Title: Black Panther # 9
Publisher: Marvel
Writer: Reginald Hudlin
Penciler: David Yardin
Inker: Jay Leisten
Price: $ 2.99 US, $ 4.25 Can
Rating: 2 out of 5 stars
Comments: This issue is pretty lame with the X-Men and Red Ghost
with his super apes and even Dragon Man it is boring. Havok and
Iceman wine at each other like children. The super apes just act
silly.
The art has nothing that makes it stand out. It is fairly
bland.
Seeing Storm and T'Challa kiss was a nice touch with the
promise of maybe more romance some day.
T'Challa does show some of his royal attitude. He lets you know
he is a King.

Title: Captain America # 11
Publisher: Marvel
Writer: Ed Brubaker
Penciler: Steve Epting
Inker: Steve Epting & Mike Perkins
Price: $ 2.99 US, $ 4.25 Can
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Comments: We watch as Bucky Barnes is taken from frozen in ice to
an assassin with a robotic arm.
The Winter Soldier is a pitiful creature only awakened when he
is needed to kill someone. He didn't ask for any of this. He
doesn't deserve it. Most of his memories are gone but buried deep
inside is some part of who he once was. So he stands frozen in a
warehouse awaiting his next assignment. Its a sad existance if
you can call it that.
Captain America, Steve Rogers is only in the comic for a  few
pages more than enough time to show how much he misses Bucky.
The art for this type of story is fitting. Its somber and dark.

HERE COMES MARVEL MULE

In 1950, comedian Jack Carson made THE GOOD HUMOR MAN, a low
budget film dealing with an ice cream vendor and his adventures
with a gang of neighborhood kids.  In the film's plot, all the
youngsters gather each afternoon to listen to THE ADVENTURES OF
CAPTAIN MARVEL on the radio, while wearing their Capt. Marvel
capes, including Carson.  When in trouble, club members are
supposed to give a distress call of NAITPAC LEVRAM. At the film's
conclusion, all the club members come to Carson's rescue,
including a mule wearing a Captain Marvel cape!  To top off the
film's comic significance, the chief villain would be wearing
tights and cape the next year on film.  He went on to fame playing
SUPERMAN on television and his name was George Reeves.

Name: Flare #15 Jan 06 - Adventures in Olympus - Eos - Goddess of
Dawn
Publisher: Heroic Publishing
Creative Force: Dennis Mallonee, Larry Houston, Jeff Albrecht,
Mike Estlick & others.
Website: www.heroicpub.com
Email: licensing@heroicpub.com
Price: $2.99
Comments:  Eos aka Teresa aka Flare is in a place like heaven that
we all know as Olympus, she bathes in the sunlight and feels good
about herself, she had some problems with Giant, but things are
peaceful now.  In this peaceful solitude, it is soon interrupted
by Mr. Pan.  Mr. Pan plays a song that is dedicated to the beauty
of Flare.  I must say that Flare does look pretty hot in this
issue.  But, I won't get into that.  Uh..huh.  Pan tries to seduce
Flare, but is a gentleman about it and Flare flies away knowing
that Giant truly does love her, but they must be separated,
because Flare must be on Earth with the Champions.
In the second story we have Ms. Feran doing some modeling poses
for a photographer and she has this nifty superhero costume on.
Donnah observes that Terri's back is still scarred by the Tigress
and if something isn't done soon, she will have permanent scars.
Donnah is going to consult her grandfather to see if some type of
magic will eliminate the scar tissue.  As the story progresses you
will see Aphrodite go up against the Cyclops, luckily Pan is there
to assist her.  Pan and Aphrodite hit if off romantically and Pan
when he gets his way, says that from this moment on, you belong to
me.  When Aphrodite finally slays the Cyclops, she is thanked for
this deed by the dying Cyclops, for now his mistress Nyx can be
reborn!  The story and the artwork in Flare #15 will take your
breath away!

