Omega Will Be Unknown No Longer With Classic TPB, Upcoming Mini-
Series

Before you get blown away by Jonathan Lethem's new
Omega: The Unknown series due out next year, check out Omega: The
Unknown Classic TPB collecting the hero's short-lived career.

"These early Omega: The Unknown stories by Steve
Gerber, Mary Skrenes and Jim Mooney formed an emotional
touchstone for a young Jonathan Lethem, one that stayed with him
his entire life," says Tom Brevoort, editor of the upcoming
Omega: The Unknown series.   "Now, he's going to be coming full
circle, discharging that inspirational debt by presenting his own
interpretation of this obscure Marvel character."

Omega's beginning is filled with demons, depowerment,
and drama and it just may consume the Defenders.

In his short time as a hero, Omega: The Unknown
battled obscure and infamous villains, with one super-villain
even losing his own life in a battle with the hero.  And for
once, this villain has stayed dead.  You'll even witness the
incredible origin of this short-lived superstar.

            There's even a Spider-Man guest appearance, but it's
not quite how you would expect it to be.

Beat the crowd and check out the beginning of Omega
in Omega: The Unknown Classic TPB featuring issues 1-10 of his
series and his two appearances in Defenders 76 and 77 before his
high-profile mini-series later in 2006.

What If? Classic Vol.2 Celebrates Second Annual What If? Month

For all those clamoring for What If? tales, Marvel is
releasing What If? Classic Vol.2 TPB continuing the run of
classic What If? Tales started last year in What If? Classic
Vol.1.

What If? Classic Vol.2 TPB features stories by Jack
Kirby, Sal Buscema, Alan Kupperberg and others, and even features
a story by Jack "King" Kirby where he wrote in himself and 3
other legends as the Fantastic Four.

Some of the other mind-bending stories include: What
if someone else had become the Hulk instead of Bruce Banner?,
What if the identity of Thor had been passed down to a girl?,
What if Daredevil's secret was exposed?, and What if there was
more than one Spider-Man?

These stories challenged the way comic readers would
read comics and made it fun to imagine "what if?"  What If?
Classic Vol.2 TPB collects the original What If? issues 7-12.

And the annual tradition of What If? continues this December with
an entire fifth week event of What If? books.  The festivities
kick off with What If: Captain America as we see what would have
happened if Captain America existed during the Civil War.

Pak Begins Planet Hulk in Incredible Hulk #92

"Planet Hulk," the biggest Hulk event in the Jade
Giant's history, is set to begin in Incredible Hulk #92 and Greg
Pak, writer of the acclaimed Phoenix: Endsong and member of
Marvel's Ten Terrific, is taking the Hulk there.  Along with
artist Carlo Pagulayan, Pak is set to bring the Hulk on the most
incredible ride of his life leading up to the milestone issue
Incredible Hulk #100.

"Most of the great Marvel characters are misfits-that's the
classic Marvel twist which makes these heroes so compellingly
human," says Ten Terrific writer Greg Pak. "But the Hulk may be
the greatest misfit of all-he has the heart of a hero, but in the
eyes of puny humans, his incredible anger and power make him the
planet's most terrifying monster."

"Planet Hulk" will find the Hulk completely out of his
element, stranded on a distant world with inhabitants just as
powerful as he is.  So is it possible for the Hulk to survive
this harsh planet? And possibly even thrive there?
"Planet Hulk' thrusts the Hulk into a savage world in which
a corrupt empire uses the spectacle of bloody gladiatorial combat
to distract its citizens, discipline its slaves, and dispose of
its enemies," says Pak.  "In a world in which might makes right
and he who wins in the arena has the chance to influence
thousands, what path will the Hulk take?  Will the monster become
a hero?  Or will he become the worst tyrant the universe has ever
seen?"
"I'm hugely excited about the story," reveals Pak.  "It
combines a fun science fiction premise with a great character
arc.  And we've got monsters and robots, swords and spaceships, a
corrupt emperor and a fierce woman warrior, bug people, Shadow
Walkers, and the Hulk at his angriest and most vulnerable and
most lethal on the precipice of huge decisions and new
directions.  And to top it off, Carlo Pagulayan is penciling.
He's a superstar in the making and his Hulk is going to blow
people's minds."

A whole new world means a whole new supporting cast
for the Hulk, including new enemies, new powerful alien races,
and possibly even a new love interest.

"I think this story is going to become one of the
most definitive Hulk arcs in years," says editor Mark Paniccia.
"We're looking into the heart of the monster side of Bruce
Banner. What will we find? You're going to be shocked...and moved.
And we promise there's going to be lots of action in this series.
It's going to make your head spin!"

