Roy Thomas' Captain Thunder and Blue Bolt Set to Return in 2006
In the mid-1980s, Roy and Dann Thomas created the electrically
powered father-and-son superhero team, CAPTAIN THUNDER AND BLUE
BOLT. Through ten full-color issues in 1986 and 1987, and two
more black-and-white issues in 1992, Roy and Dann worked with
several talented artists, including Dell Barras, Rick Stasi,
Grant Miehm, Howard Simpson, and most especially the late E. R.
Cruz, chronicled CT&BB's quest to clear Captain Thunder's name
and bring justice to those who had actually committed the crime
of which he'd been accused.

Now, at last, Captain Thunder and Blue Bolt are getting ready to
make a comeback! Heroic Publishing has announced that Roy Thomas
is working with Spanish artist Benito Gallego on a new twelve-
page Captain Thunder and Blue Bolt adventure, currently slated to
appear in October 2006 in the sixth issue of Heroic Publishing's
full-color Tales of the Champions comic book title.

This new Captain Thunder and Blue Bolt tale bridges the events
between Captain Thunder and Blue Bolt #10 and Heroic Publishing's
short-lived Sparkplug series. In CT&BB #10, we saw Captain
Thunder vow to retrieve the beautiful Sonja Ernesaks (the "Queen"
of the mercenary chessmen of "King's Gambit") from the custody of
a rogue agency of the U.S. government. Some time later, in
Sparkplug #1, we saw the Queen in Germany, doing battle with
Flare's electric little sister. In Tales of the Champions #6, Roy
and Benito will be showing us precisely how Captain Thunder
managed to win Sonja's freedom.

Captain Thunder and Blue Bolt will continue to appear in at least
two more issues of Tales of the Champions. After that, if sales
of those try-out issues warrant, the first issue of a new ongoing
Captain Thunder and Blue Bolt series could go on sale as early as
the summer of 2007.

Each issue of each comic book from Heroic Publishing contains at
least 28 full-color pages of story and features at a cover price
of $3.25 in the US, $3.99 in Canada. That's more bang for the
buck than fans normally get from other comic book publishers.
Heroic Publishing comic book titles are distributed by Diamond
Comics Distributors, FM International, and Ingram Periodicals.

CBLDF News Release

Judge Consolidates Gordon Lee Counts to 2; CBLDF Proceeds to
Trial

Last week, Judge Larry Salmon issued a decision on motions argued
in defense of Georgia retailer Gordon Lee, further consolidating
the number of charges Lee will face at trial from three to two.
Judge Salmon's decision requires the State to elect between
prosecuting count 3 or 4, noting that they are "materially
indistinguishable."  The judge also ruled that count 5 can
proceed to trial.  Finally, the judge dismissed counts 1 and 2,
the felony counts, and counts 6 and 7, the John Doe misdemeanor
counts, with prejudice.

"As counsel for Gordon, I obviously would have preferred a
complete dismissal of the remaining counts; however, I am happy
that the charges have been further reduced to only two remaining
misdemeanor counts," said defense attorney Paul Cadle.  "As we
have maintained all along, Gordon was overcharged in the
beginning of this prosecution, and the results of our motion
hearings have clearly proven that fact.  We are now left with
only two misdemeanor counts to contest at trial, rather than two
felonies and five misdemeanor counts, and this is a significant
positive result from our standpoint.  At this point, we are
moving forward with the final preparation stages for Gordon's
upcoming jury trial."

Comic Book Legal Defense Fund Executive Director Charles
Brownstein said, "Overall, we're very pleased with the progress
that Mr. Begner and Mr. Cadle have made defending Gordon Lee.
From the start we were convinced of his innocence in this
matter.  The outright dismissal of four counts, and the reduction
of the remaining counts from three to two vindicates our position
that his is a case that's worth the fight.  Moving ahead, we will
maintain our aggressive defense posture, and hope to take this
case to victory when we go to trial."

To date the CBLDF has spent over $40,000 in defense of Lee.  The
group is presently working to shore up funds for the upcoming
trial, which is expected to begin in the Spring.

U.S. Comics in Spanish from Public Square Books
This story originally appeared in PW Comics Week on Jan. 3,
2006 Sign up now!

By Calvin Reid -- 1/3/2006

Public Square Books, a company that brings Spanish-language
editions of U.S., European and Latin American graphic novels and
nonfiction to the American market, is entering the new year with
a new distribution agreement, a growing catalog of popular U.S.
titles and the release of its first Spanish-language manga
titles.

Public Square Books (www.publicsquarebooks.com) was founded in
New York City in 2004 by Larry Bennett. His plan is to bring
Spanish-language editions of the most popular U.S. comics titles
to a growing market of Hispanic-Americans and newly arrived
Spanish-speaking immigrants. PSB signed on with National Book
Network this past September to handle all its distribution. And
beginning in March, PSB will offer its first two manga series,
Rave Master by Hiro Mashima (nine volumes) and Tokyo Mew Mew by
Mia Ikumi (seven volumes), a shonen and a shojo series,
respectively, both aimed at younger readers.