Name: Flare Presents - The Adventures of Chrissie Claus #30 Jan
06
Publisher: Heroic Publishing
Creative Force: Wilson Hill, Luise Perrine, Gordon Purcell, Terry
Pallot, Terrance Griep, Alfredo Alcala & others.
Website: www.heroicpub.com
Email: licensing@heroicpub.com
Price: $2.99
Comments:  Chrissie and her friends, Holly Holiday, Missy
Mistletoe, Ginger Snap and Penelope Pixie went on Spring break in
Fort Lauderdale and met some boys and had some fun, but Holly got
snippy and stole Chrissie's magic hat, when a dragon came looking
for Chrissie, the hat got Holly into trouble.  Holly's been caught
and Chrissie's going to have to rescue her.  That is where the
story resumes.  Holly Holiday is swept up by this incredibly huge
dragon.  The aerial scenes are exciting to look at, the dragon is
drawn with such clarity, and it's almost like watching a movie.
Holly is taken to a demonic entity that is surrounded by his
minions.  This entity wants to capture Christmas, not a Holiday
and when Holly plants a kiss on him, he is repulsed and finds her
to be wicked.  Penelope Pixie will remind you of Peter Pan's
Tinkerbelle, she's a tiny flying woman creature that buzzes all
over the place. The evil minions make toys like Johnny
Switchblade, a doll that carries a switchblade.  In this issue,
you also get a 2nd story called The Divine Intervention that has
completely different artwork from the artwork that you become used
to with Heroic Publishing.  The artwork in this story is very
realistic.  When a holy man thinks he has saw an angel, the reader
realizes he actually is seeing another superheroine from the
universe of Heroic Publishing!   After you see Harry Potter 4 this
holiday season, save yourself an added treat with The Adventures
of Chrissie Claus #30!

Name: The Middle Man #3
Publisher: Viper Comics
Creative Force: Javier Grillo-Marxuach, Les McClaine
Website: www.vipercomics.com
Price: $2.95
Comments:  Our heroine is Wendy Watson.  Once a plain girl with
meaningless jobs, she has now been recruited to work for a
secretive organization to fight the bad, the strange and the
repulsive.  Now she must investigate for The Middleman, a series
of murders of leaders of the criminal underworld by a killer who
is elusive, ruthless and cunning.  Wendy considers herself now a
superhero, but she must solve crimes via computer, her adventure
takes her to the Simionica Animal Research Laboratories and she
encounters genetically engineered chimps.  These monkeys are well
taken care of, they even have internet and mail order privileges.
There is plenty of drama, some humor and plenty of action.
Wendy plays around with some weapons and one weapon is like a
light saber, she is told to be careful with it.   They chase after
a talking genetically altered monkey in the jungles.  The artwork
is black and white, but fits with the story well.  The artwork is
majestically done.  The Middle Man is a cross between X-Files and
24, it can't get any better than this!

Name: Karma Incorporated #2 and #3
Publisher: Viper Comics
Creative Force: David Hopkins, Tom Kurzanski, And Marlena Hall
Website: www.vipercomics.com
Price: $2.95
Comments:  I love Karma Incorporated, you can hire someone from
this organization to ruin someone's day, let's say they get some
karma payback!  A staff member wants some Karma payback on his
boss Donald Williams and is willing to pay to ruin his boss's day
and Karma Incorporated will make it look like an accident.
Donald Williams aka Mr. Donny (that's what he has his employees
call him) gets trapped in an elevator for 3 hours and then is
smothered by cockroaches.  Karma Incorporated tries to convince
the police that they are a data solutions company, when the police
try to shut down their business. The artwork is filled with bright
colors and the artwork is done with sharpness, it's eye-candy to
the reader.  There is some intense drama as a big thug tries to
rob a white collar worker and gets shot in the process.  In the
2nd issue, our white collared business man Rob Wilson life is
falling apart, his suburban life is in ruins, his wife was having
an affair and she hired Karma to ruin his life.
Rob had his policeman friend bully Karma and then of course he
was confronted by the thugs that tried to rob him and he shoots
one of them.  Remember the dog crap in a burning paper bag door
trick?  That trick is pulled in the 2nd issue as the victim tries
to stamp out the fire.  Of course the whole house catches on fire.
There is some domestic violence shown in this story and it's
pretty graphic.  In fact the scenes reminded me of the movie 'The
War of the Roses'.  Karma Incorporated is an intense story that
will keep you riveted from the beginning to the end!

