ISN'T THAT KIND OF BACKWARDS, EVEN FOR THEM?

Many radio shows made the leap to television in the later 1940's
and early 1950's.  Some even leaped back, such as HOWDY DOODY
which became a radio show after its television debut.  Leave it
to the British spy adventure THE AVENGERS to take this move to a
new extreme.  In the late 1970's long after its television run
had ended, the series made its dramatic radio debut in the nation
of South Africa.

SPOILER WARNING:
THE FOLLOWING COLUMN MAY REVEAL SIGNIFICANT PORTIONS OF THE PLOTS
OF SOME COMIC BOOKS, OR THE ENTIRE STORY. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Name: Night #3
Publisher: Jester Press
Price: $2.95
Creative Force: Troy Hasbrouck & Buddy Prince
Email: fanmail@jesterpress.com
Comments:  FBI agents Sabrina Voght and partner Agent Andrew
Whildon are after the werewolf David Skinner.  I read this story
after watching "100 Scariest Movie Moments" in which they ran
down movies like The Sixth Sense, The Changling, Evil Dead, The
Wolfman.  In my mind I was comparing werewolf David Skinner to
Lon Chaney's The Wolfman and there is no real comparison.
Werewolf David Skinner is much more scarier than the original
Wolfman who merely strangled his victims.  Another very scary
character is Mr. E and the way he controls his army of
werewolves.  What a strange scene when you have a room full of
gangbangers like The Reds, The Phreaks going up against an army
of werewolves and throw in the FBI agents for good measure.  It's
vampire v. werewolf, it's fangs v. bullets.  There is even some
good humor in this drama, as a comical interaction happens
between a dazed Envladski as he tries to get his point across to
Agent Voght, FBI.  The deadly round used to destroy Mr. E, was a
combination of holy water, aconite, silver nitrate, garlic and
wood.  Voght gets herself in some hot situations, as she
contemplates using one pistol against 3 targets: 3 werewomen.
Mr. E gets struck with the deadly combination round and his
demise is spectacular to behold!  Night #3 was vivid, fast paced
non-stop action, there are enough cliffhangers for a dozen
Saturday serials!

Name: The Black Enchantress and Psyche - Witchgirls Inc. - The
Return of Miranda the Mermaid #2 Dec 05
Publisher: Heroic Publishing
Price: $2.99
Creative Force: Many creators.
Website: www.heroicpub.com
Comments:  Doraleen Dailey, Secret Service makes her appearance
right in the beginning of the story and escorts Mrs. Hunter.  Of
course, we all know Mrs. Hunter has some unique abilities.  Mrs.
Hunter meets Miranda the Mermaid, actually it's Jenna who is the
mermaid and has taken on this persona, because of a magic comb.
The real Miranda once gave the magic comb to General Eisenhower
who later became President of the United States.  Jenna receives
a top secret assignment in which she goes after pirates on jet
skis and the scenes are right out of a James Bond movie.  The
second story is called 'The Trial!".  Jeffrey Daniels is on
trial, chained, naked, gagged in court.  You will learn how the
defendent perceives women.  There is a surprising AIDS lecture by
the Black Enchantress and Vertigo's Death actually makes an
appearance in this lecture!  Yes, we have a crossover between The
Black Enchantress and Vertigo's Death!  Very cool!  You will
learn that there is no such thing as safe sex, but what if you
only had hand contact with the opposite sex, it doesn't dwell on
that matter, it basically comes down to having safe sex, is
absintence.  Witchgirls Inc. is actutely entertaining and
morbidly fascinating.

