JUDO GIRL FLIES SOLO AGAIN IN APRIL

Judo Girl returns in 2006 with an all-new mini-series at Alias
Comics!

November 20, 2005 - Coming April 2006, JUDO GIRL returns to Blue
Water Productions and Alias Comics with an all-new mini-series by
writer Johnny Lowe and artist Alex Julian.

In this new mini-series, the villainous Hep Cat is back!  He and
Judo Girl had a kinda-almost-sorta-maybe relationship long-ago,
but while Judo Girl has emerged into the 21st century still in
her early 20s, Hep Cat is now in his 60s!  How will this new age
gap affect these two lost lovers, and can Hep Cat and Judo Girl
ever really be together?

"Judo Girl generally has an upbeat, positive personality, and so
will make plenty of humorous remarks during her encounters with
the bad guys, though it'll be somewhat less than in the first
mini-series," said writer, Johnny Lowe of his take on the
characters.

Also expect an appearance by Atlas, and the return of the Judo
Girl villain, Silencer - who first appeared in THE LEGEND OF ISIS
#5!

"Silencer is a good adversary for Judo Girl as she too is
obviously trained in many fighting techniques," said Lowe. "Of
course, Silencer doesn't speak except in rare moments, so Judo
Girl will try and take up the slack in the repartee ... which might
annoy and anger Silencer even more!"

Joining Lowe on this series is artist, Alex Julian, who tells of
his artistic influences, and what fans can expect to find in
April!

"I looked at [artists like] J. Scott Campbell and Roger Cruz, for
the sexy judo girl look, and added a lot of my style to it," said
Julian.  "[Managing Editor] Darren Davis really pushed me to give
the book a cutting-edge by bringing the characters out of the
panel and making objects look like they're flying out at you."

The all-new JUDO GIRL mini-series will be available in April
2006!

MIKE BARON'S "THE ARCHITECT" TO DEBUT ONLINE

ROUND ROCK, TEXAS -- Veteran comics writer Mike Baron will join
the next wave of Web-comics creators with _The Architect_, a 70-
page graphic novella created with the hot up-and-comer artist
Andie Tong, and which will debut on the completely re-vamped
BigHeadPress.Com website in February 2006.

_The Architect_ is a horror story concerning Roark Dexter Smith,
a beguiler, womanizer, bon vivant, amateur mycologist and virtuoso
violinist in addition to being a world-class architect. He also
has a secret ... hobby, which he uses to destroy the family he
believes has betrayed him.

"This tale weaves greed, lust, murder and magic into a tapestry
that proves the perfect vehicle for Tong's clean yet energetic,
Eastern-influenced style," Baron said.

Tong began the project with Baron while a resident or Perth,
Australia. He now resides in London where he works for Marvel UK.

The story is inspired by a tragic historical event from the life
of renowned architect Frank Loyd Wright. "In August, 1914, Mamah
(Wright's mistress,) her two children, and four others were
brutally murdered at Taliesen by a deranged servant who
barricaded them in the dining room and set the building on fire.
Those who managed to escape the flames he killed with an ax as
they ran from the burning building." (-- Frank Lloyd Wright & the
Prairie School in Wisconsin, Kristin Visser, Prairie Oak Press.)

Baron helped spark the first boom of independent, creator-owned
comics stories back in the early 1980s when he co-created the
Eisner-Award-winning _Nexus_ with artist Steve Rude. He has
spawned other creator-owned titles (such as _Badger_) and for
years wrote stories for some of DC and Marvel Comics' company-
owned characters including The Flash, The Punisher, Deadman, and
various Conan-The-Barbarian derived titles.

_The Architect_ will be serialized on the web and if it attracts
a sufficient audience, Big Head Press hopes to publish a quality-
trade paperback version for distribution in the comic-book direct-
sales and the book-trade markets.

Big Head Press was founded in 2002 by Frank W. Bieser as a
publisher of creator-owned graphic novels. In 2006 it is expanding
into the Web-comics field, where it will promote quality graphic
stories from professional creators in a free-viewing medium
supported by advertising and related-product merchandising.

