This will be live on the internet, too. And archived on the net for a week, as well. The next installment of 'Nuff Said!, the Brigadoon of comic book radio shows, will be early Wednesday morning November 23rd (overnight on Tuesday the 22nd) from 3:30 AM to 6:00 AM eastern time. I again substitute for Susan Brown's overnight show, "Punk and Hardcore," but this time I'll be conducting a live interview the last hour with Patrick McDonnell, the creator. writer and artist of the syndicated comic strip Mutts and the Parents Magazine strip Bad Baby. We'll talk about the creative process and about babies, cats and dogs in general. Joining me will be former 'Nuff Said! co-host Mercy Van Vlack. For those of you in the listening area who won't be up that late, you can tape the radio using a vcr by simply connecting the input of your vcr to the output of your stereo. There is a more detailed description of this on our web site: http://www.comicbookradioshow.com/vcr.html. There is also software that enables you do record the live stream off your computer. It looks like my frequency of subbing for Susan is increasing. But, the WBAI web site (http://www.wbai.org) is now archiving ALL shows at www.archive.wbai.org. So you'll be able to listen to this show at your convenience, but only for a week then it'll be gone. And I'm sure they'll keep track of the hits each show gets so spread the word. Go to November 23 and click on "Punk and Hardcore" for 3:30 AM. I've been doing comic book-oriented radio shows since 1993, live-streamed over the internet for the past several years, usually interviewing a creator. I've covered all styles and all eras, pointing out the diversity of the art form to a radio audience who was often unaware of the versatility of sequential art. I used to be weekly, but since 2002 I have done frequent specials, fill-ins and guest stints, keeping the show alive (see http://www.comicbookradioshow.com/nsgl18.html for a recent list and links to the past Guest Lists). Many other WBAI producers, especially Susan Brown and Sidney Smith, have welcomed 'Nuff Said! segments on their shows and I can't thank them enough. Sidney will probably be playing something soon. I've been in many different time slots, especially on Tuesdays; check the web site. WBAI-FM, 99.5, is a 50,000 watt station broadcast from the Empire State Building. The signal usually gets out to New Haven, CT; Westhampton, L.I.; the Poconos of Pennsylvania, Orange County, NY and Trenton & Princeton, NJ, the recent signal or transmitter problems seem to have been fixed. But via the internet for an even greater distance, natch. WBAI-FM is a listener-supported Pacifica Network station. Bernard White, the program director, said on the air June of 2002, soon after the last regular episode, that 'Nuff Said! was not canceled, just put "on hiatus," but when he last brought out a new schedule 'Nuff Said! was absent from it. There are constant rumors that a new schedule is coming, but I'm not sure if anyone pays attention to them any more so perhaps that means they're more imminent. However, no new schedule has come out, so it can still be changed. Among his criticisms of comic books are that they are "narrow-focused" and only appeal to "middle-class white males." Even mainstream comics don't deserve those criticisms (except for "male") and nearly every African-American who works at the station is into comics and has told him so, sometimes on the air. It seems to fall on deaf ears. And yet, here I am still on the air talking to comic book creators and fans, now with a slightly more predictable schedule in the middle of the night. Check the web site often, especially on a Tuesday. One person e-mailed me to criticize this paragraph of my announcement. The situation has slightly changed, so this paragraph has slightly changed, too. And by way of optimism, during the past membership drive, he was on the air pitching with Will Eisner's latest work as the premium for that show and was engineering a show with Seth Tobacman of World War 3 Illustrated. Please spread the word about the show! Even if you're not in the area, you can still listen in via the net, live or otherwise. Thanks. Fannishly, Ken Gale, producer, interviewer and host http://www.comicbookradioshow.com _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- COMICS OBSCURA Mike Curtis shandafa@cyberback.com [COMICS OBSCURA are facts Mike Curtis has dug out during his 30 years of collecting Superman and writing about comics. His website for his comic imprint is www.shandafantasyarts.net ] THE WEEK THE WRITER LOST HIS MIND Actually, the cover feature on ADVENTURE COMICS #268, January 1960 is THE WEEK CLARK KENT LOST HIS MEMORY. But on reading it you truly wonder about the mental health of the unknown author. Mort Weisinger may have had it in for him, or ordered a 32 page story trimmed to the 12 that appear. But it is one of the most mind-boggling, complicated and cramjammed scripts ever to appear in the Silver Age of Comics. Since we cannot reprint it here, we will present it in PARAGRAPHARAMA- the process of telling the story in one long unbelievable sentence. The tale opens with a full page opener, showing a man pointing at Superboy flying a bunch of tanks on a platter like a military Big Boy sandwich, while Clark sighs and wishes he could be like Superboy. THE STORY: There's a fair in Smallville, and Lana mentions to Clark she is going to see the statue of Superboy there and when Clark looks with his supervision, he sees the statue is naked and stops to ties his shoe while Lana walks on and then he uses his super breath to suck the naked statue out the window and somehow it flies to Clark faster than the eye can see but not fast enough to melt the wax and he pulls off his real costume, puts it on the statue and throws it at the museum where it miraculously goes in and stands upright as Clark and Lana admire it, MEANWHILE some kid is feeding an ostrich rocks including some RED KRYPTONITE at the same time Clark sees some crooks stealing the statue with his suit and they comment that there are jewels hidden inside it and before they pulled off the suit but left the dummy as they merrily drive down the main highway with stiff Superboy visible to passerby in the back of the