------------------------ Yahoo! Release Date: November 2005. Email: allison@monkeybrainbooks.com Attn: Allison Baker Price: $14.95 Comments: My son Jason was staying with me for one month, the month of July and he called me at work and said I had a package in the mail. I told him to go ahead and open it up and he told me it was Myths for the Modern Age. I dropped the telephone, totally in shock, I have already ordered this book and I should have been receiving it in the month of November, but instead I have an advanced copy to overview! I jumped in my maroon 2003 Dodge Stratus Coupe, that I affectionately call the Jazma Mobile and high tailed it out of my office, got on the freeway, where there was some rubber necking. On top of the roof of my car are hover blades, they popped up, I hovered over the traffic and then the jet wings popped out and ignited exhaust flames, as I flew to my home to retrieve my book! Sound amazing? Well, every character mentioned in this book is amazing! The story concept is mind alternating and originated (most of it) from Philip Jose Farmer in the book Doc Savage: His Apocalyptic Life and Tarzan Alive! When I was a kid, I owned both of these books and I remember telling my dad that Doc Savage, James Bond, Mr. Moto and Tarzan are all related. I even showed him the family tree in one of the books. He scoffed at the mere suggestion that these great literature characters could be related. Here's how it goes. "Wold Newton is a village in the East Riding of Yorkshire County, England. It is chiefly famous for a meteorite which struck near it in 1795, the exact location of which is marked by a monument which tourists, or anybody else, may see now. At the moment it struck, two large coaches with fourteen passengers and four coachmen were within a few yards of it. All were exposed to the ionization of the accompanying meteorites. The descendents of all those in or on the coaches include an extraordinary number of great crime fighters, scientists, and explorers. So many, in fact that the only reasonable explanation is that the meteorite caused a beneficial mutation of the genes exposed." Members of the Wold Newton family are: Solomon Kane, Captain Blood, The Scarlet Pimpernel, Harry Flashman, C. Auguste Dupin, Sherlock Homles, Professor Moriarty (aka Captain Nemo), Philieas Fogg, The Time Traveler, Allan Quatermain, Tarzan and his son Korak, Doctor Fu Man Chu, Sir Denis Nayland Smith, G-8, The Shadow, Sam Spade, Doc Savage, The Spider, Nero Wolfe, Mr. Moto, The Avenger, Philip Marlowe, James Bond, Lew Archer, Travis McGee and many, many more! You will learn from this book that Philip Jose Farmer was not the first to come up with the Wold Newton hypothesis that Sherlock Holmes and Nero Wolfe are father and son, the reader is referred to William S. Baring-Gould's writings on this matter. You will learn of the Crossover Chronology, which is a timeline of crossover stories that bring two or more literary characters, situations, universes, or in some rare cases, actual historical personages that have been linked together. A good example is The Rainbow Affair, which brings together: Sherlock Holmes, Fu Manchu, Nayland Smith, James Bond with the Men from U.N.C.L.E., The Avengers, The Saint, Inspector West, Department Z and Miss Marple (in which were added to the Wold Newton Universe due to this crossover). Mr. Farmer suggested that Lois Lane, Clark Kent's objet d'amour, as a possible sister to the Shadow's Margo Lane. Win Scott Eckert explains the limitations of opening the floodgates with possible comic book crossovers, which is very detailed in this book. He explains that he will accept the concept if a superhero appears with a Wold Newton Universe character. Examples: Batman appears through Sherlock Holmes/Tarzan crossovers. Captain America is in, through the appearance in a Green Hornet story. Elongated Man is in by meeting with Sherlock Holmes. Plastic Man through his connection with The Spirit. Spider-Man comes into the fold, by sharing adventures with King Kull, Red Sonja and Doc Savage. Let me tell you about Win Scott Eckert. I had the privilege of interviewing Win, this man has an incredible life and I have kept in touch with him on various crossovers. He holds a B.A. in Anthropology and a Juris Doctorate. In 1997, he posted the first site on the Internet devoted to expanding Philip Jose Farmer's concept of the Wold Newton Family (in which I am a great fan and it is readily accessible for me, because I have it on my 'favorites', I have used Win's website for my research when I write up overviews). He served as a expert consultant on crossovers involving characters from pulp fiction and Victorian literature for a lawsuit concerning a major motion picture. Win can be contacted via email at: woldnewton@qwest.net. If you haven't checked out his website, it's located at: www.pjfarmer.com/woldnewton/pulp.htm Myths for the Modern Age expands the boundaries of the reader's imagination. It's enlightment in the truest form. This is a must-read and a definite reference book for all literature icon readers, Myths for the Modern Age brilliance