He is in production of his own self-published comic book called The Legendary Dark Silhouette and has copyrighted over 600 characters for his Jazma Universe.] SPOILER WARNING: THE FOLLOWING COLUMN MAY REVEAL SIGNIFICANT PORTIONS OF THE PLOTS OF SOME COMIC BOOKS, OR THE ENTIRE STORY. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. MOE Sidenote: Today went to A1 Comics and went through the A1 Comics Stargate and discovered a few new realities, such as: Joe St. Pierre's Bold Blood; CSI: NY #4 - Bloody Murder by IDW; Angel #4 by IDW; Dragonlance Chronicles #3 by DDP; The Dark Age Book One #4 (Astro City) by Wildstorm; Smoke by IDW; Sinbuck - Angel Eyes by Vigil & Barbour; Silent Dragon #3 by Wildstorm; Marcia Chen - Wraith Born; Nick Schley's Abiding Perdition by APC. Below are a few comics that struck my interest and a few comments I made to their perspective editors: 10th Muse #2 by Alias: Today went to A1 Comics and was delighted to find 10th Muse #2 and The Legend of Isis #4. Alias has some great titles on the shelves and I give major kudos to the publisher of these fine books. I am truly looking forward to the crossover of the 10th Muse with Victoria's Secret Service. Crossovers are always a lot of fun and it's interesting on how various characters will interact with each other. Emma is truly a workaholic and she reminds me of Juliette Lewis in the true story called Chasing Freedom. All Emma does is think of her case loads, she is preoccupied with work and a getaway to meet some hunky cowboys doesn't seem to phase her. With the reality that Emma lives, there is always that dark reality beyond and the World of the Dead is brought into focus quickly in this story. There is so much mystery in 10th Muse, I never know what to expect next. The story is great, the artwork is awesome, what more can I say? Oh ya, I enjoyed the 3 alternate covers to this one issue too! CSI: NY #4 - Bloody Murder by IDW: New York is the main entrance into the USA. What comes from overseas, over that great Atlantic every day is unimaginable, but CSI: NY #4 brought it all into focus. Anything can be brought over, maybe a dirty bomb, maybe a virus of some sort. Maybe the virus that causes a man to change into a werewolf. This story fits the bill for Halloween! I loved the way the werewolf legend was portrayed in this story and even the mentioning of men who wore wolf skins, such as your American Indians. CSI Stella Bonasera is a hard nosed investigator, she is relentless in her area of expertise and I can see how a woman that puts so much heart in her work, can get so punchy. Forensics is thrown in deeply into the investigation of victim Dani Cayman and how pieces of the puzzle started coming together, such as the victim's blood on the wolf's fangs and Charon held the wolf's head. You don't have to write words to make a story, a story can be discovered through forensic evidence. Forensic science is fascinating and that is one of the reasons that CSI gathers a huge audience. Usually after I watch CSI or read CSI the comic book, I will also watch Court TV or A&E for true forensic crime cases. It's hard to get away with murder in the 21st Century, forensics will get you everytime! Also, I enjoyed the look at the alternate life style of New Yorkers, such as your underground dwellers. Here in Sacramento, there are some underground dwellers in our city, but what was interesting is that in a place called Old Sacramento, underground dwellers will not stay under this part of the city, they claim that this area is too haunted. Thought I mention that, since it is close to Halloween. Anyway, enjoyed the story and I love the artwork, you have some talented staff over at IDW! Dead World #2 by Image: I enjoyed the black and white artwork, it's very detailed and goes great with the story. I see Deake is very popular with that motorcycle riding zombie. Deake is the key to the apocalypse. Deake is able to open the gate and bring in more zombies. Deake is not inexpendible, he is essential for the needs of darkness. Deake dreads his importance, he realizes that everything will be dead, this is what King Zombie wants. The book is as valuable as Deake and what a deadly combination to have the book and Deake and like a floodgate, death will prevail. I love this madness!! I just finished watching George A. Romero's Land of the Dead and Dead World would fit the bill as movie material to equal anything that George A. Romero produces! You