convertible (we're at the end of page 2 now) and they drive to a "deeply rutted road" and bust the naked statue while laying the costume in the dirt, and then Clark gets too close to the Ostrich of Doom and passes out (as the story breaks for a WHOLE panel explaining the history of red K) then somehow Clark falls into a cannon (!) and is shot into the air, past Smallville and the rest of the farmland of America, and then the United States coastline to land onto a passing ship and fall overboard the next morning while a bulldozer operator fails to see the brightly colored costume on the deeply rutted road (remember the road?) and plows it under while sharks attack Clark and he walks along the ocean bottom to come up on the shore and meet an Encyclopedia editor (!) who hears him talking Kryptonese and teaches him English in the course of one panel, then Clark reads about SUPERBOY and is interested, further taking his leave of the editor he has known for a page who says "I'll never forget you!" while Clark wanders to Pottsville (wherever that is) and takes part in a Baseball game, hitting the ball into the ground and knocking a hole in his bat during which time Ma and Pa Kent send out a Superboy robot to be seen since Clark is nowhere to be found, meanwhile back at the "Boy Stadium" Clark sees the Superboy robot roasting hotdogs for the team and yells for his hero then tries to leap into the air and somehow flies up to a dirigible towing a banner that says DRINK ZIPPY COLA and into the gondola via a convenient plot hole whereupon the narrator tells us there are counterfeiters with fake money running presses inside it and they give him $40 and some poisoned soda and then drop him out a trapdoor making him fly into the ocean and knock a piece of driftwood up into the balloon, deflating it and making it drop into the waiting arms of a police boat, at the same time, the Superboy robot stops the getaway car that was waiting but Clark is arrested as an accomplice and ends up in jail, using his x ray vision to learn of some prisoners who have stashed a Kryptonite meteor outside of town, thereupon getting the wrong idea that HE is a Superboy robot (he learned about them from the encyclopedia earlier) and then hears two cops discussing the rumors of an old tunnel under the jail and he makes his own, while the cops spot the hereto-unseen 6 foot hole in the ground outside the jail wall and announce they found the tunnel while Clark goes to the Old Mill and finds the kryptonite and learns it has no effect on him, confirming his suspicions that he is a robot, and like a wimp, he lays on his stomach and cries, at the same moment that KRYPTO sees him, and the Dog of Steel rams the meteor selflessly to get Clark out of the way, restoring his memory awhile Clark learns the meteor is FOOL'S KRYPTONITE and flies with his dog to find his uniform, freshly pressed and asphalted under a highway, whereupon he digs it up and dons it in full view of a nearby picnic (guess his superhearing wasn't working) but then learns it is a PICNIC FOR THE BLIND and he and Krypto and he serve the picnickers their food while the bus driver wakes up from his nap in time to miss everything THE END!!!!!! _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- [3] [TRIVIA CONTEST] Due to costs, customs regulations, and logistical difficulties: THIS CONTEST IS OPEN TO RESIDENTS OF THE CONTIGUOUS 48 U.S.STATES! His website for his comic imprint is www.shandafantasyarts.net ] THE PERILS OF CRIMEFIGHTING Will Eisner's THE SPIRIT was only put on film once (a TV Movie with FLASH GORDON star Sam Jones) but many think the Republic serial THE MASKED MARVEL was based on the character. However, the Marvel faced perils that might have been too much for the Spirit, especially in Chapter One. At the cliffhanger, the Marvel is thrown from the top of a tower in an old refinery, and as the dummy plummets to his apparent death, his arm catches in some beams and is ripped out by the roots! _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- [4] Network Buzz News, gossip and rumors from the industry Image Entertainment and Dark Horse Indie Announce Slate of Films in Production; Image and Dark Horse Co-Producing 7 Films for Theatrical and Home Video Distribution CHATSWORTH, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)----Image Entertainment, Inc. Photos of the Zoom Suit and Nightmare Armor's Master Chief Armor can be seen at http://www.superverse.com/OnTheNews/ZoomArmour.php. The creation of the Zoom Suit took master sculptor Sid Garrand and six artists and craftsmen approximately ninety days. The complexity and high tech aspect of the costume, such as the moving parts and numerous lights, made the task even more challenging. "I think it's exciting and very original," said Garrand. "We're excited to deliver the best armored Zoom Suit possible. We came up with some very cool concepts for the costume. The suit has chrome plating on numerous parts, candy apple green and blue automotive painted parts and green LEDs to match the alien glow featured in the comic and animation. It's awesome and we're thrilled to be the group chosen to bring the Zoom Suit to life. We received a tremendous amount of attention from our work with Microsoft and expect a similar reaction to the Zoom Suit. This project is by far the highest quality of work we've ever done." The award-winning animated short Zoom Suit, created by John Taddeo, can be seen online at www.superverse.com. The Zoom Suit comic book will be solicited in the February edition of Previews for items shipping in April 2006. "I saw the Master Chief Armor at MegaCon last year and knew instantly that Nightmare Armor Studios were the guys for this job," said Zoom Suit writer and director John Taddeo. "This is a work of art. Sid and the guys did a great job. We'll be bringing Zoom with us to MegaCon 2006, so stop by for a photo." About Nightmare Armor Studios The Nightmare Armor creative team consists of sculptors, artists and mold specialists. They offer the creation of anything you can imagine. The team has created costumes for video game, cartoon and comic characters. Their designs have been showcased the world over and featured at trade shows in Europe, Canada, Japan and the United States.