Public Square Books gets exclusive licenses from Spanish
publishers, most notably Barcelona-based Norma Editorial, a
major Spanish publishing house, and issues new ISBNs for the
books in the U.S. market. The company releases eight to 10
titles each month and lists more than 190 titles in its catalog.
PSB's graphic novels range from Hellboy, Love and Rockets and In
the Shadow of No Towers to Persepolis, Queen and Country and the
Sin City series.

The company's licensing strategy has allowed PSB to bring in
large numbers of popular titles while minimizing the risk around
determining print runs for a growing but still new and
unpredictable market. PSB imports Norma's Spanish editions and,
as the company's U.S. business grows, Bennett says he will work
with Norma to include the U.S. market in projecting future print
runs for the series PSB distributes.

Bennett acknowledges that the size of the U.S. market for
Spanish-language graphic novels is hard to determine and even
his bestselling titles sell only in the low thousands. He
estimates the present U.S. wholesale market at about $2 million
to $3 million a year. PSB offers Spanish publishers an
economical way to enter the U.S. market. "We put out a lot
marketing information that a Spanish publisher just wouldn't
do," says Bennett. "You have to sell to Spanish speakers as well
as to bookstore buyers who don't speak Spanish."

It's been a learning process, Bennett says. The company started
out licensing the books of top European artists like Joann Sfar
and Moebius, work generally aimed at older readers, before
quickly concluding that young adult and children's comics work
best in the present market. Both of the new manga series have
anime shows on TV, Rave Master on the Cartoon Network and Tokyo
Mew Mew on Saturday morning Fox TV.

U.S. libraries, typically important resources for immigrant and
non-English-speaking U.S. communities, are a bigger outlet for
Spanish-language comics than bookstores. Bennett reports
enthusiastic support at American Library Association events and
at library association events in California and Texas, as well
as from librarians attending the annual Guadalajara Book Fair.

"The library market is much bigger for us. We need
nontraditional means to reach Spanish-speaking consumers rather
than just retail." But retailers are beginning to pay attention.
National Book Network took on PSB distribution because "they
recognized the growth of graphic novels and the Spanish-speaking
market," says Bennett.

PSB isn't giving up on sophisticated fare. In 2006, look for
Spanish-language editions of Gilbert Hernandez's Palomar, Chris
Ware's Jimmy Corrigan (Jimmy Corrigan: El chico mas listo del
mundo) and multiple titles by Joe Sacco, including Palestine,
Safe Area Gorazde and The Fixer. "We want to bring over the best
stuff, and there's more manga to come," says Bennett. "We're
building an infrastructure for something totally new."

Planetwide Games' Comic Book Creator(TM) Self-Publishing Software
Allows Anyone to Create Comics and Digital Storybooks

ALISO VIEJO, Calif., Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- With the vast
array of next generation laptops, cell phones and digital cameras
on display at the 2006 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), it's
readily apparent that digital imagery is the medium of choice for
most consumers.  However, without some context it's difficult to
display these precious images of our friends, family and loved
ones in a meaningful way.  In response to this need, Planetwide
Games recently released Comic Book Creator(TM), an innovative
self-publishing software that with a few mouse clicks allows
users to create custom comics and scrapbooks.

The software, which is currently available, has a myriad of
applications. Proud parents can use it to make comic-themed
birthday invitations featuring their kids' photos, or even
coloring pages based on their kids' favorite cartoon characters;
students can use the software to illustrate homework or put
together creative presentations; gamers who live through their
virtual identities can now create authentic comic books from
their game play action, documenting their virtual victories;
photo scrapbook makers can capture their important events and
experiences in real-life comic book form and bloggers can quickly
generate political cartoons with a few mouse clicks. Once
created, a comic can be printed out by a home computer or an
outside source that for a fee will staple, bind and shrink-wrap
it.

To create a comic, users need only select from one of over
500 different layout and design templates, drop in their art
assets and insert text bubbles that bring to life whatever story
they can imagine.  Comic Book Creator(TM) will work with any
jpeg, bmp or gif digital image and once users complete their
masterpiece they can share it with friends by printing or
exporting the image into a PDF or HTML file for online
distribution.

Comic Book Creator(TM) is currently available at retail
outlets across the United States and Canada, and via digital
download from http://www.MyComicBookCreator.com/ and sells for a
suggested retail price of $19.99.  Content packs featuring
popular entertainment properties will also be available via
digital download and will range in price from $2.99 to $9.99.

