CBEM 543 concludes with MY VIEW . . .

THE SURROGATES #1 (of 5)
32 pages, full color, $2.95
MATURE READERS (16+)

Created and written by Robert Venditti
Art by Brett Weldele

I love a mystery. I love them more when they are set in a science
fiction future. The Robot Novels by Asimov are some of the best
of that type. This mini-series is set in 2054 when virtual
reality and cybernetics (robotics for you folks who are sci-fi
challenged) have been fused to the point where most people
interact with the world without ever leaving home. Most beings
out there are sophisticated robots run by their owners but the
difference is that the owners are plugged in and experience
everything - sight, sound, touch, smell - that their surrogates
experience. Crime is almost non-existent, at least violent crimes
like rape and assault, because shooting a surrogate is just
damaging property. The owner is a remote eyewitness to the crime
and some newer surrogates have the ability to record while active
allowing the owner to relive events and police to see and feel
the same when it involves a crime. Most substance abuse is a
thing of the past as well.

So we begin the series with a couple out for the evening and
deciding to duck into an alley for a little slap and tickle. They
are approached by a person covered in a mask, presumedly against
the rain. They think he wants to watch so when they try to leave
they get a real shock - literally. He grabs them by the hands,
utters the word "live", and sends enough electricity to fry their
circuits beyond repair.  Yes, these two were surrogates. The cops
that investigate the scene are surrogates as well. They learn the
female is owned by a man, not uncommon for someone to use a
surrogate of another gender or race. What Detective Harvey Greer
sees when he plugs into the recording made by the surrogate leads
him to suspect the stranger has some high-tech equipment under
his clothes but he has yet to figure out the motive after seeing
none for the owners of the two surrogates.

We will see later on in the series that this is the work of
techno-terrorist who wants people to live their lives as they
used to before surrogates. Will he succeed or will Greer and his
partner find and stop him? Well that is the mystery to be solved.
Meanwhile this is a fascinating story well scripted and drawn
Weldele uses coloring to set moods and scenes with variations
from a rainy night, indoor lighting, videoconferencing and even
the black and white of the replayed recording Harvey experiences.
Everything about this is above par. Often you will judge a comic
by first impression of the cover. It is interesting, depicting
the main antagonists, but there is much more within the pages.
With just the right blend of script and art the story grabs you
and pulls you along until you are anxious to turn the page before
you finish one. There is a four-page text piece in the back that
fills in the blanks about this strange new world that are a must
read, and I really dislike this kind of filler material. With
this comic I welcomed the information and can't wait for the next
chapter.

COMICS OBSCURA                                        Mike Curtis
                                           shandafa@cyberback.com

[COMICS OBSCURA are facts Mike Curtis has dug out during his 30
years of collecting Superman and writing about comics. He is of
course the man behind SHANDA FANTASY ARTS the website for which
is at www.shandafantasyarts.net ]

THE ROAD TO HELL

Normally, celebrities smile when their pictures are taken now
matter how they feel at the time.  Especially comedians.
However, Bob Hope posed for one of the most unusual pictures in
his life with BUFFALO BOB SMITH in the 1950's when HOWDY DOODY
taped three weeks of shows in California.  In fact the photo was
not published until Buffalo Bob wrote his autobiography HOWDY AND
ME in the 1990's.  It's unknown why Hope was so angry, but the
photo shows a smiling Buffalo Bob and a thoroughly angry and
disgusted Bob Hope, looking more like a Charles Addams cartoon
than his usual genial self.

Desperado Publishing - December 2005 Solicitations

DUSTY STAR #1 (RES)
Written by ANDREW ROBINSON & JOE PRUETT
Art & cover by ANDREW ROBINSON

It's a different time and a strange place. It's burlesque shows
and all-night poker games, robots and flying ships, tattooed
horses and new wave cowboys and cowgirls with bad attitudes. This
is the world of Dusty Star, a tough-as-nails gunslinger with a
steely-eyed gaze and a draw as fast as greased lighting! An
appealing blend of western, science fiction, adventure and humor.

December 7 . 32 pg . FC . $3.50

THE LOOKING GLASS WARS: HATTER M. #1 (of 4)
Written by FRANK BEDDOR & LIZ CAVALIER
Art by BEN TEMPLESMITH

Like a violent birth, Royal Bodyguard Hatter Madigan explodes
through a puddle on the Champs Elysees from his world in the year
1859, shockingly separated from the future Queen of Wonderland he
had been entrusted to protect. Pursued by the police, taunted by
nationalistic Frenchmen and challenged by an evil black magician,
Hatter must evade the authorities while simultaneously searching
for lost princess Alyss! The myth of Hatter M begins here.

December 7 . 40 pg . FC . $3.99