Name: Dead@17 Protectorate #1
Publisher: Viper Comics
Creative Force: Alex Hamby, Benjamin Hall, Marlena Hall, Josh
Howard
Website: www.vipercomics.com
Price: $2.95
Comments:  Wow!  Angels are depicted in the beginning of this
story and these are angels that you have never seen before.
Chaos ensues in heaven and one of the angels is eaten alive by
large black birds.  From Heaven to Pottersfield, the man asleep in
Pottersfield wakes up from this nightmare of angels, or is it
a nightmare?  Now scene shift to Darlington Hills where innocent
girls talk of a Spring dance.  When a religious man finds the
Seraph's chronicle, he must battle the demon known as Legion.
His battle is short lived, his bravado is short lived, as Legion
has there way with him.  The Legion gets around, because we all
know the Legion from the Exorcist and when I did my research on
the movie The Possession of Emily Rose, the real Emily Rose
claimed to be possessed by several demons and The Legion was one
of them.  You will find shocking demonic possession here in this
story too.  Hideous violence that will place goose bumps on your
body.  It's a war of good v. evil.  When our heroine confronts a
multitude of the undead, you wonder if evil will win out.  The
artwork is superb in this comic book and the colors work well on
the scenery and the characters.  Dead@17 Protectorate is some
scary s###t!  I make no bones about it!

LETHARGIC LAD JUMBO-SIZED ANNUAL #3
48 pages, black & white, color cover, $3.99
Greg Hyland - Creator, Writer, Artist
www.lethergiclad.com

Additional material by Luc Latulippe, Brian Lemay, John Migliore,
Steve Remen.

Lethargic Lad is often seen as a backup strip in DORK TOWER and
in a weekly strip on his own web page. Indeed this annual is a
compilation of strips from June 2003 through February of 2005
from that web site as well as some contributions previously in
DORK TOWER. LL is just a weird kid who uses his amazing powers of
lethargy to become Lethargic Lad. He has a group of "other"
Lethargic Lads that work with him and one is really Naked Blue
Girl but then in black & white they all look white.

In case you haven't guessed, this is super heroics at its
silliest. The gang gets distracted as do the villains. One arc
they are on a quest to get a new outfit for Lethargic boy, the
obligatory sidekick who resembles that kid from the Hawaiian Punch
commercials (raise your hand if you remember him!). He ends up in
a costume resembling Robin I, which leads to in-jokes about
comics. In fact there are a lot of those which helps to hold our
interest as we move from crazy plot to crazy plot. Once in a
while Greg even segues off to cartoons of himself talking to a
frog. Then there is the robot who wipes out the gang and has to
go back in time to stop himself.

It is all quite funny, especially the send up of pop culture
icons. I'll admit I was not enamored of the strip in smaller
doses as a back up strip but the full stories read well and are
more fun. There is a lot of hard work in every page and it shows.

DORK TOWER #32
40 pages, full color, $3.49
Created by John Kovalic
Colors by Melissa Kearcher

Actually, the first 4 pages are in black and white. It appears
aspiring comic book creator Matt has gone in search of his true
love, Gilly the Perky Goth. After some awkward moments they
finally kiss and then . . . she is called away at the sound of a
scream as she changes into THAT GRRRL! What this is in reality is
Matt's attempt to finish his mini-comic before the big convention
in town. Unfortunately, this take is not received too well
critically with his friends. Meanwhile, Igor is trying to keep his
sanity as all the guests for the con he is running are cancelling
- all except Wil Wheaton. So as Matt tries to find his muse and
get his comics right, Igor is faced with running the show
single-handed, with a lot of volunteer help from Wil - too much.
It is all sprinkled with some of the best humor about gamers, pop
culture fans and people in general. John has a good handle on
structure, plotting, pacing and emphasis. His art is just another
aspect of the big story and blends into the experience seamlessly.
It is always fun to read anything he is involved with.

The second half is back up strips featuring Lethargic Lad in what
appears to be a Triple Villain Team-Up. The simple answer is the
punch line.

There is a long installment of SNAP DRAGONS by Kovalic and Liz
Rathke. This is about two kids very much into games of al types
but are banished to the bedroom for some mischief they committed.
So how can they pass the time? How else but with a game of
fantasy. They imagine a voyage on a sailboat to a far land
inhabited by friendly monsters. They have all kinds of fun playing
all kinds of games. By the end you wonder who is imagining who. It
is a clever tale that took me back to a simpler time when friends
and would imagine living on an island with prehistoric creatures,
pirates and other dangers lurking everywhere. Imagination is a
wonderful thing.

