Click and talk back! http://us.click.yahoo.com/u8TY5A/tzNLAA/yQLSAA/bGIolB/TM --------------------------------------------------------------------~-> NEW X-MEN #20 Reviewer: Kerry Birmingham, birmy@juno.com Story Title: "Childhood's End: Part 1 of 4" I'm dying. Make it stop. Writers: Craig Kyle & Chris Yost Pencils: Mark Brooks Inks: Jaime Mendoza Colors: Brian Reber Assistant Editor: Sean Ryan Associate Editor: Nick Lowe Editor: Mike Marts Editor in Chief: Joe Quesada Publisher: Dan Buckley X-23 Created by: Craig Kyle Published by: Marvel Comics Does a book about "New" X-Men have a place in a universe suddenly revamped specifically to include as few X-Men as possible? To be honest, this title has never held a whole lot of interest for me. Exiting writers Nunzio DeFilippis and Christina Weir never quite hit the mark for me, despite an obvious affinity and affection for these characters, and the switch from New Mutants to New X- Men, aside from the obvious sales advantages of having the name "X-Men" in your title, seemed like a lazy and, frankly, unworthy piggybacking of Grant Morrison's work on the title that had formerly been called New X-Men (off-topic: renaming titles has gotten out of hand). In short: I didn't dislike it, I just didn't trust it. A talented but untried creative team couldn't sell me on the concept - Unknown heroes taught by other characters who weren't interesting enough for the X-Men proper (I'm looking at you, Danielle Moonstar) but had too much of a following to relegate to character limbo. It was just too much in an already crowded corner of the Marvel Universe. With such an (admittedly unfairly) dismissive attitude towards this title, it was easy to ignore. A fringe book of the X-canon, there for its fans but not for me, no sir. My feeling is that no "New" X-Men are really necessary. Apparently Marvel disagrees: any book with "X-Men" in the title has a place following the House of M, conceptual breakdown be damned. To that end, animation vets Kyle and Yost replace DeFillipis and Weir, tearing down the previously established character lineup and group dynamic to fit more cloesly with House of M's Decimation. "Tearing down" is accurate: picking up at the exact moment of Wanda's reordering of the world in House of M #8, this issue represents a clearing of the decks, depowering much of the student body (and much of the book's cast) at Xavier's and showing much of the perfectly logical fallout thereof. There's panic in the halls; students wonder at the seemingly random nature of the power losses and many react in extreme ways ("It hurts! It hurts!" says one powerless student beatifically, as he happily pounds his bloody knuckles into a wall). This kind of chaos dominates the issue, and much of the drama, I suspect, will have more meaning to longtime readers who know the cast and can react to the sudden change of events, as opposed to readers who have only the periodic name/powers blurbs to go by. This is clearly the new creative team setting up the change in status quo, eliminating the characters they don't want to use and setting new plot threads in motion. For the most part, it works. There's a lot of nifty little moments scattered throughout, like the aforementioned "It hurts!" and a girl convinced she can still fly. One imagines this is, in highly concentrated microcosm, what the rest of the Marvel Universe is going through. It's light on plot, high on chaos. A few of the character inclusions are worrisome, however. A prologue featuring William Stryker sets him up as a larger menace, despite his relatively insignificant position in the world of X-Men villains. He served a purpose in, obviously, God Loves, Man Kills, but seems surplus to requirements in the modern continuity, as evidenced by that story's lackluster sequel (I blame the movies). Similarly problematic is X-23. Kyle created the character in the X-Men: Evolution cartoon series, so her inclusion here is more or less a given. Kyle can hopefully reconcile the seemingly contradictory elements of her character that have dogged her since her appearances in NYX and Uncanny X- Men, but X-23's one scene in this issue isn't particularly auspicious, featuring Wolverine in an irritatingly straightforward paternal role (one yearns for the gruff love he used to give Jubilee and Kitty Pryde). It's father/daughter (or father/clone, I guess) angst-ridden fluff, and it suits neither character. The last page reveal, featuring a mutilated cast member, is intriguing in itself but by no means an original turn of events (at least one other character with same mutation suffered a similar fate). How these characters are used in the future will go a long ways towards justifying their presence in this issue. The art by Mark Brooks is, well, lovely. There's just enough of the manga influence for it to be exaggerated but not