BLADE TELEVISION UPDATE

The Blade television series for Spike TV is on course,
executive producer David Goyer told The Continuum.

"We're moving forward, about to attach a director and start
pre-production," Goyer told The Continuum.

Goyer wrote all three Blade films and directed Blade: Trinity.
He and Geoff Johns are writing the television pilot.

Goyer, pictured above with Jessica Biel on the set of Blade:
Trinity, also wrote Batman Begins with director Christopher Nolan
and has been attached to write and direct a Flash film for Warner
Bros.

SECOND PRINTING FOR JUSTICE #1

After selling out its initial print run at DC Comics, Justice
#1 is going back to press for a new printing, scheduled to arrive
in stores in Oct. 19.

Justice #1 Second Printing reprints the first issue, written by
Alex Ross and Jim Krueger, with art by Doug Braithwaite and Ross.
The cover of the second printing features art by Braithwaite and
Ross never before published by DC Comics.

"Thank God (or in this case, DC) for this second printing,"
Krueger said. "It would be a sad thing if there was anyone who
couldn't be here from the beginning for the be-all, end-all
battle between the JLA and the ultimate conspiracy of evil."

"As a thank you to the retailers who ordered Justice #1 and the
Justice: Superman Action Figure Exclusive, we're sending the same
number of action figures to every retailer who qualified and
ordered them the first time around at no charge," said Bob Wayne,
DC's VP -- Sales. "So if you bought two Justice: Superman
Action Figure Exclusive before, you'll receive two more for
free."

WIZARD WORLD BOSTON: CRISIS COUNSELING WITH DAN DIDIO

DC Comics' Dan DiDio held his final Crisis Counseling panel
before the first issue of Infinite Crisis Friday at Wizard World
Boston. Joined by Bob Wayne and Greg Rucka, DiDio joked, "This is
my last chance to be vague, to lie and to beat around the bush."

Following are highlights from the panel:

  * DiDio said the four pre-Crisis mini-series were "a big risk
for us" that helped highlight some of the quirkier, second-tier
characters. There will be individual tie-ins for each of the
mini-series that DiDio said "will fill in some of the gaps."

  * Asked about anthologies, DiDio said they are a tough sale
right now. "People seem to like extended stories," he said.

  * Rucka on continuity: "There seems to be a lot of fear we're
going to wipe out continuity. We're not. We like continuity."

Added DiDio: "We addresss incongruities in continuity. This is
a direct sequel to Crisis on Infinite Earths. We're taking
everything that happened and are moving forward."

  * Donna Troy will play a role in Infinite Crisis. "She's going
back to Earth to recruit heroes on a mission she feels is
imperative toward the survival of the universe," DiDio said.

  * DiDio called the Infinite Crisis Secret Files, written by
Marv Wolfman, is tentatively scheduled for February. "He shows
how the Infinite Crisis is connected to Crisis on Infinite Earths
and explains things in the DC Universe that are going on. It's
the strongest Secret Files I've seen. He really does show you the
secrets that are going on."

  * Rucka said he always had plans to have Wonder Woman kill and.
"I felt Wonder Woman was a warrior and Wonder Woman should kill,"
he said.
DiDio said that the view of the iconic charaters is that
Superman is a fireman, Batman is a policeman and Wonder Wonman is
the social conscience.

"The relationship (among the three) as horrible as it is this
week in the DC Universe is probably the most interesting it's
been," Rucka said.

  * "Corrigan, Part 2" is a three-issue story that begins in
Gotham Central #37.

  * DiDio on Hal Jordan: "With the amoung of characters that
disappear after Infinite Crisis, Hal will play a bigger and
bigger role."

  * Asked if Bruce Wayne will die, DiDio said, "Bruce Wayne is
Batman. That's your answer."

  * Will George Perez be the artist of The Brave and The Bold?
"God, I would love to see that," DiDio said.

  * Bob Wayne said that 52's price point will be announced with
the weekly book's solicitation.

  * Asked if Dick Grayson will be reestablished in the Batman
family, DiDio said, "Yes."

