He is in production of his own self-published comic book called The Legendary Dark Silhouette and has copyrighted over 600 characters for his Jazma Universe.] SPOILER WARNING: THE FOLLOWING COLUMN MAY REVEAL SIGNIFICANT PORTIONS OF THE PLOTS OF SOME COMIC BOOKS, OR THE ENTIRE STORY. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. Name: Flare #28 November 2005 Publisher: Heroic Publishing Price: $2.99 Website: www.heroicpub.com Email: flaremail@heroicpub.com 3 Stories: The Origin of Lady Darkon - The Triumph of the Amazing Darkon - Cooky! She's a Lazy Dumb Mutt! Multiple Creators: Gordon Purcell, Mike Estlick, Wilson Hill, Terry Pallot, Dennis Mallonee, Tim Burgard, Howard Bender and more! Comments: The artwork is always top-notch in any Heroic comic book and Flare #28 is no exception. Some enjoyable scenes were shown, like Nyx getting spanked by Zeus. Nyx doesn't take this kindly and takes out some frustration with another goddess Eos. You will see how the Amazing Darkon gets her new costume and she will confront a very unusual character named Thugmaster who wears this dark outfit, large dark cape and floppy hat. The Champions make their appearance in this issue and the reader will have a blast figuring out what makes the Amazing Darkon click. The original Amazing Darkon was a man named Nicholas and the new Amazing Darkon is now a woman with the personality of the original Amazing Darkon. Because of a time machine displacement of events the Amazing Darkon is now a female in this reality, while the male version is somewhere in limbo. In the second story Flare is trapped in a anti-gravity bubble by the male version of Darkon. This story starts off with Nicholas (Darkon) in a Federal Detention Center and Damian Pomegranate gives Darkon some temporary powers that are ten-fold from the powers he used to have, now he can seek his revenge on Flare. His goal is to banish Flare into outerspace, but not realizing as she gets closer to the sun, her powers increase and she makes Darkon into hamburger meat. If you want some comedy relief, then Cooky! She's a Lazy Dumb Mutt fits the bill! Name: Giant #2 November 2005 Publisher: Heroic Publishing Price: $2.99 Website: www.heroicpub.com Email: flaremail@heroicpub.com 3 Stories: Giant Meets the Abominable Ogre - The Testing of Nemesis Girl - The Legend of Giant Multiple Creators: Chris Marrinan, John Heebink, J. Adams Walters, Tom Luth, Wilson Hill and more! Comments: What I would love to see with Heroic Publishing is a intercompany crossover with their characters and perhaps with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I would love to see how their characters would react with characters from another company. Maybe someday. One thing is that the Heroic Universe is part of the Multiverse, because their characters have tie ins with Olympus, the mythical dwelling place of the gods. There is a Hercules in the Heroic Universe, as there is a Hercules in the Marvel Universe, DC Universe and the Image Universe (see Savage Dragon alongside Herkules). There can only be one Hercules and he has crossed over many universes within the Multiverse in various personas. In the beginning of Giant #2, Icestar is ready to face down Ogre, so the action is ready to begin. Heroic comics never waste anytime. Then meet the sexy teacher named Miss Popkin who seems to make a suggestive remark to her student Jensen. In real life there are many female teachers that have had affairs with their students, let's not have it happen here. Ogre makes his grand appearance at the school and raises havoc and mayhem and Giant steps in to calm the situation. What I like about Ogre is that his vocabulary is limited and he sounds like the Hulk. While there is a battle royale going on, it is discovered that poor Miss Popkin had a brushing with Ogre and her clothes are ripped to shreds, she has to put on a police uniform shirt to cover certain areas of her exposed body. Don't think Miss Popkin is all innocent, because she has plans to set Giant up and she has made her moves on him. She has placed those womanly charms on the big guy! The story continues. In the second story Teresa Feran v. Joyce Jensen. Joyce has Teresa's mother's armor on and when she faces down Teresa and later a witchgirl named Andrea, she realizes she needs some more training. Joyce