Normally I point out holidays and special events but in the past few weeks I skimmed over Veteran's Day and the change to Standard Time and I think Halloween too (it's all a blur). So let's get back on track. Next Thursday is Thanksgiving here in the good old USA. For our International readers you may or may not celebrate a day of thanks some other time of the year. This is one of our oldest holidays going back to the time of George Washington. Like most it has evolved over the years to include more than originally intended. First I would hope that we all at least pause and recognize the good things in our lives. My mom always cautioned me to count my blessings, as did the nuns at Sacred Heart School, God bless 'em. It is hard when things are not going your way, or one major thing is constantly bringing you down to remember how many good things you have be it loved ones, a good job, a hobby you love, a talent others lack and so on. So take the time to think of all those things that one day, and if you are inclined, give thanks to your greater power. Then thank those around you for all they do, even if it is just being your friend. After that there is plenty of time left for trips to grandma's, turkey and all the trimmings and of course, football. Friday will come soon enough and we all know what that means - Christmas Shopping! At That's Entertainment, Thanksgiving is one of only two days the store is closed. The day after, Black Friday, as it now called (because retailers make so much on that day they go into the black for the year or some such thing) is usually a very busy day. Start now to think about going to your local store and stock up on those gifts for Christmas. And of course get some new comics this week to read on those days off next week. Like some of these . . . Perhaps you will share it with those you care for, and help them count their blessings. I am Thankful! FOR THE WIFE WHO SAYS IT'S HOT DOGS TONIGHT, BECAUSE SHE IS HOME WITH ME, AND NOT OUT WITH SOMEONE ELSE. FOR THE HUSBAND WHO IS ON THE SOFA BEING A COUCH POTATO, BECAUSE HE IS HOME WITH ME AND NOT OUT AT THE BARS. FOR THE TEENAGER WHO IS COMPLAINING ABOUT DOING DISHES BECAUSE IT MEANS SHE IS AT HOME, NOT ON THE STREETS. FOR THE TAXES I PAY BECAUSE IT MEANS I AM EMPLOYED. FOR THE MESS TO CLEAN AFTER A PARTY BECAUSE IT MEANS I HAVE BEEN SURROUNDED BY FRIENDS. FOR THE CLOTHES THAT FIT A LITTLE TOO SNUG BECAUSE IT MEANS I HAVE ENOUGH TO EAT. FOR MY SHADOW THAT WATCHES ME WORK BECAUSE IT MEANS I AM OUT IN THE SUNSHINE FOR A LAWN THAT NEEDS MOWING, WINDOWS THAT NEED CLEANING, AND GUTTERS THAT NEED FIXING BECAUSE IT MEANS I HAVE A HOME. FOR ALL THE COMPLAINING I HEAR ABOUT THE GOVERNMENT BECAUSE IT MEANS WE HAVE FREEDOM OF SPEECH.. FOR THE PARKING SPOT I FIND AT THE FAR END OF THE PARKING LOT BECAUSE IT MEANS I AM CAPABLE OF WALKING AND I HAVE BEEN BLESSED WITH TRANSPORTATION. FOR MY HUGE HEATING BILL BECAUSE IT MEANS I AM WARM. FOR THE LADY BEHIND ME IN CHURCH WHO SINGS OFF KEY BECAUSE IT MEANS I CAN HEAR. FOR THE PILE OF LAUNDRY AND IRONING BECAUSE IT MEANS I HAVE CLOTHES TO WEAR. FOR WEARINESS AND ACHING MUSCLES AT THE END OF THE DAY BECAUSE IT MEANS I HAVE BEEN CAPABLE OF WORKING HARD. FOR THE ALARM THAT GOES OFF IN THE EARLY MORNING HOURS BECAUSE IT MEANS I AM ALIVE ANOTHER DAY. AND FINALLY, FOR TOO MUCH E-MAIL BECAUSE IT MEANS I HAVE FRIENDS WHO ARE THINKING OF ME. Keep up the good work. Matthew +++++ From: "Ken Gale" nuffsaid@riseup.net Subject: re: Mutts comic strip radio & internet show Wednesday morning! Date: Thu, 17 Nov 2005 16:56:18 -0500 Hi, folks, Please post and forward to appropriate chat rooms, web pages and e-lists! This will be live on the internet, too. And archived on the net for a week, as well. The next installment of 'Nuff Said!, the Brigadoon of comic book radio shows, will be early this Wednesday morning November 23rd (overnight on Tuesday the 22nd) from 3:30 AM to 6:00 AM eastern time. I again substitute for Susan Brown's overnight show, "Punk and Hardcore," but this time I'll be conducting a live interview the last hour with Patrick McDonnell, the creator. writer and artist of the syndicated comic strip Mutts and the Parents Magazine strip Bad Baby. We'll talk about the creative process and about babies, cats and dogs in general. Joining me will be former 'Nuff Said! co-host Mercy Van Vlack. For those of you in the listening area who won't be up that late, you can tape the radio using a vcr by simply connecting the input of your vcr to the output of your stereo. There is a more detailed description of this on our web site: http://www.comicbookradioshow.com/vcr.html. There is also software that enables you do record the live stream off your computer; check with your local computer store/expert. It looks like my frequency of subbing for Susan is increasing. The WBAI web site (http://www.wbai.org) is now archiving ALL shows at www.archive.wbai.org. So you'll be able to listen to this show at your convenience, but only for a week then it'll be gone. And I'm sure they'll keep track of the hits each show gets