Eastern Standard Time From: NamelessChuck To: ComicBknet Dear David, I thought you might want to include the following in the e-mag: Although the Doonesbury comic strips about the Harriet Miers confirmation hearings that were set to run in newspapers were withdrawn when she withdrew as a Supreme Court candidate, at least one of the strips made newsprint; the strip intended for November 1 was printed in the Hartford Courant on that date. All of the withdrawn Miers strips can be viewed online at the Doonesbury.com web site. [See full article in THE NETWORK BUZZ below. - D.L.] I've been waiting for this out of Adult Swim for close to a year now, and the ads they've been running for it during their late- night bumps say, in so many words, that their Standards and Practices people have never been more tightly clenched in their lives. And, considering some of their other recent output ("Squidbillies", "Harvey Birdman", "Aqua Teen Hunger Force", the soon-to-arrive "Minoriteam" and the late, lamented "Venture Brothers"), I'll guess that "Boondocks" will be safely caustic. +++++ From: "Ken Gale" nuffsaid@riseup.net Subject: re: Comic book & internet radio show Date: Fri, 4 Nov 2005 17:29:47 -0500 Hi, folks, Please post and forward to appropriate chat rooms, web pages and e-lists! This will be live on the internet, too. And archived on the net for a week, as well. The next installment of 'Nuff Said!, the Brigadoon of comic book radio shows, will be early Wednesday morning November 9th (overnight on Tuesday the 8th) from 3:30 AM to 6:00 AM eastern time. I again substitute for Susan Brown's overnight show, "Punk and Hardcore," but this time I'll be interspersing music and comics talk. Assuming I don't hear from either of the artists I have a call out to, I'll be doing a listener call-in show about graphic novels. A librarian recently asked me for a list of recommendations and I turned that list into an article for Interlac and now I'll turn the article into a radio show, hopefully with a lot of input from you. For those of you in the listening area who won't be up that late, you can tape the radio using a vcr by simply connecting the input of your vcr to the output of your stereo. There is a more detailed description of this on our web site: http://www.comicbookradioshow.com/vcr.html. There is also software that enables you do record the live stream off your computer. It looks like my frequency of subbing for Susan is increasing. But, the WBAI web site (http://www.wbai.org) is now archiving ALL shows (www.archive.wbai.org) (note: the typoes have been corrected). So you'll be able to listen to this show at your convenience, but only for a week then it'll be gone. And I'm sure they'll keep track of the hits each show gets so spread the word. Go to November 9 and click on "Punk and Hardcore" for 3:30 AM. I've been doing comic book-oriented radio shows since 1993, live-streamed over the internet for the past several years, usually interviewing a creator. I've covered all styles and all eras, pointing out the diversity of the art form to a radio audience who was often unaware of the versatility of sequential art. I used to be weekly, but since 2002 I have done frequent specials, fill-ins and guest stints, keeping the show alive (see http://www.comicbookradioshow.com/nsgl18.html for a recent list and links to the past Guest Lists). Many other WBAI producers, especially Susan Brown and Sidney Smith, have welcomed 'Nuff Said! segments on their shows and I can't thank them enough. Sidney will probably be playing something soon. I've been in many different time slots, especially on Tuesdays; check the web site. WBAI-FM, 99.5, is a 50,000 watt station broadcast from the Empire State Building. The signal usually gets out to New Haven, CT; Westhampton, L.I.; the Poconos of Pennsylvania, Orange County, NY and Trenton & Princeton, NJ, the recent signal or transmitter problems seem to have been fixed. But via the internet for an even greater distance, natch. WBAI-FM is a listener-supported Pacifica Network station. Bernard White, the program director, said on the air June of 2002, soon after the last regular episode, that 'Nuff Said! was not canceled, just put "on hiatus," but when he last brought out a new schedule 'Nuff Said! was absent from it. There are constant rumors that a new schedule is coming, but I'm not sure if anyone pays attention to them any more so perhaps that means they're more imminent. However, no new schedule has come out, so it can still be changed. Among his criticisms of comic books are that they are "narrow-focused" and only appeal to "middle-class white males." Even mainstream comics don't deserve those criticisms (except for "male") and nearly every African-American who works at the station is into comics and has told him so, sometimes on the air. It seems to fall on deaf ears. And yet, here I am still on the air talking to comic book creators and fans, now with a slightly more predictable schedule in the middle of the night. Check the web site often, especially on a Tuesday. One person e-mailed me to criticize this paragraph of my announcement. The situation has slightly changed, so this paragraph has slightly changed, too. And by way of optimism, during the past membership drive, he was on the air pitching with Will Eisner's latest work as the premium for that show and was engineering a show with Seth Tobacman of World War 3 Illustrated. Please spread the word about the show! Even if you're not in the area, you can still listen in via the net, live or otherwise. Thanks. FELL, created & written by Warren Ellis and featuring art by Ben Templesmith, debuted in early September to almost universal positive praise. With high demand for the series, Image Comics is going back to press both of the issues. Each issue will feature the same cover and content, no changes will be made to the printings aside from an indicator in the indicia that the books are Second Printings, which are scheduled to be in stores in early December. Both fans and retailers are still talking about the book's format - a 24-page book featuring 16 pages of story and several pages of 'back matter' - text stuff, sketches, background material, letters, and more, all for only $1.99. Says Ellis, "Everyone except Image thought I was crazy for devising the format. The great and the good told me I was stupid for pitching a smaller, denser book for less money. To me, this is a huge vindication, and a justification for Ben Templesmith killing himself to produce his career best. It's my hope now that more people follow us into this format and make it a real alternative for short stories and serialisations. And I hope that the people who gambled some pocket change on FELL got what they wanted, and continue to do so." To accompany this dense storytelling, there needed to be an artist who could handle the visual experimentation of the format, but also be able to tell a clear and accessible story. That's where Ben Templesmith stepped up to the plate. "Many many many thanks to all the people who've come out and decided to have a try of a non super hero creator owned book in a new format," said Templesmith. "At first I thought simply working with Warren Ellis was the biggest honour, but selling out of what was even overprinted for #1 and #2 just takes the cake for me. I am, to put it mildly, well chuffed and humbled. Cheers to all who bought it, and of course, especially Warren for letting me be the guy to draw it." FELL #1 was printed above the standard Image overprint, plus the first issue was overshipped and still sold out, while FELL #2 sold out even quicker despite its own overprint. Both issues have seen heavy reorder activity. Orders for FELL 2ND PRINTING #1 (SEP058243) and FELL 2ND PRINTING #2 (SEP058244) are available now, as are advance orders on FELL #3 (SEP051691). Your local retailer can contact their Diamond Customer Service Representative for ordering. +++++ BLOODSTAINED PRODUCTIONS RELEASES NEW PREVIEW!
