TO DO: Shanower to speak on Trojan War 11/16 Eric Shanower, whose AGE OF BRONZE is one of the most amazing comics being publisher, will be talking about the Trojan War at the University of Cinncinati on November 16, at 7 pm. In words and pictures he will demonstrate how he uses both the literary and archaeological traditions to create a new version of the story for today's readers. The continuing graphic novel series, Age of Bronze, encompasses the complete story of the Trojan War, from the abduction of Helen, the most beautiful woman in the world, through the fall of Troy when the Greeks used the Wooden Horse to gain entrance to the city. Age of Bronze began publication in 1998 from by Image Comics, Inc. Since then Shanower has won major comic book industry awards for Age of Bronze, including the Eisner Award for Best Writer/Artist in both 2001 and 2003. The second volume of the series, Age of Bronze: Sacrifice, was selected as one of the Best Books of 2004 by the editors of Publishers Weekly. The earliest versions of the Trojan War story are The Iliad and The Odyssey composed by Homer in the 8th century BCE. These two epic poems form the foundation of Western literature and have been famous for centuries around the world. Many of the greatest writers and artists down the years have used Trojan War themes and episodes in their work, fleshing out the story, adding new characters and events, and retelling the ancient story in new ways. These include the Roman poet Virgil, Chaucer, Shakespeare, James Joyce, Eugene O'Neill, among many others. Shanower is drawing upon all these sources for Age of Bronze to present what he hopes is a definitive version of the Trojan War story. In addition to written and artistic sources, Shanower also delves into the archaeology of Late Bronze Age Greece and the surrounding areas. Of particular interest is the ancient city of Troy itself. The University of Cincinnati is the US partner in the international Troy Project, the excavations that began in 1988 at the site of historic Troy in northwest Turkey. Says Shanower, "I'm glad and grateful for this opportunity to come to Cincinnati and meet the people who have been actually digging at Troy, recovering the history. It's very exciting." Eric Shanower will be speaking about Troy and Age of Bronze on Wednesday, November 16, at 7 pm in Blegen Library 308 at the University of Cincinnati in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Blegen Library is off Clifton Ave. at the corner of Straight St. by the main entrance to campus. The general public is welcome. There is no charge. +++++ From the Comics Continuum at http://www.comicscontinuum.com/: WIZARD WORLD TEXAS: ASPEN PANEL ARLINGTON, Texas -- Michael Turner said the Fathom live-action movie continues to be as close as it has to becoming a reality at 20th Century Fox. "The latest script is at Fox and hopefully we'll know in a couple of weeks," Turner said Saturday at the Aspen Comics panel at Wizard World Texas. "It's kind of wait-and-find-out on how the script is taken by Fox." The current script, which Turner described as "a prequel to the comic," is by Sean O'Keefe and Will Staples, who also wrote the upcoming King Tut. "They read the Fathom books," Aspen's Frank Mastromauro said. "These guys really get it. Aspen recently signed a deal with CAA, and Turner said he wants the company to gradually grow into movies, animation and video games. The collection, valued in the millions, includes original animation art from Bluth and Goldman's 30-year creative partnership, including art from the well-known animated classics "The Secret of N.I.M.H." (1982), "An American Tail" (1986) and "All Dogs Go To Heaven (1989)," and their classic video games "Dragon's Lair" (1983) and "Space Ace" (1983). "Don Bluth and Gary Goldman are icons in the animation world," said SCAD Dean of the School of Film and Digital Media Peter Weishar. "This collection will enhance academic studies and understanding and inspire new creative endeavors for the more than 1,750 students in the School of Film and Digital Media. Students studying animation, broadcast design, cinema studies, interactive design and game development, and other disciplines will benefit from this magnificent gift. We are very fortunate and grateful to Don Bluth and Gary Goldman." The Savannah College of Art and Design's reputation and growth in the School of Film and Digital Media led Bluth and Goldman to donate the collection to the college. "We are very familiar with SCAD's recent accomplishments in the field of animation and their large animation student population," said Goldman. "We felt that having access to our archive of animation art would be of value to SCAD animation students and faculty." Goldman went on to say that he and Bluth felt that students would benefit from studying the collection whether seeking a career in traditional or computer-generated animation. "A thorough knowledge of traditional or classical animation and its history will help teach new artists in the field of animation," he said. "Having access to the original art for storyboarding, character and FX animation, layout and background painting, will enable the students to see the analyzation and research involved to bring animated characters and environmental phenomena to life." Spanning 50 years, Bluth's illustrious career includes work with studio giants such as Walt Disney Productions and 20th Century Fox Film Corporation. Bluth has distributed his independent films through MGM/UA, Universal Pictures, Warner Bros and The Samuel Goldwyn Company all produced at his own studio, Don Bluth Entertainment. Originally an English literature major at Brigham Young University, Bluth