guys are doing a great job with Dead World! Just keep it up! Dork Tower #32 by Dork Storm: I got a kick out of That Grrrl! You can probably do a spin-off title with That Grrrl, she has spunk and charisma and makes a great superheroine. I had a great laugh throughout Dork Tower #32, I am not an artist, but deal with many artists and I think my artists would have gotten a kick out of the constructive criticism an artist receives, there were many hilarious moments to the story. I have met many dorks that use the terms 'neat' and 'swell' and they haven't learned new phrases that would have made them sound cool. Today when I went to A1 Comics, I was deciding if I should get The Dark Age Book One #4 (Astro City) or Dork Tower #32. I decided on Dork Tower #32, because we all need some good laughs and you always provide them with your comic book! Battlehymn #3: I got a kick out of Johnny Zip being in the gossip rag, he lives his life in the fast lane, a real ladie's man and looks like Errol Flynn, very suave and charming and probably has a big ego. The shadow of Nazism and great Golden Age superheroics reflects in the story of your comic book. There is always plenty of great action, great artwork and I can see Battlehymn one day becoming an exciting Hollywood movie. Just need some Hollywood producer to discover your comic book! The Cisco Kid - Gunfire & Brimstone #2 by Moonstone: Wow! I really got a kick out of The Cisco Kid - Gunfire & Brimstone #2! Just like the movie The Deerhunter, there is a very intense scene as our Chivato toys with his pistol. I was thinking does he really want to end his life in this Russian Roulette game he is playing, with pistol to his temple? Just like his devil's advocate was taunting him, will this gunslinger meet his lethal fate and come across the men he killed in the afterlife? Is he afraid of the other side, what will happen to him after death? That was a very intense, intense scene and reminded me of when I went to the Winchester Mansion and discovered that this home was built for the spirits of the people who were killed by the Winchester rifle. The life of a gunslinger is not an easy one. I have also visited Billy the Kid's gravesite in New Mexico and feel a little bonded with the gunslinger, since I visited his grave and to find William Bonney in these very pages, blew me away! Again I say...wow! Who would have thought...that Billy the Kid would meet the Cisco Kid! Reality and fiction blurs! What a great conversation Billy was having with Cisco...'they call me kid too!" That is way cool! I love sexy Zora and with silver bullets thrown in the mix, you never know how the adventures of Cisco Kid will turn out! Keep them coming! Deadmen Tell No Tales #2 by Arcana: Damn! I cannot believe Deadmen Tell No Tales #2! This story was not only intriguing, it was great high seas adventure seen through a pirate's eyes! I am related to Captain Bartholemew Roberts (a Welch pirate), so I favor stories of pirates. I visited St. Thomas in which Bluebeard built his little castle getaway and I have been to Lake Charles, Louisiana in which the pirate LaFayette supposingly buried some treasure. Pirates are fascinating and they make good fodder for a comic book and now Deadmen Tell No Tales is available for us comic book aficianados! Deadmen Tell No Tales is even better than the movie "Pirates of the Carribean"! The artwork in this comic book is amazing and Blackbeard looks every bit of evil! He is very, very scary looking! I like the way the drama unfolds and how the Captain is told that he is spending more time in the cabin than in the quarterdeck, the interaction between characters is very believable. Seeing those canons ablaze in the high seas, charged up my adrenalyn! The cover of this comic book is more than awesome and throw in the Holy Grail and you have a mindblowing story that connects pirates with the Holy Grail that connects to the Knights Templar to even Dan Brown's book "The Da Vinci Code". This is just a marvelous fascinating read! Well, I better go, I have to swab the deck now! Battlepope #3 by Image: I love the story, I love the artwork and I love the brilliant colors! Battlepope #3 was simply amazing! Like always, there are always some very interesting characters in Battlepope. In this story, I enjoyed watching the exploits of that little demonic guy named Amon. He is funny. In fact the whole story was hilarious, with Battlepope yelling...'don't be shy with