distracting; it's reminiscent of Randy Green or Olivier Coipel. The inks feel a bit heavy for what's such a basic and open art style, but it nonetheless pleases the eye and moves along a story packed with crowds of characters begging for distinction from the masses. So how relevant are these "New" X-Men when we've just lost most of the old ones? My instincts tell me, not very; it's a decent enough introduction, but with such a large cast of characters to realign, eliminate, and redefine, there's no real connection for the casual reader. It may be worth keeping an eye on to see what Kyle and Yost do with their new charges, but New X-Men remains capably mounted but inessential reading - for now. ART: 4.0 STORY: 3.0 OVERALL: 3.5 NEW EXCALIBUR #1 Reviewer: W. Molstad mols0019@umn.edu Story Title: Here we go AGAIN! Maybe they should make Juggernaut Irish! (And Nocturne can have a German accent for no reason..) Written by: Chris Claremont Pencils by: Michael Ryan Inks by: Rick Ketchum Colored by: Pete Pantazis Lettered by: Tom Orzechowski Cover by: Michael Ryan Assistant Editor: Sean Ryan Associate Editor: Nick Lowe Edited by: Mike Marts Editor-in-Chief: Joe Quesada Publisher: Dan Buckley Published by: Marvel Comics I laughed when I first saw the cover of this issue. Not that it's bad art; in fact, Michael Ryan does lovely figures. It's just that each of the characters seems to be staring at you thinking, "Why am I here?" I suppose that the writer could justify this answer by simply saying that there is fate involved and that each of these characters just happened to land together. That's what life is like after all, right? This is Marvel Comics though, not reality, and someone had to pitch this book. After all, check out the "Decimation" on the upper left of the book, which gave me the same cringe that most Marvel mini-series have been these days. Why, why, why? Why are all of these titles necessary? Is there really one coherent "Decimation" storyline, anyway? Do you need this? No you don't, unless you're into collecting everything by Claremont, desperate for some watered-down original Excalibur nostalgia, or a X-Books fiend with a fat pocket. The insides basically bring us up to speed on most of the characters that will be in and or involved with the team. Only two of the U.K. based-team members are British. There are some typical Claremont "concept" villains, like clones of the original X-Men, chasing the heroes. Also be prepared for little inside references made for the same people that are begging to know if Thunderbird III and Sketch lost their powers in Decimation. And - it's "NEW"! What's next, "New Champions?" Not that I hated The Champions (I loved them, just like the original Excalibur). This title so far really isn't new - it's just a rearranging of X-characters that we're familiar with. Aside from Nocturne. The logo looks like a sword though - cool. Okay, so despite that logo, I don't have much faith after this first issue. Claremont is speedier and less "decompressed" than say Ellis or Bendis, thank goodness. But like last year's Excalibur(hard to keep track, isn't it?) we get a whole lot of buildup and ideas - yet it's tough to believe that the writer can keep it all together. Is that the true suspense?!? I mean, I know of online discussions centered around abandoned Claremont subplots! That's the real problem here; even with the positives, the recent post-Reload titles have approached pointlessness. Is this title headed in the same direction? The Excalibur of Genosha, which went nearly nowhere, needed focus. It did little but bog down Magneto continuity even further. After the "Magneto is alive!" reveal of issue 1, we never received an answer. That answer, only somewhat revealed, finally came in another writer's comic over a year later. Why was it even called Excalibur? Was it due to the often mentioned "Knights of the Round Table" reference surrounding Xavier? That is vague as-is. Speaking of vague, remember Wicked, Dark Beast, and tentacle armed Callisto? What will they ever do again? I wouldn't mind more Wicked in this one, but that's only because of the mall goth character design. I'm a sucker for it, what can I say? Wicked aside, the last Excalibur headed nowhere after a questionable set-up. X-Treme X-Men too was supposed to be about "Destiny's Diaries" but flopped around with Vargas and the unusual God Loves Man Kills II - that title lost steam during most storyarcs. The same warning signs from the beginnings of these recent Claremont runs appear here. In a sense, we get a "sort-of" reason for why everyone is around, but it's not exactly clear yet. Well, even if the concept is sketchy, the execution is pretty good. There is corny superhero dialogue but I like it. The accents are Garth Ennis quality. The backdrop of London is well- rendered by Michael Ryan, a solid artist with