Name: Flare #29 Dec. 05
Publisher: Heroic Publishing
Price: $2.99
Creative Force: Many creators.
Website: www.heroicpub.com
Comments:  Remember there was this controversal Dynasty episode
on TV, in which two of the main characters, being women get into
some fisticuffs?  Well, you find a controversal scene in which
Trish has a liking for Terri Feran's main squeeze and Terri jumps
in and whallops Trish in the mouth, knocking out her tooth.
Terri acts very nonchalant about the matter, after the deed is
done and Trish seems very humiliated.  The main squeeze named
Lucas doesn't approve of Terri's behavior, but Terri with her
convincing methods, seems undaunted by Luca's remarks and Lucas
sort of lets the whole incident slide to oblivion.  Terri
displays her incredible powers, she is able to stop bullets with
her photokinetic powers.  Later Duel and Feran go up against each
other and it's one-on-one combat that is spectacular to behold.
Of course, the colors and the artwork is magnificent, so there
is plenty of eye-candy to admire.  The second story is a
Halloween treat.  You will get a kick out of Olga's Halloween
costume, she dresses up as Wonder Woman!  The costume party is
fun and exciting!   Flare is disarmingly honest in character
personas, sometimes painfully funny with interactions between the
characters and sharply observant with the storyline.

Although Superman playsuits for children had been produced since

HUNTER KILLER #2
32 pages, full color, $2.99/$4.60CAN
Writer - Mark Waid
Pencils - Marc Silvestri
Inkers - Joe B. Weems V & Matt "Batt" Banning
Ink Assists - Ryan Winn, Pat Aquino & Tom Bar Or
Colors - Steve Firchow
Letters - Troy Peteri

The Hunter Killer squad has locate the "catalog" which is the
list of all the known ultra sapiens, people with extraordinary
powers. It turned out the catalog is in genetic code of one such
being named Ellis. His parents tried to prevent his capture and
are now dead. He does not know who to trust, least of all
Samantha, the head of the squad. We, the reader, know there is
another group closing in on his location even as he is whisked
away by Samantha's group.

The dynamic of this issue is the struggle for Ellis' heart and
mind. He tries to escape and almost creates a disaster. Samantha
reveals her secret but Ellis suddenly disappears. Ellis is also
and ultra sapien and his power is that of a mimic. When another
ultra is close enough he mimics their power. Being new to this he
is very dangerous to himself and others. Helmar Khole, also known
as Transporter heads the team chasing after Samantha and Ellis.
He can teleport so when he got close to Ellis the power rubbed
off. Now Ellis is transporting uncontrollably. As everyone tries
to persuade him to their side a new element is added and a great
cliff hanger ends the issue.

The team is putting out some high quality stuff. Waid is a master
storyteller and the finishes on Silvestri's art makes a great
package. The alternate cover, by Linsner is sure to leave the fan
boys drooling. In just two issues they have created a new world
that gets more interesting all the time.

HUNTER KILLER #3
32 pages, full color, $2.99/$4.60CAN
Writer - Mark Waid
Pencils - Marc Silvestri
Inker - Joe B. Weems V
Colors - Steve Firchow and John Starr
Letters - Troy Peteri

As noted before, this series gets more interesting each time. Now
we learn the background of just how pervasive the ultra sapiens
are in the world. It goes back to the days of JFK when what was
thought to be the Cuban Missile Crisis by the world was really a
threat of an army of ultra sapiens. He actually signed over our
government to ultra sapien James Morningstar. After that glimpse
we are back to the cliffhanger from last issue. What is really
neat about his issue is getting a look into the world and
headquarters of the Hunter Killers. The areas they operate out of
are cloaked as dangerous to the public, like a radioactive
abandoned installation. They even have an ultra that maintains
optical illusions of the people and place to fit the cover story.
Samantha explains to Ellis how they are trying to find all the
ultras - the good ones they recruit, the bad ones they terminate.
Since he has the link to all of those beings in hiding they need
him to aid them and his country. The question we have is this all
a legitimate story, is it another cover or perhaps the Hunter
Killers are being used as well.

The story is the key to this series and Waid has it moving at the
right pace while developing the characters. All the details along
the way, like the few I've mentioned, flesh out the story by
setting the tone and revealing motivations. We still don't know
if Ellis will willingly join in on the hunt but it matters not.
We have a lot to ponder until the next issue.

HUNTER KILLER DOSSIER
32 pages, full color, $2.99/$4.60CAN
By Mark Waid & Marc Silvestri

Once you become a fan of this series you may want to pick up this
guide to the main characters. It has a quick recap of the basis
of the series and another insight from Mark Waid. The bulk of
the book is then a series of full page dossiers on the major
characters with an artist's rendition of that character on the
opposite page. This is really helpful information to flesh out
the characters and some of the backstory. There is also a peak at
the next two issues in the back.  Worth getting to really immerse
yourself into this promising adventure.