Pak and Pagulayan are sure to bring new meaning to
the the words Hulk Smash as Planet Hulk sees Bruce Banner's alter
ego fighting to survive on a hostile alien world.  But just how
will this effect the Hulk for years to come?  Find out in
Incredible Hulk #92 as the epic "Planet Hulk" begins.

New Excalibur Take on the Old X-Men in New Excalibur #2

A series of strange coincidences, including the near-
death of Dazzler, has brought a new team of Excalibur together.
But will they mesh as a unit in enough time to take down the
original five X-Men with murder on their mind in the pages of New
Excalibur #2?

Both critics and fans have floored by the incredible first issue
of New Excalibur.

Hilary Goldstein of IGN.com says, "This is an excellent read and
one of the week's best."

Comicfanatic.com says, "While not officially a team yet,
Claremont's New Excalibur already has that unique team dynamic
that works. I can't put it into words, but this issue gave me a
good feeling. The feeling that told me...this is going to be good!"

Featuring an eclectic line-up of Captain Britain,
Nocturne, Dazzler, Pete Wisdom, and Juggernaut, New Excalibur is
once again England's premiere super-hero team.  So why are the
original X-Men outfitted in leather and trying to kill them?
"The five original X-Men are five of the most powerful mutants
who ever lived," says editor Mike Marts.  "Who are these five
leather-clad copies strutting around England?  And is that
Professor Xavier standing up on the last page of New Excalibur
#1?  You're going to have to read and find out.  Needless to say,
Captain Britain and friends are going to have their hands full."
After the shocking first issue where the original X-Men nearly
succeeded in killing Dazzler, the New Excalibur are going to have
to learn to trust each other or these murderous Children of the
Atom are going to rip them to shreds.

Don't miss New Excalibur #2 as Decimation continues to spread
throughout the X-Universe.

What If: Wolverine Sees Logan Take on the Chicago Mob

Continuing December's What If month, What If: Wolverine shows us
a universe where Logan leaves the Canadian Wilderness, not to
become an X-Man or a member of Alpha Flight, but to take on the
mob of the Windy City, Chicago.

Logan has sought solace in the trappings of a rowdy river town in
the Canadian wilderness, but a tragedy forces him to seek revenge
in Chicago. Will this crusade stop him from becoming Wolverine or
does he have a greater destiny ahead of him?

All these questions and more are answered in this tale of
vengeance by the creative team of Ten Terrific writer Daniel Way
and penciler Jon Proctor.

Traditionally, each What If? tale took place in its own
universe.  But for the first time, this year's 6 What If? one-
shots will all take place in the same universe: the newly
introduced Earth 717.

Be sure to collect all of this year's What If stories featuring
Captain America, The Fantastic Four, Thor, Daredevil, and the
Sub-Mariner.

The meeting DC doesn't want you to know about!

DC is holding their first RRP (Retailer Roundtable Program) in
three years right now in Montreal. Chuck Rozanski wrote about the
last one, in 2002, here. Basically a select group of retailers
are being shown upcoming projects and given a lot of goodies, as
well as a chance to meet with many top DC marketing and creative
folks. The last time, Warren Ellis was a guest, believe it or
not.

The last RRP was a somewhat open affair, with information being
handed out to the media for embargo. This one is locked up
tighter than Katie Holmes' pre-nup. Given the intense speculation
over the post-Crisis DCU it's understandable and necessary. But
loose lips being what they are, we're sure plenty of info will be
dribbling out in the weeks to come.

DC NEWS FROM THE RRP MEETING

Sunday, a select group of comic retailers made their way home
from the Great White North as DC's RRP meeting wrapped up in
Montreal. The weekend held a handful of presentations from DC's
various imprints and divisions, and while mostly focusing on
information for retailers, many editorial announcements regarding
upcoming projects were made.

While many of the announcements and talking points re-iterated
news from this summer's convention season, a few new tidbits and
announcements were thrown in for spice.

In no particular order:

(edited) As announced at Chicago, Dynamite's Red Sonja will cross
over with (and revive) DC's Claw character, and the two will be
in a four issue miniseries published under the Wildstorm banner.
Jim Lee will provide all four covers, with variant covers by
others artists (Alex Ross will provide the alternate cover to
issue #1), which will kick off Wildstorm's sword and sorcery line
(to be called "Storm & Sorcery") and a new Claw series.