a great inking and coloring team. And Claremont sequences the action and "meet-ups" well, so it is nicely paced. He's still a good writer at heart, he just needs to focus. If the plot goes somewhere with an ounce of clarity in the next few issues than maybe this could turn out to be worth it for "X-Fans". I just don't see it as being a must- have as of now. And just what again does this have to do with Decimation? In fact, it's really about the opposite. What we have here are some X-characters who were sitting on the fringes of obscurity being led around by Captain Britain. Decimation was supposed to clear the mutant world of such "questionables". If the mutant population was reduced to 10%, then those few left are surely in the spotlight. Title: Wolverine # 34 Publisher: Marvel Writer: Daniel Way Penciler: Javier Saltares Inker: Mark Texeira Price: $ 2.50 US, $ 3.50 Can Rating: 2 out of 5 stars Comments: In this House of M tie-in it has Nick Fury training the Red Guard a group of mutants, which include Wolverine and Earshot. Neither one likes Fury. He is hard on al his trainees. There are only a couple little scuffles. This issue needed lots more action. The art really doesn't have much to show you. Only Mystique is in costume, she looks pretty good. The question is, is Wolverine a traitor to his kind? Has he been working with Fury all along? Other than a flashback Wolverine isn't seen this issue and even than he isn't around much. Title: House of M # 7 Publisher: Marvel Writer: Brian Michael Bendis Penciler: Olivier Coipel Inkers: John Dell, Scott Hanna & Tim Townsend Price: $ 2.99 US, $ 4.25 Can Rating: 4 out of 5 stars Comments: The opening battle scene is one of hero vs hero both groups thinking they are right. A lot of action going on here. Poor Wanda all she wants is to be happy. All Petro wants is to protect his sister. The art is kind of sad, as these two seem in a hopeless situation. The love they feel for each other clearly comes through in the drawings. It is revealed who was behind it all. It was not who you thought. That part of this comic was well done. The art though is wonderful showing this dysfunctional family. What happens as we fade to white again? The mystery and suspense are great. You'll be waiting in breathless anticipation for the conclusion. Title: Black Harvest # 1 Publisher: Devil's Due Writer: Josh Howard Artist: Josh Howard Price: $ 3.25 US Rating: 4 out of 5 stars Comments: A reporter goes to a small town looking for UFO's and he finds an almost naked girl in the road. She is drawn beautifully. Josh can draw a really sexy young girl. His art style has a bit of a cartoonish look to it but it works really well. Zaya shows up after being missing for three years. She is not quite the same girl. What happened to her in the three years she was missing? And what is she going to do next? There is some suspense built and you will be routing for that reporter that is being accused of kidnapping her. He is a good guy at least he seems so. There could be a lot of things happening in here that you don't expect. Title: JLA # 21 Publisher: DC Writer: Bob Harras Penciler: Tom Derenich Inker: Dan Green Price: $ 2.50 US, $ 3.50 Can Rating: 3 out of 5 stars Comments: The ex-League members have a strained relationship. It just keeps getting worse. Dawn was having an affair with Green Arrow before her husband died. Why is GA been made out to be such a dog? Brutale looks great and in action fantastic. His costume is a dark vision of a warrior ready to fight. His moves are skillful. Nightwing does need the helping hand he gets. Nightwing gives Green Arrow a talk about not playing God and being in the real world. What has DC comics done to GA? That's the type of thing he would say. Dawn has a shocking announcement of what the future holds. The art is good. And Black Canary looks really great in her sexy fishnets. Title: Legend of Isis # 5 Publisher: Alias Enterprises/Bluewater Productions Writer: Ryan Scott Ottney Penciler: Nadir Balan Inkers: Terry Staats, Peter Deluca & Mostafa Moussa Price: $ 2.99 US Rating: 3 out of 5 stars Comments: Isis is looking good back in her skirt. Its nice to see the pants off her. She is drawn well. When Jodo Girl makes her appearance she steals the show. These big strong super-heroes are left standing in the dust as she takes over. You don't need super powers to be a hero. Atlas is funny, the women look hot. And we get some action. Also a nice little surprise! _________________________________________________________________ ----------------------------------------------------------------- COMICS OBSCURA Mike Curtis shandafa@cyberback.com [COMICS OBSCURA are facts Mike Curtis has dug out during his 30 years of collecting Superman and writing about comics. But, just as he did in the 1918 TARZAN OF THE APES., in the new film Elmo spoke not a word.