ALIAS SIGNS EXCLUSIVE WITH DIAMOND

Alias Comics moves exclusive to Diamond Distribution; hitting
bookstores in '06!

San Diego, California (November 22, 2005) - Alias Comics,
publishers of such popular titles as SIXGUN SAMURAI, 10th MUSE,
and LULLABY, have recently signed an exclusive distribution deal
with Diamond Comic Distributors, Inc. that will not only supply
comic shops with the publisher's titles, but also bookstores
across the country!

"There were several reasons we signed with them," said Alias
publisher, Brett Burner, "but mostly because the deal fits best
with our model of a company.  They're working hard for us, and
are going to help push our trades into the book market."

Diamond will also be taking on the burden of order fulfillment,
among other functions, and therefore less labor and warehousing
space will be required on the part of Alias.

"This will help us focus on other, more important things," added
Burner, "and that IS to the greatest benefit of our studios."

Another great advantage is that Diamond can help place Alias
trades and graphic novels into bookstores everywhere, greatly
expanding their exposure and sales. Currently, Diamond trade
paperback and graphic novel solicitations for the book market run
two months further out than the regular comics.  As a result of
this, Alias will push all currently expected releases of graphic
novels and trades to coincide with bookstore releases over the
summer of 2006 - beginning in May.

"It is a shame to have to do this with our October-December books,
but it is a one-time setback whose result will be better overall
sales for each title, therefore better circulation," said Burner.

Below is a tentative release schedule for when Alias TPBs and GNs
could start appearing in bookstores everywhere.

( ** - available NOW in comic shops everywhere!)

May 2006:
DEAL WITH THE DEVIL - trade paperback: vol 1
IMAGINARIES: LOST & FOUND - trade paperback: vol 1
ED'S TERRESTRIALS  ** (available in comic shops this November)
LULLABY WISDOM SEEKER - trade paperback: vol 1 **
 PSI KIX - graphic novel: # 1 **
THE LEGEND OF ISIS: BEGINNINGS - trade paperback: vol 1**

10TH MUSE - trade paperback: vol 1 **
OZF5: GALE FORCE - one-shot **
JOHN CARPENTERS SNAKE PLISSKEN CHRONICLES - trade paperback: vol
1 **
LIONS TIGERS & BEARS - trade paperback
JOHNNY CARONTE: ZOMBIE DETECTIVE & REVOLVER - graphic novel: vol

August 2006
10TH MUSE: MANGA SIZED - trade paperback: vol 1
THE LEGEND OF ISIS - trade paperback: vol 2
JUDO GIRL - trade paperback: vol 1
DAVID SHEPHERDS SONG - trade paperback: vol 1 ** (available in

PSI KIX - graphic novel: # 2
TED NOODLEMAN: BICYCLE DELIVERY BOY - trade paperback **

September 2006
10TH MUSE: TRAGEDY STRIKES - trade paperback: vol 2

NOTICE: This early planned schedule is only tentative and subject
to change.  Please watch Alias and Diamond for any shipping
changes.

"This is great for everyone at Alias," said 10th MUSE
creator/writer, Darren G. Davis. "Signing exclusive with Diamond
will not only strengthen our position in the comic book market,
but it's also great to finally get our trades and graphic novels
into bookstores where we can reach a whole new audience."

For more information on these great trades and other Alias
titles, please visit your local comic book shop, or simply visit

The Center for Cartoon Studies-More Than Just a School
This story originally appeared in PW Comics Week on Nov. 22, 2005
By Douglas Wolk -- Publishers Weekly, 11/22/2005

"You know what I got in the mail today?" James Sturm says
excitedly. "All the preliminary sketches that Al Jaffee does when
he does a Mad fold-in," he says referring to long-time Mad
magazine cartoonist. Sturm, a cartoonist whose books include the
critically acclaimed graphic novels The Golem's Mighty Swing and
Fantastic Four: Unstable Molecules, is the founder of the Center
for Cartoon Studies, a new institution that's rapidly turning
White River Junction, Vt., into a comics nexus.