those bullets!" and Messiah yelling 'fishes and loaves!" I'm a Catholic and this comic book doesn't even peeve me off! Conan #21 by Dark Horse Comics: It's hard to imagine that in the future Conan the thief, will one day become Conan the king. Of course, he held many titles, barbarian, thief, conquerer and king. Seeing Conan contemplate on his next thievery was remarkable and teaming up with another legendary thief to go after Yara's jewel aka the Elephant's heart. It takes expertise planning and Conan does exactly that. I love the way Taurus blows the greenish mist on that lion, even ancient technology marvels our own modern technology. The ingrediants to that greenish mist is in the jungles and forests around them, as Taurus explains that the poison comes from the deadly Black Lotus. I loved the way Conan tackled the mighty beast and as the story continues, other beastly monstrocities unfold, such as the humongous black spider. This truly is Conan at his best! Name: Quantum: Rock of Ages #6 of 12 Publisher: Dreamchilde Press Creative Force: Clark, Rodriguez, Rivera, Kwon, Gigi Email: quantumcomic@hotmail.com Overviewed by: Paul Dale Roberts, Publisher www.jazmaonline.com Comments: Billy Capra has seen alot and I loved the way you laid down the run down on what he has seen from arctic winters to blood red sunsets, to nuclear rain, etc. Yes, this story was sexually explicit, but it needed to be done. Blu is one sexy sensualist (as she calls herself) and her whole life is about to change, since she has the mysterious stone in her naval. She has a lot of spunk, especially the way she is willing to wear a certain item in a certain part of her gorgeous body to perform the deeds she needs to do, if you catch my drift. Thanks for the great bio on Blu, which makes the reader closer to the characters of the story. If Joe ever had to fight off his own demons, it is small fry now as he confronts Deimos! Just like the old TV series Sliders, I never knew what to expect in each episode, as they confronted new and different realities. In this case, the reality changed with the Clinton Administration. Not Bill Clinton, but George Clinton as we know him as the songwriter of Atomic Dog! When he took over, he allowed vices such as drugs, prostitution to flourish and kept it legal. I love the way the Quantum bearers have that connection, through some type of telepathy. Like always this is adventure that takes the reader into the realms of the unknown and mysterious! Each and every character is fascinating, such as Cybik that reminds me of a Borg. There are some great movies coming out, like Doom, Aeon Flux and Harry Potter, but what is taking Hollywood so long to make a movie out of Quantum: Rock of Ages? The stories are thrilling, action packed and breath-taking, when you pick up an issue of Quantum: Rock of Ages, the images and stories are unforgettable and will have you coming back for more! Multiverse Observer and Explorer signing off until next time............... _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- COMICS OBSCURA Mike Curtis shandafa@cyberback.com [COMICS OBSCURA are facts Mike Curtis has dug out during his 30 years of collecting Superman and writing about comics. His website for his comic imprint is www.shandafantasyarts.net ] THEY READ THEIR COMICS ON THE CASTING COUCH One favorite game among comic readers during the early Silver Age was casting movies of their favorite superheroes. In letter columns of FANTASTIC FOUR, one of the more interesting casting calls came from England and had all British actors in the parts, including Herbert Lom as the Thing, Peter Cushing as Mister Fantastic and Honor Blackman as the Invisible Girl. Over at the Justice League lettercol, there were a lot more entries, but most of them had SEA HUNT star Lloyd Bridges as Aquaman. _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- [9] My View David LeBlanc ComicBkNet@aol.com http://members.aol.com/comicbknet David LeBlanc is the Editor of the Comic Book Network Electronic Magazine; which won the prestigious Eagle Award for Favorite Comic Book Ezine in 2001. David's favorite motivational phrase is: BEHOLD THE TURTLE, HE ONLY MAKES PROGRESS WHEN HE STICKS HIS NECK OUT! TOP COW COMICS WWW.TOPCOW.COM CITY OF HEROES #3 32 pages, full color, $2.99/$4.60CAN Waid/Nakayama/Basaldua/Oback (Note: There are no creator credits on any story page that I could find. It is an apparent editorial mistake or an