While he's he'll be meeting many heroes of the Wildstorm Universe
throughout the Captain Atom: Armageddon miniseries, his meeting
with The Authority in issue #5 will lead to a "big event." The
returning Wildstorm titles were again mentioned: Wildcats by
Grant Morrison and Jim Lee; Gen13 by Gail Simone and Talent
Caldwell; and Wetworks by Mike Carey and Whilce Portacio. No
specific dates for the three series' launches were mentioned.

What appears to be the final Alan Moore/Kevin O'Neil League of
Extraordinary Gentlemen project to come from Wildstorm, The Black
Dossier will be a hardcover which will include many formats,
including a 3D segment.

Chris Sprouse will step in for a two issue fill-in on Ex Machina,
spelling off regular series artist Tony Harris sometime after
issue #20.

Each issue of 52* will contain 20 pages of stories with back-ups.
Issues #2-#11 will feature a 10-part "History of the DCU" story.
As mentioned before, the weekly series will tie-into seasons and
holidays and will see six stories running throughout the run.

The maximum cover price the weekly series will be is $2.99. It
will launch in the second week of May, and will be the chance for
some minor characters to shine.

Hawkman changes its title to Hawkgirl with issue #50 as a part of
the publisher's "One Year Later..." event. The series will also be
getting a creative team change, with Walt Simonson coming on
board as writer and Howard Chaykin joining as penciler (marking
the first return of both to mainstream, ongoing DCU work in years
- and the first time in years that the two former studio mates
will be working together).

Asked how edgy the series would be, it was stated that the
Hawkgirl series may be stronger than some of the softer DCU
titles, but will be a part of the DC Universe.

Absolute Sandman starts in 2006; there was no announcement of
price or extras yet, but DC will be recoloring the early issues
of the Sandman series to match the higher production values of
the later issues, as well as touching up the lettering in some
issues where reversed lettering dropped out a bit. This is part
of a plan to do every Sandman story in the Absolute format.
Concurrent with the publication of Absolute Sandman, DC will not
be keeping the current hardcovers edition collections of the
series in print.

February will see the next of DC's progression in its revival of
IPC characters (Albion), with Thunderbolt Jaxon by Dave Gibbons
and John Higgins. Garth Ennis is reportedly to follow in the IPC
line with a miniseries, though the character Ennis will be
handling was not named.

Though not slated to be announced, DC representatives, noting
that the DC solicts had leaked out over the weekend on the Silver
Bullet Comic Books website (since taken down and not to be
confused with retailer and Newsarama sponsor
silverbulletcomics.com), confirmed that the current Wonder Woman
series will be ending that month, as will Gotham Central and
Gotham Knights. Flash ends in January with the already-solicited
issue.

June & Juiy: one new major series launch every week in June, one
new major high-profile creative team launch every week in July.

Batman/Spirit will ship in June, with the new ongoing Darwyn
Cooke Spirit series starting in June.

In DC Direct news, an upcoming Silver Age Superman set will
include Superman (with robot machineworks behind the s-shield),
Lois, Jimmy, Perry, Lex, and Beppo the Super-Monkey.

There will be a recall on the Crisis on Infinite Earths action
figures from DC Direct, due to line-wide problems with paints,
assembly, and looks. Consumers will be able to return figures
they bought as well. The production problems with the CoIE line
was pointed to as the cause of the shipping date changes for
other DC Direct lines.

Upcoming Infinite Crisis figures will include Power Girl, Alex
Luthor, OMAC, and Superboy Prime with his new costume design.

There will also be a line of figures based on Darwyn Cooke's
versions of the characters from DC: New Frontier.

The next Elseworlds series will include a Spectre/Norm McCay two
figure set at a single-figure price, in a box designed to match
the look of the original Kingdom Come boxes. The subline will
also include more Red Son figures and Gotham by Gaslight figures.

The coming JSA line will include four modern JSA member figures,
and one classic--the Atom--which will feature two complete
figures in one box, one with the hood costume and one with the
cowl revealing the lower face.

THE VERONICAS APPEAR IN VERONICA #167

THIS DECEMBER, MEGA-HOT SINGING DUO THE VERONICAS MEET THEIR
NAMESAKE, VERONICA LODGE!

What's in a name? Music fans and comic book readers alike will
find out when they pick up VERONICA #167. When real live 20 year-
old identical twins Jess and Lisa Origliasso needed a name for
their act, they looked no further than Archie Comics' own
Veronica Lodge for inspiration! Veronica's sass, flash, and style
fell right in line with the duo's own image, and a new,
unbeatable pop sensation was born! Now, the dazzling duo are
about to become comic book characters and meet their namesake in
a special comic book tale. It's a case of life imitating art, and
art returning the favor!