auspiciously began his career in 1955 as an assistant animator to John Lounsbery on Walt Disney's "Sleeping Beauty" (1959). Bluth has worked in all categories of traditional animation, from mixing colors for ink and paint to writing scripts, directing scenes and even composing songs. His career took off at Disney, where he served as an animator for "Robin Hood" (1973), directing animator for "Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too" (1974) and "The Rescuers" (1976), director of animation for "Pete's Dragon" (1977), and producer and director for "The Small One" (1978). Bluth's name came to the public's attention in 1979 when he resigned his position at Walt Disney Productions along with long- time partners and fellow animators Goldman and John Pomeroy to start Don Bluth Productions. Since that time, Bluth has written, directed, produced and designed characters and environments for 12 films, one featurette, the two-minute animated sequence in the film "Xanadu," and three laser disc video games. Along with "The Secret of N.I.M.H.," "An American Tail" and "All Dogs Go To Heaven," his noteworthy films include "The Land Before Time" (1988) and "Thumbelina" (1994). Working with Fox Animation Studios, Bluth also created "Anastasia" (1997), "Bartok the Magnificent" (1999) and "Titan A.E." (2000). His video games include the well- known "Dragon's Lair" (1983), "Space Ace" (1983) and "Dragon's Lair II: A Time Warp" (1989). Bluth's partner, Goldman began his career in 1972 on the animated motion picture "Robin Hood" as a rough assistant animator to supervising animator Frank Thomas. Goldman's career continued as an animator on Disney's "Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too" (1974) and "The Rescuers" (1976), and as directing animator on "Pete's Dragon" (1977) and "The Small One" (1978). Goldman worked as a directing animator, producer, co-director and supervised post-production on all of their independent films including "The Secret of N.I.M.H.," "Dragon's Lair," "Space Ace," "An American Tail," "Dragon's Lair II: A Time Warp," "The Land Before Time," "All Dogs Go To Heaven," "Thumbelina," "Anastasia," "Bartok the Magnificent" and "Titan A.E." Goldman's last three films were produced in Phoenix, Ariz., for Fox Animation Studios, which Goldman co-helmed the establishment of in 1994 at the invitation of 20th Century Fox executives Bill Mechanic and Peter Chernin. The collection is currently being assessed and cataloged and permanent plans for the collection will be announced. On Saturday, Nov. 5, 7 p.m. SCAD will honor Bluth and Goldman at the Savannah Film Festival with a Lifetime Achievement Award in Animation. +++++ From ComiX-Fan at http://www.comixfan.com/xfan SONY CONFIRMS CHURCH AS SANDMAN FOR SPIDER-MAN 3 Sony Pictures has put an end to months of speculation as to just which villain actor Thomas Haden Church will be portraying in Spider-Man 3 by posting the first image of the actor from the film on the Official Spider-Man Movie Site. Meltzer, who also followed Kevin Smith with a popular run on DC's Green Arrow, is a best-selling novelist (The Tenth Justice, The First Counsel, The Zero Game) with a real flair for creating Washington DC-based governmental thrillers and the co-creator of the critically acclaimed Jack & Bobby TV series. Although the nature of Meltzer's next DC project remains unclear, his agreement with DC is further indication of the comic book industry's increasing ability to attract highly talented writers from other media (see "Marvel Announces Three Projects With Best- Selling Authors"). Meltzer's Identity Crisis was not only a hit in the direct market -- the collected version has also been one of the top-selling superhero graphic novels in bookstores in 2005. DC also announced that Meltzer, along with DC superstar Jim Lee will be Guests of Honor at the inaugural New York ComicCon in February 2006. Pantheon Graphic Novel Based on a Movie Of Philip K. Dick's 'A Scanner Darkly' November 09, 2005 Pantheon has announced a graphic novel composed entirely of stills from the forthcoming animated motion picture based on A Scanner Darkly, Philip K. Dick's haunting novel of addiction and corporate corruption set in Orange County in a drug-addled near future. Innovative filmmaker Richard Linklater (Slackers) has written and directed the film, which stars Keanu Reeves, Robert Downey, Jr., Woody Harrelson, and Winona Ryder, and which utilizes live action photography overlaid with an advanced animation process known as "interpolated rotoscoping." The result is a visually striking film, which Pantheon has turned into an equally striking, fumetti-like graphic novel with dialogue by the American Splendor creative team -- Harvey Pekar, and Laura and Gary Dumm. Philip K. Dick, who died in 1982, is clearly one of the finest science fiction writers of the 20th Century. His novels and short stories have also formed the basis for a number of extremely interesting films including the genre-defining Bladerunner (1982), Total Recall (1990), and Minority Report (2002). Linklater's film of A Scanner Darkly is slated for release by Warner Independent Films in March of 2006. Vintage Books is reissuing A Scanner Darkly (Dick's best-selling novel) in February simultaneously with Pantheon's publication of the full-color A Scanner Darkly graphic novel (cover price: $15.95). +++++ From The SCOOP! at http://scoop.diamondgalleries.com/ Toronto Comicon Gets New Guest of Honor Industry News, Scoop, Friday, November 11, 2005 Due to increased work commitments, Stan Lee will be unable to attend the April 28-30 2006 Paradise Comics Toronto Comicon, where he was slated to appear as the Guest of Honor.
