He is a long-time fan of comics and the electronic media; having been the moderator of BBS comics forums on WME, FIDONET and the Comic Book Network. David's favorite motivational phrase is: BEHOLD THE TURTLE, HE ONLY MAKES PROGRESS WHEN HE STICKS HIS NECK OUT! TOP COW COMICS WWW.TOPCOW.COM LARA CROFT TOMB RAIDER vs. THE WOLF-MEN "MONSTER WAR" #2 of 4 32 pages, full color, $2.99/$4.60CAN Writers - Christopher Golden & Tom Sniegoski Penciler - Joyce Chin Colorist - Scott Kester Lettering - Troy Peteri WITCHBLADE vs. FRANKENSTEIN "MONSTER WAR" #3 of 4 32 pages, full color, $2.99/$4.60CAN Writers - Christopher Golden & Tom Sniegoski Penciler - Vitor Ishimura Colorist - Scott Kester Lettering - Troy Peteri This is a Top Cow crossover pitting their main title heroes against the classic monsters of literature. Mr. Hyde has resurrected the vampire Dracula and Magdelena is bound by duty to try and correct that before Vlad spreads his evil in the world. However she is bitten by him but escapes. Lara Croft, Tombraider, had hoped to prevent the resurrection but now she is faced with a once hoped for ally turning to the other side. She had also discovered Frankenstein's monster frozen in the Arctic but he too is roaming the world. Her ally now is Dr. Jekyll. It seems he is not an alter ego of Hyde but the good half split as another being from the bad. It is the evil Hyde's scheme to perfect a serum to plague all humanity so the evil will split from the good and of course the evil, being more vicious, will eventually be in control. This is a fast paced story with lots of action. At time you have the major Top Cow characters take the spotlight but their good efforts are being thwarted at every turn. The Frankenstein monster battles Witchblade to a draw while Dracula builds an army of vampires for his own ends. Lara Croft has to retrieve a magical flower being guarded by werewolves to cure Magdelena who is uncontrollably being drawn to Dracula as her condition worsens. The suspense builds with each page in this well crafted tale from Christopher Golden. The art teams handle the multiple characters well and set the mood perfectly for a variety of settings. I am not a fan of monsters for monsters sake, particularly when a whole bunch are used for what seems on the surface as a gimmick. This is enjoyable on its own merits and worth waiting for the last part to see how it is resolved. THE DARKNESS #21 32 pages, full color, $2.99/$4.60 Writer - Brian Buccellato Pencils - Francis Manapul Inks - Kevin Conrad, Jay Leisten, & Rob Hunter Colors - Brian Buccellato Lettering - Troy Peteri Jackie is a great character if handled properly. He is a gangster who took control with the power he has gained over "the Darkness". All these evil creatures are trapped inside him just waiting to kill, usually without discrimination. He has found it useful in dealing with characters of all types. But he is seeking escape from their constant whispering in his mind to be released. So he goes on vacation to the opposite extreme - Alaska, land of the midnight sun. What he does not expect is to confront another who senses evil and has made it a quest to wipe out by way of serial murder. The confrontation is a problem for Jackie as the Darkness cannot emerge in the constant full daylight. His only hope is to trap his predator in the dark somehow or he will be killed himself. This is a great story that makes us wonder which is the greater evil. Jackie is a hood who kills for his own means or sometimes to help others. Jared seeks to end the life of others he can sense are criminals and killers. Only in the end do we find a deeper secret in his motives. The supporting charactes are all new for this story. Buccellato does a good job of developing them to advance the story as well as add lighter moments here and there, which is needed in such otherwise dark material. I really like the art team on this issue - especially Buccelleto's coloring. I don't really care if Jackie transforms into the armored and clawed embodiment of the Darkness during battle as the concept is more meaningful to me. However, the rendering of his battle mode in this issue is superb. It is not a "usual" episode of this title but it is a good jump on point that will impress the first time reader. THE DARKNESS #22 32 pages, full color, $2.99/$4.60 Writer - David Wohl Pencils - Martin Montiel Inks - Jay Leisten Colors - Sonia Oback Lettering - Troy Peteri Cover - Dale Keown This issue gets right back into the mythos surrounding Jackie Estacado and the Darkness. The opening sequence show the destruction of the former home of the man Jackie took down to gain power over his mob, Don Frankie Franchetti. The destruction is caused by the arrival of the Angelus, a typical Top Cow babe with a big chest, skimpy armor that barely covers the good stuff but is heavy on the arms and shoulders and, oh yeah, large white wings and huge horns. She possesses the nice body of the former Mrs. Franchetti. Of course she is out to get Jackie. Meanwhile another group of supernatural beings are setting a trap for Jackie at a friend's house. These guys may well be too much for the creatures of the Darkness to take care of because of the light he emits. This could be too much for our favorite mobster. This could be a little bit discouraging for the new reader of this title, especially if you want to know more about these new beings out to get Jackie. I do not know their backstory either but found it did not detract from following the current story or the action. As always the art on this title is well done and it needs to be for the amount of detail needed to make it work. As an added treat the cover is done by Dale Keown (memories of THE PITT still linger.) This is part one of three so we may soon find out the significance of the title, "ALL IN THE FAMILY" though one might guess all the supernatural stuff eventually would be connected. Good writing and great art always makes for happy readers. THE DARKNESS VAMPIRELLA #1 32 pages, full color, $2.99/$4.60CAN Writer - Terry Moore Penciler - Eric Basadua Inker - Jay Leisten Colorer - Tyson Wengler Letterer - Troy Peteri What better sexy female supernatural character could team up with Jackie Estacado than Vampirella? And what a treat to have none other than Terry (STRANGERS IN PARADISE MOORE) telling the story. She is hunting a symbiotic vampire who has just broken out of jail. He takes over other bodies. But now the Magdelena is after him and so Vampirella seeks the one he would take over to be able to defeat Magdelena - the one with the power of the Darkness, our pal Jackie. The first meeting is fun as Jackie senses Vampirella following him and gets the drop on her. She bites him to his surprise but she says she would not drink his blood because he "tastes like hell!" She fills him n on the other guy but he is not looking to team up. The story progresses until a showdown with all three occurs in a strip joint. The attack scenes are particularly gory in this special. Vampi is draw as good as I have ever seen, that costume has always been the best. Terry gives some nice insight into her thoughts about her life and how Jackie feels about his fate. That is part of what makes such a comic successful. There may be those who just want the sex and blood and gore but many readers want more than that and Terry delivers on this one. Great value at the price! _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- [13] New Comic Book Releases List [NCRL] by Charles LePage chuck@comiclist.com http://www.comiclist.com New Comic Book Releases List for Wednesday, 11/16/2005, compiled by Charles LePage with information from Suncoast Comics.