X-Factor Closes Out 2005 With Another Sell Out

After quickly selling out of its first issue, X-Factor #2
has managed to sell out at Diamond in even less time.  This
Decimation title has been on the receiving end of a seemingly
endless amount of fan and critical praise, so Marvel is going
back to press with a second printing variant of X-Factor #2.

Mike Rutschky of SilverBulletComics.com says the first issue of
X-Factor is a "5 out of 5...really terrific and absolutely worth
picking up and following."

Comic Fanatic has labeled the new series as "easily the X-book of
2005."

Don MacPherson of TheFourthRail.com says, "Peter David does it
again. His X-Factor series of the 1990s was thought provoking and
fun, and his more recent Madrox mini-series was clever and
original. With this latest effort, he takes the best elements
from both of those previous efforts and combines them to great
effect."

Writer Peter David and artist Ryan Sook are crafting a unique
title combining noir, super-heroics, and humor.  Set in what was
once Mutant Town before the events of M-Day, X-Factor is now a
private detective agency made up of old favorites like Madrox,
Strong Guy, and Wolfsbane along with new recruits Siryn, M, and
Rictor.

X-Factor has quickly become the favorite new series of many for
2005 so be sure to check out the title that everyone is buzzing
about in the new year.  And for those looking for classic
X-Factor stories, be sure to check out X-Factor Visionaries:
Peter David Vol.1 TPB, Essential X-Factor Vol.1 TPB, and Madrox:

Retailers are also advised to check their orders for
issue #3. Anyone who was a fan of the cliffhanger at the end of
issue #1 will not want to miss the edge-of-the-seat ending of
issue #3.  It's a real heart-stopper.

MARVEL COMICS UNLEASHES SNARLING NEW WOLVERINE ONGOING SERIES!

Industry-leader Marvel Comics is exceedingly proud to announce
that its popular and long-running WOLVERINE series will be joined
by a fresh new sibling, WOLVERINE: ORIGINS.

This March will see a shocking cliffhanger in WOLVERINE #40 that
leads directly and pointedly in to April's WOLVERINE: ORIGINS #1,
the newest Marvel ongoing series. Fans of Logan, the tenacious
Canadian mutant hero, will witness a twist in Wolverine's world
that will eternally alter the rules he lives by day-to-day.

How does WOLVERINE: ORIGINS differ from Logan's current series?
Marvel Editor Axel Alonso chomps at the bit to spill his guts to
curious readers: "Well, as we all know, in the aftermath of HOUSE
OF M, Logan has regained his memory. He knows his past -- all of
it. Armed with a clearer sense of who he is, why he is, and who
done him wrong, Logan's got a whole new set of priorities.
WOLVERINE: ORIGINS will see Logan don his brown costume and
embark on a private mission to set wrongs right, get some revenge,
deal with some demons, rekindle some lost relationships, and come
to terms with major revelations about the complicated tapestry of
his origin...and the patterns he seems doomed to repeat."

"In short, fans should expect major revelations about Wolverine's
past."

Alonso is also determined to illustrate to fans that Marvel is
deadly serious about every aspect of this new venture, with
particular emphasis on the character's previously published past.
"Long-time readers should feel validated because the creative
team has painstakingly researched Logan's entire history and
created connective tissue between the seemingly disparate periods
in Logan's life. Major questions will be answered. How do you kill
an indestructible man? Why do the women in Logan's life die? When
did he really first encounter the Weapon X program?"

"WOLVERINE: ORIGINS is the Official Record," notes Joe Quesada,
Marvel Editor-in-Chief. "Think of what happened in the original
ORIGIN miniseries as Chapter One, and then WOLVERINE: ORIGINS as
all the following chapters - except we're gonna give ?em to you
in no particular order! Each chapter of the series will give
another piece of the puzzle so fans should expect some serious
globe-hopping -- from Japan to Madripoor -- and flashback stories
that will fill in that gap in time between what happened in
ORIGIN and today."

"Hey, no big surprise to hear that I feel pretty warm and fuzzy
about this new series," says Quesada. "I didn't create Wolverine
but I sure have come to think of ol' Logan as my ?baby' - claws
and all! This new ongoing is one of the House of Ideas' proudest
moments, with one of our very, very best characters."

WOLVERINE: ORIGINS' creative team, including writer and both
interior and cover artists, will be announced soon. Stay tuned.

MARVEL ANNOUNCES CREATIVE TEAM FOR NEW WOLVERINE ONGOING!

Hot on the heels of Marvel Comics' announcement of their newest
ongoing series, WOLVERINE: ORIGINS, the industry giant unveils
the creative team who'll tackle the new adventures of the feisty
Canadian mutant.

Writer Daniel Way and artist Steve Dillon, known for BULLSEYE:
GREATEST HITS, PUNISHER VS BULLSEYE, and SUPREME POWER:
NIGHTHAWK, will reunite for WOLVERINE: ORIGINS #1...and beyond.