DORK TOWER has been a favorite of mine from the start. John keeps
it fresh and entertaining. The addition of color makes it even
better. This is a good issue to check it out.

PS238 #12 & #13
32 pages, black & white, color covers, $2.99
by Aaron Williams
aaron@ps238.com

This two-issue arc deals with time travel. The standard cliche
when mentioning time travel stories is they make your head hurt;
what with the paradox possibilities, alternate timelines and so
on. I think they are fun if done for fun and PS238 is always great
fun. If you are familiar with the recent movie SKY HIGH you will
see a very familiar premise - but Aaron was there first. PS238 is
a school, elementary not high school, for kids of super powered
people. Most are developing their powers and so the school aids in
that education as well - sort of like Xavier's school but more
formal. One among them, Tyler, is the child of the premier heroes
of the age and yet he has no powers. They hope he will develop
some and so he is allowed to attend this exclusive school. As we
have seen in the past he is able to get into just as much trouble
as the others without any powers of his own.

This time his friend Tom gets Tyler involved in a mission through
time. Tom's power is the ability to shift himself, and others, in
time. When his future self shows up as he and Tyler are studying
they drag Tyler to a castle "beyond time and space". This is
where it gets tricky. As he passes through a hall of mirrors his
reflections change in each one. Sometimes he has a helmet and
armor, another sunglasses and a jump suit. But he learns by
touching one that he can share the mind of this alternate Tyler.
Each mirror shows a different or alternate time stream. In some
Tyler has gotten super powers, they do not all show him in a good
light. But one passes words of assurance that not having powers
does not mean he isn't strong or important - in fact he may be
the most important Tyler of all.

This is all to prepare us for the real adventure he is about to
have. Tom and Future Tom find him and advise him he has to stop
their other classmate, Zodon (a brilliant kid in a levitating
chair), from messing around with time travel. All he has to do is
go through the time portal and attach a gizmo to the back of the
chair at the precise moment in time they send him. That adventure
unfolds in issue #13.

There is a lot going on in these issue. If you are new you can
delight in the structure, the exceptional artwork and the
wonderful sense of humor that is the hallmark of all of Aaron's
work. We meet new characters Captain Chronos, the self-proclaimed
guardian of time and his arch-nemesis the Time Master. These are
fun guys with a secret or two. We also have Tyler meet a
character in the 1960's from way back in issue #8. He was
involved in earlier things involving PS238 and through this story
becomes more involved in its future.  The kids have some fun,
bounce around in time, solve a mystery and save the day. In the
end Tyler also scores some old comics for his efforts.

The back up stories by Aaron are Full Frontal Nerdity, his own
take on gamers with their quirks and Nodwick, the other comic
title he publishes. They fill out both issues, along with some
text and letters and give you your money's worth.

NODWICK #29 & #30
32 pages, black & white, color covers, $2.99
by Aaron Williams

Nodwick is a henchman to a band of adventurers in a middle ages
world with sorcerers, magic, dragons and all sorts of supernatural
beings. This group includes their own mage, a mercenary and a
female cleric who mostly tends to Nodwick after he gets pummeled
doing all the dirty jobs. It often takes a lot of duct tape to
put him back together again.

The first story is very clever. It sends our group on a quest to
aid the Legion of Princesses. They are the guardians of the 128
bits that make up the world and they have been invaded. Count
Repugsive has scattered most of the bits but held back only 8,
which he will scatter and thereby destroy the world unless the
rulers of the lands surrender. Nodwick's band gets the job to
defeat him because, well, they are near. Then the art changes
completely to pixel art or sprite images like those in very old
video games, hence the reference to 8 bits. But the strength of
the book is not in this gimmick but in the story which takes the
form of a video game with Nodwick being the character in play.
Fortunately for him he can call for help and one of the others
appears. It is like watching screen captures from Mario Brothers
complete with one ups, flaming fireballs and even a powerup that
turns Nodwick into Yeagar the mercenary. Who hasn't found the
ultimate gliche that allows for many 1-ups? It is all in there,
including a decisive GAME OVER.