With natural born singing and songwriting talent, fantastic
looks, and a tough and edgy sound with hooks and harmonies
galore, The Veronicas created quite a buzz in music industry
circles. Before too long, they found themselves co-writing songs
with such hitmakers as Billy Steinberg (Madonna), Clif Magness
(Avril Lavigne) and Rick Nowels (Dido). As if that weren't
enough, the duo also attracted a team of top-flight producers for
their debut album that included, among others, Max Martin
(Britney Spears), Don Gilmore (Linkin Park), Dr. Luke (Kelly
Clarkson) and Toby Gad (Enrique Iglesias).

The end result is The Veronicas' sizzling CD, "The Secret Life of
The Veronicas." Featuring styles as diverse as rock, hip hop and
R&B, this collection of infectious pop confections is anchored by
the duo's unique harmonic blend. Standout cuts include
"Revolution," "Mouth Shut," "When It All Falls Apart" and
"Everything I'm Not" along with their scorching new single
"4ever."

Currently on tour across the U.S., Jess and Lisa have a special
guest along for the ride: Veronica Lodge! Be on the lookout for
The Veronicas' tour bus, featuring the likeness of comic books'
favorite rich girl painted on the side in an exclusive design
created by Archie Comics! The special "Veronica" bus can be seen
starting with the tour's stop in Kansas City through its arrival
in New York City.

Speaking of the tour bus, it figures prominently in "What's in a
Name?," the special story guest-starring The Veronicas in
VERONICA #167. When Veronica spots Jess and Lisa's bus stranded
on the highway, she offers to fly the pop duo to their concert in
Riverdale. The three girls become fast friends, and it isn't long
before Veronica is introducing Jess and Lisa to all her friends
in Riverdale... which might not be the best idea considering how
girl crazy Archie is! This special story is just one of the ways
Archie Comic Publications plans to kick off its 65 th
anniversary, and is only the first of more The Veronicas stories
to come throughout the Archie line. Catch the wave of excitement
that is The Veronicas... be sure to pick up VERONICA #167!
Newsarama Note: The appearance of the girls in the issue
apparently indicates that Archie and The Veronicas have settled
their legal differences. The last time the band and the publisher
were in the news, it was due to Archie sueing the Veronicas for
infringing on Archie's rights to the name "Veronica."

DANIEL ACUNA EXCLUSIVE TO DC

Daniel Acuna, the artist whose recent work include covers on
JLA and Outsiders, has signed an exclusive agreement with DC
Comics.
"It's unbelievable that DC, the publisher that gave me my
favorite comics as a teenage fan, has offered me now this
opportunity," Acuna said.
  "I can't stop asking myself if this isn't a dream. It's very
exciting to be able to work with characters with such a long and
magnificent history, characters that my father read when he was
young. To me it's a real honor to have the chance to leave my
mark on them."
"I'm simply astounded by Acuna's talent," said Editorial Art
Director Mark Chiarello. "He is somehow able to blend the
dynamics of American comic art with a sophisticated European
graphic album style. His recent covers for the JLA and Outsiders
put him in that rarified air of super cover artists like Adam
Hughes, Alex Ross and James Jean."

Tokyopop Plans Seven Manga Launches For April and May, 2006
 November 14, 2005
Tokyopop will launch seven new Japanese manga titles in April and
May, 2006.  The April title with the strongest potential is
probably Chibi Vampire, a five volume series by Yuna Kagesaki
with an associated anime (titled Karin, also the Japanese title
of the manga).  It tells the story of a vampire girl who has a
unique problem--instead of needing blood once a month, she gives
her victim hers. Also up for April launches are Yubisaki Milk
Tea, a four-volume series in which a cross-dresser discovers who
loves him; Magical x Miracle, a four-volume series by Yuzu
Mizutani about a girl at a wizard school; and X-Kai, a two volume
hard-boiled romance.

In May, the strongest launch is probably Rozen Maiden, which
Tokyopop publisher Mike Kiley identified as one of Tokyopop's 06
launches with the greatest potential (see "Interview with
Tokyopop Publisher Mike Kiley, Part 3").  The four-volume series
is by Peach Pit, a manga studio collective that also created the
successful series DearS.  The story is of a boy that orders a
doll online that comes to life.  The other May releases are
Shrine of the Morning Mist, a four volume series by Hiroki Ukawa,
about a boy whose left eye can see into the spirit world; and
+ANIMA, a ten-volume series by Natsumi Mukai about a world in
which some people (ANIMA) have animal characteristics.