so spread the word. Go to November 23 and click on "Punk and Hardcore" for 3:30 AM. I've been doing comic book-oriented radio shows since 1993, live-streamed over the internet for the past several years, usually interviewing a creator. I've covered all styles and all eras, pointing out the diversity of the art form to a radio audience who was often unaware of the versatility of sequential art. I used to be weekly, but since 2002 I have done frequent specials, fill-ins and guest stints, keeping the show alive (see http://www.comicbookradioshow.com/nsgl18.html for a recent list and links to the past Guest Lists). Many other WBAI producers, especially Susan Brown and Sidney Smith, have welcomed 'Nuff Said! segments on their shows and I can't thank them enough. Sidney will probably be playing something soon. I've been in many different time slots, especially on Tuesdays; check the web site. WBAI-FM, 99.5, is a 50,000 watt station broadcast from the Empire State Building. The signal usually gets out to New Haven, CT; Westhampton, L.I.; the Poconos of Pennsylvania, Orange County, NY and Trenton & Princeton, NJ. But via the internet for an even greater distance, natch. WBAI-FM is a listener-supported Pacifica Network station. Bernard White, the program director, said on the air June of 2002, soon after the last regular episode, that 'Nuff Said! was not canceled, just put "on hiatus," but when he last brought out a new schedule 'Nuff Said! was absent from it. There are constant rumors that a new schedule is coming, but I'm not sure if anyone pays attention to the rumors any more so perhaps that means they're more imminent. However, no new schedule has come out, so it can still be changed. Among his criticisms of comic books are that they are "narrow-focused" and only appeal to "middle-class white males." Even mainstream comics don't deserve those criticisms (except for "male") and nearly every African- American who works at the station is into comics and has told him so, sometimes on the air. It seems to fall on deaf ears. And yet, here I am still on the air talking to comic book creators and fans, now with a slightly more predictable schedule in the middle of the night. Check the web site often, especially on a Tuesday. One person e-mailed me to criticize this paragraph of my announcement. The situation has slightly changed, so this paragraph has slightly changed, too. And by way of optimism, during the past membership drive, Bernard was on the air pitching with Will Eisner's latest work as the premium for that show and was engineering a show with Seth Tobacman of World War 3 Illustrated. Please spread the word about the show! Even if you're not in the area, you can still listen in via the net, live or otherwise. Thanks. San Diego, California (November 14, 2005) - Alias Comics' series, OZF5: GALE FORCE, gained notable mention in the November issue of Nickelodeon magazine! This month's recent issue of Nickelodeon features a special story on THE WIZARD OF OZ, and all of its many incarnations. Among them you'll find Alias' series, OZF5: GALE FORCE - an all-new, all-ages story of Oz, as Dorothy Gale returns to Oz, armed with a water gun, to join her friends, a master of Wing Chun Kung Fu Scarecrow, a kilt-wearing Celtic-Warrior King of the Beasts Lion, and an axe wielding Tin Man War Machine who is composed of various automobile parts that have been dropped into Oz by whirlwinds! With the ferocity of an F5 tornado, Dorothy and crew face Rocket- powered Flying Monkeys, marauding Winkie War Machines, and the West Witch's murderous crows and wicked wolves as they attempt to free the strange Land of Oz from the Witch's wicked reign. "I am thrilled to see OZF5 mentioned in Nickelodeon Magazine. It gives the book much wider exposure to a portion of the audience that it is tailor made for," said writer/creator, Ramon Madrigal. "To be mentioned along such well-known representations as the Broadway musical in a magazine of Nickelodeon's caliber is a comic book creator's dream. Kids should be able to enjoy comics as much as adults, and if OZF5 can have as many younger readers who enjoy the book as adult readers then I'll be happy." OZF5: GALE FORCE, by Ramon Madrigal and Ryan Ottley (INVINCIBLE), debuted at Alias Comics in August, being met with great reviews. "Odd but satisfying ... it certainly played by its own rules ...If you want a fun, not-too-serious Oz read, go for it." - The Wonderful Blog of Oz. "I loved this comic so much that I want to give it a 10+ if that was possible and I hope that we will see more books from the team like this." - The Comics Review. For more information on OZF5: GALE FORCE and other Alias titles, please visit your local comic book shop, or simply visit Alias online at http://www.aliasenterprises.com ! +++++ Big Apple National Expo, Nov 18-19-20 One of the greatest assemblages of comic book talent, a famous intergalactic princess, three boys from Hogwarts School for Wizards, a star pilot, a Sith lord, a rock & roll primate and more are coming to New York City on November 18, 19, and 20.