In issue #30 the gang gets a visit from an old friend who brings
along a dragon. She is Rowena the mercenary claiming she was
given the dragon in lieu of her latest fee. But the real story
starts elsewhere as the Lord of Evil, Baphuma'al, is on the move
with an army of skeletons. Meanwhile our valiant adventurers are
trying to tend to the dragon and mainly keep him from eating
Nodwick. Yeager gets an unexpected visitor and they all realize
they have to find the world's laziest henchman, Nitwick, if they
hope to defeat the master of black magic. That is if they can
escape from the warriors of the Duke that Rowena stole the dragon
from! This is the beginning of a story that stretches bach to much
earlier issues but is still accessible to new readers. Again, the
art and the humor tie it all together into one of the best "funny
books" on the market today. Add the backup strip is 9-1/2 Geeks
by Stacy Heger and Misty Gates. The change in style is jarring at
first. While it is not bad it is less fluid with very little
background - mostly talking heads. The geeks are gamers and the
plot is a bit thin with not much punch. I think Aaron is giving
exposure to these people but the quality is not up to the usual
features that fill out the Dork Storm titles.

THE WANNABE #2
32 pages, black & white, color covers, $3.00
Naked Productions
www.naked-productions.com

Chris Hollmer - Creator/Letters
chris@naked-productions.com

Courtney Huddleston - Pencils
James Taylor - Inks
James Dean Smith - Ink Assists
Cover - Mike Zeck/Mike Garcia

This is the story of Erik Miller, a regular guy whose life
changed when his wife is gunned down by a mobster. After drowning
his sorrows for months he happens on a crime and takes charge by
beating the criminal. This event sets him on a path to train
himself to be something more so he can challenge those that
changed his life. In this issue he is getting seriously into
weapons. He wants to buy the best and most efficient and finds a
mentor to help him become the best shooter with any gun.Next he
scores an interview with the New York Time's authority on the
Russian mob. He is slowly working on a plan and gaining
information as well as weapons and clothes to do something, and
we get the feeling he is not going to be as nic as Batman would
be.

The best part of this book is definitely the art. If you haven't
seen Huddleston and Taylor in action it is worth it just for the
art. The story is a bit slow in getting where it is going but
here is enough to keep your interest. You know at some point Erik
is going to start shooting things up, you just want him to get to
it. But the gathering of information and the training is part of
the plan. This is a five-issue arc so I think we will get to the
heart of the matter before too long. This is a decent independent
effort that deserves a chance.

SPRING HEELED JACK
28 pages, black & white, $2.50
Created and self-published by Jeff Potter
jkspott@gemair.com

OK, this is yet another independent comic about a kid who gains
powers and uses them to fight evil. If you think that is not a
good idea you've missed the last 6 decades worth of comics. Yeah
there are a lot of super hero comics out there. The trick to
success is to do them in a different way, one that hasn't been
done or adds a new dimension. This origin story begins with a
group of men with evil intent. They have found a gateway to
another dimension wherein lay fabulous wealth. By tracking down
ancient manuscripts they learned not only how to access that
world but also about an entity that guards the space between the
dimensions. Their's is an uneasy alliance and as is often the
case evil is rewarded with more evil. When the ritual to open the
gateway is successful it unleashes the dweller between
dimensions, a giant dragon, into our world.

Unfortunately it approaches the carnival which has a large crowd
attending. Our boy, Tom Nester, has a unique encounter with the
dragon, surviving a blast of his breath and gaining the power to
jump real high. Now he must try to use this ability to keep the
dragon from harming others.

The action part of the book is in the second half and is the best
part, reading like a well crafted book from any of the major
companies. The art is a little heavy on the ink in parts but is
better than most first efforts I have seen. As a self contained
story it reads well so it remains to be seen how far Jeff can
take it. The beginning, which I have left out a lot of detail
about, is rather wordy. Jeff goes into lots of text about how the
whole alternate dimension was originally found and how the bad
guys planned to use the information about it for their own gain.
I thought he dwelled on this part a little too long, but not
much. The issue ended where it should and was not too long nor
did it lack anything to make it a good read. I hope this is a
success because I would like to see where Tom, or Spring Heeled
Jack as he will be known, goes next. The back cover suggests a
costume and other foes that look interesting. And as an added
treat Jeff includes a couple of single panel jokes that are very
good. Not bad for only $2.50!