WITCHBLADE #86
32 pages, full color, $2.99/$4.60CAN
Writer - Ron Marz
Penciler - Keu Cha
Inker - Jay Leisten
Colorer - Brian Buccellato
Painted pages by Keu Cha, Lettered by Troy Peteri

This episode is a good break from the multi-issue arcs. Sarah is
has been teamed with another detective to investigate a murder in
a museum. It is a gruesome decapitation and we soon find out that
a haunted suit of Samurai armor is on the rampage. But there is
more than meets the eye here. We are given a backstory about the
ghost and it seems the blade he carries is the power behind the
evil being perpetrated. The question is will the Witchblade be
enough to defeat this ancient terror.

I found this story well paced and engaging. There is additional
characterization developing between Sarah and the old Chinese man
we have seen before. He appears to be a source for her in some
circumstances. Marz is building his own world for this long
running character. The art this issue stands out, especially the
flashback to the ancient battles. But the real crux of this issue
is the insight into Sarah's own bond to the Witchblade and the
parallel to the demon blade that demands blood. It gives her
something to ponder.

WITCHBLADE #87
32 pages, full color, $2.99/$4.60CAN
Writer - Ron Marz
Penciler - Chris Bachalo
Inker - Jon Holdredge
Colorer - Brian Buccellato Lettered by Troy Peteri

A new direction begins in this issue as Sarah is transferred
downtown to headquarters to work "special" cases. Much space is
taken up with goodbyes, with her boss and the janitor. At her
new digs she is once again teamed with Gleason, who aided her
after her recovery and the recent injury to her partner. Now
working out of the basement she dives into some unsolved cases
and finds similarities. It isn't long before she has to once
again confront an evil presence with the power of the witchblade.

The changing artists are getting to me on this title. It is not
that there is any bad art, it is that the style is different in
three succeeding issues. Just when I got used to a certain look
for Sarah from Cha I am jolted with a younger look with different
coloring by Bachalo, Holdredge and Buccellato. Other than that it
is a typical story with some characterizations and fill in on new
developments and some action involving some supernatural beings
who defy Sarah and her power. A decent transition with plot
elements for the future. Like the last issue it stands alone as
an easy read and a good jump on point.

WITCHBLADE #88
32 pages, full color, $2.99/$4.60CAN
Writer - Ron Marz
Penciler - Michael Choi
Inker - Sal Regla
Colorer - Brian Buccellato and Chad Fidler
Lettered by Troy Peteri

Yet another pencil and ink team, the third in three issues. This
team is very tight but as I said before the difference is
noticeable from one to the next. But then I care more for a decent
story as long as the art is not terrible. Far from it, these guys
are very good.

Ron reaches back to last issue to bring in the female janitor who
comes to Sarah for help in finding herr granddaughter who never
came home from school. She knows something is wrong but the local
police say she has to wait 24 hours. Sarah promises to do what
she can. With the help of Gleason and the blessing of her new
boss she sets out on the streets. This time it is old fashion
police works, asking the questions and hoping for a break. The
witchblade is not something that can help. Meanwhile there is a
short scene wherein some gangsters are invaded in their lair by
someone or something only seen in shadow. It is a plot for
another time. The main story again shows us more of the growing
partnership of Sarah and Gleason. Helpless to use her power to
help a friend  she must resort to other skills and her partner.
While this is not a typical issue it does help us know these
people better. Not every episode can be a victory or an action
packed thriller.

A FIRST ON FILM

Although "legacy" heroes are commonplace in comics and fiction,
the first one to make it onto film was Republic Picture's  1937
ZORRO RIDES AGAIN, featuring a descendent of the original Zorro
fighting crime in the old west.  If you want a "superhero"
version of this, the first would be in the 1943 serial of THE
PHANTOM serial in which Geoffrey Prescott plays the Phantom and
is killed, leaving it to his son Tom Tyler to take over the role
in Chapter One.
