ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TEACHER LAUNCHES COMICS IN THE CLASSROOM
WEBSITE

Superhero ABC, Franklin Richards, Lions, Tigers and Bears, Zoom
Suit and Bone Among Early Selections

Contact: Scott Tingley
comicsintheclassroom@gmail.com

January 5, 2006, New Brunswick, Canada - Canadian elementary
school teacher, Scott Tingley, has started a website designed to
help fellow teachers and parents choose comics for both eager and
reluctant readers K through 8.

Tingley, a parent, teacher and a longtime fan of the comics
medium, is an early years teacher in the New Brunswick (Canada)
public school system and the creator of Comics in the Classroom
(www.comicsintheclassroom.net). His goal with Comics in the
Classroom is to share the positive experience that he's found
using comics to help in the learning process.

"I am hoping that my knowledge of differentiated learning and my
love of comics will help Comics in the Classroom visitors in the
motivating and teaching of the children in your lives," said
Tingley.

Tingley's selections run the gamut from Bob McLeod's Superhero
ABC to the older skewing Zoom Suit, aimed squarely at the PSP and
X-Box 360 crowd. Along with these two, selections include Marvel
Entertainment's Franklin Richards, Lions, Tigers and Bears by
Mike Bullock and the perennial seller, Jeff Smith's Bone. These
and other selections are currently featured on the CITC
homepage.

Some choices such as Superhero ABCs are simple. Others such as
Lions, Tigers and Bears (an Image comic) or Zoom Suit may not be
as obvious. Tingley explains, "The goal of the site is to get
kids to read. Comics that have a film, television or video game
look such as Lions, Tigers and Bears and Zoom Suit are great
gateway books for reluctant readers."

Tingley expects the site to grow at a rapid pace. "I may be new
and small, but I am one of the few sites of this type," he said.
"The response has been very strong, but we are always looking to
recommend publications that we believe are a good fit. But space
is filling up.  Creators or publishers that would like their
books reviewed should send review copies as early as possible."
Tingley's next goal is to find a sponsor to help him spread the
word. He plans to offer advertising space sometime during 2006.
Parties interested in submitting review copies or sponsorship
opportunities should contact Scott Tingley at
comicsintheclassroom@gmail.com

PARTS UNKNOWN TRADE PATERPBACK

Parts Unknown Book One, created by Beau Smith and Brad Gorby
and out of print for a decade, has been recollected by Afterburn
Comics and will reach stores this month.

Parts Unknown Book One will be more than 100 pages and will
cost $12.95. Afterburn Comics is an imprint of Blue Line Pro.

Here's how the book, which collects stories originally
published by Eclipse Comics/Knight Press:

"Scalons are ruthless reptile-like beings that are well versed
in the way of rape, pillage and plunder. When the atmosphere of
their home planet went bad and killed off the females of their
race theses intergalactic barbarians knew the males had to branch
out and do so quickly before the toxic air claimed them as well.

"The planet Earth became their ideal destination and new home.
But like any new home it had to be furnished to satisfy their own
twisted needs. That meant spreading their evil seed with Earth
women to produce a new hybrid race so they could officially claim
Earth as their own.

"To do this it means that Earth women would be captured and
taken against their will as prime breeders. Anyone that got in
the way would die a death too brutal to imagine.

"Two members of an elite Chicago Violent Crime unit are going
to try and make sure this nasty Scalon plan doesn1t happen. Those
two special Police Ops members are Pendelton Spurr and Maria
Lucci. Two recovering alcoholic super cops that could fall off
the wagon and under the wheel at any time. They are they only two
standing between Earth as we know it and a whole new world
order."

KEN PENDERS LEAVES SONIC

Finding a comic creator who's stayed put on a company-owned title
for more than a year is becoming a rare thing in the industry,
while finding a creator who's been on a book for five years is
even rarer, and ten years or more...heck, that barely happens
anymore.

