red. Bendis said, "I love crappy 90's characters." Ultimate Fantastic Four will introduce Ultimate Namor in the arc after "Crossover". Ultimate Extinction will reveal Ultimate Galactus, as well as a good possibility of Ultimate Silver Surfer. The final chapters of Ultimate Secret will be out in November and December. Ultimate Invasion will follow Ultimate Extinction. There is an Ultimate Captain America series planned, but far, far in the future. Late 2006 at the earliest. The Ultimate universe is being planned 2-3 years in the future. Ultimate X-Men #61 will see Ultimate Mystique. The conspiracy that underlies the Ultimate universe has been hinted at throughout Ultimates. Ultimates will continue after Hitch and Millar leave the title, retaining it's 12 issue "seasonal" approach. Leinil Francis Yu is now exclusive to Marvel, and his big project will be an Ultimate Hulk vs Wolverine limited series. +++++ From the DC Comics Online Newsletter at http://www.dccomics.com DC COMICS LOWERS PRICES ON FIRST TWO SHOWCASE COLLECTIONS!