The CCS features a cartooning school (which admitted its first
students this fall), rotating exhibitions (most recently New
Yorker cartoonist Edward Koren) and, now, in an old firehouse
that's a short walk from its main building, the Schulz Library-a
collection of thousands of comics-related books, pamphlets and
ephemera, funded by Charles Schulz's widow, Jean Schulz, to which
Jaffee and many other cartoonists have contributed original work.
This summer, the school will offer a series of one-week
workshops.

In addition, the Center has a deal with Hyperion Books for
Children to produce a series of comics biographies; as Sturm
points out, "We're called the Center for Cartoon Studies-we're
not just a school." The first two titles under the Hyperion deal
will appear next fall. The first book will be about Harry
Houdini, written by Sturm and Jason Lutes and drawn by Nick
Bertozzi, with an introduction by Glen David Gold. The other book
will be on Satchel Paige and will be written by Sturm and drawn
by Rich Tommaso, who just moved to White River Junction himself,
and will include an introduction by African-American studies
professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. Next in line is Henry David
Thoreau, by minimalist cartoonist John Porcellino (Diary of a
Mosquito Abatement Man).

On Mondays, the Center's 20 students have drawing classes (taught
by cartoonists James Kochalka and Steve Bissette, among others);
on Tuesdays and Thursdays, they have classes on writing (taught
by Peter Money and Sarah Stewart Taylor) and the history of
comics. On Wednesdays, former Highwater Books publisher Tom
Devlin teaches a production and design class. All of their
assignments are designed to allow students to work toward
publication in some form. "Right now it's our first semester
ever-we're just kind of feeling out the whole process and how the
school's going to function," Sturm says. "We're going to offer a
one-year certificate and a two-year MFA once we gain our degree-
granting authority, which we do not have yet." Alison Bechdel
(Dykes to Watch Out For), Barron Storey and Alec Longstreth have
already been visiting artists at the school, and Chris Ware,
Kevin Huizenga and Bill Griffith are scheduled to visit soon.

The Schulz Library (whose core is Sturm's personal collection
from the past 30 years) is rapidly expanding; a few comics
publishers, like Drawn & Quarterly, have sent their entire
catalogues. And the students (who range in age from 19 to 32) are
a close-knit group, Sturm reports; many of them live in the Hotel
Coolidge, across the street from the school.

Any big surprises that have come out of the program so far? "In
the back alley behind the school, we've put up a basketball net,"
he says. "It turns out that these geeky cartoonists are pretty
good basketball players."

The Comic Book King

Ukrainian-American Steve Ditko is acknowledged as one of the all-
time great illustrators of comic books. He was born on 2 November
1927 in Johnstown Pennsylvania.

Ditko got his start at the Cartoonists and Illustrators School in
New York City. He began his professional career in 1953, when he
did mostly horror and fantasy for Charlton Comics. His early
covers, depicting, for example, blood-sucking beauties, brought
him instant recognition.

By the end of 1950s, the Golden age of comic books, he'd moved to
Atlas Comics, which soon changed its name to the better known
Marvel Comics. It was with Marvel, in 1962, that he would gain
lasting fame as the co-creator of Spider Man. Readers immediately
identified with Peter Parker, the troubled young man behind the
super-hero mask, who was brow beaten by his boss and rejected by
women. It was characteristic of Ditko to imbue his fictional
characters with mood and anxiety.

Another innovative feature of Spider Man introduced by the
Ukrainian-American artist is that his mask reveals absolutely no
facial features. Ditko himself was a man without a face, almost
never appearing in public and refusing to give interviews to the
media.

His time at Marvel was also marked by conflict. Ditko had a long-
running feud with writer and editor Stan Lee, who claimed to be
the sole creator of Spider Man. Eventually, Lee acknowledged
Ditko's significant contributions to the development of the
character, but their difficult relations led Ditko to leave the
company. The last straw is often alleged to have been a
disagreement as to the secret identity of the Green Goblin, one
of Spider Man's archenemies.