THE BOOK OF LOST SOULS

  J. Michael Straczynski said The Book of Lost Souls, his new
Icon titled is "the most out-there title Marvel has published in
a very long time."

The first issue, featuring art and cover by Colleen Doran,
reaches stores on Oct. 26.

"Tor me, this is one of the most important things I've done in
comics in a long while," Straczynski said. "It has some of the
same feel as Midnight Nation, and Neil Gaiman's Sandman, in that
it is a book that will attract our usual readers, but which will
also have a great deal of mainstream and female appeal."

"It's exciting for me because this is the one Marvel title that
is closest in genre to contemporary dark fantasy. It is, by
turns, dark and menacing, hopeful and optimistic, very scary and
unabashedly romantic. In recent years, there really hasn't been a
monthly book out there from the big two comics publishers that
goes right for that audience, with a tragic, dark and romantic
hero, a whole new supernatural mythology, and a world that goes
from the weirdly fantastic to the back streets of urban cities."

Here's how Marvel describes the book:

"The Book of Lost Souls follows Jonathan, a man who lived over
a century ago who finds himself in a present day supernatural
world after a near-death experience. As Jonathan comes to grips
with this new world and new characters, so do the readers.

"Jonathan's unique supporting cast also includes 'the Dark
Man,' who may be God or may be the Devil, who has his own agenda
for Jonathan, and Mystery, the talking cat who is Jonathan's
constant companion, and who may be something more than he appears
to be."

"Whether it's a young woman who is disappearing into the
fantasy world of her own mind to avoid the harsh reality of a
terrible life, a street artist whose wall murals begin to come to
life, or a hired killer trying to escape the consequences of a
lifetime of murder, the stories are hard-hitting but hopeful, as
Jonathan steps over the line that may mean life or death for the
other characters in the story," Straczynski said.

INKWELL RAISES OVER $71 K FOR KATRINA RELIEF
From Joe Quesada

After nearly a month of hard work, a couple of technical glitches
and two weeks worth of wild auctioning, the comic's industry once
again proves that when it comes together, it's unstoppable.

Thanks to the donations of countless artist as well separate cash
donations by Neal Adams, Mark Andreyko and Jim Lee, the Inkwell
Katrina relief auctions raised a grand total of...

wait for it...

drum roll please...

$71,219.27

There really isn't much more to say other than thanks to all of
the great talents that participated, to all who gave so much and
joined our auction, to everyone who gave us press and web links
and to Kwan Chang, Chris Eliopulos, Vladamir Fiks Terry Maltos
for making it all possible. And in the world of thanks, I don't
think that there are enough words of gratitude for the work that
George Beliard and my wife Nanci Quesada have done over these
last few weeks. Thanks guys for the countless of hours and
sleepless nights you both put into this.

Katrina was a horror we hope we never see the likes of again, or
perhaps at least, we will be better prepared for in the future.
But, because life is filled with uncertainties, we will be
keeping the Inkwell website alive. May we never have to use it
for something this tragic ever again.

See ya in the funnybooks,

LIONS TIGERS AND BEARS RETURNS TO IMAGE

With the announcement that it was splitting with Alias,
Runemaster Studios together with Image Comics have confirmed for
Newsarama that the second volume of the acclaimed Lions, Tigers
and Bears by Mike Bullock and Jack Lawrence will be published by
Image in early 2006. Dave Lanphear and Ron Marz will return as
letterer and editor, respectively.

"There really is no way around it, Lions, Tigers and Bears was
always destined to be an Image book," series writer/co-creator
Mike Bullock said. "Jack and I are just thrilled that we've been
given the chance to keep it that way."

Image published the first LT&B miniseries earlier this year
(produced by Runemaster and Alias), and saw sold out single
issues, but Runemaster moved the property to Alias when the
company began publishing its own books. Through Alias, a Lions
Tigers and Bears trade was released in summer. While there are
reportedly copies of the Alias version of the trade remaining,
the first Lions Tigers and Bears release from Image will be a new
edition of the first Lions Tigers and Bears trade which will
include a new six-page story as well as new pinups. No specific
date was given for the release of Lions Tigers and Bears II #1.