shines through with amazing painstaking research, I can't get enough of it! Win, you're my hero, thank you for delivering Myths for the Modern Age! Totally insightful! Name: Origins of the Cadre #1 Publisher: Nifty Comics Created by: Mat Nastos Email: cadre@niftycomics.com Comments: This story is about Lamprey aka Chris Squires, horror novelist. He is gifted with the ability to steal energy from living creatures. The origin story is sort of on the creepy side, here is this little kid that can freak grown people out, he has this strange aura about him. Throughout life he is always struggling to be accepted, like all teenager kids, he learns about 'girls' and he continues to struggle with the rationale side of normalcy to being gifted with something other people might consider as 'spooky'. I don't want to give too much away, but you will meet Arthur Douglas who met an entity from the otherside, this entity came upon him as a glowing sphere and then became more defined and appears as a human presence. I found this quite interesting, because my mother claims that when she was a young girl, she stayed in a home in Mexico with her brother Joe and her father. One night Joe found himself in his sister (my mother's bed) and my mom found herself in Joe's bed. The next night, she watches a small ball of light dancing around at the foot of her bed and as she continued to watch the light, it grew into a small boy carrying a basket of roses, the boy approached my mother and rose petals fell to the floor and disipated, my mother screamed and the entity vanished. This entry in this comic book, brought back my mother's ghost story, I got a few chills out of that one! Lamprey is dressed to the hilt and promoting his book and encounters a woman who wants him to sign her book (a book that Lamprey wrote) and when Lamprey looks up, she mysteriously vanishes. Chris Squires describes his childhood with great detail and the tragedy of Aaron. Everything looks good for Chris, he learns to utilize his powers and he sells his first novel. There are some good action scenes and there are great scenes showing Lamprey with his teammates! Origins of the Cadre #1, you will find that the artwork is over- the-top and the story packs a punch! Makes me want to join the Cadre! MOE Sidenote: As I entered the A1 Comics Stargate, this is the realities that I encountered: The Imaginaries #3 by Image; Night Mary #1 by IDW; Metal Gear Solid #11 by IDW; Bear (Bastards) #9 by SLG (check them out at www.bearfoo.com); CSI: NY #1 by IDW; Manga Darkchylde #2 of 5 by Dark Horse Comics; Dead Eyes Open #1 by SLG; Castlevania: The Belmont Legacy #5 by IDW; Comics International #181 Feb 05. Here are a few comics that I purchased and my comments to the various editors: GI Joe America's Elite #2 by Devil's Due: After reading GI Joe America's Elite #2, I must say the beginning scene in which the Baroness confronts Storm Shadow and his co- horts reminded me of the scene in which Jodie Foster confronts Hannibal Lector in Silence of the Lambs. That was a great opening scene! The Storm Shadow costume is superb, he definitely looks intimidating. Stefano Caselli is excellent with his penciling! I love the slick format of this comic book, keep it up! The Legend of Isis #3 Not only do you have godly fantasy in The Legend of Isis #3, but you also have regular human drama, such as when Crystal shows her possessive side, in regard to her boyfriend with Jessica. The heated debate left a questionable friendship between the two, especially when she accuses Jessica of stealing her boyfriend. What can I say about the artwork...it's miraculously amazing! I hope Isis always keeps her staff of Luxor, she is a powerful entity with this weapon. The costumes on your characters are one-of-a-kind and I loved both covers to this one comic book. What comic book gives me great action, adventure that is unbelievable and living mummies kicking butt? Night Mary #1 by IDW: Wow! Just picked up Night Mary #1 and I love the Wizard of Oz - contrast of color/black and white. In this case, the dream is in color and the reality is black and white. The artwork is spectacular! The opening scene dreamscape went from innocent fairy tale dreaming with the likes of Mother Goose, The 3 little pigs discussing their fright of the big bad wolf and things went horrifically wrong as Robert is being eaten alive by the 3 little pigs, from the beauty of the dream to a scary nightmare! Mary and Jill's interaction in the dream is chaotic and frightening, this scared me more than Nightmare on Elm Street. Freddie Krueger would probably get the willies. What a strange dream connection between Mary and Jill and it could deal with Jill's possible schizophrenic persona. The bloody scene brought chills down my back, this is a GREAT comic book that is a touch of sci- fi, with some horror flav. I got a kick seeing Scott waiting for his session and what is he reading?...Fangoria no less! Great story, looking forward to more of the same! The Phantom by Moonstone Comics: I cannot believe all of the great comics coming out of Moonstone! Moonstone is keeping the legend alive with