In the second half of the sixties, Ditko returned to Charlton,
which was relatively slower but offered more artistic freedom. It
was there where he created new characters like Blue Beetle,
Captain Atom (the first super hero with a nuclear twist) and,
later, The Question - a crusading television journalist who dons
a faceless mask to dig into stories of corruption off limits to a
normal reporter. The Question is thought to reflect the artist's
philosophical views, which were based on the writings of
Aristotle and Ayn Rand. "My philosophy, in essence, is the
concept of Man as a heroic being, with his own happiness as the
moral purpose of his life, with productive achievement as his
noblest activity, and reason as his only absolute," wrote Rand,
who was born and raised in Czarist Russia before immigrating to
New York. Perhaps the character that best expresses Ditko's
belief in Objectivism is the character Mr. A, whose hard line
against criminals alienated readers and thus sales. The artist's
lecturing style and imposing sociopolitical views earned him the
nickname "Ditko the Dictator." Another commercial flop was The
Creeper, which Ditko created during a short stint with DC Comics.
The artist was apparently using the super-hero genre to explore
ethical issues.

Almost a decade later, Ditko returned to DC Comics with Shade,
the Changing Man, which didn't last long but was later
successfully revived without him. The 1980s marked a slow retreat
into obscurity until the artist finally retired from mainstream
comics in 1998, at the age of seventy-one.

As prolific as he is intensely private, Ditko still works as an
independent in New York. Starting out as a feature artist, he
rose to success along with the genre of comic books itself. Like
what many consider to be his best character, Dr. Strange - a
mystical figure who occupies two different existences at the same
time - Ditko seems to exist in two realities at once: his drawing
room and the pages of the comics he creates.

New X-Men #21, Marvel Knights 4 #25, and Punisher: Silent Night

X-23 Shows Up For School in New X-Men #21

After the startling events from last issue where most
of the Xavier Institute's students were rendered powerless, the
New X-Men must now face a threat from one of the X-Men's deadliest
villains in New X-Men #21.  And if that wasn't enough, the
loose-cannon killer X-23 shows up for school.

William Stryker detests mutants and after the mass
depowering of mutants following the events of the House of M, he
sees this as a sign from God.  Now is his chance to purge the rest
of the mutants from the Earth and he plans on starting with the
students of the Xavier Institute.

The kids find themselves at their most vulnerable and
the combination of Stryker, infighting amongst the team, and the
addition of the wildcard X-23 may finally be enough to end school
forever in New X-Men #21.

The FF's souls are on the line in Marvel Knights 4 #25

Magic rears its ugly head in the Fantastic Four's
neighborhood leading many of the FF's magical friends and foes to
come out of the woodwork in Marvel Knights 4 #25.

It's the beginning of a whole new arc of the occult
with an all-new penciler joining the title in  Mizuki
Sakakibara.

"With 'The Resurrection of Nicholas Scratch,' I'm
getting to bring back some of my favorite classic characters from
the FF mythos," says Ten Terrific writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa.
"Agatha Harkness, the witch who used to be Franklin's nanny and
was seemingly dead; her insane son, the warlock Nicholas Scratch;
and the mutant-witches Salem's Seven... Not to mention Dr. Strange
and, in Parts Two and Three of the three-part arc, Diablo."

When the order of the physical world and the neather-
realms become unbalanced, a dark storm comes out that threatens
all of existence.  This sacred balance is thrown out of whack when
the Salem's Seven attempt to resurrect their father, the warlock
Nicholas Scratch.

"It's a lot of mayhem and magic," promises Aguirre-Sacasa,
"Which is, of course, one of the few realms the FF haven't yet
conquered. Lots of fun, action, and cool horror."

The Fantastic Four have triumphed over incredible odds
many times before, but how will they react when its their souls on
the line in Marvel Knights 4 #25?