"People have asked why I'm happy to be back at Image. My answer?
Well, y'know, it's Image," artist and co-creator Jack Lawrence
said. "I was 16 when they launched, and the memory of that stands
out as a benchmark in my life as a budding comic creator. I
devoured everything they put out back then, but if anything, I
think now is a more exciting time to be at Image than any other.
Professionalism, honesty, and bloody good books. That's all you
need, isn't it? And Image has all that in spades."

Image Publisher Erik Larsen: "Readers of all ages have responded
positively to Lions, Tigers and Bears. It's fun for young and
old. The response to the book has been very heartfelt and
enthusiastic. The first chapter of Lions, Tigers and Bears was
just the beginning. Readers will be astounded to read the next
exciting adventure. It's like nothing else on the stands."

There was no word on Runemaster's The Gimoles, a first issue fo
which saw print through Alias, but a second has yet to be
released.

HBO's Carnivale Creator Daniel Knauf Pens Iron Man

In a sometimes you see it, sometimes you don't release posted on
Marvel.com has confirmed what has been bouncing around the
internet since April, that is that Carnivale creator Daniel Knauf
will write six issues of the monthly Iron Man series for Marvel
in 2006. The rumor of Knauf writing Iron Man first came to light
when the creator mentioned it in a chat he participated in with
fans of the HBO series. Presumably, the issues will come
immediately following the conclusion of the delayed Warren
Ellis/Adi Granov restart which began in November of last year.
Issue #4 of the six part storyline shipped last month.

From Marvel.com:
"Daniel Knauf, creator and executive producer of HBO's Emmy-award
winning dramatic series Carnivale, is slated to take the reigns
of Marvel's epic Iron Man series for a spectacular six issue
story arc. The first highly anticipated issue is schedule to
debut Spring, 2006.

While Daniel Knauf - whose impressive credits also include the
films Blind Justice and Dark Descent as well as the CBS series
Wolf Lake - is no stranger to creative writing, this series will
mark his first comic book effort. Knauf will bring his innovative
storytelling magic to Marvel's Iron Man, the crusading Super Hero
who was first introduced by Marvel in the 1960's.

"What I love about Iron Man is that he's the one super hero who
doesn't eclipse his alter-ego," says Knauf. "Tony Stark is a very
complex, messed-up dude. This is a guy who desperately wants to
help the human race, but his creative energy is almost
exclusively dedicated to weapons design. What's wrong with that
picture?" Emanating from his explosive imagination, Knauf will
pen six issues of the monthly Iron Man title. The exhilarating
storyline will feature a string of high-visibility
assassinations, prompting an intense investigation by Tony Stark
(Iron Man's alter ego), as the killer appears to be employing the
armor and weapons of Iron Man. Stark is shocked and horrified by
the truth he uncovers, as a far deeper game of death and deceit
is being played - with Stark himself as one of the pawns!

"Daniel Knauf is one of the most creative storytellers of our
time. I'm a huge fan of his work, especially his focus on dark
themes and emphasis on good vs. evil," said Joe Quesada, Editor-
in-Chief of Marvel Comics. "Iron Man is a much-beloved Super Hero
in the Marvel Universe, and I know that Knauf's new exploration
of this character will certainly not disappoint."

"This arc will put Iron Man through the wringer," says Knauf. "I
really want to dial in with big, monumental fights and action
sequences, while taking Tony to some very dark places - forcing
him to face some hard truths as to what it really means to be a
hero and that, sometimes, 'meaning well' is simply not enough."
No artist has been named.

COUNTDOWN MINIS GET SPECIALS DURING INFINTE CRISIS

So - with Day of Vengeance and The OMAC Project wrapping up last
week and this week, respectively, are you left with the feeling
that something's a little...dangly? Not that the stories in and of
themselves weren't set with beginnings middles and ends, but that
the stories that were marketed as preludes to Infinite Crisis,
bridges between Countdown the seven issue miniseries debuting
next month didn't reveal everything about how they're tied to the
Crisis?