WOLVERINE: ORIGINS, premiering this April, will detail
Logan/Wolverine's quest to set his past into order and fulfill a
list of personal priorities. In the aftermath of HOUSE OF M, he
knows his origins completely but wants to explore that history
and perhaps relive some of it. The new series promises revenge,
validation, passion, and not a little globe-trotting.

Daniel Way, one of Marvel's Ten Terrific writers, had a strong
reaction when first offered the book. "When it was decided that I
would be allowed to continue my story of Logan's past and future
in a brand-new series, free from any entanglements with the
various upcoming crossovers, I...well, as geeky as it sounds, I
was honored. This is one of Marvel's top two characters, so
getting the green light to go ahead meant a great deal to me. I'm
confident, however, that I'll nail this one-I've been laying out
the story for over a year now, cross-checking facts, keeping an
eye on continuity, networking with other writers...in short, I've
done my homework. To tell you the truth, I feel like the cat that
ate the canary because only I and three other people on the
planet know where this is all going...but only I know how it's
going to get there."

"Logan never surrenders," says Way of the difference between
writing Wolverine and any other character. "Even if winning the
battle means losing the war. Wars come and go...Logan is
forever."

When asked if there's a danger of Wolverine becoming overexposed
with another starring vehicle like WOLVERINE: ORIGINS, Way is
both bemused and confident. "He does seem to just 'pop up'
everywhere, doesn't he? Actually, that's one of the big things
we'll be exploring in ORIGINS...why is Logan always in the right
(or, sometimes, wrong) place at the right time? But again, we'll
be going forward and back...at the same time. We're going to be
exploring Logan's past-and explaining it-while, at the same time,
pushing him forward on his quest for revenge...but revenge
against whom? Short answer: Everyone. No one is innocent."

And for those who wonder how the busiest X-Man alive can keep up
the pace, we have a juicy tidbit for you. Beginning this June,
Wolverine will not be a part of the other two X-teams. Look for
more info on this (and other X-changes) in the coming months!

Artist Steve Dillon, veteran of many popular British comic such
as 2000 AD and DR. WHO, will be know to American fans for such
projects as HELLBLAZER and PREACHER and on the shores of Marvel
Comics with ULTIMATE X-MEN and the aforementioned Bullseye,
Punisher, and Supreme Power: Nighthawk books.

Marvel Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada will be tackling the covers
for WOLVERINE: ORIGINS and is understandably excited about the
writer-artist combo assembled for this newest ramble down the
paths of merry mutantdom. "A fantastic new book deserves a
fantastic creative team. Daniel and Steve have proven themselves
time and time again, both separately and together. Putting them
on ORIGINS is a no-brainer. Steering the Good Ship Marvel doesn't
leave me as much time to draw as I'd like but when it was a done-
deal for Daniel and Steve to take on Wolvy's new book, I just
hadda do the covers! Nuff said!"

MARVEL ENLISTS SUPERSTAR ARTIST TO JOIN THE RANKS OF THE
WOLVERINE: ORIGINS ARMY!

The hits just keep a'comin' concerning Marvel Comics' newest
ongoing series OLVERINE: ORIGINS as the industry leader announces
that superstar artist Michael Turner will be delivering an extra-
special variant cover for the inaugural issue. This stunning
cover will be Turner's first published work for Marvel since the
company announced his coming in the summer.

WOLVERINE: ORIGINS joins the present WOLVERINE title on the
stands and further illuminates the dark recesses of mutant super-
hero Logan's shady and exciting history. The new series will be
written by Daniel Way and drawn by Steve Dillon, the creative
team behind BULLSEYE: GREATEST HITS, PUNISHER VS BULLSEYE, and
SUPREME POWER: NIGHTHAWK. Issue #1 will jump off from the
cliffhanging ending of March's WOLVERINE #40, also written by
Way.

"This cover was a blast to draw!" enthuses artist Michael Turner
on his variant to the standard edition cover to WOLVERINE:
ORIGINS #1, drawn by Marvel Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada (who'll
be handling ongoing cover chores for the series). "I studied the
classic character and drew several layouts only to go back to the
very first layout sketched," explains Turner. "I had also just
seen ?King Kong' so the primal rage I tried to express with this
piece was still on my mind. That's all the credit I'm taking
because Peter's Steigerwald colors knocked this one over the
fence! His visceral textures and color choices blew me away!!!"

Turner is unabashedly excited about this particular gig. "I am
really looking forward to drawing Wolvie again sometime soon..."

Fans will find both the Turner cover and the Quesada cover to
WOLVERINE: ORIGINS #1 at their local comic shop in April.
Retailers note: this will be a 50/50 variant cover split. Stay
tuned for more WOLVERINE: ORIGINS news-as well as some exciting
Michael Turner news!