will not give up being Nemesis Girl! In the third story, get a nice glimpse of Olympus and how these heroes tie in to the mountain of the gods! Name: Captain America #9 Publisher: Marvel Comics Price: $2.99 Creative Force: Brubaker, Lark, D'Armata Email: MHeroes@marvel.com Comments: Just like a great action movie, I get to see Nick Fury, Sharon, Captain America and the rest of the SHIELD agents over the Altai Mountains in Mongolia. Sharon is really giving me the creeps, she won't stop giving Steve Rogers hell. Then using her womanly methods tricks Steve into confessing that he was the one that got her bumped off the team for the Kronos Op. Sharon's anger is relentless and I was surprised that Cap and Sharon would work out so good together, even with their frustrations as they are. Cap is already peeved and he is as stubborn as all heck, since he will not bow down and apologize to Lukin. I am getting a bit nervous, because as long as Alek holds onto that cosmic cube, he will not only lose his sanity, he will become very dangerous. What a shocking revelation for Synthia Schmidt, as she learns that she is the daughter of the notorious Red Skull. To make matters worse, she is a hostage! Can't get any more intriguing than that! Name: Ultimate Spider-Man #81 Publisher: Marvel Comics Price: $2.99 Email: ultimateoffice@marvel.com Comments: It was great seeing Shang-Chi and Iron Fist together again in Ultimate Spider-Man #81! As they rehash things out in their conversation together, there is trouble in the horizon. As Shang-Chi discusses the 3 youth gangs in Chinatown that do nothing but kill, steal and rape and how the common folk need his protection, then they are surrounded by a mob of bad guys! I loved the way Shang-Chi caught that bullet with his hand, that was meant to snuff him out. Talk about action, Shang-Chi and Iron Fist are surrounded by baddies. The climax of fun for this story is when Black Cat comes to the rescue of Spider-Man! _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- COMICS OBSCURA Mike Curtis shandafa@cyberback.com [COMICS OBSCURA are facts Mike Curtis has dug out during his 30 years of collecting Superman and writing about comics. He is of course the man behind SHANDA FANTASY ARTS the website for which is at www.shandafantasyarts.net ] NOT THE JUSTICE LEAGUE 1960's STYLE They were the early 1960's most famous team of crime fighters, adored by millions of kids and forgotten today. Not the JLA , but the animated FUNNY COMPANY. In 1963, Mattel produced this animated series of shorts and syndicated them nationwide to local TV kid shows. The local hosts snapped them up, since Mattel also ran PAYING ads on the kid shows if the FUNNY COMPANY cartoons were shown. This kid's gang cartoon featured such members as JASPER NATIONAL PARK, boy genius; SHRINKING VIOLETTE, a little girl who could reduce her size; POLLY PLUM, MERRY TWITTER, and their leader, BUZZER BELL. They fought crime in their neighborhood, with such villains as the well remembered BELLY LAGOONA, and DR. VON OPP. Each 6-minute cartoon had a frequently live 2 minute section in the middle demonstrating some craft such as how to make a home printing press. The longest lasting legacy of this forgotten toon was the ending, showing a circle with eyes and a smile- the predecessor of the later "happy face." Oddly enough, Mattel produced few toys of the series. _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- [10] My View David LeBlanc ComicBkNet@aol.com http://members.aol.com/comicbknet David LeBlanc is the Editor of the Comic Book Network Electronic Magazine; which won the prestigious Eagle Award for Favorite Comic Book Ezine in 2001. HERO CORPS: THE ROOKIE 112 pages, black & white, 5-1/2" X 8", $7.95 Baby Shark Productions babysharkpress@aol.com Jason Becker - Writer/Creator Greg Moutafis - Art/Lettering Jon Rea - Cover Design This is a fun one! It is a self-contained graphic novel set in a world where one in ten people are born with some kind of power. In such a world with so many supers they need a special police force. Thus began the Hero Corps. They handle the supers that have gone the way of the dark side. Now there are only so many super powers and most have been used so it is no surprise that the title character reminds you of Thor. But in his case the hammer is