Don't close the longbox on Day of Vengeance, The OMAC Project,
Rann-Thanagar War and Villains United just yet. Each of the four
miniseries that led up to Infinite Crisis will have a 32-page
one-shot special released during Crisis which will tie the
miniseries storylines in to the unfolding, larger story.

"The specials will all tie directly into Infinite Crisis that
also explains how things were tied into Infinite Crisis in ways
we didn't know about," DC Executive Editor Dan DiDio told
Newsarama. "It pulls back the curtain on the four miniseries, and
shows just how their storylines are directly related to Crisis."

Obviously not wanting to go into too great of detail, DiDio did
give some general ideas of what would be covered in the Day of
Vengeance one-shot: "That special will show the Spectre's story
to its conclusion, and we'll also find out who was behind
Eclipso's move to seduce the Spectre and goad him into attacking
and destroying all magic in the DC Universe in the first place."

So - by that take, DiDio said, the one-shots aren't strictly
epilogues, catching up with the characters after the events of
the miniseries, nor are they direct continuations of the stories
from the four miniseries.

"They take the themes from the miniseries, and wrap up some of
the points from the stories as they tie into Infinite Crisis,"
Didio explained. "The four specials are much more Infinite
Crisis-centric than they are miniseries centric. The one that
will probably show this the clearest will be the Villains United
Special which doesn't focus on the Secret Six as much as it does
the villains of the cabal, and their role in Infinite Crisis."

All four specials are currently slated to see the creative teams
from the miniseries re-team, and will be spaced out, one a month,
starting with the Day of Vengeance Special in January, which will
be followed by Rann-Thanagar War Special in February, The OMAC
Project Special in March, and Villains United Special in April.

And yes, there is significance to the timing. Those particular
specials, those beats, tie in to what is occurring in the
Infinite Crisis story at the same time," DiDio said. "We wanted
the sequence of the specials to have a certain sense of priority
and importance, and we didn't want to give away some of the
secrets of Infinite Crisis, and we didn't want to weaken the
stories that we could tell in the specials, so when we put them
all side by side, we realized that it really adds value to space
them out like that."

And yes, DiDio knows that figuring out the battle plans for
Infinite Crisis and all its various lead-ups and ties ins' trade
collections is looking like a nightmare. Thing is, DiDio said
with a laugh, is that it's not his nightmare.

"Yeah, the guys in Collected Editions want to kill me. Thing is,
I'm approaching this story the same way we approached things
before there were collected editions to worry about. It's the
same problem hey run into when they try to figure out how to
collect comics that were done in the '60s and '70s in regards to
a trade. Stories in those days weren't clearly wrapped up - there
were subplots and things sometimes didn't fit into nice, neat
packages.

"I'm worried about doing the best comics, and I figure it can be
collected as things move forward. These are good problems to have
though. I want to make sure that everyone is excited about what's
coming out at that moment, and we'll make sure that everything of
importance is collected somewhere down the line. Honestly, we did
give this a lot of thought, but in the end, I didn't want
collected editions driving the way the story will be told."

Oh, and one final Crisis tease - DiDio confirmed that DC is
playing its cover game again, and stated that the Jim Lee cover
to Infinite Crisis #2 (featuring Power Girl in front of a vortex)
isn't the final cover that will see stands. "Jim gets paid too
much money to do something like that as the final cover," DiDio
said, laughing.

And finally, throughout the run of Infinite Crisis, DiDio will be
bringing his "Crisis Counseling" panel to Newsarama! Every
Wednesday that an issue of Crisis is due to his stands, DiDio
will answer questions from readers on the previous issue, as well
as tease events that are coming up in the upcoming issue. Look
for more on this shortly.

MONKEY PHARMACY SPLITS WITH ALIAS

Following last week's announcement that Runemaster Studios was
leaving Alias, Ken Lillie-Paetz has confirmed for Newsarama that
his studio, Monkey Pharmacy Productions, will be leaving Alias as
well.