And soon, it will happen even less, as long time Sonic the
Hedgehog writer/artist has announced on his website that he'll be
leaving the Archie series in early 2006. Penders' first Sonic
work was on issue #11 of the ongoing series, in 1994. Since then,
he's been one of the major voices on the property.

The creator explained his decision in a statement on his website,
which reads in part:

I've been working in the comics industry for almost twenty years,
going back to my first assignment for DC Comics. Back in 1986 I
worked for their WHO'S WHO IN STAR TREK mini-series; and, I can
state from first-hand experience and the testimony of others that
as hard as it is to break in, it's even harder to make a career
of it -- unless you're adaptable. You can go from assignment to
assignment and then, one morning, wake up wondering why there's
no work.

That's partly why I became a writer, in response to having to
wait for other writers' scripts that I was assigned to
illustrate. I figured if I got into the game at the initial stage
of creation, I could generate my own assignments. In the case of
SONIC, it also offered me a chance to jump onto a book that was
looking for one thing (writers) instead of the other (artists).
You do what you have to, y'know?

What I didn't count on was ever staying as long as I did on the
series. I figured I'd do a few issues and move on to something
else at Marvel and DC. After all, working on SONIC back then was
an issue-by-issue proposition. Even the publishers had no clue at
all how long the book would last, hedging their bets by offering
only six-issue subscriptions instead of the twelve-issue subs
they offered on all their other titles. And when the original
SONIC animated series were cancelled, even my then-editor Scott
Fulop was pessimistic of the book itself lasting much longer. The
history of similarly licensed-titles in the comics industry did
not bode well for Sonic. It was at that point that I wrote up an
outline of stories designed to take the series to issue 50. The
culmination of which was the final epic battle between Sonic and
his arch-nemesis Dr. Robotnik. All the while I knew there were no
guarantees we would even make it to the 50th issue.

The only time I had any sense of stability was probably when I
wrote the first twenty-five or so issues of Knuckles. When artist
Manny Galan moved on to Nickelodeon, things seemed to fall apart.
The book, as you know, was cancelled rather abruptly with issue
32.

After that, it became one long roller coaster ride, never knowing
how long it would last. Finally, this past October, editor Mike
Pellerito told me he wanted to make a change. The MOBIUS: 25
YEARS LATER 2-parter I had recently turned in would be the last
story I would write for Archie Sonic in the foreseeable future.
He did, however, allow me the chance to continue working on the
book in an artistic capacity. I accepted those assignments at
first. Then, while working on an assignment, I discovered that
there were more pressing family matters as well as other
opportunities elsewhere that I couldn't afford to turn down any
longer.

So, the current Sonic-Shadow story line seeing print in issues
#157 through #159 will be my last regular Sonic story in the
series. The upcoming M:25YL 2-parter is my swan song from the
book altogether. It's now up to new scribe Ian Flynn and others
to carry the ball from here on out.

At this point, I want to thank editors Paul Castiglia, Scott
Fulop, Justin Gabrie, and Mike Pellerito, along with editor-in-
chief Victor Gorelick, and publishers Michael Silberkleit and
Richard Goldwater for the opportunity to work on the series all
these many years. And I must mention my appreciation for being
part of a series that has meant so much to so many people all
that time. My wish is that it continues to do so for many years
to come.

BRANSON ENTERS COMICS WITH VIRGIN COMICS, VIRGIN ANIMATION

According to Variety, planes, trains, communications, and space
travel just isn't enough for Vigin founder Richard Branson.

He wants in to comic books too.

The trade reports that Branson has joined with Gotham
Entertainment group, Deepak Chopra, and filmmaker Shekhar Kapur
to launch Virgin Comics and Virgin Animation. The comics arm will
be headquartered in New York, with the animation division located
in Bangalore, India.

The move is apparently the latest
evolution/development/partnership for the previously announced
Gotham Studios Asia, which was announced with the same players
(minus Branson) in late 2004, planned to have its first release
ready in 2005, but never materialized.