The Phantom, Belle Starr, Kolchak in his own comic book: The Nightstalker Chronicles, Khan and even Cisco Kid! I just picked up The Phantom and I must admit that Ben Raab is an excellent writer and does well with the Phantom stories and Pat Quinn works magic with his penciling. Each panel of The Phantom, you have to stop and look at, because everything is nicely detailed. I love stories of the Wild West and now Belle Starr of all people has her own comic book? Belle Starr of course was a real outlaw and now her legend will continue through Moonstone. Cisco Kid on the other hand is a fictional Wild West character and even his legend will continue. Will there be a crossover between Cisco Kid and Belle Starr? Just thinking about it, I can hear the song by War...Cisco Kid was a friend of mine.... I love conquerers from Alexander the Great to Napolean Bonaparte and now there will be a comic book about Genghis Khan, unbelievable! I will definitely check this one out! Kolchak inspired the X-Files and the stories will continue in The Nightstalker Chronicles, the staff at Moonstone made my day!! I will also check out Revisionary, Vengeance of the Mummy and Lai Wan! Moonstone has set up the paveway to excellence! Strangers in Paradise #75: Terry - if you wanted to, you could do a full story on Slash the Cat and it would actually be very entertaining. I actually got a kick out of watching Slash thinking he was a great lion in the African plains, stalking his prey, then is seen chasing some common birds. Cats are definitely funny. For a common house cat, Slash has personality! Emily was doing the CSI thing and I loved the way it was delivered and the corpse did look like roadkill. Strangers in Paradise #75 was very, very intriguing. You have a great imagination, I hear these women at my work talk about their soap operas and I told them if they want a great soap opera, then they should read Strangers in Paradise, they would be simply amazed, one lady said the next time she drives by a comic book store, she will pick one up. Zorro #3 by Speakeasy Comics: Hip hip hurray! Not only is Zorro back, but so is the great Don McGregor! Don is bonded to the hip with Zorro and if you want great Zorro stories, then Don is the man! The artwork was fabulous in Zorro #3 and there was even a feel of James Bond, as I saw Zorro in his high adventure and on skis of all things! There is a reality show called Dog the Bounty Hunter and Dog lectures the people he has to arrest and tries to show them a different perspective on life and Zorro like Dog (Dog probably learned from Zorro) does the same thing. Example: Zorro says..'the wolf does not attack for greed or sheer mendacity. The wolf hunts to survive, not to mutilate.' If I was a bad guy, I would take Zorro's words to heart! I couldn't believe the tremendous action in this comic book and escaping the avalanche was breath-taking to say the least! This is only going to get better! Of course, this is the Multiverse Observer and Explorer signing off until next time.................. _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- [13] My View David LeBlanc ComicBkNet@aol.com http://members.aol.com/comicbknet David LeBlanc is the Editor of the Comic Book Network Electronic Magazine; which won the prestigious Eagle Award for Favorite Comic Book Ezine in 2001. Comics from Dork Storm Press www.dorkstorm.com DORK TOWER #31 32 pages, full color, $2.99 by John Kovalic john@kovalic.com Have you ever been involved in an organization that smothers itself in meetings and details of parliamentary procedure that nothing gets done from week to week? That was the first thought I had reading the lead story to this issue as Igor takes over as Chairman for the annual Mud Con and holds the meeting at the local IWHOR - International Waffle House of Renown. John has a way of setting a central theme, like the organizational meeting, and then running with it while coming up with lots of funny situations. Like Igor's speech on realistic goals, commitment to personal responsibility, maturity and above all fiscal responsibility. Then he needs to ask someone else to pay for the meal as he has no cash or credit on him. The committee reports are funny too, what with the punctuality committee postponing its report, the efficiency committee has yet to meet, while the hospitality committee had to disband amidst hostility, acrimony, finger-pointing, feuding, accusations and ill-will. In the end, after disarray, boredom, fear and anxious moments, igor hits on the crux of why they go on. Like fandom itself cons are bizarre, disorganized, chaotic, and haphazard amateur things. That's the thrill! As I have said before, the thrill of DORK TOWER is seeing how many sides of fandom John can show us and in doing show us ourselves and our friends. It is not just fans though. Much of it is universal. The best comedy is the tongue in cheek look at humanity, and John does it better than anyone. Even the one page strips get me. Igor has real good intentions by mailing some games to his friend Drew, in Iraq. He figures he an his gaming buddies can relieve their tension and get