omission in the final printing that was missed.) This is the comic derived from a role playing game. Familiarity with the game is not needed to enjoy the story but there are 6 pages of text filler, framed as The Paragon Times designed to help newcomers understand this universe and le existing fans expand their fun with fan fiction and art submissions. There is even a comic strip by Aaron "Nodwick" Williams about the Q-4orce. This is a group of heroes that look suspiciously like characters from another comic by Aaron, but it is fun anyway, that just adds another level to those in the know. The main story is about the heroes of Paragon City. We open with them confronting an enemy of leviathan proportions who holds their greatest hero, Statesman, dead in his hand. Among their ranks an archer, Manticore, asks for the body now lifeless with his arrow in it. There is a plan to resurrect the hero but he needs to be quick, even while his comrades believe he is a traitor. As it turns out he may be too late for even a powerful sorceress to help. But he has a back up plan. There is plenty of action and plots within plots to lead into future issues. The art is very good as well. It is not too difficult to jump in at this point and it looks to be interesting enough to stay with. CITY OF HEROES #4 32 pages, full color, $2.99/$4.60CAN "Smoke and Mirrors" Part 1 of 3 Writer - Troy Hickman Pencils - Wilson Tortosa Colors - Sonia Oback with Zach Matheny Design - Chaz Riggs Lettering - Troy Peteri Cover - Rodolfo Migliari A new arc starts with Statesman back in the front of the fight against evil. In fact, they are fighting trolls, sent by someone that even their mind reader can't determine. We find out that the Circle of Thorns is seeking 3 people to conduct a ritual that will allow a demon into our reality. SIster Psyche and Statesman track down the first. He is an older man who once was a hero himself, a speedster known as Breakneck. But will they be able to stop his capture? The interlude where Breakneck tells stories of the past are interesting and the art is fine, though I noticed it is mostly people and very little background in most panels. There is a subplot of a young man trying to tell Statesman of his desire to become a hero only to be caught up sooner than he expected. These little touch make the characters a bit more real as Manticore reacts to the situation. It seems like a typical 3-part hero epic but still interesting to follow. _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- COMICS OBSCURA Mike Curtis shandafa@cyberback.com [COMICS OBSCURA are facts Mike Curtis has dug out during his 30 years of collecting Superman and writing about comics. His website for his comic imprint is www.shandafantasyarts.net ] LIFE IS STRANGE WHEN YOU HANG WITH THE STOOGES That would have to be EMIL SITKA. This actor performed with every film incarnation of the Three Stooges, and was briefly one himself. His first film with the team was Curly's last, HALF WITS HOLIDAY and he continued on through the shorts with Shemp and Joe Besser as the third stooge. When the Stooges went to feature films with Joe DeRita as the third member of the team, he had parts in each film. His usual role was that of a professor or elderly man, though he played a minister in a particular Shemp comedy (we'll come back to that.) Later on, when Larry suffered a stroke, the team received an offer and Moe recruited Emil to play Larry's brother with Joe DeRita and himself in the never filmed THE JET SET. Shortly before Moe's death, the team was slated to film MAKE MINE MANILA with Moe, Joe and Emil but that film offer died with Moe. Publicity photos were taken of the new team that never made a film. (You can see one at http://www.emilsitka.com/biography10.htm.) Now back to that Shemp comedy.....in it Emil plays a minister who is trying to marry Shemp and a lady. His phrase "HOLD HANDS YOU LOVEBIRDS" is familiar to viewers of the film PULP FICTION as it is heard during one scene. This revitalized Emil's popularity late in his life, leading to personal appearances. In gratitude, the phrase is inscribed on Emil's tombstone.http www.emilsitka.com/biography12.htm _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- [10] New Comic Book Releases List [NCRL] by Charles LePage chuck@comiclist.com http://www.comiclist.com New Comic Book Releases List for Wednesday, 11/02/2005, compiled by Charles LePage with information from Suncoast Comics.