an alien artifact that gives the first person that picks it up powers of flight, strength and so on. As time goes on it is emotion that fuels how powerful the weapon is in battle and over time, like a battery, it loses some of its effectiveness. When that user dies whoever picks it up gains the power and the cycle begins again. Robert Santiago is the current wielder, AKA Norse. The story, aside from the action scenes, revolves around how he got the hammer and who is destined to take his place. The story is character driven. We learn that Robert got the hammer from his former enemy and lover when she died. Another member of Hero Corp is Michelle, who just found out that Robert is her biological father and she wants nothing to do with him. To complicate things her new boyfriend, Maxwell Keith, is in training to take Robert's place when he dies in the line of duty. He is not a powered person and was to be come the Captain America equivalent but now this is his destiny. Though Robert is the rookie at the start, clearly Maxwell is the heart of tale as it reaches its climax. The writing is brilliant with a good mix of action, character development and a good sense of humor. The dialogue is not cliched or sophomoric. It flows well from scene to scene and there is a variety of situations and emotions covered, all equally well. The art is up to Moutafis' usual standard. You might be wary to try out a new series, and this promises to have more stories that need to be told. If you like super heroes done well, you'll like this one! Walking Man Comics 123 Elm Street Hatfield, MA 01038 created by Matt Levin walkingmancomics@comcast.net MUSICOMICS and WALKING MAN COMICS PRESENTS are mini-comics created mostly from rubber-stamped images and are available for $1 each or 4/$3. A 12-page sampler is available by sending a 37-cent stamp to the above address. MUSICOMICS #30 Words - Music - Pictures This issue of MUSICOMICS, which sets song lyrics to pictures, is a dissertation about the end and endings. At first you might think it means death with images of a drowning man and a giant insect throwing a house. (yikes!) But it is more about realizations that all things end, speeches, seasons, the daylight and so on. Oh, and all is well that ends well. Once again a simple lyric is beautifully expanded on with just a few images well arranged. I'd pay a dollar for that! WALKING MAN COMICS PRESENTS SPECIAL #59 "Mocking Cats . . . Anew" WIth 17 new stamps to show off Matt has created a world surrounding cats, in particular our narrator, Peckinpaw and his lady cat, Fish Heads Sal. Peckinpaw lets us know that he is important and leads us through a typical day around the house where he and his fellow cats eat and hunt and explore. There are birds to catch and fish to eat from the boatman. A third cat, Luckless, lives up to his name, adding comic relief. A fun romp typical of the series. _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- COMICS OBSCURA Mike Curtis shandafa@cyberback.com [COMICS OBSCURA are facts Mike Curtis has dug out during his 30 years of collecting Superman and writing about comics. Marvel embarked on a personal appearance program featuring their most famous characters in the 1970's. Frakes was the main portrayer of CAPTAIN AMERICA, and played the part with Amy Carter at the White House to kick off an Energy saving campaign. His distinctive chin and smile are easily identifiable in photos from the event. _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- [11] TOP 100 COMICS FOR AUG 2004 Diamond Comics Diamond's top 300 list each month reports totals for the products that have shipped and billed for the month before. He is of course the man behind SHANDA FANTASY ARTS the website for which is at www.shandafantasyarts.net ] HERE I COME---I'M NOT GOING ANYWHERE! In the 1950's a MIGHTY MOUSE balloon was produced for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade, and made just one appearance---Mighty's head and ears were so wide, he became stuck between buildings. _________________________________________________________________ Thanks for subscribing to the Comic Book Network Electronic Magazine (CBEM) --------------------------->Disclaimer<--------------------------- This is an ANNOUNCE only mailing list, only the Editor can send messages to the list.