The content created by both groups (Virgin Comics and Animation)
will, according to Variety, focus on Asia "as an area to inspire
and create content and drive revenue, though the operation
intends to reach a global audience." Properties developed will
also be translated into full media properties across a wide line
of products and media outlets.

Chopra's son Gotham (who was an advisor on the Bulletproof Monk
comic book miniseries) is named as one of the chief architects
behind the project and, with Gotham Entertainment chief Sharad
Devarajan, will head the operations to the two Virgin companies.
Chopra will serve as chief creative officer, and Devarajan as
CEO. Virgin Comics will have three distinct lines: Director's
Cut, the Indian themed Shakti, and Maverick.

Again, parallels between the Virgin companies and the previously
announced Gotham Studios Asia are apparent, as the trade's write
up of the news lists roughly the same points as the press
release, which was issued over a year ago, namely that the two
are now looking to land 150 creators, mostly artists to fill
their talent pool. The trade reports that Devarajan will continue
to run Gotham Entertainment (which is South Asia's largest comics
publisher, and most recently collaborated with Marvel comics to
produce Spider-Man India) as a separate entity.

The first Virgin offering already has a major name attached. John
Woo is slated to create an original comic under the Director's
Cut line. Woo produced the film version of Bulletproof Monk in
2003.

"India is an incredibly vibrant market, which Virgin already,
through Virgin Atlantic, has the pleasure of working in," Branson
said in a statement. "I am delighted that Virgin Comics will not
only help to launch the Indian comic market and spin it into the
West, but will develop new and exciting talent."

ROBERT CRUMB SUES AMAZON.COM FOR COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT

The Los Angeles Times is reporting that illustrator Robert Crumb
has filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against Amazon.com
Inc. In the lawsuit filed in Seattle last week, Crumb accused the
Internet retailer of using his images without permission.

Jules Zalon, Crumb's lawyer, told the Los Angeles Times that
people who searched the website for a product that it didn't
carry were shown Crumb's famous "Keep On Truckin' " image, with
instructions to keep looking.

Crumb's representatives complained about the use of the image to
Amazon in 2003. Zalon said the company promptly removed the
image. The lawsuit was filed after the two parties were unable to
agree on how much Amazon should pay for using the image before
its removal.

The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages. Amazon has not filed a
response.

According to the Times, the reclusive artist, who usually goes by
R. Crumb, owns a house in southern France, where he is working on
an illustrated version of the Book of Genesis. His lawyer said
Crumb didn't discover the alleged unauthorized use on his own,
but was alerted by his representatives.

WRITER/ARTIST SAM KIETH SIGNS EXCLUSIVE AGREEMENT WITH DC COMICS

Sam Kieth, acclaimed writer illustrator of THE MAXX and ZERO
GIRL, has signed an exclusive agreement with DC Comics. Kieth
will write and illustrate the 5-issue miniseries BATMAN: SECRETS,
scheduled to begin in March.

"I seriously have no clue why DC offered me a contract, as I've
never had one in my life," says Kieth. "I think I talked Dan
DiDio into it before he knew what he was doing. But since I've
been working at DC for a while, I guess it just sorta made sense.
With BATMAN: SECRETS, this is the Batman I was looking to do in
SCRATCH - one who's more more serious and realistic (or as
realistic as I get). I think I did this Batman project because I
was looking forward to working with Scott Dunbier again, and I
wanted to draw the Joker, plus I needed the money! I do want to
thank Dan and Scott for helping me working out this plot with the
Batman/Joker thing."

"It's a true pleasure to be working with Sam again," says
WildStorm Executive Editor Scott Dunbier. "His stories are quirky
and thought-provoking while still being highly entertaining, and
his art... well, it's just gorgeous."

"Sam brings such incredible creativity to the DCU," says Dan
DiDio, Senior VP - Executive Editor, DCU. "His presence shows the
extent and the breadth of our diversity."