their minds off stuff with a change of pace. Of course what he sends are war games. Most issues also have a game for you to try out with your friends as well as back up features. A one page Dr. Blink, Super Hero Shrink explores other doctor's names that rhyme with their profession. Lethargic Lad explore's his rogue's gallery with a look at Naked Blue Girl who begins working with LL's enemies until while pretending to be yet another Lethargic Lad she finds out how much fun it is. It is a pretty good package in color for $3. DR. BLINK: SUPERHERO SHRINK #2 32 pages, full color, $3.49 by John Kovalic and Christopher Jones In case you haven't caught up with this title yet it is about a psychiatrist whose clients are super heroes. Now, the only psychiatrists I have ever seen are those on TV or the movies. But then, that is where all the super heroes are too, so why not in the comics? Heroes have problems like anyone else and Dr. Blink has built up a practice helping them. But now a new guy has made a multi media splash (ala Dr. Phil) and even gt some of Dr. Blink's patients to switch. Dr. Blink is beside himself, even imagines Dr. Larry as an arch enemy like in the comics. It takes his daughter, dispensing his own wisdom, to bring him back to reality. That part gets the title character into the book but the real plot centers around a sidekick has been, J. Hogan - Wonder Boy #6. This character is patterned after Robin with Nocturne being the Batman figure. The kid sidekicks for this night avenger last as long as their voice doesn't crack. Once it does they are out. Hence the fact he was number six and there were others after. But Hogan could never really cope with life after the fame wore off. He eventually spent all the money he saved he slid into drugs and crime. He tried a comeback on a reality show but that failed. Clearly he is letting his past rule his present and it may escalate to serious crime if something does not change his attitude. Of course it does and that makes for an interesting and fulfilling story, with little bits of humor along the way. John and Christopher succeed in not being tied into a formula after just a couple of issues. In the past it has all been heroes with strange hang ups and the Dr. figuring ways to help them. This time the Dr. has his own problems and the hero finds a solution on his own. A surprising but welcome approach! A backup story by Alex Robinson follows a familiar theme. Brad and Ag have just watched a video when she tells him her secret, she is really Ultra Gal! He is excited, especially when she gets a call to go on a mission. He convinces her to take him along, something against the super-hero code. That nearly proves to be disastrous. This strip will be continued as it ends with Ultra Gal getting a visit from a famous heroine with a proposition. NODWICK #28 32 pages, black & white, $2.99 by Aaron Williams www.nodwick.com This story starts at the beginning when the gods walked the earth and man was dumb as dirt. In order for a civilization to rise they need to boost man's brain power. So they created the Cerebrostim-X tree, a tree of knowledge. This enabled man to get brainier and eventually uppity. So the gods left Earth, only to be eventually follow to their dimension by even smarter humans. The gods fixed that by going back and destroying the tree. Man good not get and smarter but would survive. One craftsman took the remains of the heart of the tree and fashioned a club, looks like a cricket bat actually. This is the famous artifact that Nodwick and his friends have been led to in order to defeat the super evil Baphuma'al. It is known as the "Clue by Four" but they don't know what it can do. Then by accident they discover if someone is hit in the head with it, the power of the tree goes directly to their brain. With that as a premise you just know that Yeager, the strong but rather dim mercenary will be the one to gain knowledge. It appears to work and so he tries again to come up with a plan to defeat their enemy. What we get is a very wordy explanation of all the options which come down to, he hasn't got a clue what to do. Maybe if he hits someone else it would work. It gets him thrown out of the pub. Then, again by accident, he gets hit again and finds a way to communicate with the gods. Perhaps they can help, or maybe they will be really pissed. The final fate of the Clue by Four is very clever. Not too much Nodwick this time round but this is still an entertaining book. 9 1/2 Geeks is the backup with story by Stacey Heger and art by Misty Gates. It follows a hot female gamer around town as she talks on her phone, trying to get someone to join her group. The guys that listen in as she does all make attempts to offer to play and are shot down crudely. I may be missing something with this strip but it just did not click with me. _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- [14] New Comic Book Releases List [NCRL] by Charles LePage chuck@comiclist.com http://www.comiclist.com New Comic Book Releases List for Wednesday, 8/17/2005, compiled by Charles LePage with information from Suncoast Comics.
