Wayne Summit On October 21-23, hundreds of specialty market retailers traveled to Ft. Wayne, IN for the second of Diamond & Alliance Game Distributors' 2005 Retailer Summits, enjoying a weekend of information, entertainment and much more! As with 2005's Baltimore show and previous Summits, attendees took part in educational retailing workshops, exciting and enlightening supplier presentations and a number of fun activities, in addition to giveaways and door prizes. "We think it's great to get so many of our customers together at the same time," said Diamond Vice President of Marketing Roger Fletcher. "Our collective hat is off to the sponsoring suppliers, Diamond employees and everyone else who helped make both Summits possible, and especially to our retailers, without whom they wouldn't have been possible. Hopefully we'll get to do it all over again in 2006!" Baltimore Summit Retailing Workshop Files Available for Download Retailers should also note that numerous Retailing Workshop files from the 2005 Retailer Summit in Baltimore, MD are now available for download from the News & Info (https://retailer.diamondcomics.com/main/news.asp) page of Diamond Online's Retailer Services Area. These files include much of the vital information that was discussed in workshops like "Attracting New & Different Customers," "Maryland Comic Book Initiative/Libraries," "Maximizing FCBD" and "Diamond Tech Tips." These files are in .PDF format, viewable with Adobe Acrobat, and can be viewed at https://retailer.diamondcomics.com/main/news.asp#2005_Retailer_Sum mit_Workshop_&_Presentation_Files_for_Download. Further, Diamond is currently in the process of updating and upgrading the Retailer Services Area, so check the News & Info page frequently for new features and information as it becomes available! Updated Diamond Bookshelf Website Features New Look, Content The Diamond Bookshelf website - perfect for retailers looking to partner their stores with libraries and educators in their areas - has been dramatically transformed with new information and updated features! Available at http://bookshelf.diamondcomics.com/, the Bookshelf is designed to help educators and librarians discover how comic books and graphic novels can become a dynamic and positive addition to classrooms and libraries. Additionally, it's a can't-miss resource for any specialty shop looking to work with teachers and librarians, and can also be used to provide your local educators with information on sequential art. In addition to an all-new look - designed in conjunction with Diamond's revamped Bookshelf Magalog (magazine & catalog), the improved website reflects the Bookshelf's dedication to providing a one-stop graphic novel resource for teachers and librarians. Understanding that schools and libraries have separate needs, the Bookshelf website has been divided into two sites: a School Site - with articles and lesson plans specific to teachers - and a Library Site, with articles and cataloging information designed for librarians. Other updated Bookshelf features include: A History of Comics: A brief, illustrated timeline chronicles landmark events in the history of the comic book medium. Also included is a page describing the terms "comic book" and "graphic novel." An All-New Glossary: The Bookshelf's improved glossary of comic book/graphic novel terms now includes nearly 40 separate entries and also features related illustrations. All-New Lesson Plans: The site also features four brand new lesson plans designed to help teachers incorporate graphic novels into their classrooms. Currently, there are lesson plans for Elementary, Middle and High School, with more to come! Updated Cataloging: To make integrating graphic novels into a librarian's collection easier, Diamond has updated its cataloging information to include an informational "How to" article by industry professional Kat Kan. More Testimonials: Hear from teachers and librarians all over the country who have successfully integrated graphic novels into their classrooms and collections! Also, a special page is dedicated to critical praise from newspapers and independent scholars from across the nation. Resources & References: The Bookshelf's list of helpful resources and references - both online and in print - has significantly increased, allowing teachers and librarians access to various sources of information, including the Comic Shop Locator Service! The Diamond Bookmark: Moreover, visitors to the Diamond Bookshelf can sign up for Diamond's forthcoming educator-specific email newsletter: the Diamond Bookmark (http://bookshelf.diamondcomics.com/subscribe.asp)! And much more! Retailers should also be aware of Diamond's free Library Introduction Letter (https://retailer.diamondcomics.com/main/library_letter.asp), which can be used to offer your store as a source of graphic novels, trade paperbacks and more for the schools and libraries in your area. And be sure to visit the News & Info page (https://retailer.diamondcomics.com/main/news.asp) of Diamond Online's Retailer Services Area to download the Diamond Bookshelf Catalog in Adobe Acrobat format (.pdf file extension)! Retailers Weigh in on Changes to Previews Retailer Order Form Print and Online Editions Evaluated In August, Dialogue's "Info Please" poll asked retailers to share their opinions regarding the icons used in Previews and the Previews Retailer Order Form to denote special items, such as Gem of the Month, Featured Item, and more. Table 1 - Do you refer to a copy of the current Previews catalog as you compile your monthly Previews order? Yes 97.98% No 2.02% Table 2 - Do you refer to a copy of the current print version of the Previews Retailer Order Form as you compile your monthly Previews order? Yes 96.75% No 3.25% Table 3 - Are the Gem of the Month, Featured Item and Spotlight On icons/designations in the printed Previews Retailer Order Form useful when you are compiling your Previews order? Yes 65.19% No 29.20% Don't Know 5.60% Nearly all respondents use the print editions of Previews and the Previews Retailer Order Form when compiling their monthly orders (Tables 1-2). Additionally, nearly 2/3 of all Diamond customers find use in the Previews icons, as seen on Table 3. "It's great to see that our customers find the icons beneficial - and also good to know that so many shop owners use the print edition of the Retailer Order Form!" said Diamond Executive Director of Marketing Communications Shelley Myers. Table 4 - If Diamond were to begin listing all Previews icons in the Previews Retailer Order Form, how would this impact your monthly ordering process? Positively 22.32% No Change 49.70% Negatively 7.74% Don't Know 20.24% Table 5 - If Diamond were to begin listing all Previews icons in the Previews on DOS program, how would this impact your monthly ordering process? Positively 8.33% No Change 59.62% Negatively 6.09% Don't Know 25.96% Table 6 - If Diamond were to begin listing all Previews icons in its Previews on Windows program, how would this impact your monthly ordering process? Positively 14.84% No Change 52.58% Negatively 6.77% Don't Know 25.81% Table 7 - If Diamond were to begin listing all Previews icons in its online Initial Ordering program, how would this impact your monthly ordering process? Positively 15.56% No Change 51.48% Negatively 4.81% Don't Know 28.15% When asked about the potential addition of all Previews icons to the Previews Retailer Order Form, Previews on DOS, Previews on Windows, and the Initial Order program at Diamond Online's Retailer Services Area (Tables 4-7), more than half indicated it would have no effect on their monthly ordering process, with more than 25% stating such a change would have an indeterminate effect. "With these potential modifications having no clear benefit to a majority of our customers, and potentially negative effects on more than a quarter, Diamond likely won't be adding all Previews icons to its various order forms," said Myers. Diamond would like to thank all who participated in the poll. We encourage everyone to participate in all future polls, and to direct findings to suggestions@diamondcomics.com or your Diamond Customer Service Representative.