Lillie-Paetz provided Newsarama with a statement about the split,
which reads:

Monkey Pharmacy Productions, creator/producer of the comic books
Elsinore and Monkey in a Wagon vs. Lemur on a Big Wheel (with co-
creator Chris Moreno), are pleased to announce that they have
regained the rights to both of these properties. Both comic book
series will be continued with new publishers and further
announcements will be made in the near future.

There has been an increasing amount of speculation about what was
happening with these two books, especially since the announcement
that Runemaster was leaving Alias. In mid-September, Mike Bullock
and I gave legal notice that both our studios were leaving Alias.
We are now able to announce that we have decided to take our
properties elsewhere.

Leaving Alias is by no means a setback for Monkey Pharmacy. We
feel we now have the opportunity to produce the best work
possible and be free from the series of unfortunate events that
has plagued Alias and our titles right from the beginning.

This is an exciting time for Monkey Pharmacy! We have plans to
publish the remaining issues of Elsinore (including a trade
paperback of Issues 1-3). The continuing battle for primate
supremacy that can only be fought by a monkey and a lemur will
also soon see new issues.

We are thrilled about some new stories we have planned for the
upcoming issue of Monkey vs. Lemur. One story addresses the sadly
common lemur/raccoon identity confusion in Mistaken Identity
Crisis on Infinite Earths and another will feature creators Chris
and Ken appearing as themselves - sort-of - in Moreno In A Wagon
vs. Lillie-Paetz On A Big Wheel.

The dream issue of Elsinore (#4) showcases a variety of artists
as they lend their own mad visions to the dreams of the inmates
and staff at the Elsinore Mental Hospital. Whether it is Josh
Medor's plague doctor in the fire of London, or Michael P.
Sincavage's haunting piece of Lucifer crawling with sinners that
have become maggots, or new series artist Mark Sparacio's
unleashing the elements as channeled through Miss Candra and
Ophelia, this issue will have lots to catch the eye and mind.
Issue #5 continues on with Doctor Murchison taking matters into
his own hands and a group therapy session that seems to suggest
the doctor's grasp on reality may be more tenuous than previously
thought.

We apologize for the period of time that it will take for our
relaunch but ask our fans to please be patient and that Elsinore
and Monkey in a Wagon vs. Lemur on a Big Wheel (and a few new
projects) will soon return bigger and better.

Thank you for all the support you have shown these titles!
Ken Lillie-Paetz
Monkey Pharmacy Productions

Newsarama Note: When asked for further clarification on the
split, Lillie-Paetz declined to comment, adding that his legal
counsel had advised him not to speak further of the matter
publicly.

In speaking to Newsarama on Wednesday, Alias Executive Director
Mike S. Miller said that the company had cancelled Elsinore "for
scheduling/non-delivery issues."

The solicitation for the first issue of Elisnore read:

Did the Apocalypse already happen without anyone noticing? Angels
scour the sky and demons stalk the streets. Meanwhile, the
patients of Elsinore Mental Hospital are under the control of a
secret society. Locked up without treatment, the inmates are
developing supernatural powers. Humankind's only hope for
survival is descending further into madness... The end begins
here.

So You Think the Cartoon Network Doesn't Matter?
All 7 Volumes of 'Naruto' in the Top 20
 September 26, 2005
Viz's Naruto manga dominated the BookScan report for the week
ending September 18th.  Just eight days after the premier of the
Naruto anime on the Cartoon Network all seven volumes of the
Naruto manga were in the top 20 with four titles in the top 10.
What's the evidence that exposure on the Cartoon Network created
new fans for the series?  The first volume of the Naruto series
came in second selling more copies than the most recent Naruto
release (Vol. 7).

Full Metal Alchemist, another manga series that benefits from
exposure of the FMA anime series on the Cartoon Network, also
continued its strong performance -- Vol. 1 is the best-selling
graphic novel so far in 2005 and Vol. 2 remains in the top ten,
where it will undoubtedly be joined by the newly-released Vol. 3
on the next BookScan list.

Naruto's dominance of the top 10 overshadowed the strong showing
of Tokyopop's DN Angel Vol. 9, which occupied the top spot on
the charts for the first time in the series' history.  Tokyopop
also has a series that is benefiting from TV exposure; Tokyo Mew
Mew A La Mode roared from #69 to #12 benefiting from the 4Kids'
Mew Mew Power anime series shown on Fox stations on Saturday
morning.

Manga was more dominant than ever on this bookstore graphic
novel sales report taking 48 out of the top 50 spots.  The
highest-ranking non-manga title on the list was Marvel's
Ultimates 2 Vol. 1, which came in at number 33.  The only other
non-manga title in the top 50 was Frank Miller's Sin City Vol. 1
at number 43.

Backbone Entertainment and Image Comics have announced the

include all three issues of the Death Jr. comic book written by
Gary Whitta and illustrated by Ted Naifeh (Courtney Crumrin).
Mike Mignola will provide the cover for the Death Jr. trade
paperback, which is slated for a November release from Image.

Death Jr., which appeals to both younger and more sophisticated
readers, tells the story of the son of the grim reaper and his
quirky band of friends including: Pandora, the little Goth Girl;
Smith & Weston the Siamese Twins; Stigmartha, a girl who bleeds
when she gets nervous: and The Seep, an armless, legless, foreign
exchange student in a jar.

Spiegelman in 'Virginia Quarterly Review'
'Portrait of the Artist as a Young %@&?!'
 September 30, 2005
The Virginia Quarterly Review is serializing Art Spiegelman's
next major work, which is a series of self-reflective
commentaries on his first collection of comics, Breakdowns, which
was published in 1977 and long out of print.  Pantheon wanted to
republish Breakdowns and Spiegelman decided to revisit and
comment on those early works with a series of new strips, which
the VQR is publishing under the title, Portrait of the Artist as
a Young %@&?!.  In the Fall 2005 issue of VQR, which is due out
in early October, Spiegelman presents his account of the creation
of his "Prisoner of the Hell Planet" story, originally published
in Short Order Comix #2 back in 1972.  The 12-page story will be
accompanied by a poster-size reprint of Prisoner of the Hell
Planet.

Retailers interested in carrying the Virginia Quarterly Review
can contact the magazine directly (for a 40% returnable discount)

Steve Geppi Named Baltimore's Top CEO
Industry News, Scoop, Friday, September 30, 2005
Steve Geppi, President and Chief Executive Officer of Diamond
Comic Distributors, was named Baltimore CEO of the Year last
night by Baltimore Smart CEO magazine at the publication's fourth
anniversary party.

The gala event, attended by many of the top business leaders in
the region, was held in the former National Bohemian building,
which has a spectacular view overlooking the water. The building,
part of an area rapidly undergoing gentrification, was the
perfect setting since it represented both the city's industrial
past and its resurgent present, both subjects near to Geppi's
heart.

Each issue of the magazine, which has also recently launched
Washington Smart CEO in the nation's capital, is filled with case
studies, columns and feature articles designed to help the
region's CEOs face the daily challenges of running a business.
For their CEO of the Year issue, company leaders from around the
region are nominated and the winner is then chosen by the
magazine's editorial staff.

Spotlighted in a lengthy article by award-winning writer-editor
David Callahan, Geppi's seemingly implausible rise from postal
carrier to head of an entire family of companies and part-owner
of the Baltimore Orioles has long been the stuff of legend within
the comic book world. Increasingly, though, it has become clear
that business and community leaders outside the industry have
taken note of Little Italy's favorite son as well.

"It isn't all about which CEO in town had that most spectacular
year," Callahan wrote of the award. "We try to name a CEO who has
had a number of interesting years and has positioned his company
to succeed in the future. We look to someone who is not just
important to Baltimore, but breaking important ground within his
or her own industry. We look for someone who has unique ideas and
a convincing and fascinating leadership style. Someone who gives
back to his employees, shareholders and community alike. We think
Geppi fits that bill."

After being introduced by publisher Craig Burris and Callahan,
Geppi gave a short speech touching on many of his favorite
subjects - family, friends, the comic book industry, and
Baltimore.
